She comes from a wealthy family, he works at a sawmill for 40 cents an hour. But he won her love. However, the summer romance ended with Ellie moving. Noah stayed. After World War II, he begins repairing the abandoned house where they fell in love for the first time. And she marries a rich and attractive guy who lay in her hospital during the war.
The romantic story with Ryan Gosling was mentioned more than once in conversations about cinema, so after the next advice I decided to watch the film “The Memory Diary”. As often as it is discussed that this film is good, they talk about the unhealthy relationship of the two main characters. Even if I agree with this position only partially, it is impossible not to mention the very controversial plot moves associated with separation due to the fact that “my mother does not like you”, with “I love you, but I love him” and of course with betrayal, which becomes the key to a new and now certainly good relationship.
I don’t doubt that everyone has different moral guidelines, but the presence of this combo romanticized idiocy spoils my impression of the characters and does not allow me to somehow believe in all these vivid feelings that do not want to fade until old age.
Logic tells me it doesn't happen, and even if it did, it's not that nice for this couple. However, despite this, my heart is quite sensitive. That’s why I felt the full touch of The Memory Diary. Very bright feelings, love, everything with a good game and so sincere, so vivid. . .
Visually, this film is quite beautiful, but does not stand out much, there is no bright originality in it here. Music is also quite common for such films.
Perhaps the only reason for the popularity of The Memory Diary is a good pair of actors - Gosling and McAdams.

The film is definitely not for everyone, especially not for a younger audience. The plot takes place in a nursing home and is based on memories of the past. The physical and mental problems of the elderly are portrayed reliably, which is why it is so hard to look at. Grandpa spends the last days of his life with his wife, but they seem to be strangers to each other because she does not recognize him anymore. This is a touching story that, perhaps, will not leave anyone indifferent. Especially if you have a relative with dementia. Although in our reality it is doubly difficult, because the care of him lies entirely on the shoulders of loved ones, and in the West the elderly are cared for by staff of nursing homes.
In parallel, they show the past, the heroes of how they met, how their relationship developed. This story turned out to be clichéd and I did not personally hook.
Feelings after watching are twofold: on the one hand, the idea that it is important to spend old age with a loved one, and on the other - about the transience of such happiness.
There are not enough words to describe how much I liked this movie.
The acting in this film is just at its best, conveying emotions, movements and even ordinary facial expressions. The tandem of Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams did their job simply delightful and the characters of the secondary roles, in my opinion, are also very well selected.
Also, one of the key things about this film was that Lon Hammond Jr. is not a negative character. It surprised me and pleased me at the same time. Usually people like Lon give ultimatums to their brides and even blackmail them. But fortunately, this character loved Ellie so much that he let her go. In my opinion, Lon Hammond deserves respect in this regard.
If we talk about the love shown in this film, it is quite ordinary, many probably loved the way Noah loved Ellie. But the admiration is caused by how this love is presented to the viewer, how the main characters fight for it.
To sum up, above all, I wish everyone such love.

Diary of Memory is one of those films that leaves an unforgettable impression and for a long time think about its meaning and depth of feelings. Director Nick Cassavetes was able to create a work that deals with the most important and difficult aspects of love and life in general.
The film showcases the love story of Noah Calhoun and Ellie Hamilton, two young men from different social environments whose passion transcends societal norms and expectations. The plot develops in two time planes: in the present, where the aging Noah and Ellis live their daily lives in a nursing home, and in the past, where we see how their love began and developed.
Actors
Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams fit perfectly into their roles, conveying not only a beautiful love story, but also real emotions facing the challenges of time and circumstance. Their play gives the impression that you live all these moments with the heroes.
Opinion
When I first saw this film, I was struck by its ability to convey something deeper than just a love story. It gives an opportunity to look at life through the prism of the unique relationships of the main characters, where every moment is filled with emotions and meaning. Also, the film’s ability to transport into a world where passion, determination and dedication are intertwined with the real challenges the characters face. Although the love story of Noah and Ellis takes place in the past, its influence extends into the present, affecting their lives.
Result
Diary of Memory is a film that makes you think about the value of the moment, how important it is to preserve and value your relationship. It awakens a sense of nostalgia in us and emphasizes that even in the most difficult situations, love can remain eternal and infinite in memory.

Good day!!! I also decided to write about a film about which a huge number of reviews / reviews have already been written, but I, as you understand, can not pass by, especially since I like this picture very much.
I don't know if there's a more moving movie about love. This story is one of the most tender and unreal. Of course, this is not a masterpiece, but in all respects the film is very high-quality and you will definitely want to review it. There are many good movies, but this is the kind of love I have never seen before. There's just too much... too much warmth, romance, tenderness and incredible awe. I am absolutely right about those who think this movie is a bad one. But it's not a minus. I also want to look at fabulous love. This is most likely a picture for women and men romantics, which remains less and less.
Very beautiful picture turned out, visually the film is very elegant and colorful. Nice to see. And it is very nice that there is no vulgarity, everything is very chaste. In general, the film is wonderful, for romantic mood and pleasure. For those who have not seen it, I recommend it.
This is a very beautiful and unreal love drama-melodrama.
