See you in the grave. Our time is approaching. Well, we didn't win. We'll die in the arena. All the better, not bald, from women, from drinking. The sky above the Colosseum is also blue. As for our homeland, which we have left in vain. For the truth, and for the riches of the Romans. We are not offended, is that an insult? It's just that, apparently, we got a planid. Our time is approaching... People are already settled. We'll die in the arena. People want shows. . (Joseph Brodsky)
The film Ridley Scott "Gladiator" is one of the films that tell about the times of the great Roman Empire.
The film takes place during the war with the Germanic tribes, which are defeated by the army of the Romans under the leadership of the famous commander Maximus ( Russell Crowe). Maximus is shown to be an experienced, fearless and hardened warrior in numerous battles who is ready to go into battle for the glory of Rome and the emperor Marcus Aurelius, who treats Maximus as his own son. This attitude very offends the son of Mark - Commod (Joaquin Phoenix). Scott showed Commodus as a cruel and envious heir to Mark, but the reasons for this behavior can also be understood. In the last scene of Commodus and Mark, this resentment is felt for the fact that his own father did not pay him due attention and did not treat him as his own son, preferring the one who really brought glory to Rome. Commodus has a sister, Lucilla, whom he really loves, but not quite like his sister, and even in this situation he feels rejected.
Each character in this film has their own drama and each has their own. If before Maximus fought for the glory of Rome, after his forced exile, his meaning of life is to carry out revenge for his murdered relatives. Before the Emperor Marcus Aurelius is a difficult choice, whom to give Rome after death, Commodus seeks recognition from his father and the inhabitants of Rome, and Lucilla after the death of her father seems to be locked up in prison, as she is in danger, and all because her son Lucius is one of the heirs to the throne and she fears for his life, knowing the character of his brother, who still becomes the new emperor for the time.
Gladiator is a film worthy of all its awards and nominations, which shows the culture of the Roman Empire in all its glory, and complements its beautiful soundtrack from Hans Zimmer. I also like the selection of actors. The film essentially became the hallmark of Russell Crowe, and Joaquin Phoenix for his role as Commodus could and should have been given an Oscar.
Gladiator is a rather inspiring epic picture, telling the classic story of Mozart and Salieri with envy and genius elevated to absolute. However, the film loses its charm when it comes to historical accuracy.
The main character seems not just a brilliant general and an unsurpassed warrior, but a real god. Sometimes he wins battles through his unmistakable strategy, but there are moments in the film when Maximus demonstrates inhuman strength and abilities. All this, of course, is made for entertainment, but realism is what should be present in a historical film.
Needless to say, the events shown in the film never really happened? I guess not.
Therefore, I will evaluate this film not as historical, but as artistic.
And here we can say that the story is really touching and interesting, albeit a little primitive. You can not complain about the performance of the actors - each of them perfectly played his role and showed all the necessary emotions. Commodus appears as a pitiful and incompetent ruler, who gained power through violence and deceit, and yet he pales against the background of truly talented and strong people. Despite the fact that Maximus does not need power, Commod is disgusted with the idea of the very existence of a man who will surpass him and whom the people sympathize with. Maximus is a classic image of a valiant, faithful, righteous warrior who is ready to give his life for the people dear to him and for his beliefs. He lost everything and practically fell. But the thought of revenge kept him from giving up. Dum spiro, spero - Maximus could not despair, for the thought that the fate of Rome was in the hands of the wrong man.
In general, the film conveys its message well, the actors coped well with their task, the atmosphere, music, scenery and special effects also do not cause negative emotions. It is worth noting that in some places Rome seems too unrealistic. The historicity of the film is on the other side of the scale, and so this film is neither good nor bad. It is the same as all other Hollywood films made for the general public. He leaves mixed impressions, which tend rather to a positive color.
From the first minutes of viewing the film Ridley Scott “Gladiator” fascinates with its scale, mass, epic. A large number of actors and people from extras took part in the shooting. The film uses a large number of recreated ancient equipment and weapons. Selected costumes not only for the main characters, but also extras, clearly convey the era of antiquity. And even if somewhere in the episodes we catch the eye of an atypical style of dress for that time, it does not interfere, and even emphasizes the brightness and individuality of the character.
All this easily transports the viewer to the times of ancient Rome. The director perfectly shows the ancient culture, which, in turn, became the basis for European culture, with all its advantages and disadvantages.
Today, there are few films that are so big. A good example is the battle scenes in the forests of Germany or in the Colosseum. Of course, it was not without the use of computer graphics. But it was so carefully applied that it allows the ordinary viewer not to notice it.
In all this cinematic art it is impossible not to mention the music of the composer Hans Zimmer. Every movement of the actors, every look is transmitted against the background of sounds, which clearly reflects the denunciation of the director. To emphasize the feelings, stir up the emotions of the viewer is easily achieved by Ridley Scott using soundtracks.
And, of course, the performance of actors Russell Crowe and Joaquin Phoenix is beyond praise. Famous actors were able to show both the nobility and depravity of man.
Russell Crowe as Maximus, a brave military commander, teaches the viewer not to give up, to go to the end. Joaquin Phoenix as the ruler of Commodus managed to show all the rottenness and viciousness of his character.
The director managed to show in the film the spirit of that time, the time of the great empire of Rome. Everything beautiful that made Rome great (science, art) falls under the greed, cruelty, ignorance of people. “Bread and circuses” is the basis of people management. And in this chaos of inhumanity there will always be those who will bring light and hope to people.
Great movie, great story. The purpose of any work of art is to stir up the feelings of a person, to bring goodness and teach a person to think. This film has rightly fulfilled its mission.
Gladiator is one of the most popular films not only about the Roman Empire, but also about ancient culture and history in general. Despite this, the atmosphere of immersion in this historical period, even with scenery and costumes, for some reason I did not have. Ancient culture is the basis of European culture. This explains the interest of directors and screenwriters to write a story about Ancient Rome and the interest of viewers to view. Ancient history is an object of study and admiration even in our time for all age categories and social strata.
The film is exciting, some scenes are difficult to break away from. But the duration of the film, namely 3 hours, can alienate viewers and become a test during viewing. I confess, some scenes could be shortened, because outside of action-moments, concentration disappears.
