For her debut film Palms and Power Lines, director Jamie Duck won a director's prize at the Sundance Festival. The film has not received wide world fame, but it is more than worthy of viewing.
"Palms and Power Lines" is the story of a 17-year-old schoolgirl loitering during summer vacation. Her mother has an intricate and complex relationship with men who randomly appear and disappear in their home. And the girl is constantly sitting on the phone and in the evenings hanging out with classmates, drinking beer, smoking and entering into an intimate relationship that is not at all like love.
One day she meets a caring man who takes her home. He is 34 years old and does not mind seeing her again.
Warm relations are easily established between the characters, which soon develop into love.
You understand me and I understand you. I love you, and you love me. And we don't need anyone else. . .'
Unlike the main character, viewers quickly realize that the 34-year-old man, so enticingly smiling at the young girl, is not at all as simple as he wants to seem.
And when the waitress turns to the girl and reports that she often sees this man with girls and specifies whether she does not need help, the audience has no choice but to wait for the cruel denouement of the film. And it will be cruel and extremely unpleasant.
Palms and Power Lines is a rather harsh love movie. About what a life catastrophe can be a naive love and trust in another person.
One critic wrote that it was “an exceptional film that he would never want to watch.” Perhaps this picture is not exceptional, but high praise, combined with an unwillingness to see it again, is easy to share. “Palms and Power Lines” is one of those films that become not just a watched movie story in memories, but turn into part of the viewer’s worldview. He defiles the image of the world with vivid proof that even such a pure feeling as love can become a man’s worst enemy.
"Palms and power lines" does not carry a bright man-hating position. Perhaps that is why it remained unnoticed - this film is about violence and manipulation, but equally outrageous is caused not only by the actions of men, but by the actions of the main character.
The rating of the tape in IMDB is 6.7.
