The historical drama about the rebirth of the Huntington City football team after the fateful plane crash turned out to be motivational, deep and intriguing. American football, of course, is not so popular in our country, but some knowledge is available. Therefore, the events in the film perfectly combine drama, sports, and an unusual duet of actors.
The exposition introduces the team to the game, which will soon fly in an airplane. By pure chance, a couple of men do not find themselves on board, which leads to further exit from the stupor and search for themselves. For Americans, this is a shocking event, so director McGee was able to convey the drama of the disaster, well showed the relatives of the victims, colleagues, friends. The film clings to the right threads, leaving a void after the disaster. Matthew Fox is back in a plane crash. Seriously guys, when you see this man at the airport, cancel the flight!
After mourning and shock, the picture goes on a rehabilitation path. Questions about the temporary closure of the club, about the respite, about the difficult period are very appropriately raised, so the fork is such that the choice must be made in the right direction. Is creating a new team a rescue or an aggravation? The picture gives tension, causes the search for a new coach to translate the turmoil into training new forces.
The characters understand the state of things, so we are met with fears and doubts, thoughts about the rightness of the plan, risks, loss of trust, but Matthew McConaughey takes the field to give birth to a new generation of the team “Marshall”. As befits in motivating sports stories, the viewer goes through several stages: understanding the grief that has occurred, accepting a new coach, selecting players and working in a team. At each point, the director knocks out the right spectrum of emotions to show both defeat and victory.
In parallel, football cases are paid attention to some relatives whose loved ones died in a plane crash. Making comparisons, parallels and lashes of emotion at the climax perfectly show the team spirit. Disunity and confusion go away, leaving behind the will to win. In general, the recovery and the final game do their job, in terms of cinema, but the subsequent historical information about the team “Marshall” is not happy and smears a happy ending. It is clear that it was necessary to show that this is part of the story, but they knock down the arrogance, nullifying the will to win and making all the motivational touches of the film, all the difficulties of climbing and the will to win unclaimed.
Combo Matthew - McConaughey and Fox looked great in a pair. Given that Fox is out of the movies, it’s nice to see him on screen, nostalgia for Lost plays a role. McConaughey became a lion and was able to show a great coach who looked at the tragedy in his own way.
As a result of the tragic death in a plane crash of a promising university team “Marshall”, the rector of the university decides not to curtail the football program, but to build a new composition. This step was pushed by the remaining members of the deceased team, who were unable to fly with them due to injuries.
"We Are Marshals" is about the creation of a new university football team in West Virginia. It is about how a small group of enthusiasts found the faith and strength to bring the football spirit back to the town of Huntington.
I would like to note the interesting presentation of the head coach, Jack Langiel, as Matthew McConaughey. This character inspires faith in everything you do not do. That's what happened to Marshall. Heartbroken and spiritless players were reborn, as were the inhabitants of this town. Jack hasn't changed his principles. He built his command system while listening to others. Realizing the downtrodden spirits of everyone and everything, Jack, through his conversation and life experience, helped to gain faith in the players, residents and perhaps all the people who followed all these events.
The production of the plot, acting, music and camera work all looked harmonious and exciting. Therefore, the pleasure of 2-hour viewing of the sports drama was more than provided. As a viewer, the picture made it clear to me that you can start living again after losing everything.

Sports dramas are a special caste (if I may say so) of cinema. As a rule, films of this genre are good and do not leave indifferent. The Rocky franchise, The Man Who Changed Everything, Overcoming, Invincible, Knockdown, Coach, Lefty, and many, many others are all about fictional or real people whose desire to become better is not only respected but also admired. It allows you to try to imitate, and somewhere to adopt their decisions, use their phrases for self-motivation.
But there are films like We’re One Team (Cursed United as an example) that deal with the incredible human pain caused by bereavement. "We're One Team" is a true story set in 1970. Then in mid-November, when approaching, a plane crashed, carrying a charter flight of a football team from the town of Huntington. More than 70 dead, including 37 team members and coaches. The tragedy was a blow comparable to the blow of a professional boxer who sent an opponent into a deep knockout.
"We're One Team" tells how the residents of the town, the students of Marshall University, for which the team played, got along with the thought of what happened. How close people grinded within themselves the thought that they would never see their sons, husbands or suitors. Director McGee, who directed this film, paid tribute to the lost team and the people of Huntington, telling the difficult story of overcoming grief and the birth of hope.
