David Cronenberg is popular far beyond the United States and Canada as a director and screenwriter, the author of the so-called independent American cinema. As a film actor, he is not well known, since he appears in films of other directors quite rarely. David Cronenberg was born in Toronto in 1943. His father owned a bookstore and wrote a column for the Toronto Telegraph. His mother was a musician and accompanied him on the piano at the National Ballet. His parents considered it necessary to give the boy a classical university education, and after graduating from school, David entered the University of Toronto. While still a student, David Cronenberg tried his hand at directing – he made two short films. His first "serious" film "Abomination" was presented to the audience in 1975 and was a commercial success. A few years later, Cronenberg shot another one. Videodrome Critics called it the model of the decade.

The last years of the twentieth century, David Cronenberg dedicated films in the genre of “body-horror”. Literally translated, it means “body terror.” These are fantastic tapes about mutations of the human body. Between the concepts of normal and abnormal, the border is very shaky, says the director in his films. In 1999, David Cronenberg’s film Existence was released, which received the Silver Bear award at the Berlin Film Festival. This film is somewhat less known to the public than the famous “Matrix”, although it was released a few months earlier. These films are similar to philosophical problems. The director moved from the study of body ugliness to the study of abnormalities in society. In the same year, Cronenberg headed the Cannes Film Festival.

The latest films of David Cronenberg are marked by a kind of gloom, which, however, is characteristic of his work in principle - a hopeless terrifying peace and violence in human nature. /

Louis Malle was born in the French town of Thumeries (Department Nord). His parents were wealthy enough to give each of their seven children a decent education. Apparently, therefore, their fifth son Louis, before beginning to study the wisdom of cinematic art, received the profession of political scientist. His development as a director was greatly influenced by his participation in Cousteau’s two-year expedition. The result of this voyage was the film “In the World of Silence”, which the aspiring director shot together with Cousteau; the film was awarded the “Golden Palm” of the Cannes Film Festival and the “Oscar” award, Louis Malou at this point was only twenty-four years old. His first independent directorial work was the tape. "Elevator on the scaffold" (1958) and "Lovers" (1958). Sexual “raid”, which was clearly visible in these paintings, caused a wave of discontent and bewilderment: in the late 50s, this could be considered as a bad tone and an insult to public morality. In his next The Wandering Fire The film, which was filmed in 1963, is about suicide, which was also atypical for cinema of those years. And then the painting followed. Norman Frederick Jewison. Norman Frederick Jewison was born on July 21, 1926 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. He studied piano and music theory at the Royal Conservatory, received a bachelor’s degree at the University of Toronto, Victoria College. After a short career as a taxi driver, Norman Jewison went to London where he was an actor and screenwriter for the BBC. From the mid-1950s, he became one of the leading directors of Canadian television, and in 1958 he signed a contract with CBS and received three Emmy Awards during his three years in New York. In a big movie, the director made his debut in 1962 with the comedy Forty Pounds of Trouble, after which Universal Studio signed a long-term contract with him. After several comedy films, he directed the anti-racist detective Souly South Night in 1967, starring Sydney Poitier and Rod Steiger. This film, nominated for the Oscar and Golden Globe awards, made the name of the director known to the general public. Popular was his anti-war satirical picture "The Russians Are Coming! The Russians Are Coming!", the musical by Sholom Aleichem "Fiddler on the Roof", the adventurous picture "The Thomas Crown Scam" with Steve McQueen and Faye Dunaway in the lead roles. A huge success fell on the share of Norman Jewison rock opera “Jesus Christ – Superstar”. In the future, the director shot films in which he masterfully combined social pathos with a skillfully built tense and entertaining plot - "social fiction Rollerball", "F.I.S.T." about a trade union leader, a drama. And justice for all! In his youth, Jewison hitchhiked through the American South, and what he saw left a deep mark on his soul, so it is not surprising that the anti-racist theme found its continuation in the film “Soldier’s Story” (1984), for the main role in which the director invited the then not very famous Denzel Washington. The same actor starred - falsely accused of killing a champion boxer - in Norman Jewison's new film Hurricane (1999).

