Born in Leningrad. He graduated in 1979 from the Leningrad Institute of Theatre of Music and Cinematography (class of A.I. Katsman and L.A. Dodin). From 1979 to 1980 he was an actor of Tomsk Youth Theatre. In the same year he became an actor of the Small Drama Theatre. Honored Artist of Russia (1991). He played over 20 roles. For the role of Baruch Naileben was awarded the highest St. Petersburg theater award "Golden Sofit" (2002) and the prize named after Vladislav Strzhelchik.
In 2002 Igor Ivanov, remaining one of the leading actors of the theater, organized his own private project - "Extremely dependent theatrical community". As a result, a play based on August Strindberg’s play The Dance of Death appeared in which the actor played the main role of Edgar.
To date, the last work of Igor Ivanov in MDT is the role of Professor Serebryakov in the play "Uncle Vanya" in the production of Lev Dodin for which the artist received the K.S. Stanislavsky Prize (2003).
