Midwifery school, murder investigation and love? . The premature death of her mother forces a young girl named Hesa to go to the "maternity home" of the city of Marburg. Before her death, her mother sends her to her old friend, who must teach the girl everything she did not have time to teach herself.
But when the girl arrives in the city, everything goes wrong. Elgin, the same old friend, refuses to help the girl and sends her to the “maternity hospital”, in which their laws reign. The girl has to put up with the horrors she sees and learn the craft of obstetrics from Professor Kilian to achieve her goal. She is intelligent and curious, and immediately you can see that she will make a good midwife. She finds a new friend of Lotte and meets anatomy doctor Clemens Heuser, who shows sympathy for her. Against the background of all this, Hesa wants to learn about the past of her mother, which Elgin can tell her, and in the city there are mysterious murders of people.
The shown realities horrify not only Hes, but also the viewer himself, who sympathizes with the women who found themselves in the “maternity home” and allowed themselves to conduct ostentatious lessons. On the one hand, Professor Kylian sought to educate students visually, to give them knowledge so that they could save mothers with children, but on the other hand, at what cost? At the cost of the infernal pain of pregnant women, one of whom escaped after giving birth? Ambiguous question. From the point of view of science, professors can be justified 100%, but from the point of view of humanity. He has no excuse.
I liked the acting. Gesa is a girl who is full of love for people and is ready to help everyone. Her friend Lotte, a promising midwife, but broken by envy of Hes, who closed her eyes to reality and forced her to behave like a previous domestic midwife. Lotte has his own tragedy and can be understood.
Elgin, who keeps more than one secret and lives with guilt. She looks like Gesa. She must have been the same at her age. But time hardened her. Yes, she helps everyone who came and asked for help, but at the same time she shows some indifference. And with the appearance of Hesa in the city, the feelings that tear her apart only intensify and push her to the end of the story that happened before the birth of Hesa.
I liked the film as a whole. Dirty German town, the “birthing house”, inside which you do not want anyone to be. Atmospheric scenes.
Only murder scenes were seen as foreign in this film. I didn't like them at all! The way they were shown knocked down the whole atmosphere of the film. Some kind of red background, music... No, that's what I didn't like. In general, these murders seemed unnecessary. Without them, the film would have been dramatic and interesting. But apparently, the killer decided to bring for spiciness. But to me, I had to think of him a little differently, so that his story would be more intertwined with the main story, and so... at times I had the feeling that this killer was forgotten and he wasn’t in the movie at all. But that's my opinion. I knew from the beginning who the killer was. It's all too obvious.