The cast is amazing! In general, there are no questions about casting at all, everything is in its place.
Of course, everyone knows what this film is about, but still, in a nutshell, I want to tell you. The story is told by an elderly man who comes to a nursing home every day and reads the diary of an elderly woman. It tells about the love of young people from different backgrounds. It just so happened that they had to break up. And what exactly prevented them from loving each other and how it ended, I will not tell, it is better to see the film with your own eyes. I wish everyone a great mood and happiness! Thank you very much.
I decided to watch this movie after reading articles about its overrated. For many years, it was considered a standard of romance, but recently psychological debriefings of films have become popular, where the main characters do not appear in the best light. Noah and Ellie's relationship is now considered toxic and romance far-fetched.
Perhaps a cruel joke with the film was played by its advertising at the stage of promotion. The film was positioned as the most romantic, and perhaps someone was disappointed because of the deceived expectations. Let’s try to understand what can be liked in this film, and what is bitterly frustrating. The review contains spoilers.
The obvious disadvantages of melodrama:
- You believe heroes, but not completely. Despite all the passionate kisses and jumps, the chemistry between the characters doesn’t feel the way it would have been. The film begins with the fact that young Ellie and Noah have strong feelings, they both experience first love, passion, constantly argue, reconcile, hug and kiss. But their summer romance ends and Ellie is forced to go to school. Their separation is tragic, both saddened and convinced that there is love between them.
- The saddest thing is that there were no attempts by Noah or Ellie to reunite. Noah trained in the epistolary genre and set up a bunch of letters, although he should have made some money from his sawmill, lift his ass and drive to Ellie. Ellie, with her money and connections, could also come to her beloved in another city, or at least make inquiries through mutual friends. As a result, it seems that Ellie's feelings are not serious. And Noah seems too fixated on his writing and construction. Like Forrest Gump in love.
- Super-good and understanding "rivals." That moment frankly pissed off. After a while, Ellie and Noah find new soul mates. They didn't make cardboard jealous antagonists, and that's a plus of the movie, but why make them so soft? The soldier, whom Ellie agreed to marry after learning that she had gone to Noah’s weekend with all the ensuing, suddenly says: “I am happy when you are happy, dear, listen to your heart and run to your love.” And in the place of Noah’s girlfriend, when you meet your boyfriend’s ex-passion, you definitely won’t cry out – “Oh my God, what a miracle, she’s beautiful!” At least they could have blown their lips.
But it's not that bad in the movie. There are some positive things I want to emphasize.
- The film is likely to appeal to fans of Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling. They wear retro clothes and both look organic. Although on the outside, I thought Ellie was more suitable for the soldier she was treating.
- The scene with the old men: the forbidden reception that struck me into a stingy tear. Writers, why are you so?
- The film is not boring and, despite the criticism, not so succinctly romantic. Yeah, there's a couple of stamps, swan boating and kissing in the rain. And Noah's courtship now looks annoying and naive, but you should take into account the time when events occurred - before it was not so worn out and perceived as something like romantic feats. In general, you can watch the film, so I put it to him:

I don't really like love dramas, but this movie is a huge exception. I would recommend it to everyone.
Incredible acting... Even the strange manner of Gosling here is revealed differently, and Rachel McAdams does not even want to say something, she is amazing!
Starting from the very first scene of the film, where an elderly man begins to read a book with a story of great love, a lot can be understood, but this does not prevent you from watching the film to the end.
Few people in our time can be surprised by a plot that shows strong feelings in people with different statuses in society, but the director of this film managed this story of Noah and Ellie differently, most sensual, in some moments painful, but so beautiful, even fabulous.
The uniqueness of the film is revealed not in the plot, but in how the viewer is told about what is happening. It feels as if you are a direct participant in the picture taking place on the screen. You feel every emotion of the main characters, live it with them. A significant role is played by musical accompaniment, clothing. It takes us somewhere in the past.
This movie just needs to be seen. It reveals serious themes: how much each of us has to go through in life, the problem of choice, the awareness of our true desires, the misunderstanding of parents.
This film was a huge discovery for me in the genre of love drama. Comfortable, touching, vital and truthful.
I think a quote from a well-known writer can be very suitable here:
Separation will teach you to truly love.
(Antoine de Saint-Exupery).
I hope that my review will encourage you to view this, I am not afraid to say, masterpiece. Love, be loved and take risks!

Some kind of indistinct analogue of the Korean "Memorable moment" (aka "I do not want to forget"), shot by a strange coincidence in the same year. Korean is better.
Love is so merciless, but such a beautiful thing.
I really enjoyed this movie and highly recommend it to anyone who loves real love dramas.
To describe The Notebook briefly, it is Titanic long-distance and crash-free: no action, only characters, only feelings!
The acting game is at the highest level. God, what a good cast and how good they play! Even Gosling with his "silent" manner of play here in the subject. And Rachel McAdams is not even necessary to talk - she is just great!
The way the author reveals the topic of “impossible love”, the love of people of different social statuses, is beyond praise. You believe every second of the film, even though everything that happens in the modern sense of life is absolutely savagery. This is the main magic of cinema: to show events so that the viewer could believe and try on the realities of the past. And the creators did it one hundred percent.
