novella Emma Zuntz from the almanac Tales of Borges Novella Emma Zuntz from the almanac Tales of Borges:
Judith Godresh as Emma Zuntz turns out to be an interesting choice. It shows the passion and cruelty that a child hides when confronted with an unjust world.
His father told him about his problems and he believed him. I took his words as a maxim without any verification or critical reflection. This is often the case - purposeful people are often the victim of their own delusions, not particularly comparing the information available to them.
The story itself is incredibly interesting. We're being shown the rise of a girl. In front of the viewer, she decides on her future and makes a choice in the direction of not too good deeds. The second plan is the line of Emma's relationship with men. And here it's also defined. And in this case, again, not the best solution.
Alas, I can not even hint at the plot intrigue and bright ending. But they all relate to the story of Borges. The director only offers us a visual design on which a voiceover is superimposed with a reading of the story. The words of Borges are elegant and accurate, verified and beautiful. But how can we evaluate the film itself if we have read the whole story? It turns out that even 30% of the potential of this novel was not used by the creators.
Just imagine what kind of mystery Buñuel or Patrice Shero would have unleashed? Benoit Jacquot chose a simpler path. Yes, Godresh in the role of Emma Zunz beautifully she showed purity, and hatred and violence, and even emphasized the most important thing - how untrue the circumstances were.
