Love conquers illiteracy! If I were asked if you know the director Martin Ritt, I would say no. But after watching the movie "Stanley and Iris", I did not lazy and watched his filmography. I was pleasantly surprised by the fact that he made films with my beloved Paul Newman (" Paris Blues, Hud, Ombre). Such surprises can be found if you are fond of cinema.
But it was a bit of a digression to warm up a bit because the film is very good. Kind, a little sentimental, but it has a unique aura of those people who worked on it. And worked in addition to Martin Ritt real masters: Robert De Niro and Jane Fonda. They did it very precisely, geometrically verified. If Jane, who plays a quite ordinary woman Iris, is not so spectacular in acting, then Robert, who plays the man Stanley, who can not read and write, more than compensates for this case. It works for two people. A very gentle scene when Stanley rolls Jane's bike.
A few words can be said about the story itself. Two people, a man and a woman, are no longer young. At the age at which we see them, it is difficult and difficult to get together. Everyone has their own cockroaches in their head, each has their own experience, which may not allow a small spark to grow into a big flame. It's really not easy. But there are such directors and actors that people believe in miracles.
I can’t help but mention the small but characteristic role of Stanley’s father. Oh, I really liked him. What an interesting and extraordinary person. And only a few seconds ago I learned, thanks to KinoPoisk, that this role was performed by the son of Fyodor Ivanovich Chaliapin. These are two good news.
In a word, it turned out to be a good bright movie that will always have its audience!