Speaking about this film, it is impossible not to note its absolute universality. It will suit both young romantics, only dreaming of love relationships, and people who have seen life, behind whom there is an incredibly large baggage of both happy and tragic memories.
The film shows how to live. How you can and should fight for your happiness, and how this fight is encouraged.
I wrote you 365 letters... I wrote every day for a whole year!
For me, Nick Cassavetes has always been associated more with crime films, both as an actor and as a director. But this film showed that Nick is very cool to put melodramas that turn into dramas, where feelings are shown to be real and sincere.
This is a very touching story conquers from the first frame, when the Old Man begins to read the main story of this film to an elderly woman, then much immediately becomes clear, but this does not prevent you from enjoying the romance and strong depth of this film.
The story about the relationship of a guy and a girl from different social strata is certainly not new, but Cassavetis managed to show the story of Noah and Ellie very beautiful, sincere, with great passions and of course with a very difficult ending, after which you feel a great loss.
I really liked how they met. How brave Noah was, how he reached for her, how he did not give up and pursued her. A simple hard worker made every effort to get the one that seems to be completely out of his world, but with an open heart and a big soul. And the scene on the rides was funny and at the same time very touching.
And the scene in the rain I consider just a standard of romance and true love. It was just amazing.
For me, Diary of Memory is an example of real, sincere and very sensitive love, with a very heartbreaking ending, at first you do not realize it, but then you are shocked at what you are shown, because happiness and tragedy are somewhere near, a great balance of real and devoted love.
Ryan Gosling, I rarely watch movies with his participation, but in the role of Noah he conquered. He is a real romantic who loved openly and forever, on his face everything is written how he relates to Ellie, if sad, then he simply has no face, if happiness, then he shines. I like the fact that his hero is an ordinary hard worker, in whose life almost nothing happens. An ordinary, loving guy who once lost his head to Ellie and his life went a completely different scenario. Collaborating with Rachel McAdams was very romantic, sincere and real.
Rachel McAdams, Rachel knew before this film, and its possibilities, after the film, of course, emotions left very great, since her character, in addition to beauty, is very impressive with her feelings for Noah, and they quarreled, but every time I saw something of my own and family that I want to reach for, in which I want to immerse myself. Ellie attracted her first appearance and is not forgotten until the final.
Diary of Memory is a very sincere, touching, tragic and heartbreaking story about real feelings, real love, which looks very easy and very quickly penetrates into you, you feel it, find something of your own and wish that Noah and Ellie were always together. They're worth it. But our desires and ideas of the author are different.
The picture is very reminiscent of a fairy tale, but the director did everything so that the viewer did not understand until the very end that the story, in fact, will end as such a story should end. But, indeed, it is such films with a beautiful love story that usually end tragically.
We often think that there is no love for life, but how much we are wrong. The painting “Diary of Memory” is direct proof to the contrary. It has everything: bitter events that torment the soul and the happiest unforgettable emotions.
Here, indeed, very deep topics are touched upon: love, memories and memory in general, the social significance of a person in society, loyalty. At its core, Diary of Memory meets all the standards of melodrama and I love that because I love movies like that. There are many similar films, but it struck the hearts of millions of people, and it is absolutely justified.
And yes, the uniqueness of it adds to the narrative. It’s like listening to an old grandmother who, with tears and soul, shares her love very sincerely. Plus, the entourage adds the style of clothing of the heroes, scenery, music - all this immerses in the atmosphere of those years.
The film should be watched at least because it is very warm, memorable, impressive. And the bottom line is that each person in one way or another will think about how much he has to go before achieving his true desires. Lose, sacrifice, but the main thing is to love.
And, perhaps, separately note the amazing Rachel McAdams, who ideally went on the role of the main character (incredible beauty). And when Ryan came back from the war, I saw in him a real grown man who had changed and become more serious.
If you want to make a touching romantic evening, then this film is 100% perfect!

“They argued endlessly and rarely agreed. And always fighting... They tortured each other every day. But they had one thing in common: they were crazy about each other.
Sometimes we think that love for life does not exist. But we're wrong. Diary of Memory is a film that proves otherwise. This film shows us love from all sides - from heartbreaking grief to the best experiences of happiness.
The film is based on the plot of the eponymous biographical novel by Nicholas Sparks, published in 1996 and became a bestseller in the first week of sales.
This film touches on serious topics: the theme of love, loyalty, theme of memory, mutual understanding and the importance of a person’s social position in society.
“Diary of Memory” is a melodrama, I like such films. It made such a good impression on me that I have watched it several times and am ready to see more. This film allowed me to feel everything that the main characters experienced.
For me, this movie is like a story told by my grandmother. I believe that this perception is influenced by the time shown in the film, its vibe: clothes, music, the correct contrast of shades in the image.
I recommend watching all those who like a romantic, warm, but at the same time a little sad movie.
This film shows that the paths of life are not always smooth, and if you want to achieve a goal, you have to go through a lot, sacrifice a lot, be it time, feelings or money.
I didn’t watch this movie when all the girls around me got stuck, turned it on, many years later, and I think it was the right decision.
