The 2001 film Vanilla Sky. Joan Osbourne's song is called "One of Us" and uses a phrase from the refrain "What if God was one of us?". I personally really like the song. The Oscars and Golden Globes were nominated for Paul McCartney’s “Vanilla Sky.” In general, the entire soundtrack of the film is at the highest level. It's nice to be like this. . .
I've already lost sight of the Vanilla sky. And every time I watch this movie, I immerse myself in this masterpiece again and again. The film is not only visually beautiful. Even after 23 years, he looks in one breath and wants to sink in. Because the world is special, there is something to think about. . .
On the one hand, it may seem that this is a story about an ordinary rich man living a complex life cycle, but this is far from the case, you can recognize yourself in it, a lot of important and interesting things are touched upon here, Cameron Crowe’s production is delightful. Every frame, every quote is not just nostalgia, namely balm for the soul.
You seem to remember everything and know what will happen and what will happen next, but how beautiful and sensitive it is to watch it. It seems that there is no strong romance and some abundance of feelings, the film itself is a set of everything so different and interesting and it is very nice to watch once again.
Of course, do not forget the cast, he is very star and magnificent, and the acting of course, beyond any doubt, is also impressive as the director.
Tom Cruise.David gives a huge amount of emotion. At first, he’s funny, he’s witty and seems like an ordinary party player, but of course later it becomes clear that this is a rather deep image. Tom perfectly showed all the emotions of his character. Today it is popular, but that does not mean that it will always be so. I really liked the way he portrayed the bewilderment and pain of his character. We see Tom here in completely different positions and this is what his hero is beautiful. The world of Vanilla Sky is so voluminous that you want it to go on forever.
Kurt Russell. I really liked the image of a psychologist, the tandem with Tom Cruise was very good and interesting.
Vanilla Sky is not an easy movie to remember. This is a very emotional movie with its interesting world, which is very beautiful visually filled with excellent acting and of course very strong directing. You can see yourself in David, at least in part. A lot of romantic and soulful music and of course a lot of truthful quotes, some motivate, others have something to think about.

The intonation of the Spanish original is quite different, more lyrical, intimate, which is facilitated by music. The normal pace of action allows you to understand the plot, unlike the remake, where the notorious American dynamism and “drive” turns the plot into an intractable puzzle, when episodes and turns jump on top of each other and destroy each other like patterns in a kaleidoscope (you need to have computer brains with a speed of at least 2.5 GHz and 32 GB of RAM in your head to understand everything on the first view). Only Penelope Cruz in Vanilla Sky is prettier (and much more!) than Open Your Eyes, both in appearance and in play. The remake is flavored with some dose of humor, but in American (and American standard); in this kind of plot, jokes, on the one hand, diversify the narrative, but on the other - destroy the piercing style more characteristic of the Spanish original.
“Somehow she knew you best. Like you, she could not forget that one night when true love seemed possible.
2001 for the Spanish director Alejandro Amenabar turned out to be a turning point: in the spring came his stunning English-language debut - the mystical drama "Others", and in the autumn the Hollywood remake of his melodrama "Open your eyes" - "Vanilla Sky" - for the redesign of which took Cameron Crowe, director of "Jerry Maguire" and the cult drama "Almost Famous" (Oscar Award for Best Screenplay in 2001).
Yes, I bow to the originality and unsurpassed sensuality of the Amenabar creation, but still my soul and heart are forever given to the notorious remake essence of the American version, the Hollywood gloss of which elevated the strengths and findings of the original source into the visual absolute, revealing to the viewer, in my humble opinion, one of the best melodrama of the zero. As the Spanish director stated at the time, “VN” is a bold, innovative work by Crowe, delighted with a new and fresh approach to most of the original mise-en-scene. To me, these projects are like two very special brothers. In other words, they sing the same song, but in completely different voices: one loves opera, and the other loves rock and roll.
Indeed, Crowe turned out to be an equally sensual, extremely passionate and soulful film - a fascinating kaleidoscope of emotions, sensations, memories, gushing with disarming musical energy and captivating with its homage essence. No wonder director Crowe claims that the plot contains more than 428 references to various cultural phenomena: books, works of art, films, albums of famous artists, etc. And each new viewing brings incredible pleasure when the next unravelling of these audio-visual charades. At the same time, music plays in the film, if not important, then, undoubtedly, one of the main roles: it is not for nothing that Crowe plowed off several years as a music columnist in Rolling Stone magazine (part of this experience formed the basis for the largely autobiographical brilliant film Almost Famous!). According to the director, the songs in VN were selected so that their lyrics constantly convey the emotions of a particular scene. When the characters are silent or do not speak, the sounding compositions continue or intensify the emotional component of the episode. Listen to them carefully.” And here Crowe is not cunning - the film has a stunningly enveloping soundtrack, worthy of settling in the playlists of every self-respecting movie and music lover (original magic music by Nancy Wilson + Bob Dylan, Peter Gabriel, R.E.M., Radiohead, The Chemical Brothers, Beach Boys, Joan Osborne, Sigur Rous, Underworld and a bunch of others).
“Vanilla Sky” is a hypnotizing alloy of exhilarating phantasmagoric melodrama and audio-visual melancholy, and the picture seems to capture the last moments of fluttering sentimentality and yet undimmed urban freedom. Exactly a year after the start of filming, America and the world will change forever, and Crowe will win back from the studio the right to leave the distant silhouettes of the World Trade Center towers against the background of the capital and pinching its unearthly beauty of the sky.
Personally for me, “Heaven” is also a cinematic piece of amber, in which my sense of youth and memories of the main passion of my life that is just beginning to gain full strength and power (for the first time “Heaven” I missed through myself in the cinema in the distant 2002). Sowing mental cacophony and overwhelming emotion from the next viewing of the adored film is succinctly and accurately described by the quote of the main character: “This is what it means to be young?” Do you secretly believe that you are the first person in history to live forever? Oh, I always let a treacherous tear in the heartbreaking finale.
The anniversary of the picture is a great reason for the hundredth time to review or first get acquainted not only with the brilliant remake, but also with the charming original (by the way, in both versions, the role of Sofia was played by an extraterrestrial in her image Penelope Cruz).
P.S. Don’t forget about “Almost Famous.”
Kulik is crazy about this swamp!
The first year of the third millennium gave the world the hands of American filmmakers of world magnitude at least two significant remakes in the field of fiction: one of them was a remake of the classics of the 60s & #39; Planet of the Apes' but showed no better quality rethinking of the masterpiece, which did not need the latter; the other - reshooting the Spanish super hit only four years ago, which, due to the low demand for Spanish cinema compared to Hollywood, did not receive world fame and did not get on Russian film screens, but was available only on videotapes in translation by Kartsev. Remake from the United States to the picture 'Open your eyes' (thanks to which many learned, in fact, about the original) did not pursue the banal goal of modernizing the original story or stuffing it with meaningless special effects: although both versions belong to the genre of fiction, there is no huge amount of computer graphics in them, since the film is also a tense psychological thriller and sensual melodrama at the same time, and in these directions an abundance of spectacular action to nothing, quite beautiful types and skillful in the latter, only in the original, and perhaps in the same way. Having watched both versions, starting with a remake for the first time, not knowing about the existence of the original, and later - in the correct order, I can say that it is desirable to watch the original version first, and then a remake of the USA, since the latter not only embellishes the picturesque views, but also supplements the plot with new dialog and script details , and therefore looks more multifaceted and difficult to perceive - it is not in vain that many complain that they did not understand anything in ' Vanilla sky' that it seemed mysterious and mysterious, as it is happening in the finale, 39; Many who have watched both versions, on the contrary, not only admire the remake, but also claim that, after viewing this version, compared to it, the Spanish original seems "Dumb Movie" & #39;.