Joseph Leo Mankiewicz was born on February 11, 1909 in Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania, USA. His career began in the late 1920s in Berlin, where he was an assistant correspondent for the Chicago Tribune newspaper, and also worked as a subtitle translator for German films. His older brother, a successful screenwriter, recruited him in 1929 to work at Paramount Studios, where Joseph wrote subtitles for silent versions of sound films, wrote dialogues and scripts. In 1934, he moved to MGM Studios, where his desire to direct was met by the statement of Louis Meyer: “Before walking, you must learn to crawl”, and Mankiewicz became a producer. Among the films he produced were Fritz Lang's Fury (1936), George Cukor's The Philadelphia Story (1940). Realizing that the management of the studio did not intend to give him the opportunity for independent production, Joseph Mankiewicz in 1944 moved to the studio "XX century Fox", where in 1946 he made his debut as a director with the gothic melodrama "Dragonwick" (1946), replacing at the last minute the sick Ernst Lubitsch. In the next 26 years, he directed 20 different films: the director filmed Shakespeare, shot a western and musical, staged a social urban drama and an epic tape. On account of his successful comedies “Ghost and Mrs. Muir” (1947), “The Late George Epley” (1947), the thriller “Escape” (1948), the drama “House of Strangers” (1949). Among the leading American directors, Mankiewicz was promoted thanks to the dramas “Letter to Three Wives” (1949) and “All About Eve” (1950) – both films earned him Oscars for scripts and directing. The dramatic comedy A Case for Gossip (1951), shot in the tradition of Frank Capra’s best films, was followed by the spy thriller 5 Fingers (1952). Directed by J. Mankiewicz, Julius Caesar (1953), with Marlon Brando as Antony and Edmond O'Brien as Caskey, remains one of the best adaptations of Shakespeare's play. His subsequent films, including Barefoot Countess (1954), Suddenly Last Summer (1959), are marked by both advantages and disadvantages of Mankiewicz’s work: an interesting plot, excellent work with actors - and unjustified interruptions in dialogue, the duration of the film, the contradictory position of the director. The name Mankiewicz was associated with one of the most high-profile failures in the history of cinema - with the historical film "peplum" "Cleopatra" (1963), with Elizabeth Taylor in the title role. Although in fairness it is worth noting that he was invited to finish this one of the most expensive film projects after the dismissal of the former director. The last works of Joseph Mankiewicz were the western with elements of the black comedy Once upon a time a crook (1970) and the psychological thriller The Snooper (1972), with Lawrence Olivier and Michael Kane. In 1986, Mankiewicz was awarded the Director's Guild Award for his contribution to film art, and in 1987 at the Venice Film Festival he was awarded the honorary Golden Lion.

Fritz Lang – German and American director, screenwriter and producer – was born on December 5, 1890 in Vienna. His father was an architect, and Fritz also began to study architecture at the request of his parents, but soon became interested in painting. In his travels to Asia, North Africa, Russia and China, he earned drawing.

With the outbreak of the war, Fritz Lang was drafted into the army as a private and was wounded four times in battle. After losing his right eye, Fritz Lang was demobilized. During his long treatment in hospitals, Fritz Lang became interested in writing scripts and short stories, which were later bought by German film studios.

The debut in cinema for Lang was a film Half-Blood It was shot in 1919, but was commercially successful with the third Spider. One of the best works of the early period was Lang's film. Tired death" (1921), which promoted him to a number of leading German film directors. The main theme of all his films is the struggle of man with the inexorability of fate, so most often the director turns to the genres of drama and thriller. Fascinated by criminal psychology, Fritz Lang makes the film “Dr. Mabuse, the Player” (1922), which tells about the crimes of a maniac who wants to rule the world.

