I'll repeat my old thought. When you’re just doing a sequel (good or bad, whatever), that’s one thing. When you do a sequel that twists the first movie (and I remind you, the first Descent was beautiful), it’s a tragedy.
“Descent 2” belongs to the second category of sequels. One hundred percent porkiness in relation to the author’s horror Neil Marshall. By the way, Marshall refused to work on the sequel (smart), went to shoot a wonderful “Judgment Day”. In the director’s chair sat down – John Harris.
Who's Harris? This is an editor (Big jackpot, 127 hours, etc.). The man ruined everything that was possible (from the positive characters to the atmosphere). In addition to the director, the writers deserved the belt. Amazing, there are three of them here! Three people wrote crazy game.
They got Sarah and June back! That is, they crossed out all the drama of the original and sent psychology to hell. Terrible. The plot is beyond obscurantism. Some old sheriff decided to put Sarah in an already familiar cave, ooh. Allegedly, under the pretext of finding the other missing.
Yeah, yeah, Ripley agreed to fly to Alien for the second time. The truth behind Ripley was a whole crowd of armed thugs (led by Bean and Vasquez, a-hee-hee). Sarah has a handful of clowns behind her. Oh, writers. You are taking a sick (tortured) girl to the troglodytes. Why?
Look at the sad eyes of Shauna McDonald – the actress understands everything perfectly. Business. She shouldn't have signed. All right, let's go. Descent 2 is a lifeless sequel to the chic British drama horror. Fans of the first part - beware. There are even some troglodytes here that are slim.
Do not make sequels if the only reason for their appearance is hype.
Descent 2 is a good example of why making a sequep of a popular film only with an eye on the hype is not the best idea.
It’s no secret that the sequels of popular films are made on the principle of ' understand what fans and critics liked the most, and now give it twice as much ' At the same time, it doesn’t work if it is ' twice as much ' it doesn’t hide any new ideas or the development of old ones.
Victims became more diverse, they became more. Accordingly, the dynamics with monsters and violence has increased significantly. But is it really interesting to keep an eye on it, if, except for that, it’s essentially the same first movie, only with a completely discarded (for obvious reasons) suspense?
If the authors thought that the main virtue of the first film was the violence and brutal murder of heroes and monsters, then they clearly drew the wrong conclusions from their work. The final cliffhanger saves the situation a little, but he can hardly play a big role due to the vague future of the franchise.
I thought Harris couldn’t do worse than the first part, but I was so wrong. The second part was even more ridiculous and ridiculous.
Where to start my outrage...
First. The movie is full of stupid things the characters do. Apparently, the director did not think that the audience would notice this, but it is so striking that it is impossible not to laugh. For example, a group of rescuers went down to the cave without even warning anyone about it, the creatures are guided by hearing, so you need to shout louder ... and these are not the only situations that, frankly, just spoil the whole viewing.
Amnesia ... as soon as I heard this word, I immediately remembered second-rate Brazilian TV series. Really? Amnesia??
B - third. The moment that confuses me most is the inhuman abilities of the main characters. It is amazing how girls without any training and practically bare hands were able to kill a huge number of creatures. Men who are not only larger than them (mass, height), but also stronger, could not kill even one. Wonders, and only.
I'm not talking about the schedule.
The only thing that can be praised for both parts of the film is that the paintings correspond to their genre and are really scary (albeit only elements of surprise). And so, the film for once and that, only for those who are not spoiled by modern horror films. It has its own atmosphere, but for a good horror film it is not enough.
I liked it?No
This is the case. It is clear that no one in principle and did not want to continue, except ... the viewer, who was frightened by the first part. And commerce has already begun. Indeed, the second Descent is something incomprehensible, something very commercialized, faked, made in a hurry.
The main character really got out of the terrible and blood-drenched friends depth and ended up in the hospital. Naturally, she was interested in local Pinkertons. Why did you get out alone in blood? But she doesn't remember anything. After all this stress! And the Pinkertons found nothing clever but to bring the heroine back into the depths. The same goes for finding out where to conduct investigative experiments! And, as the tagline says, it should be "deeper, even scarier."
Alas, it was neither deeper nor scarier. The viewer already knows what they have to face in these depths. And that makes a few minutes of descent boring. And then everything is predictable and stamped. It would be interesting if the creators told us where such a nightmarish, primitive evil climbs in these caves. But instead, blood, saliva, vomit are poured on the viewer to lead to a “fantastic” and even less intelligible ending. And here's this scene with saliva flowing down on the stranded heroine... Is that some kind of black humor from the writer? Stuck between the stones, she smiles, confident that her boyfriend has come to help. Calls him by his name... and he-- he's coming to her at this time, sorry? It's a funny joke.
In general, the second descent I watched with difficulty. Finding out the relationship between Sarah and where Juna came from turned into ordinary women's showdowns, the other actors do not play, but just play along.
Summarize: you should never remove sequels, if it requires only big money, not a soul.
For John Harris, it was the first and last film of his career. Apparently, the editing of the first "Descent" impressed him so much that he decided to personally shoot the sequel. The sequel was released after 4 years and did not have such a grand success as the original. Is there anything to be praised for?
It feels like the director struggled to pave any possible path for the sequel and eventually paved it, sending a search and rescue team and a couple of police officers along it, as well as Sarah, a survivor at the end of the first part. Anything, as long as the heroes again descended into the gloomy caves and went for lunch to hungry monsters resembling mythical goblins. Monsters appear more often than in the previous part, and there are more frightening moments. True, and the style of intimidation has become more primitive - no tense waiting, all screamers. On the other hand, now monsters can be seen better and we can learn a little more about them.
No less alarming is the situation in which new characters fall. Old mine, dark tunnels, caves... But some surprises seem unnaturally strained, as if not the circumstances, but the director orders the characters to run to the sides, to be silent or scream. In addition to the frightening scenes in the sequel, there are episodes that rely on disgust or even caustic ridicule, which is why this film does not reach the level of the first part. And yet, one brilliant plot twist heats up the atmosphere, stirring up fantasy and giving viewers the opportunity to think up what they saw for themselves.
This time, the actors have mixed impressions. If "Sean McDonald" and "Natalie Mendoza" continue to please, then all the others cope at best only on "good", unconvincingly revealing their characters. The saddest thing is Gavan O’Herlihy, whose motivation rarely slips common sense. The fate of his character is not surprising, except for the way she was treated by Sarah and other witnesses.
