Painful memories A sad, shocking movie of ruined lives. South Korean director Lee Na-jong is remembered for her work in TV series, and before our attention now her debut film. This film definitely has its cinematic value, because it is a historical drama. Here the story is based on real events, and such films are always especially important.
We see Korea and 1944. Two girls were kidnapped, one poor and the other rich. They were decorated by the Japanese and sent into sexual slavery. An elderly grandmother (who was a poor kidnapped girl) recalls this heartbreaking story. These painful memories are like a knife in her heart. Those dark events changed her life forever, and there is no return. Before us are the dark memoirs of this unfortunate woman who was deprived of her childhood and went through real hell.
The film is made believably and realistically, as if we were looking into the window of someone’s real memories. The entourage and atmosphere of the time were also shown truthfully. Young actresses played cleanly and without falsehood, which makes this movie deeper. The story itself is very strong and so painful. Many of the scenes are shocking to the bone.
If one girl was just kidnapped, the other girl was lured into school, and how despicable that is. In general, what we saw in this film is discouraging, and the limit of the insidiousness, cowardice and greed of the Japanese soldiers here knows no bounds. What was most surprising was that it was said at the end that Korea never received an apology from Japan for the innumerable abuse, barbarism and blasphemy that had been done long ago, but not forgotten.
Both young actresses Kim Sa-ron and Kim Hyang-gi played great and made up a memorable duet. The story of their martyrs, I am afraid, I will never forget. This film strikes at the heart: a very heavy and strong movie.