With the coming to power of the Nazis, Lang had to leave Germany and move to France and then to the United States. The commercial orientation of the Hollywood repertoire for a long time went against his own ideas, so at first Lang experienced a creative crisis. Even shooting commercial projects, the director addressed his traditional themes in the films “The Return of Frank James” (1940), “The Ranch of Bad Glory” (1952), “Hunting a Man” (1941), “The Office of Fear” (1944), “The Woman in the Window” (1944), "Severe heat" (1953)

> As the years went by, Lang found it increasingly difficult to get the upper hand in his disagreements with the producers, so in 1956 he decided not to work in Hollywood anymore. After two adventure films shot in Germany on pre-war scenarios, Fritz Lang shot the last film “A Thousand Eyes of Dr. Mabuse” (1960). The last years of his life Fritz Lang spent in seclusion in the United States in a mansion on Beverly Hills and died on August 2, 1976.

Aki Kaurismaki, Finnish director, actor, founder and leader of the legendary rock band Leningrad Cowboys in one person, was born on April 4, 1957 in Orimattil. He never studied at film school and before beginning his directorial career worked as a postman, dishwasher and even a film critic. Kaurismäki is a journalist who graduated from Tampere University. During his studies, he showed a special interest in amateur filming and dreamed of becoming an actor. Subsequently, he was able to fulfill his dream in the films of his brother - co-owner of the film company Villealfa, named after the film "Alphaville" directed by Jean-Luc Godard. Nowadays, Aki Kaurismäki is one of the revered and famous directors of Finland, having the status of a cult. Most of the films of this director are sentimental stories about outcasts or eccentric parodies made in different genres. His most remarkable paintings, The Match Factory Girl, Shadows in Paradise and Ariel, are called by critics the Proletarian Trilogy. On the account of the Finnish director a large number of famous films, including a fantasy on the theme of the novel by F. Dostoevsky “Crime and Punishment” (1983), a love story of a supermarket worker and a truck driver “Shadows in Paradise” (1986), musical comedy "Leningrad Cowboys Go to America" (1989)

One of Kaurismäki’s famous films, the French-language Le Havre, caused a storm of applause at the presentation in Cannes. This film is about a destitute but kind-hearted shoe cleaner who is haunted by bureaucracy. He is saved only by the solidarity of the working people and fidelity to his goal - he dreamed with all his heart to get to London, to his mother. Aki Kaurismäki’s films have repeatedly won the highest awards. One of his films, A Man from the Past (2002), was literally showered with film awards. In addition to six awards of the Finnish Film Academy, he received the prize "Dog Palm Branch", Grand Prix, FIPRESS Prize in San Sebastian for best film of the year and others. /

Robert Wise was born on September 10, 1914 in Winchester, Indiana, USA. He was the youngest of three brothers. He was prevented from graduating from college by the Great Depression, and so he got a job at the RKO studio as a film cutter, then worked as an editor and sound technician. As an editor, Robert Wise contributed to such films as The Devil and Daniel Webster (1941), Citizen Kane (1941) and The Magnificent Ambersons (1942). He became the director thanks to producer Val Luton, who instructed him to finish the production of the film “The Curse of the Cat Tribe” (1944) – the former director, Gunther von Fritsch, did not meet the deadlines. Robert Wise made the film Body Snatcher (1945). His film about professional boxing “Preserved” (1949) received the FIPRESCI award at the Cannes Film Festival. In his work, the director turned to various genres: he shot sci-fi films - "The Day the Earth Stood Still" (1951), "The Andromeda Stamp" (1970), "Star Trek" (1979); sports, social and psychological dramas - "Someone Up There Loves Me" (1956), "Blood on the Moon" (1948), "The Captive City" (1952), "I Want to Live!" (1958); horror films - "The Enchanted House" (1963). In 1961, Robert Wise was on the crest of fame after the unexpected success of the musical "West Side Story" staged by him (together with choreographer J. Robbins) - the picture made huge box office fees and was awarded an Oscar as the best film of the year. The second Oscar was awarded for the musical melodrama The Sound of Music (1965). It is noteworthy that this film was to shoot William Wyler, who refused at the last minute, and Wise agreed to take up the production only if the studio funded his other film - "The Sand Pebbles". Films created by the director in the 1970s-1980s enjoyed much less success, except for the famous adaptation of the novel by Michael Crichton “The Stamp of Andromeda”. In 1988, the American Film Academy recognized Robert Wise’s outstanding contribution to film with the Irving J. Thalberg Award of Honor.