Descent 2, as you would expect, did not surpass the first part, but this is not the case when the sequel rolls into the Tartars, being completely unnecessary. John Harris tried to make a sequel to the beloved story, and at least tried to do it as best as possible. Few people will give him a hand, but he deserves his approval.
9 out of 10
I watched the first part of the descent a long time ago, and therefore I even forgot why I put 3/10. Therefore, for the second part I sat down with an adequate attitude and impartiality.
The first thing that struck me was a completely fake inventory. Oh, what's going on? Give me a sandwich, I think you're wasting good ketchup. Stones are papier-mache, blood is ketchup, dead is a doll. To be honest, it was just impossible to get into the film because of all this.
The second disappointment is graphics. It was 2009, the cinema saw the Terminator, Star Warriors, and Transformers, in the end (and they, for a moment, are entirely of Counton). However, there has been no progress in this area. Alas.
The third item is lighting. The action takes place in caves that are deep underground. The heroes of the film should light their way with flashlights, but we won’t mock them, will we? Of course not! Let us light their way without lanterns, and to make it so bright, every pebble was visible (or, God forbid, stumble).
And finally, monsters. The question is, should horror be scary? What scares a man? Yes, it is clear that the unknown, the unknown, the darkness. But, since the caves are equipped with powerful spotlights, all these monsters can be very well seen. And not just to see, but even to see the hack of make-up artists and think, where else we have seen such monsters (the Tenth Kingdom). Well, no with such monsters "tense" when watching, no worries, excitement. And when the heroes are wooden, then who to worry about?
In addition to all this, the film is “dirty”, too many unnecessary moments, for example, a pit with feces, blood from all the crevices (so fake), biting the neck of monsters. Where is it going? Is that a horror?
It just so happened that the sequel to the Descent I before the viewing treated the same as the original before the viewing. Both films did not inspire my confidence, but later they were pleasantly surprised. In Descent 2, I believed even less - I thought it was like a continuation of Turn the wrong way, Pulse and Boogieman. And the film, after its beginning, kept this “intrigue” for a long time. The sequel has a bad start compared to the original. Here, instead of motivating the main characters, there is some inexplicable stupidity. Everything in order.
The sequel begins literally with the end of the first film - Sarah manages to get to the surface. Meanwhile, local authorities are trying to find the missing girls in another cave (after all, if you remember, our friends ended up going the wrong way). Sarah has temporary amnesia, but the local sheriff picks her up from the hospital so she can show them where they went. This is where the disappointment begins: Sarah does not seem to remember what happened to her in this cave, but nevertheless she from the moment of descent from every corner as if waiting for danger. They ask her what happened to them, but she doesn’t remember. It feels like remembering. It was as if she wanted to come down here again, to leave the rest to fend for themselves, so to speak, to bring our beloved starving cannibals to the table. Moreover, not only does Sarah not answer questions, she looks like a person who is not quite in her mind – she is silent, as if she had forgotten how to talk, too. These scenes last long enough to get bored. And I, as always, scenes with such stupid behavior of characters annoy.
Fortunately, the film soon changes. And so much so that in action scenes it even surpasses the original. The clashes of heroes with cave dwellers this time more inventive and cruel. The moment when the heroines are forced to dive into an underwater cave, has an incredible intensity and tension. I am an adult, but I am afraid of water, especially gloomy water in the dark. I don't know if I could dive like that - I would panic. So this moment really impressed me. Also very strong is the moment of the first appearance of the heroine Juneau. Personally, I had a very warm feeling when I saw her and some special joy. Such strong episodes in Descent 2 still abound - as the sheriff hung over the abyss or the final fight with mutants - all vivid and emotional. You don’t even remember the stupid scenes at the beginning of the movie.
So let me summarize by comparing the two descents. The first had a good balance - it was a measured film with a good strong start, good motivation of the heroines and interesting further events. He was almost completely devoid of stupidity. I ended up giving him an 8. The sequel sins exactly stupidity in the first third of the film, but then compensates for this shortcoming with more vivid and emotional episodes than in the original. Such an action atones for the guilt of its beginning and in the end earns itself also 8 points. I'd be 9 if it wasn't for the stupid moments.
Since I liked the first horror film “Descent” directed by Neil Marshall, I learned about the existence of the sequel, and with anticipation began to watch it. Marshal was no longer a director, and John Harris sat in the director's chair. To return in four years the sequel to the film "Descent" was very ambitious and bold. This sequel intrigued me, and one night I began to watch it.
The expedition of friends in unknown caves turned out to be a tragedy, and only one survived. The girl goes to the local police, but law enforcement agencies decide to check her history and go to the caves where her friends disappeared. They take the survivor girl with them, and the heroine will again have to face the horror that she experienced and face her secrets of this cave, about which no one knows.
The sequel was also shot in a cold atmosphere and in the same style as the first film, but the sequel was not as exciting and interesting horror film as the first. In the sequel, there are surprises for the viewer and interesting moments, but for me it is already lower than the first original film. The picture is again full of stories of terrible creatures and terrible deaths. In some places everything looked scary again, but again I have a double opinion about this film.
It seems to me that in real life, the survivor girl would never return to these caves for anything in the world, and she could not be dragged there. Everything was already theatrical. The script was a bit sucked out of the finger. The plot was simple, although at the end of the audience again waiting for surprises.
Shawn McDonald and my favorite from this story Natalie Jackson Mendoza was pleased to see in the sequel. The duet of their heroines and enmity I remember well. The actresses played convincingly. The rest of the cast is second-rate, and there is no one else to talk about.
About the movie itself as a whole, we can say this: if you liked the first film “Descent” you can willingly appreciate the sequel, but do not expect anything supernatural from it. It is neutral and can be viewed once, but no more.
Descent 2 is a 2009 British horror adventure film and a return to the terrifying and terrifying story of caves and the creatures living in them. The movie turned out to be medium and bitter, I am neutral towards it.
I remember the excitement that caused me the first "Descent" on the first viewing. “Does the horror genre still have a chance for a decent future?” Are there still directors who are able to shoot real horror films, where you get scared together with the heroes, where you worry about the heroes, where, it seems, you even feel the cave cold and the dampness of the stones yourself?
