Is Godard's style conquering America? I've already conquered. Who said American filmmakers didn't admire Godard and his revolutionary Filipinos?
Haskell Wexler dedicated a whole film to the French master. The way he portrayed the riots in the U.S. correlates well with the Yearr weekend. And let the author not go into philosophical conversations and try to bring everything to the absurd. He was just much more interested in street battles - almost chronic footage of clashes between people and the police.
And the story? Who wants him? The hero of Robert Forrester is a journalist and spends his whole life in motion. He chats with colleagues, has fun with his girlfriend or just stands in the stadium - all the same. He tries to capture this elusive sense of freedom. A permanently moving camera tries to grab as much specifics as possible. Protest, street, students, Godard, contempt... Forrester ...
What else can I say? I think that it is in comparison with this simple film that Bertolucci’s Dreamers turns out to be a true masterpiece, because the Italian showed just the inner, spiritual driving force of the rebels. And Wexler showed only external stories. And a lot of it.
