June, 18, can't wait for her mom, with whom she is in conflict, to go on holiday to Colombia with her new lover to throw a party at home. After spending a week in a drunken frenzy and never remembering her mother, she goes to meet her at the airport, but her mother is not among the passengers on the flight, and her phone does not answer. Excited June begins the search for the missing mother, resorting to the help of an unfamiliar assistant in Colombia, discovers hacking abilities and unravels the tangle of family secrets, from which the blood in the veins freezes.
This is not a direct sequel to the 2018 film Search, about a father trying to find a missing daughter using her computer, but an anthology. Despite the fact that the presentation of the material and the plot are similar, this is an independent story with other characters, shot by other directors, but not without the participation of the director of “Search” Anish Chaganti. The film “Missing” is also shot in screenlife format – all events take place on the screen of a computer, smartphone, smart watch and even surveillance cameras. As to "Search" to this film had a hand Timur Bekmambetov, his film company "Bazelevs" acted as one of the producers of the film.
One gets the impression that the film will not surprise with anything new, because we have already seen all this in the “Search”, but from the first minutes the plot of “Missing” is so famously twisted that it does not come off the screen. The narration runs ahead of the engine, you do not have time to catch your breath. New circumstances of the case are constantly opening up, we are delving deeper into history, at each turn we are waiting for an unexpected surprise. When it seems that nothing is surprising and the film slows down a little, the story turns upside down, you are knocked down and you no longer build any theories and guesses and completely surrender to the film.
19-year-old actress Storm Reed like a fish in the water copes with his role, and the other actors do not have time to notice, because all the attention is focused on the computer June. Seamless editing of the film helps the viewer plunge into the mystery of the disappearance of June’s mother, 111 minutes of the film pass in one breath. “Missing” so overstates the bar with endless plot twists that the ending of the film seems too simple, but you can close your eyes to this, because the film already kept the viewer in suspense for almost two hours and it’s time to catch your breath.