Very pleased with the visual component of the picture, it can be noted as the best part of Gladiator. Both entertainment and special effects are worthy of recognition even now. I wouldn’t say it was a 2000 movie. Movies and errors, if any, are completely invisible. The work of costume designers and makeup artists deserves praise, the characters look great on the screen, the background and extras do not differ in style from the main characters, everything is very harmonious. The shooting locations both inside the building and outside are very elaborate and large-scale, the overall picture itself is very attractive both for the viewer and for the connoisseur of a separate visual aspect.
I would also like to mention the musical accompaniment. The soundtracks for the film are very pleasant to the ear, the compositions convey the mood of the characters, complement the scenes of the film, make you plunge deeper into the atmosphere of what is happening.
To be honest, Russell Crowe’s performance didn’t really impress me. The whole development of the protagonist follows the cycle of stability-tragedy-decay-uplift, and so time after time, per fas et nefas (all truths and untruths), he overcomes difficulties. But not to say that Maximus shows a lot of emotions, sometimes the expression of his face is incredibly boring. I can highlight Joaquin Phoenix’s performance, Commodus is the most vivid character in history for me. Beautifully shown and emotions, and internal contradictions of the hero. If some actions of Commodus cause dislike and even disgust, they are shown extremely interesting for the viewer. Against the background of many antiheroes of such “classic” and entrenched in the film industry, Joaquin’s character is really catchy and attractive. I would also like to mention Connie Nielsen. Her heroine got a difficult fate not only in the plot itself, but also responsibility as the only female character. Sometimes there was a feeling that there were only a couple of women in the entire Roman Empire. Her behavior towards the emperor is not so much bold as ill-conceived in terms of the dangers to which it may lead.
On top of everything else, I really liked the dynamics of Maximus’ relationship with other heroes. Secondary characters are remembered, you empathize with them, you are afraid for their fate.
The film is not without absurdity in some aspects. I will not go into the truth of the facts, but some points may seem very illogical, for example, the actions of the characters in accordance with their social position.
Overall, the film is normal. Classic, base, anything extraordinary now the viewer will not find, his influence, I think, was more noticeable in those years when he came out. A pleasant picture, a pleasant sound, a simple plot - a film at once.

Antique culture is the basis of European culture, this, in my opinion, is one of the reasons for the increased interest in this film.
Antiquity, depicted in works of art, still retains relevance and importance for modern society. Showed modes and norms of morality and morality are different from the usual to us. However, that doesn’t make them any less interesting to us, people who are used to seeing the world with different eyes.
O tempora, o mores!
The plebeians shown in the film are very reminiscent of us - the audience.
Emotions, shouts and hum raised by ancient spectators are an expression of delight and thirst for new spectacles. The same emotional and eager to learn the plot of the film can feel the audience of our time.
After watching the film, a very vivid impression remains, a whole mixture of emotions and thoughts is felt, new food for thought appears.
Thanks to the plot of the film Gladiator, the viewer is imbued with the way of life of ancient times, begins to compare it with his being. The viewer becomes available (to project) to adapt the plot of the film to the modern world. Due to this, the film not only shows part of the history of the ancient world, but also affects the perception of the reality of modern man.
The general who became a slave, the slave who became the greatest gladiator
The film "Gladiator" captures from the first seconds of viewing. The audience sees beautiful scenes. Visually, the film turned out to be very rich: beautiful landscapes, epicly shot battle scenes, high-quality scenery - all this creates a stunning atmosphere, when watching, there is a feeling of presence inside the story.
The plot of the film is based on the confrontation of two characters - General Maximus (Russell Crowe) and Emperor Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix). It is worth noting the outstanding acting, which gave us such vivid and memorable images.
Maximus' life changed dramatically after his betrayal: he was captured and became a gladiator. And the main law of gladiatorial battles was: “Either win or die,” or, as the Romans themselves would say: “Aut vincere, aut mori,” that is, it was an extremely cruel world in which Maximus had to plunge headlong.
Emperor Commodus, in turn, appears to be a cruel, gloomy, eccentric man who wants to gain fame and popularity, the love of the crowd, but does not know how to achieve this.
Of course, ancient culture is the basis of European culture, so the plot of betrayal, revenge and struggle for power could be called clichéd, but not in this film. Here is a very original and colorful presentation of the story, interesting plot twists. The film keeps in suspense all the time, I do not want to break away from it.
I recommend this film to everyone: both those who are fond of the culture of the Roman Empire, and those who just want to see a quality and spectacular film.

“Gladiator” is an unconditional masterpiece that leaves deep emotional traces in the hearts of the audience.
Russell Crowe as Maximus Decimus Meridius is great. His charisma and willpower penetrate the screen, forcing us to participate in his every step and fight. What is particularly striking is how he is going to win Per fas et nefas. Joaquin Phoenix as the evil Emperor Commodus creates an unrivalled antagonist that evokes our rage and contempt.
The script of Gladiator is a real treasure. He competently combines dramatic turns, exciting battles in arenas and complex characters. The film not only entertains, but also makes you think about the value of freedom, justice and loyalty to their ideals.
The visual effects and set design of Gladiator are stunning. From ancient Roman amphitheaters to epic battles, each scene impresses with its quality and detail.
“Gladiator” is a movie that turned the genre and left an indelible mark in the history of cinema. This is a film that should be seen by all lovers of quality cinema and historical dramas. Ancient culture is the basis of European culture.
An amazing film in the style of my favorite antiquity. And the topic of gladiatorial fights is close to me.
The battle scenes were spectacular, chariots and tigers delighted. The costumes are authentic and there are no questions for designers. The film pleases with high-quality shots, camera work at a height, except that Slow-mo sometimes embarrassed, but then it probably seemed something cool. The dialogue in the film is good, there are no complaints, as well as in general to the acting. Joaquin Phoenix played particularly well in his role as a psychopath. The scenery is made at a high level, personally I managed to immerse myself in the atmosphere of the ancient world.
