Oddly enough for many, my acquaintance with the universe of turtles began, you can say, with this crossover, and also with the famous tortoises of the 1990 film with real actors. When I was a kid, I didn't see turtles very much (the '87 sample of course) and I wasn't a big fan. After the crossover, I watched the entire series in 2003 and, in my opinion, this is the best embodiment of this superhero universe that has been invented so far.
I heard about this film as a vivid parody of the whole turtle "theme" and decided that it was worth watching. I have no regrets.
On the pluses. I immediately liked the beginning of the film, the whole idea of turtles from different worlds, with different drawings, even, it seems, with its original animation. The plot, although quite simple, but bright and, most importantly, logical for this setting. Returns long buried four of their main enemy - Shredder-morning (stress on o) and of course is taken for the old. He is extremely angry and eager to take revenge on those whose fault he was locked on an icy asteroid. Of course, the whole confrontation was not without the no less well-known enemy of the turtles - Khan, a dull but extremely dangerous bandit-rocking and his gang of purple dragons. And in connection with the mutation, he again had to join his old master, whom he no longer considered as such (who watched the series, will understand what it is). Turtles of the 2003 model are shown in the same way as in the series - serious, but not too boring guys, ready to accept any challenge from absolutely any evil, and end it. I’m glad that the crossover thought to leave more or less original type of turtles – i.e. without pupils, which in my opinion, looked very flawed in the seventh season (the absence of pupils is such a deliberate assumption to give style, do not think that turtles without pupils, um, should be “blind”). The original heroes are the four samurai, almost as evil and ruthless to their enemies as Shredder himself. Finally, the idea of a multiverse is successfully played out in connection with the crazy Schredder-morning plan. Chorell himself is shown flawlessly, a ruthless recidivist with whom peace cannot be negotiated, for the sake of revenge he is ready to destroy the entire multiverse, including Karai’s daughter and himself.
The disadvantages of the crossover are also obvious. Here in the reviews already wrote that the characters of the 80s clearly offended. This is true; fans of the new series clearly worked on the crossover, so the old heroes and villains are shown frankly funny. Turtles, at least not yet, because in the end they take things seriously. But the old Shredder (and Kreng) is in trouble; if in the series he was defeated by the turtles, then here he is completely brainless, like Bebop and Rocksteady. It's funny, but if I were the creators, I'd give him and Kreng a better role. Of course, the characters of all the characters in one film cannot be revealed, but I also want to note how little April from the 80s and the original “black and white” were shown. Shredder. The latter was stupidly “leaked”, which is unacceptable for a villain of such rank. The jokes, for the most part, are really funny, but because of them, the film sometimes seems too frivolous.
I liked the movie anyway, because it worked. The scene of the final battle with Shredder has been revisited many times, especially the encounter of old comic turtles with the morning when they challenge him.
As a result, my assessment of the crossover is honest
It is immediately clear that the allegedly trou-fans, who praised the film and gave him high marks, either very poorly remember the 1987 series, or did not appreciate, or did not see it at all.
What an amazing idea it was to bring together the two universes of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, so similar and so different – a silly, joyful, kind, action-mischievous series of the 80s, designed for children, and a tough, spectacular and much more serious series of 2003, designed for teenagers. Here, at the end, even the first and most canonical turtles appear – from the comics “Mirage”, gloomy, black and white and brutal, designed even for adults ... and here are three teams of turtles united against common enemies.
Just think about what a great opportunity it was to compare different versions! What an opportunity for jokes, for plot twists, for the interaction of eight (even twelve) different, created with different goals and different people, but still similar characters. And for nostalgic, to whom I include myself, for joyful hopes, it is enough that our old pets, for whom we supported as a child, are again on the screen – our brave, dexterous, funny turtles, our Schroeder, Kring, Roxsteady and Bebop at the Technodrome! Tell me, isn't that cool?
