The Great Dave Grohl and the Little Movie It is difficult to describe the impression of such a horror film with several worthy episodes of a comedy with internationally recognized musicians, and it is possible and not necessary to do this.
Dave Grohl frontman and leader of the group Foo Fighters, musician-instrumentalist, drummer of the legendary, epochal group Kurt Cobain Nirvana, according to his own stories learned to play drum houses on pillows. He appears in the film as himself and, due to a curse, kills members of his group in various Jesuit ways. In general, famous musicians and groups of the mainstream periodically flash in the cinema in cameo, episodic or main roles. Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, who appeared in many films from Back to the Future to the recent Babylon, or Guy Ritchie’s Sting in Maps, Money, Two Guns, comes to mind. In the main roles in the cinema appeared pop diva Madonna, Lady Gaga. I don’t remember a movie in which the story is based entirely on a real band. I can tell you that musicians are not actors. In this film, they play the role of the full timing of the film, and with the exception, perhaps, only Dave, do it somehow awkward and inorganic. Magic, harmony and chemistry between them appear only when they take tools in their hands, and then it becomes clear where their real element is.
Foo Fighters has been around since 1995, with their first album entirely created and recorded by Dave Grohl, who after Cobain's suicide even considered quitting music. Rock band throughout its long existence works in the style of post-grange, with elements of pank, stouner, hardcore and even pop-rock. Their work, unlike the gloom and protest of Nirvana, is fervent, positive, in a good way hooligan. Foo Fighters music videos also reflect this mood, they are always cinematic and vibrant, where the musicians play small roles with dressing up. Drummer in several videos, as if before us an ancient Roman amphitheater, plays female roles in a woman's dress. Clips are always shot with a lot of self-irony and full of humor. Several videos were shot in collaboration with the famous actor and musician Tenicious D Jack Black. Also interesting is the fact that the video for the song “Everlong”, considered the best in their discography, was shot by Michel Gondry, a famous extraordinary French director and screenwriter, who later directed “Eternal Sunshine of the Pure Mind”. In general, Foo Fighters have always been close or, if I may say so, close to visual art.
I’m writing this and I know I’m not talking about this movie. I don’t want to evaluate it at all, because without taking into account all the above context, it is impossible to perceive it. Conditionally remove Foo Fighters and before us a cheap trash movie with mediocre actors. But for fans of rock music, this picture gives a certain nostalgia for the past, their favorite, but already quite old musicians remind of themselves and still give them their creativity in different formats.
The question arises why this experiment was created, which in all respects does not fit into the style of Foo Fighters. Dave Grohl subsequently released a music album under the pseudonym Dream Widow, which included all the musical compositions in the film. This is not a collection of soundtracks for the film, but an album of full-length compositions in the style of death metal. Just as the film uses the stamps of the horror film genre, the music album uses the stamps of the death metal genre in the form of Growing, Screaming, lowered guitars and sharp changes of pace. Maybe it was a way to show the public all the facets of his talent in compositions so unrelated to Foo Fighters and Dave Grohl.
