“I love the forest. It is possible to hide the Romans with it. The story of the Battle of Teutoburg Forest is small, but every historian or history buff has heard of it. On the topic of the confrontation between the Germanic tribes and the Romans in those years, few films were shot, and this, perhaps, is either the only or one of a small number of films, when watching which you can plunge into the very terrible Teutoburg forest for the Romans, where they should not go.
The film itself is 1967, so it is a bit difficult to evaluate it from 2019.
Italy, Germany and Yugoslavia participated in the shooting - countries in which cinema did not develop too brightly, undulatingly, and this film is rather a film of category B. Not translated into dubbing, the quality of the shooting speaks for itself.
Many scenes look cheap, not as large-scale as they could or usually filmed battles in peplums and earlier years of release.
But I am glad that the creators are well approached to the costumes of the heroes. Yes, sometimes it's a little funny that the Romans wear pants, and the Germanic warriors are more like Siberian hunters or some Central Asian nomads because of their hats. But in general, this is not very noticeable.
The anutrage in the historical film is also well shown. There are scenery in the video of houses, camps, villages of Germans, tents, horses involved, not the worst battle scenes. You can see they tried.
I would like to thank those responsible for the music in this film. Melodies are not memorable, but the spirit of the Roman Empire convey, there are many of them, they are well, not pointlessly inserted, so because of the music, this short film is pleasant to watch.
If we talk about actors, there is no one to praise for acting, because it is not fantastic, but tolerable. Arminius was chosen as a typical German (bright-eyed blonde, with a serious face, middle-aged), well, and the rest will pass for classic characters - Italians of typical appearance, pretty girls, centurion Urius, not like a Roman, but as a European warrior - very remarkable.
The film corresponds to this genre. He's more action, adventure and drama. As for historicity, we make a discount on budgets, shooting time and country of filming. However, what caught the eye is the Emperor Augustus Ocativian (historically it was him), but it seems that in the film it is not he, and maybe even Julius Caesar, because in the film he talks about the troops of Gnaeus Pompey and Mark Antony. Well, somehow it would be illogical Okatavian to make a reference to the contemporaries of his predecessor, in my opinion.
Overall, the film is good and the good news is that it is not long. So looking at it in one eye, doing something along the way, is very fun. Some scenes can be seen with serious viewing.
In my subjective opinion, I put points for music, costumes and scenery, hero actors and the chosen plot.
