A harbinger of the Mega Shark. As I watched this film, I kept reminiscing about my bitter experience in the early 2010s, when I used deceptively beautiful posters of low-budget, video-produced American films. I expected to see some semblance of a quality Godzilla, but Reigo is more appropriately compared to films such as Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus and Mega Piranha, because in all respects it is an absolute failure.
The plot is based on the fiction of the fifties, and everything comes down to a simple scheme: a warship is attacked by a sea dragon, which will be defeated only by the ingenuity of the crew. The visual component of the film is so poor that it does not withstand any criticism. Sometimes it seems that the explosions and the flotilla are drawn from some anime film, so everything looks terrible. The same goes for the monster. It was impossible to create anything worse. Many people don’t like what Godzilla looks like in Godzilla 2000, but Reigo is a more painful case. If the budget was enough for the selection of actors, some of whom even try to play, then could not try to draw a little better sea monster? By the way, Reigo is more similar not to Godzilla, but to Dagara - a creature from the film "Motra 2: Battle at the bottom of the sea", in which the graphics are also so much so, but the plot and meaning is much more.
Watching Reigo evokes feelings of deep depression and intense resentment. Apparently, the Americans a year later released a film with a giant megalodon in response to this thrash. The film tries to hurt feelings of patriotism, courage and justice, but it fails. The apparent gloom is actually a cruel torture for perception, which is aggravated by far from the best acting, and dark colors, and terrible graphics. Even though the film is less than an hour and a half long, it seems endlessly long due to such flaws.
If you are among the fans of films studio Asylum, then “Reigo” you will not only like, but will cause delight. For others, I strongly recommend skipping such products a kilometer or a nautical mile. Fortunately, films of this category are quickly forgotten, given the huge number of novelties in the world of cinema.
