Best film adaptation of "Sea Wolf". I was able to see all the currently existing versions of “Sea Wolf” based on the work of Jack London and, I must admit, this is the most successful, and it’s not even that it is still Soviet, in this case, 1990 and the quality of the film is insignificant. The main thing in this film, in addition to the obvious shooting of the sea, a reliable episode with a shark and other inherent in swimming attributes, the main thing is a bright and all-consuming image of the Wolf Larsen, the captain of the “devil” ship, where only outcasts are recruited.
As I understand it, they all look nothing, soft wax in the hands of Larsen, who embodies the male version of the sea - rudeness, peremptoryness, diktat. I do not recall anywhere in literature or cinema such a hero, who with his many-faced brutality would lead to admiration. In this role, Lubomiras Laucevičius turned out to be the Wolf Larsen, one of his appearance proving that this is him.
Another image of the ship’s cook, performed by Nikolai Chindyakin, repels with its truthfulness, for a long time I did not imagine that this is the actor, so he reincarnated and was convincing. Young Alexei Serebriakov perfectly suited to the role of Lich, he is exactly what he should be, even his partner in misfortune, Martinsh Wilsons, should be just such, with the stamp of noble suffering on his brow.
It should be said that the Sea Wolf is of great importance, because its presence in everything, in constant pitching, in terminology, even in the worldview. Some directorial findings seemed to me quite successful, the image of the second main character, van Weyden, played by Andrei Rudensky, is alternative, but perhaps he should be in the cinema. It is difficult to resist the temptation to show a clear weakling and how he becomes a person in front of the audience.
The book, of course, more accurately and somewhat differently shows all the sufferings of the main character, he has no fear of Larsen, only admiration, but the movie version is interesting and contradictory. I’ve always loved the confrontation between worldviews in this film, materialism and idealism, animalism and fiction.
As I said, the film is in poor quality and definitely more masculine, because the mundane scenes of ship horrors sometimes shock men. But the woman, of course, will be and everyone knows what happens to the ship on which a woman appears.
