Soviet and Russian physicist, winner of the Nobel Prize in Physics 2000 for the development of semiconductor heterostructures and the creation of fast opto- and microelectronic components. His research played an important role in computer science. Deputy of the State Duma of the Russian Federation (CPRF), was the initiator of the establishment of the Global Energy Prize in 2002 (founders of Gazprom, RAO UES of Russia, Yukos and Surgutneftegaz (2005)). Until 2006, he headed the Global Energy Prize International Award Committee. In 1952 he graduated from the Leningrad Electrotechnical Institute named after V. I. Ulyanov (LETI). Since 1953 he has been working at the Ioffe Institute of Physics and Technology (from 1987 to May 2003 - Director, from May 2003 to July 2006 - Research Director). Since 2003 - Chairman of the Scientific and Educational Complex "St. Petersburg Physical and Technical Scientific and Educational Center" RAS. Academician of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1979), then RAS. Vice-President of RAS, Chairman of the Presidium of the St. Petersburg Scientific Center of RAS. Editor-in-chief of “Letters to the Journal of Technical Physics”.