In general, the script ' Vanilla Sky' confidently follows in the footsteps of its Spanish predecessor, repeating all the key events and plot twists, but this is not a frame-by-frame remake, but truly improvement of an already amazing and shocking story.. ' Open your eyes' - the story of how a successful young businessman, consisting in a relationship with a modeling girl, has the inadvisibility to fall in love with his best friend, which she soon comes to his love, who dies in his face, and dies in his face, and who soon after he dies in his accident. All this is just the beginning of a much more twisted story, in which there are fantastic inclusions on the topic of future technologies. What is the difference between the US version and the source version? Everything that happens is many times more filled with live dialogues, the scenes are equipped with a brilliant editing, and, of course, we have four familiar faces in the main roles - the heroine who won the heart of the main character, plays the same Spanish actress as the similar heroine in the original. The story, invented by representatives of the nation ' hot blood', already in the original version is filled with passion, experiences and mystical tension, and the stunning result of such a rich fantasy, embodied in several genres and directions, was multiplied by the authors of the American version, so that this film can rightfully be called one of the best remakes in the history of cinema, and this is not only the merit of popular actors. The authors managed to combine a fantastic thriller with a touching melodrama, and the intensity of passions in the film only grows until the final scene, and during the film you will be amazed several times by each turn of events, saying phrases like ' can not be!', ' amazing!' or that is more suitable for the lexicon of each. The most sincere feelings for the main character are provided!
My love, you know, has no boundaries.
As the sky has no bottom or edge.
Turn around at the door for a moment.
No, I don't hold you, I forgive everything.
In the dialogues of the characters, there was more sensuality, which, perhaps, in some places seems too sweet (what is only the monologue of the heroine Cameron Diaz behind the wheel before the accident), but a phrase that many are outraged by its childish stupidity (this phrase was used by one of the Russian singer-one-day Maria Rzhevskaya in the period after the release of the film), will be repeated again at the moment and in the situation, after which the whole charm of this saying will become clear (the most impressive advice is to stock up with handkerchiefs at this point).
I will wait for you over the horizon.
Or I'll come back.
I'll definitely be back, just trust me. .
Someday the time will come,
And you're gonna blow me away.
You can’t tell anyone where...
You see, the doors have been opened for me!
Don't be afraid, just trust me!
Don't cry, I'll come back to you.

Forget everything you knew about life and just open your eyes.39
What exactly inspired this psychedelic abracadabra with a multi-level plot, where there is no beginning and no end and all the action merges into one continuous duration, it is not difficult to guess and we must admit that it was performed at a high level and with comprehensive, deep knowledge of the subject. Of course, everyone, even the most down-to-earth mind, sooner or later has doubts about the sinister, delicate question about the illusory nature of the surrounding world and life itself, which, as the body decrepits, I have no doubt, sometimes turns into a nightmare. There is no living human being who does not ask himself or hope for a post-mortem state. What will become of the personality that many hold on to with an iron grip—what will become of this little drop when it dissolves into the ocean of what we have come to call the unconscious, when no one, including even such notorious acidic people as Timati Leary, has (or could have) evidence that their waking personal dreams will continue after their physical brains have dissolved into the ether? . . .
Cameron Crowe and his fellow screenwriters, reflecting aloud on this subject, threw here so much that the devil will break his leg, apparently with the desire to find a hopeful answer to the exciting questions and in particular, how deep freeze or cryonics can guarantee the preservation of the person within the framework of her earthly experience and how much 39; controlled sleep 39; or half-dream, has the hope of being managed when 99.999% of the inhabitants of the planet acquire here their unfortunate experience with unpopular decisions and actions and, as a rule, with the same unfortunate choice.
What the posthumous journey will turn out to be, hell, Kamaloka, controlled sleep or something else, of course, no one can know, but they fantasized here from the heart, sending David Ames (Tom Cruise) to a long psychedelic trip to the hidden corners of his own subconscious, that if anything can be compared with anything, it is only with posthumous experiences in Bordeaux, where ' it is a kind of board of directors ' from the gnostic astral astral sons of David Kazophara, sent to Sofia, under such a malicious persona, under him, Sofia, and Sofia, under such a persona, under the same name of Sofia, etc. It sounds like complete nonsense, but it is not without logic. . .
Alas, no one can know for sure what can be expected outside the threshold, whether it will be a wonderful paradise dream or a nightmare trip in the nooks of his own subconscious or nothing at all - it is not harmful to dream and ' Vanilla Sky' Cameron Crowe deserves attention only because touching on this burning issue, already, without will, makes you think about it. From all this it is clear that real art, including literature and cinema, has already hit a protracted plateau, and how long it will last, and how many more artists will be tormented by unpopular dilemmas about the choice between progress and stagnation, is unknown. Perhaps change will come when David Ames prefers lucid reality to lucid, externally imposed sleep, but when will it be? In the meantime, it remains to enjoy 'Vanilla Sky' - one of the best films of recent decades!
The film “Vanilla Sky” was one of those paintings for me, the names of which were long ago stuck under the crust because of the old advertising on VHS, preceding the beloved “Mummy” & #39; and “Duck Stories” & #39;. Growing up and fascinated by cinema, I now and then came across this movie among the different tops, characterizing the samples included in them as ' tapes, the endings of which will blow your brain'. Clichéd, I agree, but still intriguing.
And now, keeping in mind ' the ending will blow the brain', I, without even reading the synopsis, in order not to spoil the impression, decided to finally get acquainted with ' Vanilla sky', expecting if not a fascinating spectacle, then, at least, a memorable and interesting ending.
The first half of the film, or maybe even two-thirds, did not foreshadow anything like it. The narration is conducted on behalf of the main character, who is on ' interrogation' the psychiatrist and retells the events of the past that led him to the current state of affairs (unreliable narrator is an ageless classic). It becomes clear that behind everything that is happening there is some secret, the disclosure of which, obviously, should surprise at the very end.
We are presented with a successful, rich, handsome young man played by Tom Cruise, who after the death of his father inherited a solid fortune and management of a giant corporation. The hero throws parties, changes girls like gloves, has fun; in general, enjoys life and does not know grief. Then there is a standard melodrama. The character is between new and old passions: brunette and blonde. He's crazy about the first one, and he's tired of the second one. The latter, however, does not want to part and makes a quarrel. As a result, by an unfortunate coincidence, this leads to a serious injury to the protagonist, which becomes the starting point for the key conflict of this film.
At this stage of viewing, it seems that the main theme of the film is quite clear - a classic story & #39; From the Prince in the Mud' where the hero, who has everything and burns through life, must fall, be reborn and rethink his values, realizing that the love of others went to him only because he is a handsome millionaire and his merits in this are not - just luck; and also that money can not solve any issue.
But in the course of the action, the attention of the viewer, as if by accident, is emphasized on various details that seem unimportant, but at the same time they are enough for any person who closely follows the plot to understand that they are worth considering. These are the dreams of the protagonist, one way or another reflecting his subconscious understanding that he is lonely; and his favorite picture of his mother with the vanilla sky; and a TV show about a dog frozen in a piece of ice, and then successfully resuscitated a few years later. Yes, even the main fear of the hero is height, reflecting his inner fear of losing his fortune and falling, touching the ground, realizing that he may not deserve all this.