British director Stephen Arthur Frears was born on June 20, 1941 in Leicester, England. He studied at Grisham's private boarding school in Norfolk, and in 1960 entered Trinity College Cambridge University for a law department. After graduation, he worked as an assistant to director Lindsay Anderson and actor Albert Finney at London’s Royal Court Theatre. Subsequently, he worked with them in films - he was an assistant director in Finney's comedy Charlie Bubbles (1967) and Anderson's If.. (1968). He also collaborated with another representative of the British neorealist school, Karel Reisch, in Morgan (1966). In 1967, with the support of Albert Finney and his company "Memorial Enterprise" shot his first film - a short drama "On Fire", dedicated to the problems of racial segregation in South Africa.

The first feature-length film Frears was a comedy detective "Sleeve" (1971), parodying American crime films of the forties with the participation of Humphrey Bogart. The main role in this picture was played by the same Albert Finney, his friend and colleague. Since the late sixties, Frears worked as a director and producer on British television, where he directed several dozen films, both documentary and feature films, and also carried out a number of adaptations of literary works by various authors, including several plays by English actor and playwright Alan Bennett: Free Day (1972), Me! I'm Afraid of Virginia Woolf (1978) and Doris and Doreen (1978). Among the many films shot by Frears for television, there were quite interesting works, such as "Devil's Kids" (1980) about the dangerous adventures of two London teenagers on the streets of the big city and the psychological drama "Walter" (1982) with the participation of Ian McKellen, and nevertheless his name for quite a long time remained almost unknown to the mass audience.
In 1984, the director finally managed to draw attention, putting a criminal thriller "Snitch", where Terence Stamp, Tim Roth and John Herth later came to the picture with a beautiful recognition (1985). The love story of two friends - a young Pakistani Omar and London punk Johnny, shown through the prism of black humor and overflowing with racial and socio-political problems of the era of Margaret Thatcher, was a real breakthrough for him and brought him fame not only at home but also abroad. His next film, based on Kureishi’s script, Sammy and Rosie Go to Sleep (1987), about the everyday life of a married couple, an Englishwoman and a Pakistani, continued the line started in the previous film, in a sharp, sometimes rather evil, satirical manner depicting the everyday life of modern Britons. His success on the big screen was continued by the biographical picture "Chuck your ears" (1987) about the life and death of playwright Joe Orton scripted by Alan Bennett, and soon he made his debut in Hollywood with the adaptation of the novel by Pierre Choderlo de Laclaw "Dangerous Liaisons" (1988), a high-budget costume drama, remembered for the magnificent game Glenn Close, Michelle Pfeiffer and John Malkovich. Shot on the novel by Jim Thompson, the crime thriller “Kidala”, produced by Martin Scorsese, was one of the most successful works of Frears in the United States and brought him, as well as Angelica Houston and Annette Bening, an Oscar nomination. Subsequent American films, such as the comedy Hero (1992) with Dustin Hoffman and the horror film Mary Riley (1996) with Julia Roberts, were significantly weaker and failed at the box office. More favorably received was the modern western drama “Country of Hills and Valleys” (1998) based on the novel by Mark Evans, who received the prize “Silver Bear” at the Berlin Film Festival. Friars continued to work in his homeland, putting two films based on the novels of the Irish writer Roddy Doyle “In a hurry” (1993) and “The Van” (1996). At the very beginning of the new millennium, he made the film Fanatic (2000) based on the novel by the popular British writer Nick Hornby, which again aroused interest in his work, and the social drama Liam (2000) about the life of a poor working family from Liverpool, seen through the eyes of a young boy. Another work of the director, a crime thriller about illegal immigrants in London "Dirty charms" (2002) with the participation of French actress Audrey Toto, caused rave reviews of critics and can be considered one of the best in the filmography of Frears. The film was nominated for the Oscars and the British Academy of Film and Television for best screenplay, and Frears himself received the British Independent Film Award for best director.