For me, this picture is not about love and relationships, no, of course, the whole film is built on this, but for me this story is about nostalgia, maybe because it responded to me, but still, I think that was the main idea of the director.
This is not a movie for teenagers like “Twilight”, this is a story about memories of love, feelings, how we relive the very first: heavy and beautiful emotions caused by a trembling feeling – love.
This film should be watched as if looking back, perhaps you will recognize yourself there, perhaps not, but the spirit of this youth you will definitely feel.
I will not say that the picture is sad, at all, for me it is very warm, and if there are notes of sadness, then only kind and bright.
Also, perception is influenced by image quality, stylistics, time of action, in which the plot develops, all this refers to the past. We like to look at old photos, remember the past, with the preservation in the soul of those feelings that after a while we remember differently, someone from a positive point of view, someone from a negative one, but the plot takes us back to the moment where we can get as close as possible to that time and feel the whole range of emotions.
An old man in a home for the elderly reads a woman suffering from Alzheimer’s disease the love story of young people, by the will of fate divided by social status.
The problem is that the attention of the forgetful listener must be closely maintained, otherwise the thread of the narrative is easily lost. The narrator does this well, but the idea creeps in that the story is covered by him not for the first time. Is that true? If so, for what purpose does he so scrupulously construct his story, deftly maneuvering the precious time bestowed on a single day? Intriguing questions, aren’t they? .
It is worth noting that this picture has a very cult melodramatic status, having acquired for incomplete 20 years since the release of a lot of fans around the world.
The story told in the film, really extremely touches the soul and heart, leaving a pleasant bittersweet aftertaste after another viewing. First of all, it is worth noting the book on which the script of the film is based and, of course, literally the entire cast, very accurately and talentedly coped with the task assigned to it.
Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams will long be remembered for their searing, voluptuous chemistry, perfectly revealing the dreams of many about the lively and endless love of two halves of one whole. And the supporting actors, which include James Garner and Gina Rowlands, as well as Sam Shepard, Joan Allen, David Thornton and James Marsden, amazingly complemented the love story of the main characters with their characters.
And how do you want to find your man in reality, to whom you will be ready to give your love without asking for anything in return. And he will feel the same way about you.
We are all worthy of love! And if you believe in love, you will surely meet the one in whom it will be embodied!
Over the past year, I’ve grown to love movies. If they do not please the original plot and idea, then they can set a certain mood, or mood for deeds. But, unfortunately, in the case of this film, everything is a little different.
I've never seen something so banal and fake. Each frame in the film evokes a sense of déjà vu, from beginning to end stamped to death, which was seen by every person, at least once watched films about love.
He's just a hard worker, she's from a rich family. Even this technique is used everywhere.
The characters of the film are absolutely cardboard, and their friends are not characters, but just an excuse to meet. Everything looks stupid, starting, in fact, with the acquaintance of the main characters.
Disclosure is very shallow, short - he's poor, she's rich, that's what we're given to understand clearly, no more. Even conflicts in the families of the main characters do not go beyond the quarrel, lasting a few minutes of screen time.
The script is half empty. A lot of screen time is occupied by different kisses, the squeal of the main character (my ears hurt from him, help: ), and other moments of fun. This is especially noticeable in the first part of the film.
The dialogue in the movie is terrible. Terribly short, you won’t see long dialogues revealing characters, their story or anything like that. All dialogues have the following meaning: I love you. That's it.
In this film, absolutely everything serves as an excuse for the love of the main characters.
Yes, and to confess, the very love in the film looks terribly harrowing.
This is the most incredibly stupid moment where the hero calmly risks his life on the damn wheel, a couple of minutes of screen time, and now our couple is having fun in the summer, eating ice cream and kissing. What's that? Where's the movie going? Wouldn’t it be better if they showed a love story, the path from friendship to recognition, from recognition to true love?
And it is because of such moments that you will not experience any emotions at all.
Approximately the first third of the film keeps the viewer secret from the fact that an elderly woman and a man are the main characters of the film in old age. This divides the film into two parts, which not only do not paint the narrative, but also interfere with delving into the essence of the picture, spoiling the impression of viewing. How can you alternate between some old people, and a nice couple of young people? In this film, this is done according to the formula 50/50 - half of the story is devoted to dialogue between a couple in old age, the other - to the story of the same couple in his youth. This is absolutely ridiculous.
It would have been better if this technique had been used in a different proportion, inserting a scene with the elderly at the end of the film, something similar was done in the movie Fall in Love with Me If You Dare. There was a lot of emotion there.
Everything in this movie is painfully sweet. You can get diabetes from watching this movie. And all this sweetness of the film is intertwined with the fact that everything you see on the screen is painfully familiar to you:
He's poor, she's rich, incredible love, separation, parents against him, he writes letters, and every day! Do I feel like I’ve seen it somewhere before?
Bottom line: Actors are far from the best. The concept is horribly banal, beaten. The picture is not bad views.
I don’t know how this movie is in the top 100. It's like watching a terrible love version of the movie Remember.
Only for pictures and beautiful views.

