An outstanding Belgian poet and novelist who wrote in French, Georges Rodinbach was born on July 16, 1855 in Tournai (Flanders), in a wealthy aristocratic family. He studied at the spiritual college, then studied law at the University of Louvain (Ghent). Soon he left the profession of lawyer for literature. He was one of the founders of Young Belgium magazine. From 1886 Rodenbach lived in Paris. He began his creative path in literature with collections of poems “White Youth” (1886), “Kingdom of Silence” (1891), and others; thanks to them, he occupied a prominent position among writers-symbolists. World fame brought Rodenbach novels "Dead Bruges" (1892), "Bell ringer" ("Above life"; 1897). Among his other works are the novella “Tree” (1898), “Art in Exile” (1889), the drama “The Cover” (1894-1897), “The Hidden Mist” (1901). In Russia, the works of Georges Rodinbach were widely translated in the era of symbolism, especially in the years of reaction following the revolution of 1905.