Yes, the first “Descent” is a masterpiece film. For me, it's on a par with Aliens and Blair Witch. This is indisputable.
The second “Descent” on the first view did not cause such enthusiasm. The film began with a terrible and banal stupidity: a person who has experienced horror returns to the place of the experience (and with some completely ridiculous goals).
The first film was dominated by darkness. Darkness and cramping. Claustrophobia and hopelessness. Here, most of the scenes take place in spacious halls, besides for some reason bright. There is also a lot of déjà vu from the first film. Very much.
The characters are stereotyped idiots from American horror stories. Just live food for monsters, no personalities, no emotions. Only panic, ridiculous acts (which in the last place you expect from rescuers or a policeman), the consequences of which can be more dangerous than monsters, and colorful bloody deaths.
Monsters are very different from those in the first film. No, when viewing the difference is not too striking — but if you deliberately compare them, you see that the authors of the sequel tried to give them a more frightening and more disgusting look, which failed poorly. In the first film, monsters were more believable and from this merzee - degraded people - "throats". And here they are just monsters, just toothy slimy-lumpy freaks. In addition, they began to resemble powerful orcs. In addition, like the Orcs in Moria, they too run in hordes and plaster walls.
In fact, the horror in this horror film is already less than in its predecessor. Scenes with tension and exhausting foreboding are much less. But there are a lot more scenes with “boo!!-effect”. This is a very old, very primitive, but effective technique. You can’t give it up, but you can’t stick it every ten minutes, like in Descent 2. At first it scares, then it gets annoying. Sadism and blood, eerie and rather naturalistic killing people (and monsters) in the “Descent-2” more. I don't know if it's a virtue or a disadvantage.
No, I won’t say that the film is very bad – I have seen incomparably worse horror. He's a little above average, I'd say. This movie should not have been made. “Descent-1” was a new and unusual phenomenon, but it was clear that the sequels in his case are simply nothing to shoot. This is a plot that needs no continuation, self-sufficient and unique. And the continuation, which we were shown, turned out to be only a fake and imitation, epigonia, not a terrible original horror, but just a pretty standard horror.
And although the finale with the incomprehensible old man hints at a possible continuation, I hope that this continuation will not happen.

The first part made a very strong impression on me, and now it is one of my favorite films. It just so happened that I started watching Part 2 immediately, a few minutes after the second. Unfortunately, it was much worse and weaker than the first.
The very first thing you pay attention to, especially if you watched the first part, and immediately after it the second is in some places just terrible inconsistencies of the sequel with the original. And I'm just going to give you some of them. The corpse of a girl, how did he end up not in a tunnel near a big cliff with water below, but on the other end of the cave? How did the camera end up near the place of first contact when it was supposed to be in a completely different room??? And that, only the most innocuous.
Another strong drawback is illogicality in some cases, and here I will also give only 1 such point. Really! A woman who had just experienced something terrible and lost her memory should have been taken to a cave with her! Avossha will remember, so help - well, it's just without comment. There are many of them, unfortunately, indecently a lot, and they greatly spoil the impression of the picture, and almost all of them in the first half of the film.
Very upset that the film came out much less atmospheric than the first part, even the cave looks not dark and creepy, as in the first, but quite different. Significantly weaker here and acting – it is not the same as in the first part, the same Mendoza in the first part played its heroine much better. The most unfortunate character here is the sheriff. If it had been cut and it didn’t exist, I would have put the film on a point for it, so negatively it spoils the impression of the film with its own in a number of places, frankly, stupid actions. But in general, the level of acting is very, very good, the rescuers played very decently, the main character looks good, as well as the assistant sheriff, but Mendoza and the sheriff pumped up, especially the latter. In general, in the first part, the level of acting is higher and better.
But in general, the actors’ play, the atmosphere, the meaning of what is happening, fear and so on are far from hopeless, and very even, but the whole point is that all this, in sum, is much weaker than what was in the first part.
The first half of the film is perhaps the most dreary, it is in it that almost all the inconsistencies and illogical moments, although even here there are a number of worthy moments. But in the second, the film becomes close to what it was supposed to be completely, and in general there are a number of intervals when the film is really made in a proper way, but these are much less than we would like.
And of course the end... The penultimate plot twist, as well as the end itself, in general, is not weaker than the same period of the first part, but it was necessary to spoil the entire last impression with such a crappy ending.
It's a pity, it's a pity that everything was done the way it was done, and the potential was wow-go. But there's nothing you can do.
4 years after the stunning viewer of the first part, another director took up the continuation of the story, loved by lovers of horror films. The nightmare from the dungeon returned to the screens of cinemas, which can not but please, because often many sequels of such films are released immediately on video, which negatively affects the quality of the picture - here it is the opposite: the director tried to improve the first part in technical terms, namely, to excellent shooting in the dark and professional scenery of the cave system to add another spectral action, because this time the main character will go down to underground hell not one, but with a group of special forces, which may well differ from the first one.
And in the dungeon, nothing has changed, mutants are also waiting for their victims in the cave, they have not yet mutated in some way (usually in the sequels of horror films about predatory creatures, creatures are credited with some new abilities, as in the sequels “Trembling Earth” worms began to breed flying individuals). The scale of the incident is the same, all the action takes place in the cave system, where the girl who got out of there in the first film, this time will lead a group of special forces, but she does not remember what happened to her, so even specially trained fighters do not expect the attack of bloodthirsty creatures. But they will be able to fight back the monsters, so this time the viewer is waiting for an abundance of action with a sea of white blood pouring from the affected mutants. The spectacle is even more unforgettable, special effects are more juicy, the plot is more exciting. A minor drawback - this time without showing beautiful landscapes stretching over the hell of cannibals, this time everything is much more brutal and spectacular. The only significant disadvantage is that again it was not said who these creatures were and where they came from. After a chic spectacle, which lacks only an explanation of what is happening, I want a third part, but it is not planned yet. Horror lovers will not remain dissatisfied. Maybe the second part is not able to scare as much as the first, because after the first part, the viewer seems already familiar with the terrible situation of this story, but the eye will rejoice - that's for sure.

P.S. Be sure to watch until the end, the ending is amazing. I've seen a lot in horror movies, but I certainly didn't expect this.