The world of cinema knows a lot of love stories, which are woven events of heartbreaking choice, and the more true the story, the more it looks gallant on the screen. Diary of Memory is Gosling’s first film, which showed him not as an ordinary boy, but as a hero-lover, building a place for his beloved woman. All housewives sigh about this, and avid materialists try to deceive their essence, seeing themselves in the image of the main character, choosing the pure love of youth.
The narration of the film is divided into a large period of time, starting with the 30s of the twentieth century, which are shown so frivolously that it could be the 50s and 60s, and judging by the play of the actress and morals, so in general the 2000s. The director doesn’t really care, and he concentrates solely on the story of the two main characters, writing scenes according to the melodramatic canon (no wonder why the book has become so popular in the US). It would be possible to get used to this, if not for the complete absence of plot developments, revealing characters not so flatly, as shown in the film. Moreover, contrary to expectations, the film makes you sympathize sincerely with a secondary character who had no less heart than the main character, but by the will of an evil fate or a femme fatale became a cuckold, while preserving honor and dignity to the end.
Sincerely imbued with the plausibility of events is not possible – this show, cutting the eye is good only on one hand – the stability of the picture in the amount of $ 29 million.
Films based on the novels of Nicholas Sparks are distinguished by some of their features, as a rule, cover a long period of time, connected by a love line, which time tests for strength. “Diary of Memory” is one of the best adaptations of this writer and deservedly enters the TOP 250. It's a movie about true love! I highly recommend it!
There have been a lot of films based on novels by writer Nicholas Sparks, most of which I have watched because I myself am a fan of romantic dramas and certainly Diary of Memory is one of the best films ever made based on a Nicholas Sparks novel.
One of the great advantages of the film is the selection of actors for the main roles, namely young (and the film was released in 2004) Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams. I can safely say that the on-screen duet of Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling is one of the most beautiful, empathetic and sincere duets I have ever seen in romantic films. Their characters Ellie (Rachel McAdams) and Noah (Ryan Gosling) are filled with vitality, positivity, feelings of great love and sincere emotions. They fell in love during the summer season, they had a wonderful time together, but great love always has its obstacles and there are always those who are able and willing to separate them. In this case, it was Ellie’s parents who believed that Noah’s social status was not worthy of Ellie, they believed that Ellie needed someone who would be able to provide for her.
There is also one unique feature in the film - the story is currently being told by an elderly man who told this story to an elderly lady, later we found out who they really were.
The film is very beautiful landscapes, very beautiful places where the main characters visited, very colorful scenery, all this is combined with beautiful music.
“Diary of Memory” is a film about real eternal love, namely eternal love, which was destined at the beginning of the journey to first part, but then meet again, a film about hope and faith in the brightest and sincere.
Despite the fact that the action unfolds slowly and gradually, and the script is a classic drama (blood, love, carrots), the film attracts attention. Director and camera work at the level of "Green Mile", "Escape from Shaw-Shank". The case when all the classic templates of cinema are executed perfectly with a plus.
I’ve wanted to see this great movie for a long time, but I still couldn’t get my hands on it. And today they finally came to see this brilliant film. What can I say? This is a classic and there is nothing more to say. Movies for all time!
The acting in the film is flawless. All the actors play perfectly, and the main character did his best: after all, he was given an Oscar for this role! True, it seemed to me that the main character is a little overplaying, but in general this does not spoil the film, and we do not judge at all!
The director also did a good job. The film has a lot of interesting dialogue and the music is amazing. I liked the fact that the film was a bit gray. It helps us understand the mood and experience everything with the actors. I would also like to mention the dress of the heroine: this is my favorite color!
Operating work is beyond praise. Many beautiful trees and fields will force you to enjoy your eyes. It also showed a very beautiful house. Thank you so much for filming in the rain! Thank you very much, operator, for not being afraid to catch a cold!
I would especially like to mention the scenario. Writer, you've made up a story that will make anyone cry if they're not a robot! It's just amazing... I will definitely watch your movie more than once to relive it again. I'm not a robot, though.
I also want to thank the producers. You're so good at buying a movie from a director! Now, thanks to you, we can all enjoy it, and the director with your money can make something else as great, so that we too can watch and enjoy it.
But what is this movie about, some will ask? And the answer to that question is simple: it's about everything! It's about people, about love, about loneliness, about growing up. What else can I say? This is a real movie, brilliant and unique. It should be seen, not described.
In conclusion, I would like to say that if you like live stories about life, then my advice to you is to watch this movie! I guarantee you won’t be disappointed! My grade won't surprise you. Honestly earned from me:
10 out of 10
Although, if possible, 11 out of 10 and even 12 out of 10. Because it's a genius classic! Once again, thank you to everyone who made it, from the director to those who slap it. Yes, their participation is small, but they also touched the masterpiece.
Thank you for reading my review! I hope she encourages you to watch... Also, I hope you get some aesthetic pleasure from reading it and say thank you. Believe me, I will keep your words in my heart. Thank you for your attention!!
Nicholas Sparks doesn't have much writing talent, he's more of a psychologist, he knows what women need, he knows what to push to sell. And this novel, story, novel, call it what you want, was so successful that not only the book sold a huge circulation, but the film became mega popular. This is one of his most successful works, which I am happy to review and re-read in different languages.