Unlike a number of sports films, "We're One Team" is not about the super-achievements that the revived "Marshalls" have achieved. Nope! The film focuses on preparing football players for the new season and, perhaps, the most important game not only in their lives, but in the lives of all citizens - the first home match after the tragedy. In this regard, it is very indicative that for the time being you do not know how residents will perceive the news that football will be played in their stadium again. If you just think about it: what it is like for them, who lost their loved ones and just friends, neighbors on the street, to once again climb the stands, because every playing number on the chest, every touch of the ball, every power trick will remind of those who will not be returned. And here it is very cool to trace the moment of unity of the audience and the team, when the fans of the Marshalls take seats in the stands, each has some element of the wardrobe of green shades - in the team color of their players. Even without the official symbols, let it be just a ribbon in the hair or a flappy green blouse from Red Dawson’s wife – but in the general range it all looks very harmonious and conveys the command of those who go on the field and those who watch their game.
In the end, when you talk about the future of the team, you realize that life is a real thing, in which the place for miracles is only in one case in a million. In the rest, she hits so that if you can’t hold the serve, you can hardly get back on your feet (about what Stallone’s character said in Rocky Balboa). But again, I repeat, the film is not aimed at telling about superachievements, it tells about the spirit of people who have experienced a great loss, found the strength to continue their work.
A team cannot be built in one season. It takes several years for the established schemes to bring results. It takes long and hard training to start winning. You need a spirit of unity, without which you will be alone in the field. The example of Marshals makes it clear that time heals. But you never know how much it will take to heal non-healing wounds.
It’s also hard to imagine what assistant coach Red Dawson (Matthew Fox), who was supposed to be on the same flight but was on business at the last minute, experienced. Fox performed his role magnificently, presenting the image of a person for whom any mention of football is a large-scale flashback to the past, where everyone is alive. He, like the surviving footballers, who for various reasons did not fly with the team to that fateful game, became perhaps the bearers of the greatest share of grief (it turned out to formulate their idea this way), because any look in their direction of those who lost relatives could be regarded as a question: Why my son / brother / father / husband? Why do you live and he doesn’t?
McGee managed to get involved in the project (although I’m sure many actors agreed to play in the film without any problems, given the history of Marshalls). Matthew Fox, Matthew McConaughey, David Straitern, Anthony Mackie, Kate Mara, Ian McShane, Robert Patrick and the beautiful Jennifer Jones, who played the husband of Red Dawson – all of them were able to fully show the suffering / experiences / pain of their characters, each of which became a hero for Huntington.
It is possible that someday Russian filmmakers will make a film about the hockey team “Lokomotiv”, who died during the take-off of the plane from Tunoshna airport on September 7, 2011. I hope that this story will be shot in the best traditions of dramatic films (although this is almost impossible in our country), without pathos and excessive tinsel - I hope it will be a heavy, but high-quality film telling about people.
As for "We are one team." This is an amazing film and if you are a fan of dramas, including sports, you will love this film.
But look at you. I do not impose my opinion on anyone.
A film about the incredible power that lies dormant in each of us. This is the true story of the bitterness of Huntington, West Virginia, Marshall University. Every year, on the same day, at the same hour, time freezes there. A mixture of emotional power, drama, incredible grief and the desire to perpetuate memory! Such a touching and tearful "set" gives us director McGee. Well, when it is also about the disaster that deprived a small city of fifty young players, to restrain emotions is already impossible. How do you survive the grief and move on with the return of a team that no longer exists? Sport is always an almost direct reflection of life. After a loss, someone breaks down forever, and someone quietly and gradually pulls himself out of the swamp. It is not easy to write about this film. He's not like everyone else. He touches something deep inside, hits hard, all lived emotion, along with these guys, coaches and the headmaster of the school. McGee seems to have been in this school himself, and makes us believe that this is our tragedy, a common one, we were there, we were with them together, the incredible feeling of kinship with the characters is even slightly frightening.
McConaughey is just great in the image of the new coach of Marshall University, all these grins, jokes among mournful faces, but not wounding, kind. The incredible image that he created on the screen, thanks to personal communication with a real prototype, coach Jack Langiel will be loved forever. Separately, I want to note the play of “future stars”, and then still little-known actors (after all, at that time the shining status was only McConaughey and the hero of LOST Matthew Fox, by the way, he is the film “red”) as Anthony Mackie, Kate Mara, and already the age Ian McShane. Everyone seems to have gone into the world of their hero, and it is difficult to return from there. That's so convincing! Bravo!