All these disparate pieces begin to fold just in the last third of the picture, when the melodrama fades into the background, and its place is occupied by visual and plot constructs characteristic of the genre ' puzzle films' when what is happening on the screen constantly raises questions: ' What have I just seen?', ' What is happening?', ' How is it all interconnected?' The events surrounding the hero become more like a dream, or rather a nightmare, so that it is almost impossible to distinguish reality from the product of the subconscious. The mystery marked at the very beginning is gradually revealed.
The sci-fi element claimed in the genre of the picture finally begins to play an important role, and not just flash at the beginning of the film in the form of a retractable TV from the floor and a miracle glove compartment with a built-in communication device such as a smartphone. All those details that were pointed out to us in the course of the tape, elegantly and logically weave into the canvas of the plot, acquiring meaning for the hero and the viewer. The director diligently chews everything to the smallest detail, so as not to leave any room for interpreting what happened and to form in the mind of the beholder a feeling that he understood everything and this & #39; rewarded & #39; for the time spent on the film, so that all the questions that arose earlier were resolved and all the points were put where they belong. And here, all who have looked at ' Vanilla Sky' can be divided into two camps: those who like this approach with an explanation of everything and everything, and those who are more interested to think for themselves and come to their own conclusion. Where you go depends on your personal preferences.
As a result, we get an average melodrama in all respects (it occupies a significant part of the film and part of the audience can not wait until the final), which towards the end turns into a confusing story with intrigue and anticipation of the unusualness of its denouement, and this metamorphosis personally saved the film for me from getting into the gray zone of six points & #39. The brain, as was pointed out by the maker of the top, of course, does not explode, but looks decent and quite capable of surprising. I bet that at the time of the film’s release in 2001, it really could have left a feeling of something unusual and dazzling. However, by 2020 there are many tapes with similar plot twists, and if you have seen at least one, the effect of what you see will not be so powerful.
P.S.
This movie is a vivid representative of the subgenre of puzzle films, which can be conditionally characterized as "Lite puzzle films" & #39; where the authors chew all the tricks of their picture to the smallest detail, so that no one doubts that he understood everything correctly. As examples, representatives of this subgenre include ' Eternal radiance of pure reason' and 'Remain'. Well, if you like to scratch your head and do not feel discomfort from the fact that you misunderstood something in the film, it is better to still pay attention to the work of David Lynch, or, for example, the film 'Enemy' Denis Villeneuve.

Good day, dear friends! Today I would like to talk a little bit about the film ' Vanilla Sky' directed by Cameron Crowe. Today you are young, healthy, beautiful, rich. Everyone needs you, everyone wants to talk to you. But how long will it last? Never thought about it... For nothing. It could all be over in an instant. Maybe fifty years from now, maybe tomorrow. Nothing is eternal and our future is unknown. And before that happens, many people would probably like to know if they have real friends. Who needs your money and who needs your money? It’s a shame to admit, but despite the fact that the film was released in 2001, I watched it just the other day for the first time, although I repeatedly came across it in different collections.
High-profile names on the list of actors even before watching the film prepare the viewer for a certain level of the film, and the participation of Steven Spielberg brings a corresponding charming atmosphere of supernaturality. From an acting point of view, everything looks very strong and beautiful. Undoubtedly, this film is one of the best in the filmography of Tom Cruise, but certainly not the best in principle. Although his hero must be penetrated, he must be understood. In Tom's filmography, this film deserves special attention. Cruz has always succeeded in such ambivalent types, but this is without exaggeration one of the most heartfelt. It is difficult for me to imagine what a person who is used to and fully aware of his visual beauty feels, after an accident turns into a complete antipode of the former with a permanently disfigured face. This is a different person, both inside and outside. A man who is afraid of his reflection in the mirror, who does not know how to live with what is now. And is it worth it? You can talk as much as you like about spiritual beauty, but as a rule, either those who are externally beautiful (and know about it), or those who originally did not have this beauty.
Cameron Diaz and Penelope Cruz as a confrontation between two rebellious passions, one beginning. Both beckoned, called for themselves, but were incredibly different, and at the same time united, merging into an unrestrained element that absorbs all of David without a trace! The heroine of Cymeron Diaz, Juliana (by far the best role of this actress) lost her mind because of her love for a man. The character of the actress is mostly negative, but it can be understood. Cameron Diaz was able to convey to us all the suffering of her character. Honestly, I believed her, every word I said in the car. There is little logic in her words, but so much pain and emotions.
Kurt Russell and Tilda Swinton are natural, the roles seem to be written for them, but probably the actors were created for such roles. They demonstrate a high level of professionalism with every movement, eye play, even the pronunciation of words.
Almost all actions in this unusual film are accompanied by beautiful behind-the-scenes music, which accurately conveys all the colors and atmosphere of a particular scene. From a psychological point of view and from the point of view of artistic performance, this film is very, very difficult. With the help of dreams, half hints and symbolism, this film makes you immerse yourself in it as a classic literary work to reveal the director’s encrypted messages addressed to the viewer. One may disagree with the director’s psychology, but one cannot deny his genius.
David (Tom Cruise) is the master of his life. He has everything - beauty, money, a girl who loves him and a best friend. But it's not enough for him. His life collapses in an instant. David has an accident. He survived but suffered severe injuries and his face mutilated. Before the accident, the life of the main character was perfect. He sincerely believed that he had the right to use other people, whether it was Julianne in love with him or his friend Brian. Everyone loved David and he knew it. But fate sometimes has a very perverse sense of humor. Life punished David when everyone around him turned his back. The ugliness and anger of the whole world took possession of his essence. And the girl, the only one he loved, left him.
Sometimes I wonder what the moral of this movie is. Playboys like David, confident in their irresistibility have always been and always will be. And they probably never even watch this movie, and if they watch it, they probably won’t understand anything. But for anyone who can understand, this film is a masterpiece. If we consider the film from the dramatic side, then the main character did not cause me any sympathy. Everything that happened to him, he deserved!
Although this film and a remake of the Spanish film ' Open your eyes ' but nevertheless the remake is bright and touching. Cameron Crowe eventually shows us a visually very beautiful and infinitely tragic love story with bitter overtones about the fatal role in the fate of people recklessly committed by them actions. A story that tells us basic truths about how illusory love and happiness are, about the inability of man to rule over time despite the miracles of technological progress, about how important it is to understand the value of every minute spent with a loved one, to appreciate the casual glance or insignificant touch, the importance of which you begin to understand only when you lose this happiness. For me ' Vanilla Sky' a film about the point of no return. About those moments of life in which it is impossible to return and fix something.
When the protagonist realizes the true values of his life it will be too late, he has passed his point of no return. You need to appreciate the people who exist in your life, appreciate the here and now, and then you may not have to dream that all this was just a dream, or to start all over again.
The film confirms one simple idea that everyone likes to repeat, but few understand – we create problems for ourselves. Our thoughts shape our lives. The essence of man is that even in the absence of problems in his life, a person often creates these problems in order to overcome them heroically. Or break under their weight.
Finally, I would like to note the original style of the picture, partly because of which it gained such popularity. For example, the final episode on the roof of a skyscraper is the color of the vanilla sky, the wind from the future and the most important person nearby. Thanks to such images and much more, this film will be remembered for a long time! This movie is definitely worth watching! Just open your eyes and plunge into the atmosphere of the vanilla sky. Without bitterness, you can't feel sweet. A man never learns to appreciate his happiness until he experiences grief.
Thank you for listening to my review!
First, I saw the original version of Open Your Eyes. Despite the fact that one of the main roles is played by the same Penelope Cruz, the film shot, but I did not get. Quite another thing happened to me after watching Crowe's Vanilla Sky. Despite the fact that the new version of the film almost repeats the original, I looked at this story in a completely different way.
