The most unsuccessful musical of the recognized master Of the dozen musicals directed by Charles Walters that I managed to see (Easter Parade, Summer Tour, High Society, etc.), this film is the weakest in both cinematic and musical-dance terms. In my opinion, one of the key problems is the lack of the necessary human magnetism between the three key stars of the film - comedian Red Skelton, singer-swimmer Esther Williams and other acclaimed master of musicals Howard Keel.
Skelton's jokes, with rare exceptions, are rather idiotic even by modern standards. Williams does not swim here much, and she can hardly play outside the pool. Keel is more likely to be serving a number, working out his fee. The only ray of light in this dull realm is the appearance of Anne Miller with a couple of passing but cute musical numbers.
In general, this film is, in my opinion, the biggest failure of all the musical projects of a quite decent director and I will only get Miller’s numbers in the collection.
