For many years he taught at his alma mater, as well as at the Gnessin Institute, composition, bringing up a whole galaxy of outstanding composers.
In his life, Nikolai Ivanovich, meanwhile, saw a lot of troubles and sorrows – many of the composer’s closest relatives were repressed in the 1930s, including his father, who was shot in 1937. Repressions and the family of his wife, Irina Mikhailovna, née Princess Obolenskaya, did not pass. At the beginning of the war and until 1943 Peiko worked in a military hospital in Ufa, then became an assistant to Dmitry Shostakovich at the Moscow Conservatory, and soon began to teach in his own composition class.