David Ames (Tom Cruise) is an avid bachelor, rich and generally a pamper of fate. His life is largely devoid of difficulties. David has a best friend Brian (Jason Lee), a chic apartment and no less chic girlfriend Julie (Cameron Diaz), with whom he is in no hurry to start a serious relationship. He is also the head of his own publishing house. David had no idea that anything in his life was wrong or had to be different. But it becomes different when, quite accidentally, Brian introduces David to Sophia (Penelope Cruz). This fateful meeting divides David’s life into before and after.
She fascinated me... The last girl in New York with the remnants of simplicity.
Needless to say, the cast is awesome? To be honest, I recognize Tom Cruise's talent, but I've always been indifferent to him. In this film, he played exactly as he needed to play the role. Yes, his David is not perfect, but it is impossible not to sympathize with him. Cruz shows us that transformation, the evolution of the character from a superficial reveler to a deep man with inner torments and fears. He conveys all emotions exactly as necessary and at the right time. Penelope as Sophia is so good that David’s feelings for her are clear and understandable to the viewer. Surrounded by soulless dolls and pictures, he could not help but fall in love with the kind, funny and straightforward Sophia. Cameron Diaz showed Julie's desperation very well. In general, there are no secondary characters at all. The chemistry between Tom and Penelope worked wonders on screen. You believe in this love at first sight and no longer require proof from the heroes.
Every scene and every frame seems to be thought out to the smallest detail. Songs and themes are perfect for this. Again, a good example when the picture touches, and the music just goes to the depths of the soul and enhances the effect. Neither of them draws attention to themselves. “Vanilla Sky”, at one time, was cursed by critics for the Hollywood gloss, but to me, this is not a gloss, but what is happening is really shrouded in some haze. Only it doesn't repel. You don't feel like you're watching a banal drama. There are not a few hidden hints and all sorts of Easter eggs in the film. When you look at it, you notice something new for yourself. But to the foreground is not a star cast, not a cool director and not even the visual / musical part, but its semantic load. In just 130 minutes, you can think about love, friendship, father-child relationships, the transience of life and much more.
After this film, there is a pleasant aftertaste, like a freshly drunk coffee with vanilla on a frosty morning. It envelops the soul and warms.
I watched the vanilla sky on a hot summer morning, with the windows wide open and the curtain closed, so that I could see something on the screen. Throughout it, I tried to get rid of a very primitive prejudice to the genre of melodrama, trying not to indulge. In general, I have a complex, complex relationship with films like this: they often evoke completely opposite emotions.
This film seemed good to me, it looks interesting in 2019, as a relic of the beginning of zero. This ' vanilla' color filter is such a forgotten archaism that no one would think of doing it now. ' Vanilla Sky' maybe even then looked a little 'naive' as Penelope Cruz put it, but in any case, at the distance of time it belongs to the year 2001, much more than the history of world cinema. I'm not sure I made it clear enough. I mean, all these (yes) wet night sidewalks, walks in autumn Central Park and so on, of course, very unimpressive moves after almost 20 years, but if you take what is happening as a long gone era, you take them as a given, not upsetting or exciting. It's about the living conditions of Tom Cruise and the others in those years. That's how I'll probably remember them. There is no doubt that the time has come to regard the 2000s as almost as distant as the 90s. And, therefore, the products of creativity ripened under the sun of this unique time should be perceived not as something preparing modern art, not as a prototype, but as something separate, defined by its era, and marked by its characteristic style.
The main thing that did ' Vanilla Sky' for me personally - it touchingly told the history of New York at the turn of the century, added another shade to the palette ' Friends', films by Woody Allen, Toby Spider-man Maguire, and even ' Sex and the City'. For me, these are all facets of one time. But I certainly wouldn't put a weeping emoji here, or even a handkerchief emoji.
After watching, I only had one wish. Look again! No rewinding, from the beginning to the last titer. Incomprehensible and peculiar. A fantastic melodrama that combines all genres of cinema.
In the lead role, David is rich, overconfident. When he runs his own company, he feels like God in the world. Able to receive any person for their own purposes. He uses Juliana for his pleasures. Ignoring the feelings of other people, he throws parties. Drinking, having fun, but living?
The discovery at the next drunkenness on the occasion of his birthday, becomes Sofia. Who is she? David only knows that this is a friend of his. Standing out from the background, Sofia captures his attention. Inconspicuous at first glance, but the deeper you dig, the more interesting it is.
Someone who is incapable of any human feelings other than vanity has fallen in love? What a miracle!
David, the character is controversial... On the one hand, the underappreciated children of celebrities who have not received love in full become callous. Protected from any attacks, they think that this is how they will live in idyll. This is the kind of child that David is. On the other hand, a prisoner of his own prison who finally found his early release.
Accidents are not accidental, a hundred percent hit. The film realized the conceivable and unthinkable dreams of man, about the ideal life. But is the idealization of life really something that will help you live a happy life? Maybe some of our dreams need to be just dreams? Man must suffer, dream, make mistakes, and regain his wings. Otherwise, what's the point? Ask yourself these questions and you will understand your meaning.
The trailer shows an example of what consequences can be due to a sick, broken heart. There are a lot of people who want to be recognized in one way or another. David destroyed Juliana’s life, he reluctantly “enslaved” and made her love. She, in turn, proved that women can take revenge. By killing yourself and your loved one. Fate is still a scoundrel, he who loves the ideals of life is forced to learn to truly live.
Living in the shoes of a rich handsome man is not so difficult, and you try differently. Knowing the other and staying the same. Not as easy as it seems. When everything you loved became hateful. Except for one... A fleeting ghost, Sofia. One meeting that changed a man. What a person is willing to do, for the sake of the favor of another.
If you don’t know what to do, you have mixed feelings. Maybe you’re not in the mood at all, or maybe your girlfriend wants to see something new. New, it may be the forgotten old. In some places a fascinating picture, going through to tears. If you have not experienced a storm of emotions from the cinema for a long time, here they will be in bulk!

Directed by Cameron Crowe already worked with Tom Cruise and now they again worked together on the stunning films of 2001 "Vanilla Sky". Tom Cruise already at that time did not need introduction, as well as his talent.
From the first minutes of the film, we see Tom Cruise, who plays David Ames, the heir to his father’s empire, and who has everything you want: money, popularity, his own expensive apartment and his own company. And it seems that life just can’t be worse and everything will be just perfect, but one fateful day completely changed the whole picture of David’s life: an accident, a mutilated face and anguish for the rest of his life. And a friend who seemed at first to be always loyal and faithful turned away from him. a good lesson for a lifetime, how you can lose everything, and most importantly, be useless to anyone, but there is only one bright feeling in the world that can save everyone and inspire hope for the best is love.
The love line is very clearly traced in the film between the characters of Tom Cruise, Cameron Diaz and Penelope Cruz. The character of Tom looks very carefree and does not appreciate love as a serious relationship and with the prospect of starting a family for the future. The heroine Cameron looks like that beautiful and sexy girl who at first seems frivolous and frivolous, but this is only at first glance, she is in love with David and feels used, these feelings cost David very dearly, as soon as they both got into the car. The heroine of Penelope Cruz is the embodiment of a real dream for any guy, they are sweet, natural, independent of wealth and money, she does not care about expensive cars and money, she is a creative person and believes in sincere love, and it seems to me that David’s sincere feelings for her character awakened in him human feelings and hope for the best.
In the film, beautiful music, good work of the cameraman and, of course, acting, and I will also note the peculiar psychological aspect of this film, there was a feeling when you did not understand what reality you are in.
