The first full-length film by Tim Burton. Funny, strange and absurd story. The story of a funny, ridiculous, endlessly crooked man who goes in search of a stolen bicycle from him. However, if you consider the film childish, then all the strangeness of the situation loses relevance, you can imagine that in a parallel reality really lives such a Pee-Wee, an adult man with the worldview of an eight-year-old boy and he is just crazy about his bicycle, and because someone insidious steals it, it is a real disaster.
The film is of course very green, but it already has many characteristic techniques of the master, created a special psychedelic atmosphere, tearing the film from reality. Black humor and fascinating Gothic here is not yet, rather, what is happening looks like a bright circus clown. But in general, a very pleasant impression is formed from this naive, kind and pure, albeit not very intellectually burdened history. There is something insanely funny, but good taste is clearly present in the film.
Of course, this is a great filmmaker, but let’s not forget the actor who made this film even more. The character around which the whole film revolves is entirely his credit. Paul Rubens... It is not listed in the credits, and while watching it, I did not leave the feeling that somewhere I had already seen it. And indeed, you may have seen him in Ted Demme’s Cocaine as Derek. Which, compared to Pee-Wee, is pretty sudden, who's into it, will understand. In general, the actor is interesting and worthy of attention. How to perceive the character Pee-Wee in general is unclear, he is too strange, and not so positive to cause sympathy or touch. You just watch him, and it’s not even a matter of what he will throw out, whether he is good or bad, you just watch the adventures of a mad freak in the world of Tim Burton, you feel that you have got where you wanted, you are “at home” and just rejoice.
It’s a good movie for family viewing. But still, now it is more likely to be relevant for fans of the director, who will enjoy numerous details and a special atmosphere, and all others are more likely to choose something more fashionable and modern for family viewing. The film is not bad, but compared to other works of the director, many of which cost 10 or at least 9. . .