The pain of loss that permeated the whole film will leave indifferent only a stone statue, and empathy will wake up even in the coldest heart. Every shot, every moment of the film makes you want courage and patience these strong people who are trying to get up from their knees with the “Young Thunderpack”. All this atmosphere is patriotically enveloped by the melody of the soundtrack from Christophe Beck. The military horn sounds a growing background in the speeches of the coach, replaced by a quiet orchestral instrumental. It is very much felt that the film about the team did too, a real team.
The picture is complemented by beautifully read allegories, such as: the moment with the dismantling of the old barn at the time of the rector's visit, and the construction of a new one during the arrival of a new coach to visit former assistant head coach Red (M. Fox).
The film is not that even by the standards of sports drama, it is as strong as drama in general. Even if it decides to watch the viewer, not versed in American football, it will not spoil the impression of the picture. Here everything is about the eternal, and sports and football are just background, just scenery. To all the incredible advantages of the film, it can be added that unlike many of its “brothers” in the genre of sports drama, the film is not at all replete with religious bombast and pseudo-tearful theme “For All the Will of God”, as we see it, for example, in “Confrontation with Giants” (2006). This makes the narrative even more intimate for any viewer, of any age and gender, regardless of skin color and religion. Even here, McGee unwittingly brings us together as a team with a team on screen. Willful or not. Who knows... Excellent!
When it seems like the end is over and there is no more strength and no reason, something clicks inside you, something calls you up, is forced to fight and survive. Live this beautiful and sad story with the university team.
We're Marshall! And we rose from the dust! GO HERD!
If we ignore the legendary Rocky and look at other worthy sports dramas, it turns out that most of those who deserve attention are based, in one way or another, on real stories. Overcoming difficulties, internal conflicts and vicissitudes, difficult laws of big sports that remove the weak, personal growth in the team. McGee's film embraces almost all of these major historical leitmotifs and comes up with them where artistic necessity dictates.
Don’t expect “We Are Marshall” to have the grand scale of what is happening and the success that will overshadow your ideas about American football. Apparently, in full view of the studios, the story got not because of the famous names on T-shirts, but because of the dramatic subtext. The small town of Huntington from the American outback is shocked by a terrible event - a university football team dies in a plane crash, along with a coach, service staff and loyal fans. The city is devoid of its sporting and social heart. But the group of players left on the ground is not ready to give up.
Interestingly, the traditional concept of “mud to prince” does not work here, but it takes on an unusual form. For almost two hours, we are shown a leisurely revival of the phoenix of faith from the ashes - namely faith in oneself and the future, since no significant sports horizons can be expected. The film teaches you not to give up and not think only for today, as well as to think about yourself. On the other hand, the very development of history turned out to be too slow and uncertain. In some places, an almost chamber story of dialogue in diners and empty stands will impress only fans of sports dramas and a particular category of films. In addition to McConaughey, who works his bread, a number of familiar faces appear in the second roles, including from the world of the serial.

When victory shines with its bright rays, they cheerfully shout: “We are the Marshall!” When an unexpected and hurtful defeat shatters all hopes of a championship, they cry with restraint, but still equally confidently: "We are the Marshall!" When a general urban tragedy overwhelms everyone, with a lump in their throats and tears in their eyes, they continue to shout: “We are the Marshall!” Because there is nothing in the world that can take away their honor and pride, which is symbolized by the local university football team.
This is a story about the great traditions of a small town. Where you least expect miracle and heroism, there are events about which it is worth making films, writing songs. The tragic death of the football team of the city of Marshal in 1970 and the uprising from the ashes in the following years is not just an inspiration for a creative person who decided to film the events of those days. It's a role model. True heroism and true respect for the death of his comrades.
When people on the way to success are faced with seemingly insurmountable difficulties, they either step back and abandon what they started, or, grinding their teeth from the weight of the burden raised, not without falls and failures, but still move towards the designated goal.
“We are one team” is about the fact that if you give up everything during failures, you will not return losses and will not get the favor of fate. But one has only to take a small and uncertain step, as the road many miles will be covered. And remember not the very road, which will be a lot of interesting. Remember the first indecisive step and the final result. As the movie says, “Only victory matters.” So overcoming all adversity and the ability to follow your path is the victory that is the only important one.