"Vanilla Sky" is a serious philosophical film that raises many life questions and life truths, which demonstrates an excellent acting.

Raz 3 tried to see this beautiful creation, but the whole time the film was boring me and I could not see it. But then suddenly I wanted to watch some movies with Tom Cruise and I remembered about “Vanilla Sky”, just in case I took a cup of coffee and started watching.
This time, something seemed to flood into me, I penetrated him, began to empathize with the hero, the film reveals his whole story and she strongly hooked me. It seems that he initially everything is fine, but then life went downhill, but only “like”, because the plot smoothly leads to an extremely unexpected ending, you just think that the hero is crazy, he has schizophrenia, he gradually becomes a psychopath, but the ending prepares you a very beautiful and memorable ending.
There is nothing complicated in the narrative, but it is very spiritual, you are shown the problems that everyone can face, for various reasons, but here it is alone - love. Perhaps for most it is just silly or too banal, so the film probably did not receive high ratings from critics and viewers, because it is too jaded theme, but the themes are always the same, and the narrative is different, somewhere everything is too bad, somewhere too good, but here – the golden mean. We are shown the most ordinary love and it is the most pleasant thing in this film, you want to watch it because of it, but all good things come to an end.
The film is very good, but for me there was only one disadvantage - Cameron Diaz, anyway, everyone has their own opinion about the actors, but I do not like it in this regard, perhaps because of some other films about her, I can not say for sure.
I’ve added my favorite movies to my list.
In general, this film is a parable. That a man cannot be happy cannot be master of his own destiny as long as he is in conflict with himself. The hero of Tom Cruise follows his passions, bitterly repents, repeats his mistakes again, snatches anger at loved ones; freaks out when you need to gather all your strength and fight, and enthusiastically waves his fists after a fight. Alas, if you do not know what you want, who you love and why you live in the world, neither your father’s money nor divine power will help you. And even if you go to heaven, you turn it into hell, because hell is always with you, in your subconscious. The film is beautiful and spectacular, as spectacular as such a leisurely movie can be. The cast is quite stellar - in addition to Tom Cruise, Penelope Cruz, Kurt Russell, Cameron Diaz lit up here. Even brought Tilda Swinton to a cameo role. Everyone, in principle, played well, however, Diaz seemed to me a bit overplayed. However, her character the whole film was in permanent hysteria, so maybe the excess expression was in the subject. What the film should be reproached for is that it is clearly focused on a certain target audience, namely, intelligent girls. The glossy and glamorous life of the hero-majeure, handsome male characters, parties, stretched dating scenes, a certain touch of vintage (pictures, black and white films, cars of the 60-70s) - it is clear that the film is eager to please young humanities students who dream of a beautiful life. But glamour and vintage do not negate, however, a serious philosophical message - before making any important decision, you need to restore order in your head. Defeat your inner demons, and then it may turn out that external problems are not so terrible, or even illusory. And I must say that “Vanilla Sky” reveals this idea more realistically and in an adult way than, say, “The Matrix”. Yes, the film is secondary in some ways. And it’s not only that it’s a remake (with the advent of the Internet, I was generally surprised to realize that many Hollywood blockbusters are remakes of European or Asian films), but also that the very fantastic assumption borrowed from science fiction writer Philip Dick (I won’t say where, because there will be a spoiler). But to the credit of the filmmakers, it is worth admitting that the film is completely different. Summary: A glossy parable about the consequences of chaos in one single head. It is quite worthy of viewing, despite the obvious focus on the girl audience. 8 out of 10 Original
Escape from reality. A sense of eternal youth. Love and guilt.
And Penelope Cruz.
I can't talk about the plot - it's not fair to spoil so frankly with you if you haven't watched it. And that's your flaw.
With the actors, too, everything is clear: Tom Cruise, Cameron Diaz, Penelope Cruz, Kurt Russell. Beautiful, charismatic, with pleasant voices and depth of eyes, each of them requires increased attention, otherwise you will miss something. Just look in the original - the charm of Penelope's accent can't be missed.
Any frame is a photo for the competition, and the camera movements do not allow you to come off: circular passages, panoramas of the city and close-ups - everything alive, breathes and guides you according to the director's idea along the intertwined lines of the script, as confusing and immersing. Thank you, John Toll. And a sea of pictures, which hide details that are not noticeable from the first view - faces, colors, objects. A hint of replay. You’ll want to stop and watch, but don’t forget that the movie is a little over two hours long. Set aside half a day and put the kettle closer. Oh yes, and don't forget to find the soundtracks after - they'll be a bit on your playlist.
Admire and drown in the complexities of the plot, the colors of the sky, unexpected subtleties and eyes of the heroes. And think about it.
Die, die, rise again, and remain forever young.
The film is very philosophical, and it looks monotonous, slowly, but still with interest. Some moments-episodes do not seem so clear, but the main message of the tape is captured. In general, a special topic about dreams and reality is touched upon here, where it is not so easy to distinguish what is what actually is.
In my opinion, the peculiarity of the film is that it should be watched under the right mood and at a certain age, so that you can draw conclusions and appreciate many details and interesting events taking place. The acting is generally good, but I’ll highlight Tom Cruise. His main character throughout the time experiences a different range of emotions, it is interesting to watch him.
In general, the movie turned out to be special, if I had watched it earlier, it is unlikely that it would have gone so consciously and made you think. The film has a certain meaning, its own attractive atmosphere, as well as a special energy that makes it attractive.
I will not retell the plot of the film. ' Vanilla Sky' worth spending two hours of my life on it: the interesting (albeit somewhat protracted) plot and the message of the film I liked. The film makes an impression and makes the viewer think (each - about his), which means the director and his team coped with the task.
However, there is a point that has puzzled me.
The most important question to the love line of the protagonist David and his chosen one Sofia. As I understand it, the director’s idea is that Sofia should appear before the audience as a kind of ideal girl, at least for David. For me, the character was absolutely cardboard. It seems that she plays the role of furniture in the plot, in contrast to the heroes of Cruz and Cameron Diaz, which turned out to be more multidimensional. Kind of a girl ' not like everyone' but this not-as-all-twoness is very clumsy. At some point in the film, I even began to suspect that Sofia was just a figment of the protagonist’s imagination. And the behavior of her and main friend David (about him later) after the GG crash? The guy got into a fatal accident, survived a coma, his face is mutilated, and he is tormented by constant pain. Where was Sophia at that time? The film says that she allegedly wanted to come, but she was not allowed to see David. If there was love, would it stop her? And her behavior at the club? What is this nonsense about ' in the next life, when we will be cats'
My best friend was also not the best. Indirectly, he contributed to David's accident (after all, only he could tell Julie that she was only a fucking buddy for David, which caused the latter to blow off her roof). The behavior of a friend and Sofia in the club was the highest manifestation of selfishness towards David, it is not surprising that abandoned by loved ones on the street in a deranged state, he goes to the same company, and makes a certain choice.
David was really sorry, the last half hour of the film is kept in good tension. The film is not easy - for a romantic evening or friendly gatherings is unlikely to suit. However, it is worth watching.
The pamper of fate, the boy who too quickly and easily got a huge fortune, universal attention and the opportunity to fulfill any desire for money is punished by fate and deprived of everything, including the first true love, the only friend, his face and the opportunity to burn his life. Not new.
I’ve seen the intertwining of reality and illusion in many more interesting films. To the same "Games of the mind" "Vanilla sky" is very far away. Such a topic should be able to present so that it is interesting to watch. The same thing that was shown to the viewer is more like an unsuccessful editing of pieces of different films shot separately from each other. At the same time, perhaps, every viewer will take at least one thought from this film - you do not need to let anyone dig into your head, the brain is too complex structure, and any attempt to subdue it by force is doomed to failure.
