A movie about real people. What is true courage and patriotism? In my opinion, the greatest courage is self-sacrifice for the sake of one’s ideas and homeland, even when the chances of victory are slim. Only true heroes can be called those men led by George E. Dixon, who made up the third crew after the terrible death of the first two crews of this floating coffin, mistakenly called the submarine "Hunley". All these people were volunteers who knew they were likely to die, but their sacrifice might help their hometown and lift the Severyan blockade. And they did everything they could.
In our time of historical culpritism in the United States, such films will not be made. But almost all the characters of the film - real characters, even the story with the watch of the hero Assante - real. Sutherland plays the small but important role of General Beauregard, the man who takes responsibility for the tragedy. Especially good is the scene at the beginning of the film, during the general panic when he sings the famous song "The Bonnie Blue Flag". By the way, the monument to the general was demolished back in 2017 by “thankful” descendants.
The film is really touching, with great actors and skillfully shown drama of ordinary people, while surprisingly well conveys the real story without major assumptions.
9 out of 10
Since this is the first submarine in the world, there are no more films, and probably will not be in the coming years for sure.