A long time ago, I decided to watch the movie “Descent” and I was very skeptical about it. All these catacombs, adventures, descents on the water, and in general a variety of extreme sports are not mine. It doesn't bother me, it doesn't bother me, and I couldn't imagine how they could scare me. But they were frightened, not by monsters that suddenly appeared in the way of the girls, but by the atmosphere itself, by those very catacombs. I felt with every cell in my body what they were going through. The shooting is so great that you fully experience all the hardships and hardships of the characters. And the moment Sarah got stuck in the narrow passage almost drove me crazy, how worried I was about her.
So, the second part is a sequel, which tells that miraculously saved Sarah returns to this cave with rescuers in the hope of remembering and possibly finding one of the survivors. Yes, it is unlikely, but if there is even a small chance, it should be used. And miserable, exhausted, frightened Sarah descends with everyone, back to these catacombs using the elevator of an abandoned mine.
What happened below was a strange surprise. Weak, helpless, beaten Sarah turns into Rambo with a stone face. The creators turned it into a crocodile Dundee, which is able to survive in the wildest conditions. And you know what I'm going to say, that's what pissed me off the most. It's her silent, stone face, her arrogance. A week ago she crawled with great difficulty through all these rocks and gorges, barely climbed out, barely escaped and then she turned into an indomitable winner, whom nothing and no one will stop. I think this is a bit of a step in the wrong direction from the writers. Yes, the audience loves when there is one hero in the film who is able to overcome all adversity and despite everything goes forward, fights with all the villains and clings to life with all his might. But that's not the case. We have already seen her weak, we already know that she is fragile and only a miracle could change that. But this miracle is impossible in two days in the hospital, and no one gave her the courage serum. Big and fat minus. It would be better if she again in tears ran away from monsters and thereby sweetened the viewer.
But this is not the only surprise that awaits the viewer. All of a sudden, someone appears in the frame that no one expects to see. And someone is behaving in exactly the same way. And the writers do not care that a person simply does not survive without food, water, in such unsanitary and most importantly dangerous conditions. We are again shown the wonders of the human body and the power of the spirit. And again, it's just ridiculous.
But that's not all! The viewer should be clinging, if it is not possible to scare, then it is necessary to cause other strong feelings, in this case, the bet was made on a feeling of abomination. There was a lot of attention paid to monsters, much more than in the first part. In the first part we saw them briefly, and now in all its glory. They can be seen so well that you can see every wrinkle and fold. So, constant flowing drool in the form of mucus and not just current, they constantly fall on someone's hands or face. The corpses of the unfortunate dead in all the glory of their decomposition. Killing monsters, followed by a fountain of blood that will necessarily go into the mouth of the one who kills. Well, the sewage ditch, where these very creatures defecate, is completely too much.
It’s probably worth watching the first part and forgetting about the second. She wouldn't be bad if there wasn't so much abomination and stupidity. But unfortunately we have what we have and it makes no sense to look at it.
The second part of the film “Descent” clearly proves the old rule: “The sequel, as a rule, is much worse than the original, all the stupidest of the initial picture is elevated to absolute.”
I liked the first film, although it was a simple horror movie. The original creation of Neil Marshall perfectly conveyed the atmosphere of the cave, the feeling of isolation, the heaviness of the stone vault. I’m a little familiar with speleology was interested in watching this movie. Also, the original had a good script, the characters behaved quite realistically given the situation, there was an emotional and ideological subtext. The director’s and cameraman’s work was also of good quality.
But back to the sequel. In Descent N2, nothing remains of all the positive features of the original. The plot is stupid and very unrealistic, its connection with the original, besides, it completely contradicts the ideas inherent in the first film. Dialogues and events simply do not make sense, the characters behave stupidly, the characters are a set of cliches. The level of effects and other technical implementation is extremely low. The end stamp is 100%.
“Descent 2” is just a crackpot with a lot of blood and screeching, to praise this work is simply nothing.

The first part of the atmospheric thriller “Descent” was released in the UK in 2005 and caused a wide response in the audience. It would seem that the usual horror story about a group of speleologists who decided to celebrate the next weekend with a trip to the caves. However, among the friends themselves, there is no complete understanding of the true goals of this trip. First, old grievances come to the surface, and then the girls have to save their lives, because at the depths they met not only stalactites, but also terrible mutants, devouring all life on their way.
The first film was really scary and frightening to the tremors. In front of the viewer, a fun trip for adrenaline turns into a survival game where there is no place for friendship, attachments or sentiment. Everyone is for himself and here's what's bad: when danger breathes into your face, the old omissions and suspicions can cause that at the right moment no one will lend you a helping hand.
Four years later, the editor of the first film, John Harris, decided that he could continue the story of Descent on his own. To further intrigue the audience, Harris took up the story from the very moment where the suffering of Sarah, the only survivor of the bloody meat grinder, ended.
... The victim was rushed to a nearby hospital, but neither Sheriff Vaines nor his assistant Rios can talk the girl and find out the fate of her missing friends. Sarah herself, either unconsciously or quite consciously, is silent like a fish, for she clearly does not want to remember that she survived thanks to her betrayal. The experienced sheriff offers to arrange an investigative experiment and go in search of the rest of the expedition. Naturally, along with Sarah, whose behavior he finds highly suspicious. This trio joins the company of rescuers as part of an experienced speleologist Dan and his assistants Greg and Cat.
Since the true route of Sarah and her partners is unknown to rescuers, it was decided to enter the caves through an abandoned tunnel, in the area of which a local resident found the girl. As our heroes descend to the bottom, they soon discover the remains of one of the victims and begin to realize that Sarah really has something to hide. The girl, finding herself in a familiar environment, recalls the circumstances of a recent nightmare and, obeying the instinct of self-preservation, tries to get out of the caves for the second time. Awakened by the arrival of a noisy crowd of fresh meat, the underground monsters begin their hunt, while the rest of the team are forced to separate and seek salvation by all available means.
For the director-debutant Harris very well coped with his task. Another thing is that the rest of the fighters were pumped up, in particular, by scriptwriters and some performers, but this is not his problem. But the problems of the project as a whole. As a result, the second “Descent” performed in the movie rental is not as stellar as its predecessor and, apparently, put an end to any development of this topic.