I absolutely did not like the acting, or rather the eerie playfulness of Tom Cruise and the complete apathy of Penelope Cruz. I didn’t like Cameron Diaz’s character. No character causes empathy, but only irritation.
In addition, the final hopelessness leaves an unpleasant sediment in the soul. Think of the same Mind Games, the ending of the movie you cry over, you applaud standing up. The same film evokes only a bitter aftertaste and a feeling of complete hopelessness. Not to mention the crazy length of the story. I don't like movies like that.
I have long wanted to see this acclaimed film, with Tom Cruise, who disrupted the Oscars, where stars of the first magnitude play, such as Cameron Diaz, Penelope Cruz, Kurt Russell.
Not to say that I liked this movie very much. I expected more. The aftertaste remains a little weak, there is a feeling of dissatisfaction. In fact, this film is a two-hour bloated melodrama about the throwing of the main character David Ames between a dead mistress and a living dream girl.
The opening film for me was Penelope Cruz, I fell in love with this actress and her character. Charming, sweet, intelligent, sensitive, kind, understanding. In my opinion, Tom Cruise's hero, the boy David, is not worthy of her. That is why the writers of the script dressed the whole affair with her in the cover of a dream, in “half-sleep mode”. The idea with the corporation Al Yi, which was engaged in freezing the dead and their subsequent revival, and which, with the consent of customers, replayed dreams and wishes for them while they slept for decades in suspended animation, pleased. Of course, everything is fantastic, but shot well and beautifully.
Many moments are very long. Cameron Diaz immediately caused a sharp rejection, as did her heroine, who almost killed and disfigured the main character. It's a sweet, sweet hysterical. I hate women like that. The love line is too long, all the snotty smacks and nasty pink snotty cuddles. The line with the psychologist listening to the main character, liked. As a psychologist, I am always curious about psychologists who appear in movies. Tom Cruise's hero, the ever-tangled suffering lover Dave, isn't particularly catchy. Tom Cruise himself, by the way, has no complaints - he coped well with the role, which once again proves his versatility, that he and a secret agent can brilliantly play, and such an immature yellowish hero-lover. The movie didn't catch a drop. It happens – you watch a movie, it tears through, causes some emotions, there are some touching, heart-wrenching moments. There's nothing here! There is no wow effect, alas.
The film’s key thought and the only useful quote is “What’s your happiness?” “Live a real life”, and the fact that the main character made the choice to plunge into reality and not to live further in dreams half asleep – wise, but already somewhat beaten. Anyway, it is presented banal and beaten in this film. A one-time movie, just to see it. I don’t know why or why I’m going to review it a lot. It lasted more than 2 hours, in some places I wanted to scroll faster. Intrigue, drive and attention-grabbing were not everywhere.
Compared to the 99 francs seen recently, 99 francs certainly win. There was more drive, emotions, positive... A Vanilla Sky movie in places boring and not tearing. Yes, beautiful actors, beautiful music, a beautiful idea in the center of the plot, beautiful love, beautiful melodrama, beautiful kisses - but nothing more.

I write this review 2 minutes after I saw the picture to convey my impressions as much as my level of writing allows.
That bunch -- Tom Cruise, Penelope Cruz, Cameron Diaz and Kurt Russell -- was just gorgeous. It's probably that feeling when you believe what's happening on the screen 100%. Every emotion goes through and through, every cry and tears of the heroes are expressed through your essence. Excellent.
I started watching this movie in the original and without subtitles - how right I was. This 27-year-old Penelope will always be in me as the ideal of what a woman can be in her most beautiful years. Mysterious, charming, funny and impossibly cute. Her accent fell in love with all the words she said in the film. I’ve never heard anyone speak English in such a way that every word you say penetrates you more and more. It is beautiful and probably picture-perfect, without a single extra touch.
Tom is an amazing actor. He is talented and for his work deserves a leading role in such films. I can't express my emotions in life even by 40 percent of what he showed us. I just don’t understand how it is possible to live and penetrate into the character, life, emotions and soul. How can you be transformed beyond recognition, writhing with pain and unbearable feelings, and before that be a universal favorite and lucky.
Other actors are also in their seats, they complement and fill the picture with their play, no more, no less. I want you to see for yourself that Kurt and Cameron are not great people who do their job with love and professionalism.
2001. It's been 15 years, and the film blows, takes your feelings out, stirs you up like a concrete mixer and shakes you out. Back again.
What to do with it after watching? Sit for 2 minutes and enjoy what you got. And then live again. But living with those memories is like David in his new life.

The movie is slow. Cruz's acting work is in doubt. Yes, this is a copy 'Open your eyes'Amenabara. But the movie is fascinating. Primarily related story - before and after the accident. He makes you think about values, you worry about lost things with Cruz. The editing, music and playing of Penelope adds emotion and romanticism. Definitely - the film is cool 'beat' emotional.
I want to review it. From the first view, the impression will remain - ' what was it?' After the film remains persistent ambiguous ' aftertaste'.
You want to be impressed, look. You will not remain indifferent. Someone will not like ' the heaviness of European cinema ' You won't be indifferent. The movie is fascinating. . .
I always thought it was a romantic movie, just about love. Here are your hands to see.
It so happened that in the most interesting place had to stop the viewing. At that time, cinema seemed promising to me, even the confusion with masked faces, dreams-reality amazed, not annoyed. What a disappointment it was to watch the ending. But on such material it was possible to make a very decent deep film.
The main character - vanilla major, played by Tom Cruise, enjoys life. The turn-coup and our hero is already in another, quite unpleasant place and serious accusations are on it.
Trying to figure out what really happened, dreams and flashbacks, memories. It makes me feel a little sympathetic to the hero. The film did not spoil even the simplest hints of the director on the theme “from the sum, yes...”, “reality against dreams,” etc.
We see a broken man whom wealth has not endowed with inner strength. He suffers (as he can), rushes and depresses without end. But there was just a live, not very smart, however, sassy overgrown. And then reality caught up with him. Or not? The confusion begins, the faces tinker, the degree increases.
Suddenly the ending ruins everything. All the rudiments of meaning and simplified, in Hollywood, morality sweeps away completely by a wave of fiction. Stupid to the point of impossibility, saying, “Dude, you’ve got the NORM!” Open your eyes now! And the viewer is left to clap his eyes, wondering why he spent time on this.
Alas, alas.
Actors play. Cameron is good as a psychopath in love. But her character changes too quickly, do not believe in such changes. And in her love, too, can not believe, in appearance she is a calculating girl.
Penelope's just frozen. She failed to reflect the simplicity and spontaneity that are supposedly characteristic of the heroine. She just makes a face, smiles when necessary, portrays the ignorance of where the feelings came from, and the viewer is invited to believe that she herself is beautiful. She's not pretty. She even looks unattractive, although the actress is very handsome.
Where the love of the hero Tom Cruise is unclear at all. Where his game is also unclear. He flashes a smile at the right moments, and then a makeup artist and a mask work for him.
The best friend of the protagonist, judging by the plot, is needed only to bring pretty girls into the house and turn away from each other in a difficult moment.
There is no point in talking about the fantastic component of the plot, it is flawed and clumsy, in a word, hopeless.
It’s a happy beginning and such a stupid disappointing ending.

Vanilla Sky is a melodrama directed by Cameron Crowe. Alejandro Amenabar's film Open Your Eyes (1997) I didn't really want to see that movie. On IMDb - 6.90, on Rotten Tomatoes - 40%. But I became interested because of the cast: Tom Cruise, Penelope Cruz, Cameron Diaz, Kurt Russell and others. Plus intrigued the plot. What can I say? That was interesting.