The plot is not without flaws, in the battle of Caesar with the slave is not much to believe, even if it is a rather spectacular scene. And in general, I did not understand what the problem was to kill or even severely maim Maximus so that he could not fight. But I don’t want to be very picky, I don’t expect the credibility of the film. This is not a documentary film.
So we have a great movie in the setting of the Roman Empire. With good actors, a good plot and spectacular scenes. There are touching moments and a microscopic love line. The downsides are in the script, but I don’t want to be too picky.
The film is beautiful, lovers of antiquity and the Middle Ages will definitely come.
Maximus is a brave, courageous leader. He effortlessly instills morale in the army. He is respected, loved not only by soldiers, but also by the ruler himself. But he was tired of fighting and winning. Most of all, he wants to go home to his wife and son.
Commod is the exact opposite of Maximus. Vile, afraid of everything from darkness to battle, unable to make his own decisions. It is incredibly vain and thirsty for power. Most of all, he wants to have what Maximus has – the love and respect of the ruler. His words: “I will flood the whole world with blood, as long as you love me.”
Of course, fate does not turn out as Maximus would like. He has a long way to go before meeting his wife and son. The path of Maximus goes through all stages of “Thousand-Face Hero” by Joseph Campbell.
Russell Crowe is great in the image of Maximus. His eyelids hang over his eyes, tired, almost lifeless. It is full of wisdom and thirst for revenge. His strong deeds, bravery, and “uninhibitability” instill in the audience the same fighting spirit as he instills in soldiers on the battlefield. After all, with these actions he teaches us not to give up, to go to the end to our goal.
Joaquin Phoenix is so great that a couple of times it seemed like I couldn't contain my nausea. It's just a traumatized child. He reminded me of Joffrey from Game of Thrones. Throughout the film, as the admiration for Maximus grows endlessly, disgust for the character grows. This contrast is beautiful.
The mood of almost every scene is colored by music. The main soundtrack – majestic, brisk something reminded me of the soundtrack from the movie “Pirates of the Caribbean”. The rest of the compositions are also well selected, each makes you feel the scene even more.
I also want to talk about the dialogue in the film. They're very bright and interesting. Each of them either reveals the character, or makes you think about life, or carries an interesting conflict that heats up our interest in the picture.
There is much to be said about this film. Characters, plot twists, dialogue, music. Everything here is interesting and can serve as a reason for discussion.
The fact that the movie “Gladiator” is necessary to watch – no doubt.
To get carried away by cinema and not know about the cult peplum of Ridley Scott - "Gladiator" 2000 is impossible. I even had a VHS tape with this movie when I was a kid, but I honestly didn’t like it at the time. The film itself is not without merit.
Right away, I treat fiction normally when it's appropriate. So I don't mind that in the film the real history of the Roman Empire is changed. One thing is confusing – the title of “general” in ancient Rome? Really? This title did not even appear in Rome, but in France in the seventeenth century. Why didn't Maximus be made a "generalissimus"? And also confused that in the tent of Marcus Aurelius installed giant candles directly under the fabric. This is the Darwin Prize of the first category. But these are small things.
Dignities
Whatever I say, the main advantage of Gladiator is that it is very spectacular and epic. The main merit in this is a great timekeeping, so the film slowly concentrates on every stage of Maximus’ life, be it wars with the Germans, grief from the loss of his family, gladiatorial career, participation in a conspiracy against Commodus, etc. Each episode is shown in detail and revealed.
Important - a chic soundtrack from Hans Zimmer and Lisa Gerrard. Especially the famous song "Now we are free."
In addition, excellent decorations and buildings. Nice costumes. Very spectacular battles, especially chic was the battle in the Colosseum against the army of chariots.
So like peplum, this movie is very healthy.
Problems
It will sound strange that the epic and slowness of the film is also its disadvantage. The film, in some places, is so slow that it begins to cause boredom. Here slowly show the adventures of Maximus, conversations Commodus and sister. As a result, I personally never liked Gladiator, because it is too slow and devoid of any dynamics, from which it is not a desire to review it (in contrast to Troy or 300).
The main reason why the film is boring, but not its duration, but the main character is Maximus. What a prickly, sweet-sweet-pathetic-perfect character he is. It's annoying! Maximus is all so noble, kind, humane, just, tragic, elevated above all other Romans that I'm really surprised why he doesn't have a halo over his head during the film. Maximus is a Roman "Mary Sue," a very perfect character who is boring because of it. Yes, he faces big problems, but he solves them one or two times and it has no special consequences.
I really envy people who write that Maximus is very interesting. He's boring because of his perfection. It’s sometimes said that the most boring character in culture is Superman because he’s perfect and has no flaws or weaknesses. Superman has a weakness - Kryptonite and Lex Luther's enemy, who can fool him. What's Maximus' weakness? It can be made interesting in two ways:
1) To make him an antihero, which would be right, because he is a resident of slave-holding Rome. The same as were Achilles from "Troys", Caesar from the TV series "Rome", Aetius from the TV series "Attila the Conqueror" that is a character who does not shy away from killing innocents. Especially if you read the biographies of famous Roman commanders (Caesar, Scipio, Pompey, Crassus, Octavian, Sulla, North) you can see that they all sometimes did not shy away from dirty methods.
But no, Maximus is extremely perfect and sublime, who if he kills, then just for the job. Look at the way it is presented. In the first scene, he looks at the bird with a baby smile. Have you ever seen a bird before?
2 Had he been perfect, he would have faced serious difficulties from which he would have had great difficulty. For example, King Leonid of 300 Spartans, who had to fight with the great forces of the Persians, or Ben-Hur from the 1959 film, who faced really similar life difficulties. But no, Maximus goes through everything like a knife through butter and he does not care.
You think I'm exaggerating with pathos? Knowing Ridley Scott's love of biblical references, tell me someone hand on heart that the episode where Maximus hangs on the cross in front of Commod, who torments him is not an homage to Jesus Christ and Pontius Pilate? And the ending is so pretentious that you want to hit your forehead. Again, say that Maximus is not parallel in the end with Jesus?
The most interesting character in the film is Commodus (played by the future Joker, Joaquin Phoenix). Yes, he is a scoundrel, but he has reasons to be so and he is much more interesting than a sterile Maximus.