If we recall the relatively recent “Sanctum”, which in many respects (with the exception of the horror component) repeated the idea of both “Descents”, then English horror films seem to me more preferable than the Hollywood emasculated and pathetic thriller. And let’s be honest, it is the fantastic part of the “Descents” that causes the most interest, because without it all these throwing through dark caves would look much less spectacular. However, this time the authors overdid the dose, violating the optimal ratio of psychological drama and horror in favor of the latter.
If in the first “Descent” blinded and toothy “miners” appeared in the frame infrequently, but they caused panic among the climbers only by their appearance, then in the second film the creators decided to turn around to the fullest and flood the cave with dozens of monsters. This, of course, enlarged the budget of the picture, and at the same time sharply reduced the level of suspense. “After trying once, I eat now.” In other words, having set the pace, the authors had to follow it, and therefore by the end of the film, filthy horrors climb from all the cracks, completely killing all the intrigue.
Worst of all, the writers failed to write the true characters.
The question is, what the hell out of a perfectly sane sheriff by the middle of the film made a crazy hatter, walking around with a revolver and pretending to be John Wayne? And his assistant Rios, who half of the film beats in panic at every rustle, and then turns into a cool warrior, as if remembering that he serves in the police, and not in the kitchen peeling potatoes? I'm not talking about another survivor from the first Descent (yes, I know, spoiler, but it happened), who poops her eyes and plays the Amazon. All these characters are untrustworthy.
Thus, the second “Descent” came out very similar to the original. Changed only partially the characters and motives, added intimidating liveliness, and with the finale, the authors disturbed. To put it bluntly, the comrades jumped at the end. They clearly wanted to catch up with the creeps and wove another conspiracy theory to the plot, but it turned out somehow ineptly and, most importantly, completely contradictory. But spectacularly and unexpectedly, it does not take away.
Verdict: quite watchable horror about speleologists and those who are used to them breakfast and dinner. In moderation it is scary, in some places it is stupid, but everything is shot cheerfully, without long pauses. In some places, the motivation of the characters limps, but in general, the casting, unfamiliar to a wide range of viewers, copes well. The film lost its potential as a thriller and became more like a standard horror movie. For most of the time, the heroes do not figure out the relationship, but run through caves from toothy mutants. Not the worst continuation of the story, given Harris’ inexperience in the director’s saddle.

Welcome! Descent 2 was watched immediately after the first part in one evening, I had never watched films before, so I decided to comment on my impressions.
First of all, I hasten to disagree with many about the absence of the atmosphere of the first part - caves, darkness, monsters, a sense of doom is present; in this regard, the films look after each other as a whole, and the main character made a full impression as a girl who just crawled out of these caves, but secondly.
Secondly, the plot of course does not differ in originality - to gather several motley people in one company, preferably of different age, nationality, social status, etc. and throw them into an extreme situation is a very often used idea. As a rule, everyone likes how in the course of such films, the characters, mainly because of their own stupidity, gradually go to their forefathers and the main character, who thinks badly about what needs to be done, remains alive.
In this regard, the most amusing character in the film, in my opinion, is the sheriff - being moderately well-fed, at age, without special ammunition, he climbed into the dungeons himself, taking his, also not young, assistant there, manages to get lost, lose a revolver, break a lantern and a significant part of the film wanders in dark caves in proud loneliness somehow safely bypassing dangerous monsters - beauty! The film was watched on the machine under the impression of the horror of dark caves and monsters.
Since I expected the worst from the film, because the sequel is always worse than the original, still the impression is rather positive. Thank you!
As a lover of all these films about a group of people who went somewhere and were attacked by someone, I was happy to watch both parts of Descent. The first part was definitely very happy. Everything I wanted, I got. But you can't say that about the descent sequel. And here's why.
The main thing that appears in the film is stupidity. I'll give you some examples of it in the film.
As you already know from the synopsis Descent 2: survived the only girl – Sarah Carter, who after the events of the first film lost her memory. Having not yet recovered, without understanding anything, she is immediately dragged to the place from which, in fact, she climbed out with such difficulty. No, isn't that stupid? How? Why would I? That is, they take a girl who survived inexplicably how, climbed out of the cave, which does not remember anything, and drag her to where it is not clear what. I’m sorry, but this is not the case in modern society. What about the work of psychologists? What about logic? It is not clear that this is all serious and quite possible, that here we are talking about something terrible.
The second point of stupidity is the absence of any cold weapons. No knife, no bayonet at all. All right, guns and guns were sorted out in the beginning. I agree, the shot could cause a chain reaction and everything will collapse. But a knife! Where is it without him?! But probably cut ropes and other things they gathered by hand.
I also want to note the actions of the girls and the weakness of the men. If a girl is attacked by monsters, she will knock all the crap out of this creature and crush his head properly. If a guy is attacked by this monster, then he either falls, or screams, or worse.
What am I saying? Of course, the descent should have a continuation and not one. It is interesting to know who these monsters are and how they came to be. The ending certainly decides, and for it a separate plus. But overall, it's weak. It will be a supplement to the first part.
Descent 1.2 is an ordinary “horror” of the old sample of the 90s, made in a modern style. In short, these are horrors that do not know how to scare, since no new scarecrows will be shown to the viewer. The director decided to limit himself only to the wild squeals of jumping monsters from corners. So you will not find very scary moments in the “descent”
But suddenly I came across a new, finally meaningful story. In the new part, the director offers the viewer to follow not the entire company that descended into the catacombs, as in the previous part, but individual personalities. The group is simply divided into small groups and the viewer is forced to observe, in fact, each hero separately. Personally, I was very interested in watching every hero who tries to survive like a helpless creature. But that's only part of the plot... What awaits the next poor will be found out only by the viewer. And believe me, it's worth it!
The only thing that really pisses me off, as I said, is the very scary scenes that are just out of date. Not only is the viewer shown absolutely the same frightening scenes as in the first part, so the director has not yet diluted them with anything new. One thing the director succeeded in is the gloomy and tense atmosphere of this horror, for which you need to watch this movie. I recommend watching the movie.
The sequel to the film "Descent" was highly anticipated. Given that the first film was very exciting, scary and with an uncertain ending, then the sequel itself at least once, but should have appeared. So it happened, in 2009, the year the film "Descent 2" was released.
The second part was no less bloody and exciting than the original. As the plot develops, the dynamics are gaining momentum with every minute, and the film becomes more interesting and interesting. It should be noted that the picture is well thought out and visually worked out, since the caves and places, easily recognizable from the first film, remained the same, then its new expanses became confusing, dark and truly sinister.
