Punky vs. Crazy Ranger Every year, a huge number of slashers come out, which most often do not even reach a wide audience, coming out either immediately on VOD or in a limited release. A large number of such products are garbage, which is not worth spending time, but sometimes even in the garbage there are pearls, one of which can easily be called the directorial debut of Jennifer Wexler, and I will immediately say this is clearly one of the best female views on horror. There is no feminism, which many have recently associated women in the director's chair, this is a simple, but no less excellent horror tape.
Punks hang out in some illegal club, and running away from the police with a pack of drugs are going to lie down in the country hut of one of the heroines, but everything goes not according to plan when they meet a mad ranger.
The plot is not particularly original, but the script squeezed out of an ordinary idea all the best, giving the viewer without a doubt one of the (better only Halloween 2018) best slashers of the 10x, and entered my top 10 best horror movies in 2018. Let’s take a closer look at what this movie is.
The main plus is that the film compares favorably with millions of similar slashers - well-written characters and the absence of classic clichés (rock, blonde, nerd). And no matter what anyone says, but for me personally, the most important thing in any horror is the heroes, if they are boring or made of cardboard, then watching them get killed will not be interesting, the viewer will not want to worry about them. But the creators of Ranger managed to create original and really "live" characters. All their actions are logical and they look like real people, not cannon fodder, like the characters of the later parts of Halloween and Friday the 13th.
Another feature and coolness of the film in a colorful villain, which is very important for a slasher. Ranger was something like the epitome of the Reagan era and all conservative politicians in general, that is, the final battle and the conversation between Mr and Ranger is essentially a clash of two generations. Punks are buzzers, with their colorful hair, bright clothing, defiant behavior and sexual freedom. And the Ranger is an extreme right-wing security guard, obsessed with rules, and remembers them all.
It is also worth paying attention to a good selection of actors, good camera work and other technical aspects, but the movie is low-budget, so you should throw another ball.
The disadvantage for me personally was too short timekeeping, a few erotic or scenes about the past killer would not hurt.
Bottom line: a beautiful modern slasher with a simple but well-implemented plot. “Ranger” is an example of how to shoot horror in our time.