Death is inevitable and we understand that. But it is difficult for us to realize that at one moment 75 people suddenly died: fathers, children, brothers, husbands. And how much strength you need to find in yourself to continue living, to enjoy each new day! This film is not about football at all, this film is about the strength of spirit, about the moral dignity of a person!
I decided to watch this film only because Matthew McConaughey is filming there, it was interesting what he starred in before the Dallas Buyers Club and Lincoln for a Lawyer. And so I came across "We're One Team," which looks like a regular sports drama. It would seem – I will look for a tick, but the film caught me immediately: the plot, shooting, dialogue without unnecessary “water”. In total, I was worried about this team for more than two hours: both the new and the old. I’m not a sentimental person, but there were moments when tears came up in my eyes – everything was so clean, truthful and open to me, as if I were in the stands! “The effect of presence was so well created.”
"We're One Team" is not a movie where decisive shots or goals are scored at the last minute, it's not a movie about sports to have fun, it's about Us. It teaches us to be resistant to any problems; to live when it seems that the meaning of life is lost; to love when the loved one can no longer be returned. And if you happen to stumble upon this film - then watch it, 2 hours of your life will not go to nothing.
We're a team. We're Marshals. We rose from the dust.
Grief is a trap. It makes you do what you regret all your life.
To say that this is a masterpiece of cinema, is unlikely to succeed.
I've seen a lot of beautiful American films. Most of them are about basketball and football. This is my first review and I will write it so to speak “on the shelves”.
Image: The quality of the shooting itself pleased the eye. The beauty of small cities was clearly shown, there were really beautiful moments (I even screened them). Also, the sport itself is shown in all its glory and reality. Exciting falls, aesthetic throws. However, this is the difference of this film from many similar in terms of pictures. After viewing such a picture and want to play even football, feel these falls and throws. So a mixture of beautiful angles and moments brought the picture to a decent level.
Actors: Naturally, the list of actors has popular faces. Matthew McConaughey and Matthew Fox in the lead roles. If we talk about the second, he starred in this film at the peak of his career, because then in the midst of filming the series “Lost” & # 34; where the main role played Fox. However, as someone who likes Fox's game, I can say - did a great job. McConaughey played no worse or better, but the peculiarity of his role was that he needed to play a more peculiar person. To conclude, I will not talk about everyone in this film, everyone played great, made me believe and worry for this great team “Marshall” & #34; I wanted to shout with them “Marshall, Marshall, Marshall”.
So in this movie, you can tear down and you can hear good words. Everyone will find the right note for life.
Summary:
Having brought everything to an end and leaving a review to this not so remarkable for the film industry, but very soulful and emotional film, I want to say. I want to say a lot, but this film motivates, makes you believe, do not give up, do not lose heart and strive for the best.

I came across this movie while I was walking on Wikipedia. I decided to watch because of Matthew McConaughey and Matthew Fox.
I think there is no point in talking about the plot, this film is based on real events, so it is as it is.
Acting is not at a bad level. Matthew Fox is the same as Lost, but he is fully fit and harmonious as an assistant coach. But McConaughey was very surprised, interesting game, facial expressions, movements. He is completely different from himself, he is a coach, a eccentric coach, the only one who was not afraid to take responsibility, the one who decided to help people, people he did not know.
The film captured me, it did not seem long, watched it in one breath. As it seemed to me, the director was able to convey the feelings of the heroes, their loss, the joy of victory, hope, better than the director did ' Munich Tragedy', a film that I also recently watched and unwittingly compared.
My score is 9 out of 10.
This is how my review of it would begin if... If only there was something in it.
Potentially, from this truly tragic story of the plane crash, it was possible to squeeze an ocean of pathos and show the Real Unity of the Nation (in all big letters for pathos), to show how the city is choking with grief, but grinding its teeth goes further, as young fighters take the place of fallen brothers.
As a result, the drama in the film is a clear failure: it seems that the director did not fully understand the drama he shoots or comedy. McConaughey’s ridiculous jokes (who personally reminded me of a sweet and safe schizophrenic, not a professional trainer) looked stupid, and the constant alternation of scenes of joy and sorrow did not inspire confidence. Just a team with coaches, and with it the whole city dancing after the victory, and then again crying for the dead.