Another problem is the attempt to transfer to ancient Rome the ideals of modern America. A little background: there is such a cliché that the main character evokes sympathy, it is necessary to make it as close as possible to our time. Therefore, Tsar Leonid in “300” says the text of the U.S. Constitution, and Spartacus from the film Kubrick in 1960. being a Roman slave, almost “Declaration of Human Rights” voices.
Here and there, Emperor Marcus Aurelius finds himself tired of conquest and wants to return power to the senate to make Rome a republic, again. But in the scene before that, Aurelius tells Maximus that Rome is devouring corruption and intrigue ... and so you want to give power to an organ of noble and rich people? Aurelius was a philosopher, not a fool.
Does he really understand who causes corruption? I think Ridley Scott confused the Roman Senate with the American Senate. In the United States, elected representatives of the people sit in the Senate, so the Senate has power (and even there are lobbyists and corruption). In Rome, the Senate was filled with rich and noble citizens who cared so much about the problems of the Roman people. Rome became an empire because people were fed up with the squabbles and intrigues of the Senate, and before that the Romans did not mind when Caesar declared himself dictator for life, for the same reason.
Commodus's logic is strange, too. He wants to dissolve the senate. But then they say the Senate is made up of his spies. Then why disband him? On the contrary, it's in your favor. You have a handy authority and the people will not be angry.
Conclusion: I'm not retracting my words. Gladiator is a very epic film and strongly influenced other peplumas (Troy, 300, Pompeii, Centurion). It is funny that in his film Exodus, Scott sometimes copied scenes from Gladiator.
But the problem is that due to the boring and licked main character, the film is very boring. And how infuriating when Americans can not accept that somewhere lived well without their democracy, and therefore we need to stick the idea that the Romans were burdened by the empire and wanted freedom.

Watching this work of art, one gets the impression of a banal story about a guy who commits revenge for a lost family, but this is not true. I saw in this film a story about a man who wants a peaceful life, but due to circumstances he has to solve the problems of the whole country. You can also notice the heroism of gladiators who are ready to give their lives not even for freedom itself, but for the honor of fighting. You can ask yourself what is more important than “Death in the glory” or “A quiet life”.
I personally liked the final scene of Maximus' battle with the New Caesar. For the sake of political supremacy, he was ready to enter the arena and prove to everyone that the Great Emperor had defeated the invincible. Thus, cementing his reign and name in history.
And despite what I wrote above, the film shows that the main antagonist of the film wants ordinary human love. From his sister, and from his father, and from the people.
Very good game from Russell Crowe and Joaquin Phoenix (you can write about it separately).
Russell Crowe is a very scandalous character in the media sphere, but this work made history. Looking at him, you understand the main idea - the human spirit is difficult to break. Now about the most delicious Joaquin Phoenix this work announced to the whole world, and the world thereby opened one of the best actors in the history of the world, I am an actor myself and I understand how difficult this work is and how difficult it is to cope with in every look you can see pain, envy and hypocrisy.
Pros:
Setting the frame
acting
Directing work
script
soundtrack
Cons:
Some phrases are predicted in advance
The color palette in the opening scene is knocked out of the main color of the film.
It's a bit of a story.
Summing up, the film is good in its own way. It is light, the title reflects the main actions of the film, the viewer will definitely not be bored in the fighting scenes, but because of the prostate of the plot, I was able to predict a lot. Therefore, I believe that the film is one time and I rate it at a strong 8.
P.s. This is my first review of the film, if anyone likes it. I will review all 250 films. 'Thank you for the criticism'
A very successful film, it almost perfectly combines action, drama, dialogue and great music. Heroes are incredibly textured, Maximus himself, an example of a real man and hero, Commodus is a perverse mentally, but intelligent and interesting person in his own way. Lucilla is a typical victim of circumstance. Proximo is an ex-gladiator who has kept his principles even when he was rich. And many others. The film is incredibly beautiful, looks great now. What is the scene of the battle with the barbarians, opening the film? I would also like to highlight the historicity of the film. I have often heard complaints that this could not have happened. I was of the same opinion until I understood Roman history. And now I'm sure that the film is very historic, if the credits were unfashionable at the time, "based on real events" then it wouldn't be a lie. The only embarrassing thing is how Maximus was arrested and executed in his own camp. Otherwise, the emperor could choose his successor, and the most absurd battles could take place in the arena, not just myrmillon against the retiarius. And the emperor could enter the arena, there is nothing incredible in this for ancient Rome.

Films on the theme of history, especially antiquity, experienced a period of its heyday in the 20th century. The era of the so-called “peplums” gave us many iconic paintings about the history of ancient Greece, Rome, Egypt, etc. However, by the 21st century, such a movie came out less and less and ceased to be considered box office and popular. Until the Gladiator happened.
The director of the film is the cult Ridley Scott - a master of fiction and, as it later turned out, historical paintings. The movie was shot without much hope for great success, with a lot of problems, but the result amazed everyone.
The film presents a fictional story in the historical period of imperial Rome during the reign of Emperor Marcus Aulerius and his son Commodus. The main character - the Roman military commander Maximus is drawn into a struggle for power in the course of which he loses everything and by the will of fate finds himself in the school of gladiators with one desire - revenge.
The plot of the picture is quite a classic (and therefore understandable and popular) story about the place. However, in combination with a good production, actors and just great costumes and scenery, complemented by brilliant music, a wonderful effect is created - the film can not break away from literally everyone who sits down to watch it, regardless of age and gender - so prudently added elements for each audience category. From a historical point of view, the film is pure fantasy. Any historian will tear Gladiator to dust for inaccuracies, discrepancies of events, context, characters of historical characters, dating, clothing, environment, etc. But the film was clearly not shot for historians and connoisseurs of real ancient Rome - it was made in order to please everyone and interested in its theme. And he succeeded.
The main character performed by Russell Crowe came out without any surprises, but he was very suitable for this film and his image of a noble avenger, and played very successfully - everyone liked him. Other actors also very appropriately look at their roles and do not get out of the frame. As mentioned, the costumes and scenery here are very cool - everything looks large-scale, epic and juicy, although not very historical. Separately highlight the soundtrack - you will definitely remember it.