Although the actors here are not of the first magnitude, but they coped with dignity, and the heroines from the first film of which play Shawn McDonald and Natalie Jackson Mendoza gave the film a certain drama, which combined well with the overall picture.
The cave dwellers are much tougher than those in the first film. They got meaner, nimbler and smarter. The artists worked well on their makeup and they began to look a little scarier.
And some praise was given to the creators themselves. And the thing is that they made a direct logical sequel out of the film, not a separate sequel, which only looks like the first film and somewhat resembles it. I really liked the caves themselves and how a group of rescuers got there through the old mines, which already makes it clear that there are not two or three exits from these sinister underground labyrinths. I was also pleased with the approach to the details in the form of a found video camera, recording on it and some places already familiar from the first film.
In general, Descent 2 is a very good sequel, which complements the first film rather than surpassing it or vice versa. Of course, after this film there are still a number of questions, the answers to which all fans and movie fans will receive in the third part, but whether it will come out and whether it will be the same as these two films – time will tell.

Addition in the face of the rescue operation on the way...
Once upon a time, when Zidane hadn’t hit Materazzi yet, when Steve Jobs was still alive and Putin was president (some things don’t change), and to be more precise, Neil Marshall’s phenomenal film Descent came out in 2005. Then he gave the impression of an unexpectedly exploded bomb and was an excellent horror in the caves with a group of girls and a group of monsters, the secondary sexual characteristics of which were not noticeable, so I can not vouch for the floor.
And in 2009, and in 2010 in Russia comes the sequel, which fans of the first part were waiting impatiently. The story, suddenly, continues. Usually, as is done, a new group of victims is bluntly launched without any connection to the original. Immediately Sarah was able to survive, but forgot everything, so equip the expedition and climb into this cave again, which is remarkable, together with Sarah. And here is the first stupidity of the script. In this expedition, 6 people, while they do not even tell the others where they are going, just slip away from the place where everyone is looking. How can you be such an idiot? Stupid Americans! (c)
What awaits us inside? It’s the same as the first one, only twice as bad. The sequel rule. And we see absolutely the same pictures. They find a mountain of bones, one woman has fallen, they are separated, a woman fights with a monster in some pit full of shit (literally), they just stand, and monsters pass by... It's all the same. At the same time, if in the previous part there was a group of girls, their fear, uncoordinated actions and obvious mistakes were quite understandable and explainable, then here is the Savior, Mother Her, Expedition! And they squeal and dull like a bunch of drunk teenagers.
Some interest in the plot wakes up after the appearance of Juneau, her fate in the original was left behind, so it is very pleasant to see her. Actually, Juneau and Sarah pull the whole film, only they try to play at least a little, the rest are irritating mercilessly.
Overall, the movie isn’t bad, especially if it wasn’t the first one. There's less atmosphere, but there's just as much blood, there's freaks jumping out and there's faint light in the cave. Everything you need to evaluate
The first "Descent" was released in 2005 and had considerable audience success, with a budget of 3.5 million euros, collecting a box office of 57 million dollars and earning the title of "the best horror film of the year" according to the Saturn film award. But the point, in fact, is not in this movie, but in its sequel, which was released in 2009 and in the plot plan directly continues the events of the first part. Cave and ambient-claustrophobic semi-dark horror with the presence of unexplored pest troglodyte (unlike them, the creatures do not have not only abundant hairiness, like troglodytes, but do not have it at all, having adapted to live in complete darkness using noises and sounds as a guide) dirty and vile force, bloodliness of disassemblies and conscience made bloody/dirty/fecal makeup of heroes.
At the same time, at first glance, all these narrow and long caves should cause a feeling of isolation and claustrophobic, but I did not cause; breathless breath in the hope that the creatures did not hear any rustle, but I did not involuntarily do it; feelings for the heroes, but they were not close either. Simply put, the film did not create an atmosphere, but it had excellent monsters, abundant makeup of dirt and blood on the characters, at one point found more fecal masses, and an unexpected ending.
In search of a group of lovers of cave beauty and mobility inside them, the same amateurs and amateurs went from the first part (female characters were diluted with male ones), but already under the supervision of the police. At the same time, in a random driver of the local road of the Appalachian mountains, a girl Sarah finds her salvation, after all, from the cave she found a way out. On the screens come the sadugs-policemen – not only that they resented the fact that Sarah after the most difficult and terrible events in her life fell asleep under sleeping pills (" We have five girls missing, and you let her sleep!), and also dragged her to the same caves back. Aren't they monsters? Sarah, although she does not really remember anything, but she scoffs from every rustle and sound, in addition, having already appeared for a long time the character who sincerely annoyed me with his whole nature (I do not know why, but somehow). And, look, something to the characters kind of strange wink one of the minor men (not in vain, not in vain, remember my words, comrade knows what is down there), whose father worked in this abandoned wooden church, under which these cave passages sprawled (ba! There, at the bottom, even an elevator is available, in which the team descended, without even checking whether it works at all after another hundred years of musty waiting. And in the narrow and dark cave passages, you know, there's no mobile phone network, gigabit wi-fi is not available, hot dogs with mustard are not sold, and even a toilet with lilac-smelling toilet paper is not near at all. Well, you had to think before a group of speleologists and policemen went down there. Cliffs, collapses, screams, screams, people cut off from each other physically, wandering in the singular through the local reserve of miraculous aggressive force in the form of humanoid creatures. And the latter do not sit, and football after a bottle of beer do not watch in their rooms of stalactites, the latter are looking, prowling and whistling to devour them. The viewer will not even need to get up and turn the tumbler of the confrontation mode on his blue TV receivers, it begins by itself - troglodytes with a smooth and ugly body run for uninvited meat, and uninvited meat is looking for a way out of the situation, and at the same time out of the cave.
Attention, first of all, from the outside, is caused by monster creatures that resembled Krip from the 2004 film of the same name (this is where the subway was). Monsters are ugly, dirty white in their color, because of life in the dark blind, but in view of this they have a very sensitive hearing, voracious, sexual organs, I did not notice (at the same time, the presence of long black hair on one of the creatures indicates its female gender, therefore, the sexual classification of them is present). In general, they are similar to orcs, especially in their aggressive actions and their cry. They live here, do not touch anyone, only lost animals are dragged to themselves - there is a need, and here all sorts of climb, shine with lanterns, look for something, "it is their fault" - sucking bone marrow from the pelvic bones of the next victim will say troglodyte, and will be right.