In addition, the actual football in the film is not so. Close-ups, hailing sweat, screaming stands are all great, but if you claim to make a film about football, you can dwell a little more in detail on the game itself.
Pros:
- Music. It's very relevant. Ozzy Osbourne was especially pleased at a student party.
- The atmosphere of excitement before a football match in a remote American town is perfectly shown.
- The atmosphere of the '70s. Buckenbards, jeans-klash. radios and beer from cans.
- Flashback at the end of the movie. Perhaps the only time you realize it's not fiction, people are really broken and lying in their graves. It’s not in itself. (but again, it was achieved with the help of voice-over and retro recordings, not acting and the work of the director).
Total:
Coach, this is my team, my friends bequeathed it to me.
- Nate, no, no, not you, no, all of us!
The tragedy of the loss of life always leaves deep wounds in people’s minds and memories. It is impossible to forget this and such misfortunes forever change the fate of other people.
Such a terrible tragedy was the death of the Marshall University football team in a plane crash that occurred on November 14, 1970. The disaster claimed the lives of the university football team, members of the coaching staff, fans and the head of the sports department.
"They were the pride of the city ... this tragedy is impossible to understand."
The small town of Huntington in West Virginia was so shaken that many of its residents doubted whether it would be possible to assemble a new team and a new coaching staff. However, it was decided to recruit new players to the university team and revive the team. For this difficult case, the new coach Jack Langiel takes on.
Since we are talking about the character of Matthew McConaughey, it is worth noting the fact that he influenced his team. Thanks to his determination, the will to win, the fighting spirit with which he infected all the guys, he managed to create a new team from scratch and make up for a loss with which it would seem impossible to reconcile. Matthew managed to convey the image of a kind of eccentric coach, who with such enthusiasm takes on such a difficult case.
I want to say a little bit about another Matthew, with the name Fox. Of course, he is better known as Dr. Jack Sheppard in the popular TV series Lost. But as we can see for ourselves, Matthew looks great in other roles. And his role is just perfect. Throughout the screen time, you can watch the drama that unfolds in the soul of his character, coach Red Dawson, who by chance did not get on that ill-fated plane. Fear, pain, insecurity, guilt and the bitterness of loss do not give him peace. And all this gives us the feeling of Matthew with his incredible acting.
Just the incomparable music written for the film by Christophe Beck, can not help but fall into the soul. How patriotic is one of the melodies in the scene, when the head coach says parting words to his players on the memorial square, that even the viewer himself can feel the atmosphere of a team that is tuned for only one result - to win!
It turns out that the director of this picture McGee also directed such a blockbuster as “Terminator:” May the savior come. It is possible that this director became interested just after he made “We are one team”. Although McGee already had both parts of Charlie's Angels. However, his film "We are Marshall" is worth a special thank you.
If we talk about the film as a whole, then the atmosphere of that time is felt one hundred percent, and the experiences of the characters even through the screen are transmitted to the viewer, from which tears are unconsciously drawn in the most touching moments.
The film suggests that even in the most difficult and hopeless situations, you need to find the strength to fight on. We must continue to live for those who are dear to us and honor the memory of those who are no longer near us.
10 out of 10
I don't know who McGee is. I haven’t seen Charlie’s Angels (although I’ve done it about ten times), I don’t remember Terminator 4 very well, but I’ll always remember his name after watching it.
“We are a team” is not about sports. It's about how people's faith is being revived, about how one man helped a whole city recover from a terrible event.
Matthew McConaughey perfectly managed to get used to this role. Several times in the film, I thought, ‘Is that McConaughey?’ He doesn't look like himself. You really don't. Well, except in appearance. But gait, gestures... No, I know he's an actor and he should be. But often from the role to the role of the “templates”. The actor drags them from film to film. And sometimes it is by them that we remember a particular artist. I barely saw them here. This is a huge plus for McConaughey.
And to be honest, after watching it is quite difficult to disassemble the work of everyone who worked on the film separately. They became one team to show us the story of the rebirth of the Faith. And we see it in detail.
“When I heard what happened, that tragedy — the only thing I could think about was them.” What do these babies mean to me? And I realized how difficult it would be if I lost them. And then I thought, "The team, the school, the city ... it must be even more painful." I thought, “Damn, can I help you?” Help you. Yeah. I think I still want that. Like them. And he helped.
The memory of the departed is not in sorrow, not in monuments and not in weeping. Memory in the heart.