“Desert streets symbolize loneliness. "
The life of David Ames (Tom Cruise) was a success: he had money, his own publishing house, an expensive car and an apartment in a respectable neighborhood of New York, a writer friend (Jason Lee) and Julianne’s girlfriend (Cameron Diaz), even enemies, in the face of seven managing his company, were also. So he lived, until one day he met the charming Sophia (Penelope Cruz) at a party. But David gets into an accident, he survived and woke up after a coma with a disabled face, which has to cover with an “aesthetic prosthesis”, and in fact – a simple mask. His life was a nightmare.
Thank you for something you don’t even know.
I haven’t seen the original, so I won’t compare the two films. Tom Cruise is one of my favorite actors and he’s great in this movie. Played 100 percent. I believed him, I felt sorry for his character. I empathized with him. All in all: Tom is good. Penelope Cruz - I don't remember much. She was boring to me as a character. Kurt Russell and Cameron Diaz were great! Diaz deservedly received a nomination for the Golden Globe.
- Why are you afraid of heights?
- Many are afraid of heights. But what really scares me is not the height, but the consequences of falling.
Musical accompaniment - I didn't remember even the song that won an Oscar nomination. The film has good camera work and strong directing.
In the end, we get a good and interesting film with gorgeous actors. I don’t understand why the movie has such low ratings, maybe it’s much worse against the background of the original, but I didn’t see that movie, so...

First, the plot itself is built very competently, keeps in suspense (yes, sometimes boring, but this makes the film serious) I want to watch it and understand what is happening at all. Now the main problem in many promising films is that they are deflated in the middle approximately, the plot is interesting, then there is a feeling that the director began to do this in scrap and wanted to finish the project. And here you are really worried about the hero and really in shock as he is.
Secondly, the meaning of the film, there are a lot of eternal truths raised, a lot of questions that bother any non-stupid person.
For example, phrases like mortality are a cure for boredom. Isn’t it that people are also deflated after 30, and many earlier, live on autopilot for the last 40 years of their lives, and they are boring? Yes, they simply do not control their lives obey the system, they generally forget about their dreams, about what they were at the age of 18, what they wanted then.
For me, this movie is like a cold shower. For a couple of minutes, look at my current life and think about what I am doing at all, why I need it, and what I even wanted before, why I betray myself to the one who wanted so much once.
It is betrayal, because it was then that we wanted something from the heart, without any doubt, without fear (and if it does not work), and then you just shut up all sorts of desires, say that it is not real and that in the end - an unhappy person who does not want anything at all.
Or sweetness is not so sweet without bitterness. . well, life is not an eternal holiday, and the one who has it is this - it is most often a vacuum, a dummy, burns through his life and knows nothing about real life. In this life there is a place for joy and suffering, one cannot be without the other, and it is through all this that a person learns wisdom and develops internally.
Some majors I think just need such lessons, it's for their benefit, that's how they become people, well, or if everything goes ' smooth ' we have finished schmo.
The subject of the choice: confused, got into the wrong car, that's the consequences of the choice you made. I don’t know what guided the main character in those moments, either pity, or the prospect of having an easy and pleasant time, but it was frivolous. Many more problems arise: fear of reality, unwillingness to take responsibility for their lives, weakness, not being able to find the strength to live.
And the theme of love, of course, I enjoy the romantic line, it is the main one for me personally. If a person is capable of this feeling, then everything is not lost with him. So, true values still create some resonance in his soul, awaken. Even if this love is unrequited, for example, but the happiness of knowing and experiencing it, then he lived for good reason.
In the next world, no one will take away iPhones, apartments and cars, for which he is killed and extolls this all his life. And without all that, who is he?
All right.
I missed a lot of things, there was still a lot of emotions, but I don’t know how to express it in words, I just feel.
As soon as one of the European directors makes a film that shows itself at the box office with dignity and collects a good budget, not due to special effects, but due to the fact that the film is really good, then Hollywood can no longer get rid of the idea that, perhaps, a picture was released all over the world, warmly received by the ordinary public and film critics. How is it, because by and large it is in American films heroes often engaged in the salvation of all mankind, they have the purest and sincere love, they have the most incredible adventures, they have the most beautiful worlds and so on. The same story happened with the film “Open your eyes” directed by Alejandro Amenabar.
A bright and snow-white smile, most of the shares of the publishing house on their hands, spacious apartments, an expensive car and much more, which makes the life of a successful handsome and favorite of women David (Tom Cruise) the cause of envy in many men. He doesn’t take his job seriously, although he understands how important it is in his life. Selfishness occupies a significant space of his inner world, he can easily make a new acquaintance with any girl, but he still likes a bachelor life or at least his girlfriend Julie (Cameron Diaz) is always able to please him. He does not treat his friends badly, at all, and his habits do not include rude attitude to his beautiful girlfriend. It’s just that at some point he doesn’t have time to understand or understand their relationship. After all, sleeping with her is one thing, but not to show in time that he loves her, he thinks that this is not such a significant fact against the background of their love games. Although on the other hand, Julie herself is even disgusted by the very word marriage and try to understand what she wants. The main character was a little tired of such a life, so he stopped noticing what influence his behavior, far from ideal, has on relatives and friends. One of these actions, which gives rise to a series of unpleasant events and turned out to be unnoticed by David himself, entails serious consequences. After that, the whole life of an energetic and young handsome man goes downhill.
David almost does not sympathize with the viewer, as he does not behave quite appropriately. Although this is not even the representative of the elite society, which we are used to seeing in real life, experiencing a sense of anger towards them. He fits this type by half, because, again, his imposing behavior is not always predictable, although for the most part we see him as a harmless good man. But, now he can be good-natured and friendly, and the next second he is able to shout or lash out at his interlocutor. His character traits were partly to blame for what happened to him. And yet, the most indignation is caused by an angry Julie, who appears in the image of an offended person whose feelings were affected. In short, the wrong David is running into.
Half of the film is pure melodrama. Forgetting about Julie, our hero switched to Sofia (Penelope Cruz), who came to congratulate him on his birthday. Only he was happy with this acquaintance, Julie immediately appeared and decided to test David’s health for strength. A terrible mix of real life episodes and lucid dreams after the middle turns the film into an extremely confusing thriller. But if you look closely, you can see a hint that directly indicates that our hero is in a dream at this moment. But this is only at first, and then try, guess - where the truth, and where the dream. Not for nothing did David engage psychologist McCabe (Kurt Russell). Despite the porridge, which includes episodes from the real life of the hero and the world of Morpheus, where David often stays, everything is chewed up in detail in the very finale of the film. It is becoming really interesting to follow the developments. And as for the difference between the original director Alejandro Amenebar "Open your eyes" and the remake, in each of these two projects, the viewer will find something different.

I watched the movie Vanilla Sky for the first time. It's very strange knowing me, I thought as a kid I'd revisited all the masterpieces of 90s Hollywood, but it turned out not! On the one hand, the feeling is, how come I've lived so long in ignorance that there's such a masterpiece. On the other hand, I subconsciously want such films to remain “for later”, simply because now this is not done, but I want to be like the first time.
