I learned about the existence of this film quite by accident, I saw it of course before, but in fragments, without even implying that they are somehow related. In fact, of course, they are not related, but the director as if sewed them together with a thread of mystery and nebula characteristic of the era of Perestroika.
What do we see? Clips on the cult songs of the legendary Victor Tsoi, Victor Tsoi and his team, personifying the world of freedom and music, and secondary faces that seem to show us the real world - ordinary, everyday, immersed in the summer.
Is it worth watching? Everyone decides. But to plunge into the musical mood of the second half of the 80s will not be superfluous for anyone. Even for those who are not familiar with the work of Victor Tsoi. Still, the abundance of colors and scenery of the then everyday life and require the eye to consider and consider them under your favorite or not melodies. And of course, think about who will act next or close the door.

Those who are selective about the artistic embodiment of their favorite people in cinema, the short film “The End of Holiday” with Tsoi in the title role may not like. Directing, script, cinematography, and, in fact, the work of actors, as they say, is such a...
But if we consider this film as a small reflection of the idol of millions on film, then the attitude to this product of cinematography becomes different. And the greater this time distance - the more valuable each frame. And you already perceive Tsoi as a good actor, and you try to find innovation in directing, and the jitter of the camera seems a great find - it creates a sense of documentary film. And the story? The plot can be fantasized. Although, if you search for materials on this film on the Internet, you can even find it (I personally did not see a clear storyline).
The most valuable thing that left this thesis, which, by the way, was not accepted at the Kiev Institute of Cinematography named after Karpenko-Karyo, calling the group “Cinema” “fascists”, so forever young members of this team and some types of post-Chernobyl deserted Kiev: the disappeared to date attractions in the Hydropark, the desert shores of Lake Telbin, which are now built up with cafes and restaurants and filled with vacationers.
That’s how the universe sometimes jokes with us: you think you’re doing some kind of work, but you’re actually leaving an imprint on history.
Watch The End of Holiday for a glimpse into the past, and once again enjoy a few songs by Victor Tsoi.

I’ll tell you right away that I love film. Fanaticism is an unusual feeling for me, and if its manifestations occurred in my youth, they belonged to the work of Tsoi. Therefore, I look at this filmmaking now and understand that I do not have enough strength to scold it, and my conscience does not allow me to praise it. The way the author of the script (aka the director) stitched the plot evokes a whole range of feelings: pity, pity, disdain... I want to shout to him over the years, ‘Man! Well, where are your balls?! Where's the fire?! You're filming Tsoya! Meaningfulness and pathos are not equal to meaning and epicity! Oh, it's all pointless. I'm smart now, and he's a fool then. 30 years ago I was an even worse fool.
But even then, I'm sure this film would not have excited me, no.
What do we see? A couple of young people of the same type dressed in white, vaguely similar to Yuri Kasparyan and Joanna Stingray, live for themselves, have fun, make guitar sounds, and next to them sits the eternally dull Choi, who at times begins to sing separately from the group. It's his dream, you say? All right, let's dream. After the second song, a girl like Stingray and Choi suddenly dressed in white walk through the park with a stroller and represent the classic image of the cell of Soviet society - the family. Figase, turn! Psvedo-Kasparyan merges somewhere, but only to soon appear in the apartment where Tsoi and pseudo-Stingray live. She and Joanna are having hyhanky hahanki again, and Choi is getting gloomy at the kitchen set. Although, we agree, the realization that some stranger goes to your wife to laugh does not contribute to the development of optimism. Sorry for the spoiler, I let myself, because the plot of the 23-minute film is still nothing.
Summarizing. Every work creates conflict. The conflict that underlies The End of Holiday is slurred and seems far-fetched. What Lysenko wanted besides defending his diploma with the help of a rising star of Russian rock remained unclear.
Neither camera work nor installation is inspiring either.
And now let’s forget about the artistic merits of the picture and ask ourselves: do we have a lot of shots with Tsoi in the mid-80s? And here he is: a film that is not a documentary can be perceived in this way. Why? Because Choi is not an actor. He doesn’t know how to play in the full sense of the word. He plays only one person, and that is himself. And even from the height of the past decades, I am personally ready to forgive him his pathos. For his perseverance and sincerity.