The film achieved enormous popularity not only because it tells the romantic story of two lovers who were able to carry their feelings through the years and achieve what they wanted. But also at the expense of popular, beautiful, young actors - Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams. They look so wonderful together that they seem to be a great couple in life. What a pity that this illusion at one time collapsed and the guys fled.
The plot itself is not exciting, there is nothing special and shocking in it or just causing some strong emotions. He is calm, quietly flows down the river of memories, strongly not touching the notes of the soul. Then why such an interest in the picture? - You ask. The thing is, Sparks captures a female audience with details. Women like to think, women like to hover in the clouds and imagine beautiful princes. Noah is exactly the prince. Pay attention to the details, see how he cares for his beloved. Any woman would want to be in the place of the main character, for the sake of albeit small, but incredibly pleasant moments.
A worthy film that combines all the best – a great cast, a romantic plot, a little drama and a good ending. This film will give you an unforgettable experience while watching.
“The Memory Diary” is already considered a classic of the romantic genre, almost at the level of “Bodyguard” with Kevin Costner and Whitney Houston. At least that’s the impression I got after the same kind of stream of positive reviews and enthusiastic sighs about this film. The film is based on Nicholas Sparks’ best-selling book, which means it has to live up to my expectations. For the most part, this author has very, very touching love stories. But in the case of his most famous work, The Diary of Memory, something went wrong. And from the very first frame.
The plot takes place in South Carolina shortly before the outbreak of World War II. Low-income guy Noah falls in love with a well-to-do girl Ellie and in every possible way tries to attract her attention and achieve reciprocity. Classic genre, the most beaten plot in cinema. But it can also be deployed in very different ways. Their love story made no impression on me. Absolutely emotionless Noah in the performance of my unloved Ryan Gosling caused me exclusively irritation - it was impossible to fall in love with him. He's not alive at all. There is no charisma, no special intellect, no fantasy in the development of relationships - nothing, and his appearance is an amateur. Ellie played by Rachel McCadams is a typical fool, and therefore does not cause any positive emotions. The development of their relationship was frankly boring to watch.
Quite different emotions were evoked by the parallel line of the film, where my grandfather, who lives in a nursing home, meets his grandmother, who suffers from memory loss, every day. His love for her evokes incredible emotions. Day by day, he tries to make her like her again, takes care of her and reads her favorite book. Every day they experience the first encounter and the emergence of feelings for each other and every evening she hurts him, forgetting and kicking him out of his room like a stranger. That part of the story is great, and that’s where I got a 7. The ending was absolutely amazing, I didn’t expect the movie to bring me to tears. I recommend you to look at it, despite the disadvantages at the beginning of the review.
Have you ever eaten too-sweet cakes or cakes that have 10 times more cream than biscuit? That's the kind of association that this film brought me. Too much sugar on top, too much tasteless cream inside.
The film itself caused me strong emotions, but I would not call them positive. During the viewing, irritation grew from everything that was happening on the screen.
There is a hackneyed plot about the love of people from different walks of life, regular replays by Rachel McAdams (it seems that either she or the director himself did not understand this role), primitive dialogue.
There is no sense of proportion in this film. If you crush tears, then in all possible ways; if you portray happiness and love, then make a clown out of the circus; if you need to show love, then show maximum frankness right on the floor.
There are a lot of actions here, but they all carry a minimal semantic load, many important details are omitted, the viewer must accept some things as fact. The dialogue between the young characters in the film is only so that they do not look like fish (Gosling has nothing to play here). The moral of the film is also questionable, because the mistakes of youth here are corrected at the expense of the happiness of another person.
In fact, we have a qualitatively filmed but stupid story with the most template characters, with dozens of rude attempts to squeeze out tears. The basis of the melodrama is an interesting story, live characters and the relationship between them. In this film, I saw only a clichéd sham of all this.
6 out of 10
I am not a melodrama connoisseur, so I got to this movie only now. Having felt my “lyrical” mood, I was ready for another “vanilla” love story with a banal plot: two accidentally meet each other (for the completeness of the picture they must have different social layers and / or psychotypes), at first everything is perfect, but some tragedy happens and they part, and after some time they realize that all their lives loved only each other and Happy End.
But this movie was much broader. More like a real love story. With ridiculous scenes, quarrels and detractors, albeit in a lightweight form. And this, perhaps, is a message from the authors to the viewer that even with an ideal combination of two people - two "halves" there are quarrels, misunderstandings, and you need to work on this: correct, forgive, and somewhere and just "close your eyes" - all this is love.
The film raises many other themes: social inequality, the love of father and son, faith and hope for a miracle and much more.
After the film left a beautiful aftertaste, and some moments made you think.
For all those who know how to feel – be sure to watch!
Noah is a simple guy from a provincial town who grew up in a very poor family and works in a sawmill. Ellie is a girl from an aristocratic family whose parents represent the most common approach to life for people of high society: people in the lower class can not deserve any of their precious time, attention is awarded only to equals or those who are higher. At the same time, this policy of relatives did not have any bad influence on Ellie, the girl is quite well educated, familiar with good manners and does not behave like an arrogant bitch, arrogantly condemning all those who were not lucky enough to be born in a rich house. However, the difference in social strata is obvious, so it simply will not.