After the political drama "Deal" (2003) about the ascension to power of the leader of the Labor Party Tony Blair, Frears shot the romantic novel "Miss Henderson Presents" (2005), dedicated to the first years of the famous London cabaret "Windmill". Despite the ambiguous attitude of critics (many considered it rude and too straightforward, and the script is frankly weak), thanks to the brilliant acting duo of Judy Dench and Bob Hoskins, the film was a certain success. Frears soon revisited Britain’s recent history in The Queen (2006), which chronicles the first days after Princess Diana’s tragic death, the reaction to her death by the royal family, and the relationship between the Windsor dynasty and the prime minister. This time, the director was expected to be a real success - the picture was nominated for the Oscar in several nominations at once, and the starring actress of the reigning English Queen Elizabeth II Helen Mirren was recognized as the best actress.

Famous Hollywood filmmaker, director, actor and producer Barry Levinson was born on April 6, 1942 in the United States, Maryland, Baltimore. Barry Levinson received higher education at the American University.

Levinson began his career with comedic roles in films and writing scripts, which he does to this day. Barry, despite his comedic role, cannot be attributed to one-day actors - his films, although comedic, are serious and for the most part dramatic.

Barry made his first feature film as a director in 1982. This is the picture “Enterprise” about the company maturing young people of the late 50s, which did not bring the director great fame and money. "Good Morning Vietnam" with Robin Williams "Rain Man" Dustin Hoffman made the director famous all over the world.

Barry Levinson continued to make great films with famous Hollywood actors in the following years. Among the most popular works of the director are such as "Bugsy", "Exposure", Sleepers. . "Swamping" . This film reveals the theme of the presidential election in the United States, and the methods and methods of victory in the “equal” struggle of candidates. Judging by the film, candidates for such an honorable post resort to very sophisticated methods to get their way and make up incredible stories in order to attract the attention of voters. All these tricks are done by a team of professional technologists (the main one is Robert de Niro), who simply cannot be trusted. The only thing left to do is vote for this candidate.

Barry Levinson in his films does not amaze the audience with special effects, his directing is not original, just he gives the actors the opportunity to prove themselves and show their talent. The director makes non-banal films, often based on real events.

The future director received higher education at the historical faculty of Gorky University. In parallel with his studies in 1969-1975 he worked as an assistant director, as well as an assistant director and director at Gorky Television. After that, in VGIK Alexander finished the workshop of popular science cinema in 1979. As a diploma, Sokurov prepared a film based on the prose of Andrei Platonov “The Lonely Voice of a Man.” But he was removed from defense and almost destroyed.

The director was legalized only in 1987. Then his eleven films shot over 9 years were released on the screens. These were documentary and historical-philosophical works, the feature films included “Sorrowful Insensibility”. Also in the near future there were documentary series “Spiritual Voices” and “Leningrad Retrospective”. Again, the director returns to work on feature films, the result of which is "Eclipse Days" and Save and Save. Sokurov is becoming famous, he is increasingly being awarded various awards. In the late nineties, the director begins work on a trilogy of films that focused on the great dictators of the twentieth century: Moloch - about Hitler and Taurus about Lenin.

The more Sokurov worked, the more he became an artist, not a director. It begins to seem that he no longer needs a viewer, his film has become self-sufficient and viable without outside presence. But still there are those who really need the works of such talent of Soviet and Russian cinema.