Of course, the short film Sergey Lysenko today remember and know only those who are interested in the work of the group “Cinema”. It is not a cultural heritage or a creative breakthrough. Only connoisseurs from time to time remember the “End of Holiday” and review, as I do today, on this bright day, the birthday of Viktor Tsoi.
Sergey Lysenko’s diploma work could have gone into oblivion, as all the works of students-graduates of creative universities go away, but he made a move of a horse and invited an already quite famous group to star in this small movie. So, thanks to the musicians, this short film has earned immortality in a certain circle of people, and Kiev fans have forever found a place on the lake where you can gather. But, despite all the flaws, I can not turn my tongue to call this work talentless and unideal, 1986 after all. Yes, there is an unprofessional play of actors, not quite a “smooth” editing, a shaking camera and the presence of many blunders, but the idea and morality here are good. The main character appears as a dreamer and romantic who dreams of his own group. And this dream does not give him peace anywhere. Friends find him strange and laugh at him, to which he smiles shyly in response. Even after finding a family and, it would seem, happiness, his gaze often rushes into the distance, where there is still an unrealized dream. As F. M. Dostoevsky wrote: “Truly great people, it seems to me, should feel great sadness in the world.” And Tsoi has this sadness in his eyes. I consider the design of the songs “Close the Door Behind Me” and “Previously there were fires in your eyes.” This is the glass that separates Victor from his dreams, and the consumed family life, which shows the detachment and peculiarity of the hero.
The end of the film is as follows: never give up and do not give in to routine, do not forget about the dream and do not let it fade away. Victor Tsoi, having made a sniper on his head, leaves us in an unknown direction, as he always loved to leave. But he, like his hero, always knew that once they left, we would follow. If they say, “Try to sing with me,” we will sing.
(the name of the text in the spirit of the names of the first two numbered albums of the group)...
In 1986, Kyiv State Institute named after Ivan Karpenko-Kary will release a young director Sergey Lysenko. He will present as his thesis short film "The End of Holiday". This will be done in conjunction with the operator Oleg Smirnov. So to speak, work for two.
"The End of Holiday" was the second in the list of filmography Victor Tsoi film after "Ya-Hhi". It wasn’t a movie at all, but a documentary.
And this? Well, in fact, "The End of Holiday" is also a sketch. But it smells like plot. The picture consists of four clips, flashing like the thoughts of the main character. And these obsessions do not appear spontaneously. Not in a bad head, I mean. The fact is that (as I see it myself) in the minds - and it is in one such head - the idea of change has already been born. Our hearts demand them. They are still in our laughter, in our hearts, and in the pulsation of our veins. Needless to say, Victor Tsoi, as a cultural figure, was almost a prophet! But the song "Change" hasn't been written yet. And I can clearly see that it is already folding into a rhythmic pattern, and the text is born - this is reflected in the very expression of the face of a rock star named Sun. Responsibility for revolution!
In the meantime. While the musicians of the Kino band appear on the beach, wander along the shore and stand near the tree. (No, it's not a pine on the beach). "We will continue to act." Young people move to the music of this song. A little while later, we will be shown the Soviet reality, which was destined to live long. And in the midst of this life, Tsoi, who is tired of either the rattling of Alexei Kovzhun, or the state system. Throwing a box of ground with a sweep, Choi stumbles upon a misunderstanding of friends. Kovzhuna and Svetlana Nikolaeva. He's literally laughed at. And to explain the inexplicable ... here you need to grind your soul to understand without unnecessary words.
Everything in the film has a metaphorical connection. There's a lot to think about. Everyone will understand. Choi also understood something. This is his entire group. Yuri Kasparyan, Georgi Guryanov and Igor Tikhomirov. And in the shot, Choi is like behind glass. He leaned against the glass door. It’s like musicians behind glass. I mean, they're kind of nearby, but there's a glass wall of misunderstanding. Flash and light are like a symbol of illumination. I also saw a high-voltage line; it seemed to me a sign of progress. And Tsoi changes glasses, and can not pick them up for himself. Well, it's easier. There are no such points to look at this world for the main character. In fact, I tend to think that the hero and the actor are the same person.
To tell you the truth, I understand the main character. Because I was the same. Was. And so I was not to the heart was shown in the film the attitude of the main character to household. That's the rocker soul. Of course, life destroys. But "I'm sorry," as they say. This is a topic for a separate conversation. In any case, we all know that Viktor Tsoi has achieved incredible heights and endless glory in real life. The film is also about to end.