Among the victims, a pair of male speleologists is formed, a pleasant speleologist-girl (the owner of a sexually frightened face), a saduga-policeman (for his own misfortune and for his own stupidity, he chained himself with handcuffs to Sarah so that she did not escape... well, what are the handcuffs in the caves where death lies around every corner?), Sarah, a survivor and sent back, a black policewoman with a Nokia phone advertisement, as well as a reunion in the form of another animal that is turning into an animal, another girl Junozali (directly Tarchi).
And what is the cavernousness of darkness, where the light does not blind the eye and blow the freshness of the breeze? The caves, of course, are infinitely better than those from the movie Between the Worlds, but they did not inspire fear and suspense. Moreover, I liked the abandoned church and the very idea that the cult building hides something nasty and sinister (just like in the movie Jeepers Creepers).
Others write that the film became more bloody and cruel in comparison with the first part, and the crumbs of memories of it, I think, in the first film there was more atmosphere. Here the authors went in the direction of the external and eloquent, beating the story in the same almost identical way.
Not just a sequel about some “left” heroes who descended into abandoned mines. Namely, the extension. And so logical, so complementary, so necessary that after watching you can ask yourself, how did I ever watch the first part, without thinking about the continuation. Two movies like Hansel and Gretel, Chip and Dale, Bonnie and Clyde.
As soon as I realized that the heroine is the same one who was saved in the first Descent, Sarah, remembered one of the stalking rules of “horror”: “If you managed to survive in the first part, never agree to play in the sequel, you will die.” And that's why I was more worried about her in this movie than usual.
The film is quite emotional, because at the beginning of the film, Sarah, lying in the hospital, did not cause sympathy from the local sheriff. He literally makes her go down there in a zombie-like state. I was very resentful. I remember the "horror" rule.
Moreover, this sheriff, already underground, cuffed himself to her (so that Sarah would not run away). “Is Sarah going to die for him now?” There's always someone in horror movies who's annoying. Indeed, you need such heroes, at the death of which you receive not the same word as pleasure (and if they are not killed, at least an impatient desire that it finally happens). And this hero without evil just can not look. Especially after he called someone "at the right time."
It was great when the characters came across the half-eaten bodies of Sarah’s friends, left in the same positions as in the first film. And it would seem that the dungeon is also a dungeon in Africa, but every cave, every tunnel is recognizable!
When someone does get out in the fresh air, it will feel like during the first Descent – that we, the audience, got freedom, light and the sky overhead.
In general, the second descent with the audience was successful. In depth
There’s nothing more hopeless than making a sequel to horror movies, especially those that didn’t end in a happy ending. This genre is very weakly sequelizable, much better comes out with remakes, but that’s another conversation. Previous unsuccessful experiences with “The Bell,” “The Curse,” or “The Report” taught filmmakers nothing. The thirst for money again and again drives them to top up profitable places, trying to squeeze out of “drowned girls and walking dead” a little more ringing coins.
Descent 2 continues this negative experience. The first film was so complete and complete that making a sequel was a particular perversion. Moreover, Neil Marshall as a director and screenwriter was replaced in the chair by an unknown newcomer John Harris.
The main problem with sequels is what? In the serial number: after all, everything is known in comparison, right? And the second part of this indisputably cult horror no comparison with the first does not stand.
How did you get the original? First of all, a deep psychological game: five girls lost in a maze of caves. The underground monsters are still far away, and we are already enthusiastic about the battle of “other monsters”: hidden grievances and omissions between the girls. And old as the world fear of man before confined rooms and darkness along with impeccable sound, and here you have the perfect horror. In addition to all of the above, “Descent” is one of those rare films, the plot of which was absolutely unpredictable.
The second part begins where the original ended. It seems that the recipe is observed: the same main character, the same caves, characters, are about to fight with each other, but you can not deceive your eyes and heart. It's not scary anymore, it's stupid. All further events are guessed in five minutes, including the order of the victims. Prototypes of heroes are primitive and stereotyped, even those girls who played in the previous film. Not knowing how to tie two paintings into one, the creators awarded one heroine amnesia, and the second madness. I think, it is not necessary to mention that the floor of the film to us in flashbacks will actively resemble the events of the first part.
Yes, we have to admit that the sequel has become tougher, increased in blood. Claims to camera work are the least, and it does not redeem the dialogues sucked out of the finger, designed to diversify the whole performance, until another obscurantist jumps out of the darkness.
In those rare moments when a film becomes interesting, it simply copies the work of the original. Few waited for the final will sincerely spread their hands, because such an idiotic end I have not seen for a long time.
But the film is full of tasteless dismemberment, and there is also a mobile phone of a famous Finnish company, which gave more screen time than some characters.
To the furnace!

In most cases, the word “cheap” is a disrespectful sentence for a painting that was initially considered unworthy to invest more money in. The exceptions are stupid blockbusters, in the special effects of which a lot of money is buried in order to blind and cover up the complete absence of the plot. But this is the extreme - long live moderation. The film “Descent” is a rare example of the category of paintings that a modest (even poor) budget only flatters, because, having a minimum of improvised funds – five little-known actresses, a cave, three make-up extras – the filmmakers managed to create a very strong thriller on the burning theme of the struggle for survival.
Someone can say that before us is a one-celled horror movie, where a group of athletes are step by step sent to the next world by underground creatures, but I will tell you that monsters here serve only as a background catalyst, the same element of external danger as, say, a rockfall that flooded the exit from the tunnel system, while a real bloody drama, because of which, in general, we twitch, unfolds inside a female team locked underground. The first part, I repeat, was plotted very qualitatively with scanty financial costs, correctly betting on the natural, underlying fears of any person - like, say, the fear of a confined space (buried alive under a pile of stones), or the fear of being sacrificed by their own friends; and therefore the second part of those who tried the first, waited with great impatience.