The film is not just collected a huge box office and received several Oscars - this is a form successful Hollywood mass film for everyone, while not particularly popular theme of history. The significance of the picture is indicated by the fact that he briefly provoked a real boom of historical paintings, but all of them were equally less successful than Gladiator. Definitely this film is a must-see, at least, as an example of a perfectly made mass film with high-quality content.

Along with "Alien" and "Blade Runner" this is the most famous film of Ridley Scott, thanks to which the director's career again went uphill at the beginning of the third millennium, and also returned the fashion to the previously lost popularity category of peplums. The success of "Gladiator" is largely due to chance, because because of problems with the script shooting began in confusion. The first scenes of the film, from which the creation began, in fact look somewhat chaotic, so an important influence on the film had the editor. Further scenes combined with excellent acting and the same successful music in 2000 pleased a lot of people.
But it is important to note that, having returned the fashion to peplum, Gladiator at the same time revived the confrontation between directors and historians. The action takes place at the end of the second century AD and many events from the life of the real Emperor Commodus are distorted for the sake of not so much entertainment as drama. The details surrounding the ancient war, as well as the battles in the arena, are often based on assumptions rather than documentary evidence. For example, what did the bend of the finger mean that decided the fate of a defeated warrior? Historical sources suggest that death, regardless of whether you turn your finger up or down. But the most noticeable mistake is already geographical in nature: one of the snakes that detractors throw to the secret enemy, lives in the countries of the New World, and could not appear in Rome until the beginning of the XVI century.
All this is trifles, I must admit, and the general spirit of the film conveys the sad features of ancient life: numerous wars, misogyny and, of course, slavery. Whether you were a military commander or a senator, a fatal mistake could have robbed you of your freedom and your family. The key feature of Gladiator, which became the basis of success, was precisely the struggle of Maximus for the values that remained after his moral defeat. In a world where much depends on brute force, he had to resort to brute force. Battles, especially in the arena, were filmed with special diligence. Armor, helmets, ringing blades, even fights with tigers – a high budget allowed Ridley Scott a lot. The music, which Hans Zimmer is involved in creating, complements the sad or uplifting atmosphere of the film, giving it a stronger emotional coloring. This, perhaps, causes the most empathy and drew attention in the troubled for cinema 2000.
The penetration of Russell Crowe brought the actor well-deserved fame. After Gladiator, his fees grew from 5 million to 20 million, and his name became as recognizable as Brad Pitt or Nicolas Cage. For Joaquin Phoenix, the role of Commodus, perhaps, became the most famous until the release of Joker in 2019, but the main evil lies in the drawback caused primarily by the imperfection of the script. Having no claims to Phoenix, it should be admitted that Commodus literally from the first frame looks and behaves so that his negative role and the upcoming denouement are too predictable. If there’s anything missing from Gladiator, it’s just intrigue, because the distinction between good and bad is too obvious. This circumstance becomes the only reason to question the praise of the film, although its merits at the same time should not be obscured either.

The first time I saw this movie was on a TV screen when many people didn’t have the internet. I have watched it more than once since then. The picture does not let you go, chains to itself, concentrating your attention only on it. The film looks great to this day, and has already become an immortal classic, conquering millions of viewers.
On the historical side, of course, there are many inconsistencies in the film: from the murder of Marcus Aurelius to some armor. But do not consider “Gladiator” as a historical film. This is primarily an artistic picture, you need to perceive the film in this way.
The film does not have a long introduction and immediately meets us with a powerful battle, spectacular and epic. At the same time, we are introduced to Maximus, a wonderful commander who did not stiffen in the war. He is not a “stupid warrior”, not an intrigue, but a man of duty. The role of Maximus was perfectly performed by Russell Crowe (but the role was originally intended for Mel Gibson).
Maximus does not want to fight or be the head of Rome. More than anything, he loves his family and wants to return to them. But fate ordered otherwise. This story is about how a man lost his freedom, he was made a slave, a thing, but he chose the path of battle in order to take revenge in the end.
Supporting actors also did well. Even secondary gladiators look organic against the background of the courageous Maximus, and are remembered for their images.
Gladiator is a film about strength, honor, valor, real courage, love and freedom, causing a wide range of emotions: from the excitement of battles to a coma in the throat in tragic moments. Excellent historical drama that will not leave indifferent any viewer. Highest appreciation for this picture.
This is probably one of Russell Crowe’s best roles. And, of course, one of Ridley Scott's finest works. You can talk a lot about a very conditional approximation to the recognized historical facts of that era, but this is a fiction, not a documentary or educational film. And in that sense, as old J.R.R. used to say, a good story is not a sin to embellish. And the plot is really great: there is sincere patriotism (both at the macro and micro levels), and love (fulfilled and unrealizable), and much more, not counting various hints of cultural and philosophical nature. Hans Zimmer’s soundtrack is also pleasing: Jivan Gasparyan’s unique duduk and Lisa Gerard’s deep vocals turn it into a real celebration for music lovers.
. . One of my first movies in the theater, and certainly the only one I’ve seen twice in a row. . .
As I remember, there was a huge and impressive video on TV. Posters on the theaters themselves. What can I say, in the trolley buses next to the ticket price hung a poster and the schedule of this film, and in the center of the A4 sheet adorned the Colosseum ... I was still a boy, a young schoolboy, but I could not help but appreciate the beauty of the film, music, Connie Nielsen and the tragedy of the finale. You know, it’s like in the “Titanic”, it seems that everything is not so bad: in the film about the ship, DiCaprio and the couple in love would be overwhelmed by household, grayness, darkness and, most likely, divorce... If only Maximus had survived... What's next? No wife. No son. Home too. Freedom ahead! To be an emperor or a general? Does he need it now... The only thing that could be real and definite is an affair with the Empress. The adoption of Lucius. Unless it's just that. And here I am sadly in solidarity with Scott and Crowe for deliberately changing the final for a happy ending for the sake of drama, logic, common sense and greatness! .