Born in Goshen, Indiana. Prior to his film career, he worked as an aircraft pilot, and later took part in car racing. For the first time he acted as a scriptwriter and producer in the film “The Swamp” (1923), becoming by the mid-20s a well-known screenwriter. Hawks' directorial debut took place in 1925 (the film "The Way to Glory"), later he put several more silent films, but the real fame of the director was expected after the release of the gangster tape "Scarface" (1932), which became a classic of the genre. Distinctive features of Hawkes’ work were a natural “superimposed” dialogue, which gave individual scenes the greatest dynamics and tension, the ability to introduce subtle comic features into a variety of episodes of the film. Unlike many famous directors of the time, who preferred to work in one or two genres, Hawks with equal success shot westerns - "Red River" (1948), "Rio Bravo" (1959), comedies: "Twentieth century" (1934), "Raising a baby" (1938), "Monkey tricks" (1952), "Gentlemen prefer blondes" (1953), dramas: "Only angels have wings" (1939), and many others, embodying the essence of Hollywood in their paintings. 1930-50. Hawks became one of the most recognized American film directors of his time, his films starred such screen stars as John Wayne, Marilyn Monroe, Humphrey Bogart ("To Have or Not to Have" (1944), "The Big Sleep" (1946), working with him became a creative springboard for Carol Lombard, Lauren Bacall and for many others who later became famous actors. Although the films he has made in recent years have not had the same success, many filmmakers recognize his influence, and his old films continue to attract the attention of viewers.

Satyajit Ray is the largest Indian film director, screenwriter, children's writer, composer, producer, publisher, film critic, illustrator. The first Indian Oscar winner. He is the author of music for many of his films. By his own admission, he was fascinated by cinema as a college student, and most of his talent is the result of repeated views of films by famous classical directors - John Ford, Fellini, Vittorio De Sica, Orson Welles. After the release of the film “Song of the Road” (1955), he was proclaimed the creator of a neo-realistic direction in Indian cinema. It was with this film that one of the most brilliant directorial careers began not only in India, but throughout the world. He is one of three directors who won the Best Director award at the Berlin Film Festival more than once.

Italian director Lucino Visconti was born on November 2, 1906 in Milan. His father came from an aristocratic family, descendants of the rulers of Milan. He was rightly considered a theater patron. Luchino's mother, Carla, came from a wealthy family that was involved in the pharmaceutical industry.

Since childhood, Lukino and his siblings were engaged in music, sports and foreign languages. Luchino learned to play the cello, among his hobbies were reading Shakespeare and the La Scala Theatre. At the age of 22, Luchino takes part in the design of performances at the Eden Theatre.

Despite his hobbies, Lukino starts working in the cinema only in the 30s. His acquaintance with Jean Renoir leads Luchino to the set, where he becomes an assistant director. Working with Renoir is the beginning of Visconti’s directorial journey.

Luchino Visconti’s debut film “Obsession” based on the novel by James Caine was shot in 1942. The film tells the story of love, crime and revenge. Visconti found himself in the ranks of the Resistance and miraculously escaped the death penalty. After the war, he made a documentary in memory of the dead – “Days of Glory”. In the postwar years, Visconti organized the first directorial theater “Elyseo” and, together with Giorgio Streler, became the founder of the directorial theater in the country. The director’s performances were unusually realistic. This characteristic feature Visconti carries in the cinema. Film "Earth trembles" In August 1948, it was presented at the Venice Film Festival and amazed everyone with a combination of truthfulness and lyrical dignity. In the following years, Visconti combined work in theater and film. In La Scala, the director directs Spontini’s Vestalka (1954) and La Traviata (1955) with the participation of Alain Delon .

Among the famous works in the cinema are such films as “The Fog Stars of the Big Bear”, “The Death of the Gods”, “Ludwig”, “Death in Venice” and many others. Luchino Visconti died on March 17, 1976. His tombstone reads: “He adored Shakespeare, Chekhov and Verdi.”