I remember the poster of that movie when it first came out. Judging by the title and photo of "Cruz-Diaz-Cruz", I was sure that this is a kind of romantic (and maybe erotic) melodrama about a threesome, and maybe even lesbian (the name of it is some lesbian "Vanilla Sky"), in short, I did not suspect that this is a fantasy in the spirit of "Remember everything" or "6 days" with Arnold Schwarzenegger. And it is very strange that Kinopoisk does not show them in the list of “similar paintings”, although they are clearly the closest. Moreover, it seems to me that the plot is borrowed a little from them, or maybe there was just such a trend then. From the list of proposed films, it rather reminded me of “Game” with Michael Douglas: all the same by the end mixed in a crazy vinaigrette, where the hero seems that he is crazy and we have with him.
The film tells us about the classic successful young handsome who has everything, and how a car accident destroys it all overnight. One of the most painful questions about weakness and beauty is raised. How important is your appearance to the world? And what happens when she doesn't. I was in terrible pain for the main character. Tom Cruise is so touching and defenseless as a teenager in this role that I would give him an Oscar, but of course he doesn't. But for some reason, Cameron Diaz was nominated for a Golden Globe, although besides the fact that she laughs stupidly throughout the film, I did not notice anything.
Back to the movie. The main character experiences such mental torments as: jealousy, trampled self-esteem, distrust of his best friend and love for him at the same time, fear of losing him and the girl he fell in love with, betrayal, understanding that he is not needed by anyone being a freak... The scene in the club, I consider the strongest: “I have no big task now: to shade your beauty” – this phrase cuts a knife into the brain and gives a rich food for thought, like the whole film.
The movie left me with the same deep feelings as Spielberg’s Artificial Intelligence. This picture, when viewed, can be said: “the soul works”. It will be close to everyone, because in each of us lives a thousand unrealizable dreams and each has its own “vanilla sky”. This movie is worth seeing!

The film, which was underestimated at home, we found many fans. The film is a remake of the film “Open your eyes”, which was shot by Alejandro Amenabar, maybe because of this in the West “Vanilla Sky” received not high ratings, critics and viewers. In general, the phrase “Open your eyes” is probably the key to the film.
The plot of the film turned out to be really fascinating and confusing, as a Russian can say a plot worthy of Dostoevsky. David is young, handsome, rich, enjoying life, succeeding in all things. He finds himself in a tragic situation, through no fault of his own, from which there is no easy way out. I’m not going to describe the film anymore, it doesn’t make any sense. For me, what is important in this film is that the idea that there is not much time spent with a person, that is not long-term spiritual intimacy, is more for the hero than a whole life with other people. The film is about true friendship. The topics of the moral stability of the main, his ability to be strong no matter what.
The film is multifaceted on the one hand, you feel the atmosphere of a painful nightmare, on the other you are surprised by the beauty that you see. I remember very well the scene in the elevator, in which David climbs to the roof of the building against the background of vanilla clouds, under a magnificent soundtrack.

The beginning of the film is intriguing and exciting. A guy who has everything, only his heart is cold. But, suddenly, it appears - the very simplicity and naturalness, fascinating and simple. He is interested, surprised, in a word, struck in the heart. Sooner or later, love happens to everyone. But here's the bad luck: an unstable ex-girlfriend - a sharp turn - life turns over.
Before that, everything was clear, after a tough psychological thriller begins, where you yourself after a while cease to understand where reality is, where the subconscious works.
Honestly, I was able to watch only thanks to the brilliant play of Tom Cruz, Kurt Russell and Jason Lee. In their performance, even the intricate psychiatrist-patient dialogues sounded tense and spectacular. But Penelope in this film was not impressed at all, some kind of gray mouse with a hint of independence. I didn't understand her playing here, as she has very strong and vivid roles in the subsequent ('Vicky, Cristina, Barcelona', 'Elegy' and absolutely heartbreaking 'Don't go').
I didn’t like the film – I didn’t understand it, I might need to watch it again, but I can’t stand it. In the end, honestly felt relief along with the main character when he burst into the vanilla sky to his obsession in the image of Penelope Cruz.

"Vanilla Sky" is a stunningly beautiful romantic Hollywood remake of the Spanish film "Open Your Eyes", directed and written by Alejandro Amenabar. It was released in 2001, four years after its Spanish brother. A slightly modified plot and played the main female role in the first film Penelope Cruz moved to “Vanilla Sky”, directed by Oscar winner Cameron Crowe. The company of Penelope Cruz consisted of such famous actors as Tom Cruise, Cameron Diaz, Kurt Russell and Jason Lee. And to make this splendor complete, Sir Paul McCartney personally composed and performed the song "Vanilla Sky" specially for this tape.
Short story:
Beautiful and successful in everything David Ames (Tom Cruise) lives a luxurious life, owns his own publishing house in New York, bathes in the arms of beauty Julianne (Cameron Diaz). One day at one of the parties organized by David, his friend Brian Shelby brings his charming friend Sophia, who immediately drives David crazy, and he can’t think about anyone else now. Mentally unstable Julianne, realizing that she is now “overboard”, offering one day to let David down in his car, decides to commit suicide with him. At full speed, her car flies off the bridge. After the accident, the survivor discovers that his face is mutilated. He falls into a terrible depression, as he can no longer live as before. Drinking from grief and falling asleep on the sidewalk, David awakens from the fact that Sofia wakes him more than affectionately: here she is, his dream comes true. It's like a dream. Everything goes “as usual”, and the face, it turns out, is easy to fix. That’s just why the hero suddenly finds himself in a prison cell, talking with a psychiatrist (Kurt Russell).
The tragedy of the picture borders on romance, because the plot tells how the girl managed to love a man disfigured from the outside and from the inside, how the once successful and rich protagonist meets true love and after serious trials revises his life values. The story of how a person tries to escape from reality, from horror, from his ugliness. But you can't run away from yourself. Something like a fairy tale or a dream, is it a good dream or a nightmare?
Play of actors is certainly on top. One of my favorite actors, Tom Cruise, showed all the facets of his undisputed talent, playing with the turbulent and lively emotions of his changeable hero David. Especially we can note the perfectly conveyed facial expressions in the disfigured face of his character. Interestingly, the role of the beautiful Sofia here wonderfully played Penelope Cruz, shone in the same image and in the original film. A small but bright role in her usual role as a bitchy and seductive blonde Julianne was performed by Cameron Diaz. The other actors also played at the level, and for that, thank you very much.
“Vanilla Sky” has everything: love, suffering, intrigue, dynamic plot, drama and fiction. This mixture was good for the picture, as individually all this, in my opinion, would look somewhat banal.
I like this movie, its deep meaning can not leave indifferent. The movie makes you think. Think about love, that our dreams may end up being much worse than what we have now. Makes you appreciate reality more because dreams can turn into nightmares. A nightmare that will never end.
Forget everything you know about life and just open your eyes.
8.5 out of 10
After watching the first hour of the film, you involuntarily wonder: “Where is the fantasy?” To some extent, you are even disappointed with the slow and “tight” development of the plot. But then events begin to unfold rapidly, and the finale is amazing. This is one of the few films whose ending is simply impossible to predict.
What’s interesting is that the film continues to be relevant in 2015. If you describe the essence of a fantastic idea, it will be a frank spoiler. So, perhaps, I will remain silent so as not to spoil the impression of those who have not yet seen this movie.
Reading negative reviews, involuntarily smile: so funny and ridiculous. The finale of the film puts everything “on shelves”, but, nevertheless, leaves room for thought.
This film is from the category of those that can be revised and find more and more nuances. Vanilla Sky contains 428 reminiscences – references to other works of literature, cinema, painting and music. It is impossible to find them all in one view.
The film is psychologically heavy, as it touches on human fears, phobias, desires and fantasies. He is close to The Matrix and the underappreciated film 13th Floor. Perhaps out of 428 references, there are reminiscences to these films.