.. But there is an unspoken sequel to Gladiator exactly 10 years later called Robin Hood with the same director and the main star of the ancient Roman film. Time is different, other heroes and characters, and the essence, in fact, the manner and display - everything clearly refers to the realization of the desire of millions of viewers to see the continuation of the legendary film, which became the standard of modern historical cinema, revived the genre of peplum, forgotten almost as 50 years, revived the career of the venerable and fallen by that time Ridley Scott, who gave the world a little-known at that time Russell Crowe (which after 20 years is ashamed and terrible to look at because of desolation), which opened up to anyone unnecessary and poorly appreciated then Joaquin Phoenix, who opened the ideal queen of Ancient Rome, who embod the real life on the basis of the first two parts of Davedoria, and gave us a chance to enjoy the first two games. .
. . . A film that shouldn’t have shot in any way has been a special mark in my heart for my whole life, staying here for a long time. . .

p.s. There was a time when, to get the main film award of the planet, it was not necessary to remove transgender, gay, lesbian, African and Asian people in a mandatory manner, but it was possible to shoot a high-quality tape, where it was conducted about simple... A man. . .
Monumental historical epic, demonstrating the strength, honor and character of a man
180. Maximus wants only one thing: to return to his wife and son, whom he has not seen for more than two years. But the plans don't come true. As a result of a political conspiracy, he becomes a slave – a gladiator who kills for the amusement of the public. The talent of a warrior helps him become famous, and he gets a chance to take revenge.
The triumphant return of peplum (or the genre of “sword and sandals”) – a large-scale ancient legend with grandiose battles and a slightly fabulous tone of the narrative. It seemed that a similar movie ended in the 50s with “Ben Hur” and “Spartacus” Stanley Kubrick. For obvious reasons, such films are incredibly difficult to produce, and therefore every successful copy is so valuable. And “Gladiator” is one of the best not only in this genre, but in general in the whole classical cinema.
Such majesty cannot but bribe: before us is truly exciting and touching work. Spectacular, incredibly beautiful, albeit bloody, with brilliant music and great acting. The place and time of action are so far away from us, so incredible that the characters seem even grander, and what is happening is larger.
But behind all the external beauty of the film, the main thing is to consider the hero and an example of the behavior of such a strong character, a person full of dignity and power. A beautifully played character by Russell Crowe. Keeping calm, the verbose Maximus faces an unscrupulous apparent evil in the face of Commodus' nervous tantrum, matching Crowe's stunningly played by Joaquin Phoenix. Diameterally opposite characters pull each frame on themselves, and when they are in one scene – then they electrify the space even on the other side of the screen.
The brilliant soundtrack of Hans Zimmer, the main composer in modern cinema. He wrote the music for Pirates of the Caribbean, The Beginning and The Lion King. His music is an equally important hero and a component of the value of the film.
I love the first 15-20 minutes and the last 5 minutes. A walk through the field at dawn, a hand on ears, a lull before a battle, a passage through the battle ranks and a speech before a fight. "Who will help me carry it," the setting sun over the Collisseum and "We'll see you again... but not now..."
Perfect.
As Madison said, this film can bring tears to any man.
- This evening I finally watched it completely, and the memory of this film stretches straight from my childhood, when I was very young I saw my father watching it, and more than once. As I watched now, I often imagined how he saw what was happening on the screen, what he thought, how he empathized, what thoughts he had.
- Now I want to watch a courageous film about courage with colorful characters who inspire others, lead to the achievement of ideas, and how sad it is when those people who believed in Maximum and followed him died for him.
- As Madison said, this movie can bring any man to tears. Family is the most precious thing in life, and for me, what happened to the child and wife of the protagonist caused tears and anguish at how cruel people can be.
- There was a great interest in the films of Russell Crowe, a good actor, he is excellent at colorful male roles, and Joaquin Phoenix is certainly good, aesthetically insane character he turned out well.
- In general, I can say that this film will find a place in my heart and I will definitely review it. A good movie plus childish nostalgia, which can make you feel stronger?
If you want to believe in someone, believe in yourself.
What is this film about for me?
This movie is about loss. Losing the closest ones. It is a life of torment after a nightmare, of exhausting trials. On the release... That's what the movie is about.
The fact that family ties do not decide anything. If you love someone or you don't. That's what the movie is about.
Children are sometimes disappointed and remain strangers. That there are strangers "relatives", there are friends, like brothers. There are people that you can’t call non-native, because they are “native”, in spirit, in heart. That's what this movie is about.
God will not help you if you pray for them. It will not help you to survive the loss.
If you want to believe in someone, believe in yourself.
There is a scene where gladiators talk to each other and say, “I’m going to die soon and I’m going to be waiting in heaven for my wife and daughters.” The other responds, “My wife and son are waiting for me.”
I believe and want to believe in life after death, and that man’s thoughts, dreams and plans do not die with his flesh.
And in general, according to the film – Russell Crowe, a beautiful artist, courageous, strong, with sad eyes, just chic in armor and without them. When I look at him in the movies, I always wonder what he is like. Beautiful scenes of gladiator fights, with chariots and wild cats, with distraught people and the emperor! The battle scene at the beginning of the film, with wild people from the woods, axes, heavy swords, blood, fire and arrows. And of course, the fate of the protagonist from the respected and beloved by his subordinates and Caesar to the man who lost his family, became a slave, later a gladiator and still managed to take revenge on his enemy, despite the pathetic attempts of a morally ill person to destroy him, despite the fact that everything was against him! To win the love of the crowd and get “liberation” while remaining a worthy person, as he was all his life! Good music. I also liked the pictures of the memories of the main character about the house, the son who fled on the way to him, about his wife.
And the finale, where the hero finally opens the gates of his home. He hasn't been home in so long...
In the twentieth century, Hollywood’s great directors loved to make films about ancient Rome, often based on biblical subjects. Living classic Ridley Scott released his most decorated film - Gladiator - just at the turn of the century. He will come to the Bible in 14 years.
Maximus brought victory to the Roman Empire in Germany, but was betrayed by the young emperor Commodus. He falls into slavery, where he becomes a gladiator and begins his journey of revenge.