Ellie and Noah meet in the park with rides, where he falls hopelessly in love with her and immediately invites her on a date. As time passes and we see a fully formed couple, Ellie reciprocates with Noah. But if Noah's father is clearly delighted with his son's girlfriend, then Ellie's parents are fundamentally against such an alliance. The scene of Noah’s acquaintance with Ellie’s parents at dinner perfectly demonstrates the attitude of high-seated majors to representatives of the lower classes. Ellie is young and ambitious, everything is burning with fire inside her, she does not share the opinion of her parents about Noah, and therefore she constantly fights with them, defending her choice. But the trouble is that Noah once heard such a quarrel and came to the conclusion that none of these relationships will work.
But love is a pungent thing, you can’t just get rid of such feelings, so the next day Noah moved to his beloved, where he found that Ellie’s family had gone over. Finding only an empty house in place, Noah begins to write a wild number of letters in which he admits that he was wrong and wants to be only with her, that he is ready to come anywhere, even to the ends of the world. These letters by themselves fell into the hands of not Ellie, but her snobbish mother, who simply hid all this romantic writing far away, so that all these stupid thoughts to build a relationship with a villager did not return to her beloved daughter. Noah eventually wrote the last letter, and then there was war.
After the war, Noah returned to his town and set about restoring the house where he dreamed of living with Ellie and even promised her that it would be so. After completing the house, he puts it up for sale through an ad in the newspaper. What about Ellie? During the war, Ellie worked in a hospital and met a wounded pilot. The guy was very nice and interesting, so after the war they started dating, and then he proposed to her. My parents are excited, they say it’s a good game. Well, Ellie agrees, and that the sin to hide, everything is right, the pilot proved to be quite a worthy representative of the military profession and the male half of humanity as a whole.
But after seeing an ad in the newspaper about the sale of the very house next to which Noah stands as if nothing had happened, Ellie rushes to him to decide before the wedding what she really needs. And then everything follows the protocol: a friendly dinner, a romantic walk, unplanned sex and a conversation in high tones, which should clarify what is really between them. And if Noah explicitly says that he wants to be with her, then Ellie is a little confused, because she is already on the cusp of family life with a very decent guy pilot. And it is not her fault that life has so cruelly dispelled them that she did not receive his letters, that the advert appeared in the newspaper only now, and not half a year earlier. And she has to make a decision: follow the call of the heart or conscience?
The film is based on the novel of the same name by Nicholas Sparks, which became a bestseller in the first week of sales. The story of all-consuming love carried through the years has been read by millions of people, and cinema is one of the most highly regarded representatives of its genre. The production is made at a very decent level, the atmosphere of those times is recreated convincingly, starting from the town itself, where the main events take place, and ending with cars, clothes and smaller details.
It was very important to find the main performers. In order for the viewer to really worry about the main characters, it is simply necessary that the actors themselves believe that they are playing. They don’t have to play their characters, but live their lives. The slightest playfulness, and the case will smell of falsehood, and a wise viewer with experience senses such a mile away. So who was invited?
The film was released in 2004, but it has been in development since 1995. And then Tom Cruise was going to play Noah, and I honestly don't know what would have come out of it, because I feel differently about Cruz. Perhaps in the distant 95th he would have been a good fit for this role, just remember the film “Distant Country”. But in 2004, Tom was a bit old for the role, just my opinion. Justin Timberlake was also scheduled to play the role, and it’s unclear. As an actor, Timberlake may well play on a level, his role in Alpha Dog is posh, but Noah’s character and Mr. N’Sync don’t mix well in my head. They eventually chose Ryan Gosling. A very bright actor who can convey a whole range of emotions with his eyes alone. Noah in his performance looks very convincing, and his character is really empathetic.
The role of Ellie went to Rachel McAdams. A cheerful girl from a successful family, who did not know in life any difficulties and obstacles, under the heavy pressure of her fate changes right before her eyes. First love inspires, but parting can drive into a very deep hole. Not broken. Then the war, where she too did not sit behind the back of influential ancestors. In the post-war years, we see a woman, though young, but already quite capable of making her own decisions. McAdams was quite able to play out these changes and experiences of his heroine.
What's the result? It is immediately obvious that the film was made on the basis of a good literary source, that the story was not sucked out of a finger, but was written by the author with a full understanding of the matter. What is interesting, watching this film makes sense not only for the fair half and terribly romantic guys, because this movie is not just an attraction, but a full-fledged demonstration that perfect love exists on our planet, maybe once every hundred years, maybe not in your case, but it happens. We look at them and hope to try this on ourselves. Good movie.
I didn’t get into it, and I was surprised to find that there are sometimes comparisons to Titanic, which is a tangle of human and social problems and is, in my opinion, in an obviously different weight category. Here the range of problems is much narrowed, and in the center - a solid love. Is it love? Probably, it is - but specifically revealed by the script and not played smoothly and well everywhere.