It is noteworthy that the song "Previously in your eyes..." was not released on the number albums of the group. It's in the movie. It sounds like a household chore. But then a breakthrough. Choi is not alone. And the hero seems to come out of the movie into life.
Do you consider this sketch to be a milestone for a wide audience? I think the answer is obvious.
I myself, taking into account some even the formation of the creative path (of course, the group "Kino", and not Sergei Lysenko - director), I evaluate this as an interesting work. Colors of the painting in the spirit of Soviet ribbons. Attribution ("Did you see the video?"): lemonade, Pepsi-Cola on the table ... - only adds entourage.
This film was made by Sergey Lysenko as a graduate work. And in this movie starred "Cinema". The Leningrad rock band, which became a real cult and recognizable by each group, went to a meeting. And this is what we see in the picture. .
Well, basically, we see four clips of this team. Song "We will act further", "Close the door behind me, I'm leaving", "In your eyes" and "Try to sing with me". But if you look closely, you can see the everyday routine, and the main character seeks to get away from it.
And the main thing here is seen only as Victor Tsoi. Well, first of all, as a group leader. But besides the uncomplicated eternal, we see the life of the Soviet years. Even the colors were different. And that adds some romance. And on the table is a jar with Pepsi-Cola.
It is difficult to call this sketch some important picture. This is definitely not a national heritage, not a cultural heritage. Yes, even it will be important only for fans of the group “Cinema”. A group that created a breakthrough and even a revolution in the minds and hearts of listeners.
We believe the stars, and everyone shouts, “I’m ready!”
The main character is sick of routine. He notices falsehood around him. He seems to be the only one in the field. But no, he has some musician friends. Together they will walk the streets, show themselves. What it means is the birth of oneself.
When it is not satisfied that the environment takes its primitiveness too seriously and calmly. And the main character of the film has a vocation, there is something that does not let him go and does not give rest - the idea to do it. The idea of breaking up with it all. Intuition in humans.
Songs of Tsoi play an important role, they actually have the whole meaning of what they saw.
I’ve seen this movie before I’ve seen ‘Igloo’, and I like ‘The End of Holiday’ even more than ‘The Needle’, largely because there are more songs. This film is a confirmation that the success of the work is affected not by the high cost of the project, but the freshness of the director’s look and feeling. In style, the sound-operator-spirit is reminiscent of the film by Ringo Starr about Marc Bolan “Born To Boogie”. The only difference is that in the Bugi - Tolkien fantasy, and here - Russian high-rise buildings and steppes, overgrown with high-voltage towers.
The end of the holiday is an artistic value. Interesting as fans of the group “Cinema”, and wonderful films with the Soviet-Russian “soul”.
I would recommend a look!
And those who are weak live from drinking to drinking. They shout, we're not allowed to sing! They shout: try singing here!
... We're going, we're strong and cheerful.
The student-director rather unceremoniously begs Tsoi to star in his thesis and for what? The result is suitable only as a set of clips, and cut everything framing them more than desirable. The dialogue and the level of the actors’ performance at the level of cheap pornography are probably as big as the director (even if their academic performance went well). I doubt that Lysenko had a different purpose in inviting Tsoi, except to ride on a young Soviet rock out of the delicate problem of lack of ideas, otherwise his idea was extremely unoriginal. 'Restructuring spotlight illuminates restructuring.'
The first images are perceived in this way. The Kino group approaches the camera and stands in a pose. Of course, musicians do not see themselves from the outside, which is not very natural. The authors leave it that way. Sounded crudely looped theme from the song “further we will act”. I guess it's just that. The prologue to the first clip is even reluctant to remember. Although Choi is not an actor, he plays much better than others, despite all the unnatural movements at the time of breaking the box. Clips are average, only Tsoya to contemplate (and then for lovers to contemplate the idol), Kiev is the sample of the late eighties and listen to music.
In addition, all this time unfolds some dull plot, conveying the era only involuntarily and with songs intersecting rare places, and then, probably, by miracle. In general, if there was no Cinema, Lysenko would either have to lie down on the ground and die, or prepare his head for the ashes that would necessarily fall from the hands of his mentors in film art. And then I became famous in the glorification of Tsoi and myself at the same time a little, only I would not thank him anyway.