In addition to the Oscars, the Golden Globes and many other awards, Gladiator has another dubious achievement: it still regularly tops the top of the films with the most blunders. And questions are raised both technical and historical sides of the picture.
It is funny that in the film called Gladiator, the fighting scenes are poorly filmed - both military battles and gladiator fights. The contractions are shown by fast torn frames, the camera rushes, it is difficult to understand what is happening.
But what Gladiator has no complaints about is acting. Russell Crowe won his Oscar for good reason. And the young Joaquin Phoenix and 20 years ago amazing played crazy.
Ridley Scott had an epochal movie, but if you think about the logic of the plot, too many questions begin to arise. So to enjoy the already classic tape, it is better not to do this.
Who to watch: - lovers of historical cinema; - if you want to see the thin Russell Crowe.
Who can not see: - connoisseurs of ancient Rome; - animal lovers.
Not even twenty years have passed! I just came across an article where it is mentioned how difficult the film was shot, the script was not clearly spelled out and, most importantly, one of the main actors Oliver Reed died 3 weeks before the end of filming. I didn't know! What a story. What a deep and powerful image. At the very end, the last 2 minutes with him was already filmed using his digital image. And here's another: “Reed was “resurrected” with computer graphics, stunt doubles and a dummy. The scene of the massacre of Proximo is filmed from the back (this is another actor), but the voice belongs to Reed – he repeats the theatrical phrase “Shadows and perishables”. She appeared in the film almost by accident. During the filming of Maximus' entrance to the arena, Proximo shouts after him: "We are just shadows and corruptible!" The camera was then not turned off immediately, and Reed after this scream thoughtfully repeated "Shadows and perishable..." The episode was cut during editing, but after Reed's death, the phrase seemed perfect to the director to say goodbye to both the actor and his hero. A beautiful gesture. Rest in peace. . .
What can you say about one of the best films in history, except that it is the best? Well, except to admire the scope of filming for the year 2000. Or regret that almost for Russell it was, apparently, the peak of his career. Or wish everyone who has not yet seen not to waste time reading reviews and spare space on the disk.
This is not exactly a drama, let alone a historical one. This is rather a fantastic action (outside time and space): since the “metaphysical trinity” about which we are talking and which the authors persistently revealed through the “personalized family of the divine Marcus Aurelius” (and, judging by the vociferous remarks – revealed with passion) serves here as a plot frame, and therefore neither the “Colosseum” (which has already been built), nor Rome (which is not Rome at all), nor the characters themselves – all this is from the field of fiction.
Fantastic, as you know, is a privileged genre and does not lend itself to criticism, because I am sure that those who wish to leave an adequate response faced great difficulties, regardless of their acquaintance with the "allegorical context", which, although they did not hide, is it possible to endow the "royal offspring" together with the "Roman Colosseum" with such stunning meanings: to characterize and explain their movements in the light of such a bold subjective cosmology? For the visual picture, it is obvious that it is possible, but not for categorical syllogisms capable of defining the “conceptual messages” that, judging by some recent films, are already interwoven without any indiscriminateness and embarrassment, with the firm conviction that no “sensible” person will find the right definitions. Thus, the hidden symbolism has ceased to be secret and, moreover, thanks to the cinema, acquires unprecedented forms.
“Rome was once a sacred dream, it was talked about in a whisper,” now it is trumpeted for all to hear, on wide screens and everyone is happy, admired. The allegorical overtones, with the protracted conflict of “congenial offspring,” obviously still haunt many and I would even say not to many, but to all – it has now become so painful that one is sometimes struck by the resourcefulness and wit of some authors in their desperate hope of reaching out to the general public.
How appropriate such mythological analogies are is not known to anyone for certain, therefore, in order to avoid unnecessary confusion, there is no need to analyze the plot intrigue between the "royal offspring of the divine Marcus Aurelius" or the anthropomorphic ideas of the authors about the dual nature of man - a complex of soul and intellect, which, nevertheless, deserves the most careful study, because of a satisfactory ethical justification. In any case, Maximus (Russell Crowe), called to her (intrigue) clarification, corresponds to him. "Gladiator", does not stand on ceremony in the selection of epithets and in order to avoid misunderstanding, cuts the "Gordian knot" on the move. Amazing movie!
I remember this film from childhood. Recently I watched Troy and, inspired, decided to finally look at Gladiator properly. Well, in the end. . .
Gladiator is a really powerful movie. In every way. Large-scale shooting (director Ridley Scott, like no other, master of his craft), camera work, costumes, recreation of the spirit of that time, epic battle scenes and of course excellent acting work. Time after viewing flew by imperceptibly, I was completely immersed in the era of the Greco-Roman Empire, and the heroes could not but empathize. A film that truly deserves an Oscar, there is a place for action and a place for drama.
This is a film about a great war that had no equal. This is a tragic and difficult story of a man who went from a military commander and close to Caesar, to a slave and then an invincible gladiator, who went through inhuman trials, the loss of loved ones, betrayal and who was able to achieve justice and revenge.
I’ve never been a fan of Russell Crowe, but he was very good. His experiences were realistic, especially impressed by the scenes of his fights, it is clear that he seriously approached the role, he fought coolly and in general was in great shape, as the war should be. I really liked Connie Nielsen, a beautiful and talented actress. Well, for a sweet, masterpiece performance by Joaquin Phoenix. His textured appearance has the role of antagonist. Many people think this is the best part of his career. Rather, she is the most iconic, because to star in such an eminent director in a cult film is very lucky.
The film is definitely recommended for viewing to all fans of the genre, as well as fans of Phoenix and Crowe.
10 out of 10
Ridley Scott's film (Blade Runner, Alien, Hannibal) about the brave Roman general Maximus. He was loved by the army, loved by the authorities, but against collusion on a political basis, an ordinary military man is not immune. So the general loses his family, and he becomes a slave, forced to fight in gladiatorial battles for the sake of "bread and circuses" for the Roman people.
The film has an amazing cast.
Russell Crowe won an Oscar for Best Actor.
Throughout the film, you observe the resilience and character of his character. He has lost his family and his position, but he still has a chance to save the Roman Empire and avenge his family. In each frame you believe him, believe in his emotions and marvel at the resilience of his spirit, all actions are verified, without excessive emotionality. Given that I watched Mind Games (2001), I’m pretty sure Russell is on my favorite list.