According to all the laws of the sequel, the creators pulled out all the winning elements from the original and, having slightly modified the plot, reassembled, adding 2-3 unexpected feints. If anyone remembers, the finale of the first “Descent” was striking precisely by its ambiguity: it seems that a feral girl got out of the cave, but after a second we see her again in a stone bag in a minute of farewell to her daughter. Did she survive? The answer is at the discretion of the viewer. I was convinced not. But the creators of the second part brought her to the surface, to a few hours later, deprived of memory due to severe trauma, to return to the dungeon at the head of a tiny expedition to rescue her friends. Poor woman...
The second part completely repeats the first in terms of the scheme: the cut off path to salvation, the attack of creatures, the splitting of the group into individuals, the sacrifice by a neighbor in the name of his own salvation, but, as I said, there are a couple of pocket aces in the arsenal of Descent 2 - a couple of moments that made me nervous. Although, for those who are familiar with the horror genre (and there is a fight for survival in it by default), there may not be anything unexpected in the continuation of “Descent”.
For me, the beauty of Descents is almost magically identifying with the characters. In the first part, as they crawled through the narrow tunnel, I suffocated and panicked as if I myself was stuck in a stone sarcophagus, and in the second I felt so clearly trapped in the stones (from which, of course, no one will pull you out) that tears came to my eyes with despair and self-pity. More specifically, heroin, but how did I understand it? He was still standing there and holding on.
In the first part, as we remember, the heroines were all women. Someone did not like it, because completely excluded the romantic line, and someone probably attracted, because women, initially weaker, somehow more worried. Here the picture is 50/50, there are both, and who is more sorry - decides the viewer.
Bottom line: I liked the sequel to Descent as much as the original. Its creators brought everything positive that we noted before to the sequel, and on an equally good level scared us and battered our nerves. And the dungeons with narrow tunnels and rockfalls, as it turned out, scare me a lot. Give me air!
In the dark First of all, pay attention to the writers. Jay Blakeson is not a remarkable and weak figure, for James McCarthy it is a debut at all, as well as director John Harris, and James Watkins had a hand in the weakest and most boring “Paradise Lake”, disgusting “Missing”, and to a good horror “One Eye”, where the script is saved by his partner David Hilton. Trinity of talented authors, in three heads trying to dock the continuation with the first part, stamping conveyor clone without originality, soul and expressiveness. In fact, miraculously, the survivor Sarah from the first film is forced to return with the rescue team to the caves. Not only does the idea itself sound stupid, and on the screen is served at all ridiculous and without any logic and adequacy, so under the ground they find not only corpses and monsters, but also the girl Rambo, mowing under Alice from “Resident Evil”, and is one of the friends of the main character, again miraculously survived for several days in these caves. Faced with rather creepy creatures, they ride a struggle for survival with unequal chances of success. What at first was a forty-minute chatter without meaning or need, by the middle, overgrown with the atmosphere of the first part, copying individual moments, as if it were a comedy that beats stamps. Starting from the first appearance of the creatures and bloody attacks on rescuers, the film slides into some kind of slaughterhouse, where the characters completely eliminate dozens of hostile creatures, and they do not even think to decrease in number. A senseless slaughter, where no one is sorry: the characters are not revealed, the characters came out vile and not pleasant, and you watch this nonsense only with one hope that someday they will all die and the credits will go, but the ending turns into an even more ridiculous farce than one could imagine. The right sequel would focus on a new team with a back story of each character, even without monsters on the screen, it would be possible to unfold the conflict and the main types that change along the course of the action and development of the story. A proper sequel would shed light on the nature of underground monsters, partly explaining their existence. A good sequel would not be ridiculous to resurrect long-dead characters, just to convey greetings to the first part, but would follow the logic of the narrative and would tell about the interesting conduct of the rescue operation. Unfortunately, there is nothing right or good in the film. If the first part was a unique female composition, the sequel waves a gray prefabricated solyak. If in the original “Descent” each character is unique and interesting, then in the continuation of the characters do not even have a chance to turn around against the background of absurdity of actions. And if the first film pressed claustrophobic and tension in the most dangerous moments, making you worry about the characters, the sequel turned out to be what Rob Zombie turned “Halloween 2” – a boring thrash for home video, with good scenes of violence, but completely poor plot. Unlike Halloween 2, it’s even worse. The number of murders, if you take only people, has not been spectacular, and none of them, perhaps, can scare. There are more abominations, but in the absence of an atmosphere, such scenes do not look shocking and everything looks dry, emotionless, stupid. Yes, of course, something here can be especially remembered, such as a rat, a crushed head and a long-chopped hand, and let it look quite high-quality, it is better for fans of such scenes to watch another “Saw”, where the action makes sense, the plot is not one idea, and the plot is for the most part laid out interestingly and always pleases with its unexpected turns. “Descent 2” can hardly be called even a horror film, it is some rather pathetic parody, looking like an amateur film shot by amateurs. What is the reason for such poor and miserable work? In the inability of writers to create a complete story together? In the incompetence of a director who is not able to correctly translate written or achieve acting? In the most absurd of the idea to continue where everything is already finished and self-sufficient? It is difficult to answer, but apparently in all this, plus everything in the inability of the actors to show the features of the game on the screen when submitting their images-characters, in the very selection of casting, because of which you yawning, look at a bunch of gray mice, and of course it is worth scolding the producers that give money is not clear what, and allow such ugly miscarriages to appear. Trying to sit at the screen all the timekeeping, involuntarily trying to cling to at least some positive sides. And here is really still a good makeup and you can repeat the words about high-quality bloody effects. However, both of these advantages have a chic first part, where in addition to them there is a whole kaleidoscope of advantages, as well as other excellent horror films. So why cling to the lonely, slim pluses of a really bad movie to justify themselves, who decided to watch it, and the film itself in their own eyes. It remains only to admit that all this adventure in the dark is nothing more than an unsuccessful bi-movic, in which only artists tried, saving somehow the visual series of indistinct delusional script. We also hope that we will not see more directorial works by John Harris, as well as Descent 3. Because after such a film is terrible not from a quality horror story, but terrible for the genre itself, where it is necessary to appear one expressive work, as a bunch of ugly barely breathing clones-twins are born, intending to cash in on fame and drowning in the sea of their own garbage, decaying before their eyes. Unsuccessful and unnecessary continuation, not deserving of audience attention. Forget like a dream in a fit of delirium and admit that there is only one "Descent" - the first! And nothing but. 3 IZ 10 Original
