Thomas Hardy’s novel of the same name is liked for its content, dialogue and description of the characters’ feelings. But this movie disappointed me. Some scenes are unreasonably long, some on the contrary, unacceptably brief and inconsequential. Cinematography is sometimes just stupid. You could blame it on the fact that we are spoiled with modern cameras and an abundance of effects and techniques. However, there are many examples of earlier films with impeccable camera work indoors and outdoors. The only two spectacular moments are the thunderstorm scene and the sea scene.
As far as acting is concerned, I don't believe anyone except Liddy's maid. Let’s pay tribute to Batsheba Everdeen (Julie Christie) – a really wayward girl, full of contradictions and feelings. But this praise is over – neither romantic moments nor dramatic are not felt by anyone and do not cause the slightest emotional response.
If you advise to watch this film, it is only "for a tick" fans of Gardy's work.