The second role was played by Joaquin Phoenix, the son of Caesar, who took the throne.
In the first scenes, it seemed to me that Joaquin would not be given much attention here and he would not give out any striking performances, but by the middle of the film, every phrase, every emotion of him makes you tense (" Am I not merciful). It was great to watch him, given that the Joker recently came out and after watching the film you realize that he could have played Arthur even 20 years ago.
Secondary characters are also qualitatively worked out, stunning actors from many gladiators are also remembered for their variety of external parameters and soulfulness, although they are all on the verge of life and death, because every fight can be their last.
For the female part of the film in response to Connie Nielsen in stunning outfits (the film also received an Oscar for costumes). It is impossible to take your eyes off, in addition to beauty, she also shows the character of her character, a fragile girl turns out to be strong and sane.
Lisa Gerrard and Hans Zimmer (Inception, Interstellar, Dark Knight) worked on the soundtrack, so I think there is nothing to say here, Zimmer has everything at the highest level as always.
Also, attention should be paid to special effects and staging of fights, for the effects also gave an Oscar and quite deservedly, special effects incredibly complement the fights, everything seems alive and real (especially the fight scene at the beginning with catapults). Fights are staged very effectively and dynamically sit and breathlessly watch every blow of the sword.
A worthy historical action movie with a strong drama, which can already be considered a classic for good reason.
If you want to watch a historically accurate film about the era of prosperity of the Roman Empire, then Gladiator is not for you. This film is a reinterpretation of the historical era, the author's film, which in its own way interprets the events taking place at that time.
Actor's play. Basically, the names speak for themselves. Russell Crowe, Joaquin Phoenix have long established themselves as top actors. And in this film, they were on top again. No gram of played emotions or insecure actions, only authentic authentic authentic game. Especially well turned out mean, thirsty for power and insecure Emperor Commodus, who caused only negative emotions, which did not cause any compassion and understanding, his own, which should be according to the plan of the director.
Antourage. This is the only part of the film that upset me a bit, because the surroundings are not quite true. I understand that this is a rethink, but even with all this, there must be logic in the plot. For example, I do not understand why gladiators wore helmets on bare heads, and not put on a leather helmet. There were other moments like this, and they catch the eye and make the picture less imbued with the spirit of the time. But still, the entourage was overwhelmingly steep. The coolest thing is that the shooting was conducted in a real location, and the scenery was painted at a minimum. This created a feeling of complete immersion in the current situation.
Sound and camera work. For the year 2000, it was a masterpiece. The music was chosen with care and greatly helped to perceive the picture properly. I also want to note the quality of shooting, which for quite a long time was so superb that even now not every film has such indicators.
Plot. And, of course, the most important and delicious is the story. The whole picture is completely imbued with it, which allows you to make each character meaningful. Everything is so thought out that even some third-rate guard at one moment will face the viewer, the viewer can consider him and understand his motives. I don’t even talk about the main characters, because they are permeated to the bone with plot delights. Their story is very clear: it is sometimes hilarious, sometimes tragic, sometimes intriguing. In principle, the plot is built so that a person experiences almost all known emotions when watching: fear, pity, anger, curiosity, and joy. You can see that Ridley Scott knows how to make movies, because his previous creations, that the film Gladiator are real role models.
You must watch this. Even if you are the kind of person that you do not like action movies (and I am just that), then this movie will still make you sit down, enthusiastically watch what is happening, experiencing a full rainbow of emotions.
For all its entertainment, “Gladiator” can not be interpreted as a historical film about a guy who arranges a solid meat plant at the Colosseum. And the point is not even that the historical events here are not accurately displayed, from which real gladiators and Roman senators would laugh at Ridley Scott, as on George Carlin's stand-up. Personally, I find in this film a shade of political drama that unfolds between the two camps. The first is led by a madman and despot Commodus. The key figure of the second camp is Maximus, a gladiator who was once the best general of the Roman Empire, who became a candidate for president of Ukraine in the future. Sorry, but the famous scene where the hero of Russell Crowe touches wheat, for some reason I am reminded of these thoughts.
Jokes are jokes, but the pros of staging should not be discounted. Although this film was dubbed the most clumsy due to the huge number of blunders (gaps came across at various levels, up to the most primitive, when a member of the film crew in modern jeans fell into the frame), the scale of the picture is amazing. To cover the entire crowd of viewers of gladiatorial duels, the shown movie Colosseum is twice the size of the real one. When the camera covers a large frame, especially in the initial battle scene, all movements are visible. The operator plays about the light, darkening the picture to the desired setting. The musical accompaniment is good, the costumers tried their best.
Despite the fact that I do not have much sympathy for Russell Crowe, his Maximus combines the features that form the interest of the viewer - experienced, thoughtful, motivated. He is loyal to his empire, but at the same time dreams of a simple life, which is evident from the dialogue between him and the emperor Marcus Aurelius. After the death of the emperor, power passes to his son Commodus, but Maximus refuses to swear to him, and he orders the murder of his wife and son. Demoralized Maximus falls into slavery, where his master Proximo puts him on gladiatorial fights, giving one interesting idea - all the spectators of the fights are in the mode "show must go on" and the favorite of the crowd has its own bit of power.
This detail takes the confrontation between Maximus and Emperor Commodus to a new level. The new emperor does not nourish the love of the people, and intrigues are weaved in the Senate. At the same time, Maximus arrives in Rome for battle, and the dark side of Commodus manifests itself. From a cowardly, complex boy in the body of a man, he becomes a real usurper, ready to kill relatives and persuade his sister to incest. At the same time, the character is aware of his defectiveness and inability to live in honor, like Maximus, which makes him more unpleasant. A significant contribution to the development of the character was made by the actor Joaquin Phoenix, whose name is unfairly considered little-known.
Definitely "Gladiator" does not claim to be a classic, like "Spartacus" or "Ben-Hur." But for its level, namely the ancient epic, the film shows itself as a good representative of the genre. In any case, Ridley Scott has shown that he can spend $ 100 million usefully.