Ellie is a glamorous rich girl with a kind, naive soul, striking Noah with an unrestrained unnatural laugh with her head thrown back. Several times throughout the film, she scares away with her grins and dazzling smiles in suitable and not very good situations. In some scenes, the gloss comes down and you start to believe it - but not everywhere. Noah looks more affectionate overall - maybe because of the light-colored look with the cap he looks at Ellie from start to finish. And also because it seems less impulsive and more stable. He, like Gatsby, builds his house and sits on the porch - to indulge in sorrow and vaguely hope that his beloved will one day return to the paradise he created. But in the behavior of both heroes, something is not written, not thought out. They do strange things that constantly, as it were, push them to the side of the road of true Love, which I expect to see after reading the annotation for the film.
The first break of the pattern happens when, instead of a briskly advanced person appearing in the first shots, Ellie turns out to be an obedient girl who spends all her days studying and reading for the night. Her reasoning about her own life is boring, and although Noah is surprised by this turn, a very girl falls into his soul, and love begins to unfold. The second break of the pattern occurs when the characters suddenly learn that summer is over and soon they will have to part. Here, Ellie behaves infantilely - she learned that she should move to New York and hides it from her lover, because there is still time and why to be upset. Then she is quite rightly furious that the guy easily abandons her. But Noah behaves strangely, with a patronizing gesture, “letting go” the girl and to her direct question, is hesitating and evades the answer. The third misunderstanding occurs when Ellie jumps for joy in the wedding veil, and a day later leaves to visit her first love. And finally, the fourth and, perhaps, the most serious bewilderment is when, after spending two days with her beloved man and even receiving the unofficial blessing of her mother, she seriously decides to return to her groom. That's amazing. Incredible (c).
It is incomparable that the film lyrically introduced military cadres, which would be better not to be in it. It is incomparable that Noah, in the first part, positioning himself as a poor man from a sawmill, finds funds not only for a complete reconstruction of the house, but also for further comfortable life in it. It's amazing that the dialogues are not that deep, and sometimes I wanted to shout to the characters, "Say how you feel!" Do not get rid of the viewer with these interjections, do you love or what?!
What had a strong effect on me was open flashes of feeling—the first in Ellie, the second in Noah, the third in the hospital when the woman had a seizure. Everything else seems a bit tortured and sometimes smile-provoking - like the constant talk of painting that Ellie wants to do, but something constantly gets in the way. "I'm a bird!" says young Ellie, but she's not really a bird at all. By the way, the pictures of the birds were very beautiful.
Suddenly a bunch of people around looked at the Memory Diary. I thought I should join you, too.
Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams just brilliantly played the main roles. They live in them. I am a calm person, but their emotions just break, in my opinion, any armor. They're sincere and natural. I read that on the set the actors were constantly in conflict. In the film, however, not everything is smooth, but dislike in the movies and does not smell. That’s why the movie is worth watching.
What else? I don't even know. A completely banal scenario where every next moment is obvious in advance, no mystery, no mystery. Everything is strictly according to the template of soap operas, only compressed to the size of a film. The ending is disgustingly sweet. No, well, I don't believe that could be. That in constant conflict, there can be feelings that you can spend your days in a nursing home for another person, ignoring the rest of the family. I don't. Stupid. Not interesting.
It turned out to be a banal story, perfectly executed by actors. Emotional, lively, sweet and unnatural. But in the course of watching, sometimes you manage to forget about it, dissolved in the emotions of the characters. All ratings are for actors only.
You know, in all my life, I've rarely seen things that I would find close to myself. But this film... it surprised, shocked by how much it is mine.
Perhaps the story is overly idealized and even sugary ... and yes, perhaps it is. But it is real, and from it blows life (precisely “life”, not “reality”).
First you amuse this cute young man, played by a wonderful actor Ryan Gosling - Noah - a dreamer who fools around, climbing on the Ferris wheel, in order to attract the attention of his beloved and ask for a date, risks breaking all his bones, or even his neck. But it looks easy. Also easy is his chill - Ellie (Rachel McAdams). She is intelligent - she thinks about the future and learns, but also - carefree, beautiful - such her reveals love. Her smile is sunshine, her laughter is a bell.
Then it becomes sad and a butthurt appears: they are separated by a wild absurdity, a few years pass. Noah realized his dream - he restored, counted, rebuilt an old house by the lake. Even in his dream, by the way, there was a place for his beloved – he added to the house what she dreamed of, in particular – a workshop, the windows of which overlooked the same lake. And Ellie... she almost graduated from university, got engaged to another and... gave up drawing... and she loved it so much... apparently, with her youth and Noah, the very spark, the nature of this girl disappeared from her life... Their paths separated temporarily, so that they both realized their ideas and came together again, at the right time, as in Coelho’s novel The Alchemist. But, both literally and figuratively, with the return of Noah on her arrival in SeaBrook, her life will return colors.
The first thing she said to him, lying exhausted beside him in a warm bed, was, “How have I lived without it for so many years!” And I don't think it was about sex (you, too, I hope). It was about the very feelings that they cherished in the soul these years.
This is about true love, which was even able to return memories lost due to old age and which did not leave these two even in death.
This story is a dream. And the people who worked on the film once lived it... maybe not a whole beautiful life, but they clearly felt the moments of this big dream. Perhaps this is the mystery why this picture stands out among hundreds of similar ones.