It should be noted that the universe of turtles, to which I relate the most affectionately is the series of the 87th year, the series, as I said, is stupid, thrashy, but damn charming. Yes, he was more honed to comedy, full of assumptions, and an adult to watch it is much more difficult than a child. However, the stupidity there was, in fact, deftly controlled, the drive, humor, action and relative seriousness were balanced very well and really kept the attention, and the characters, for all their simplicity and childishness, were cute, clear and natural enough that the characters were interesting to follow and that they wanted to empathize.
And how much has changed this conditional, but alive and cute universe in the crossover and how revealing this change!
Where did Leonardo’s seriousness and responsibility, his leadership and courage go? Where is Donatello's inquisitive half-mad mind, where is his selfless love of science? Where are Raphael's sarcastic pranks? Where is Michelangelo’s kindness and innocence, his charming carefree, stupid gaiety?
Who are these brainless crooks-dolbodyatli, who do not differ in anything but the color of the bandana, and can not think about anything except "gygygygygygygygy"? "Phahahahaha, go get pizza, phahahahaha, tickle!" (yes, yes, tickle!) - that's all their function in this crossover.
Never, you understand me, has there ever been a time when the Turtles with the whole team crooked and groaned stupidly instead of solving problems or throwing their guns away and running away from danger, never! Turtles always fought to the last and knew perfectly well that they were responsible, that their enemies were really dangerous and people had to be saved from them. Yes, they gladly had fun in battle, joked and childishly teased enemies, they could be too frivolous, but at the same time they threw themselves seriously and did not calm down until they realized that everything was fine, otherwise we would not love them.
What happened to Schroeder? Who is this cowardly incompetent thing that is cut off at one stroke and has no elementary concepts of honor and self-worth? An insidious, cunning, ruthless ninja master, devoured by a lust for power... where did he go? Do you really think that Schroeder and Kreng would let some strangers treat themselves that way and would be so easily turned over by the Technodrome if they tried to take him away from them? And what would they do about it?
Let the crossover mock the stupidity of the old show; well, it was there! To laugh at her is a good thing, and I fully support her. But to put everything as if there was nothing in the old series except stupidity? Guys, if the old series was really the way you showed it here, then turtles as superheroes no one would remember!
And at the same time - could it be somehow, just for honesty, for symmetry, to bully the 2003 series?! Now. What heresy. What's there to laugh at? He's good. Right. Cool. Not that it's an idiotic 87th thing. And even more so – 2003 turtles can be serious, and 87 turtles are strictly forbidden. For some reason, only the heroes of the new universe experience normal human emotions. It is the enemies of the new universe who do all the work while the old villains get confused under their feet. It is the heroes from the new universe who are worried about friends, act boldly and decisively, read touching speeches. The old ones aren't even close. "We save April at least once a day!" and the hallucinogenic fight with children's toys (one of the most shameful movie scenes I've ever seen) is the pinnacle of their courage and sacrifice. And the tone of all this is next.
Turtles 2003 - this is a steering wheel, this is cool! And the turtles of 1987 are just that, nonsense, clowning. And they have no character! They crook, laugh like morons, tickle and talk about pizza - that's all the characters for you. How shameful, how stupid! They're pissed off! Oh, they've got the beads on their belts, the insignia van and the slow airship -- oh, rusunimagu, that's hilarious! And Schroeder and Kreng they have - suckers and weaklings, outsiders, comedians of some kind, too, are crooked and with one blow knocked out! Bullshit, not enemies! And the Technodrome is their trough! And what a wretched technique... not like 2003! Not like Schroeder-Ch'rell, just look at how powerful and cool he is! This is a real threat, this is scary! And April 87th -- she washes cars, why would she want that jumpsuit? Old New York is so strange! Bananas run through the streets and all that. Not like the new April and Casey! They are normal!
Seriously, guys, I've seen so many crappy adaptations that completely destroyed the good that was in the source, but this film is a new experience for me. And I can’t imagine that there’s a movie in the franchise that was consciously made just for a stupid and vile mockery of one of its most beloved incarnations.
I was very excited to see Turtles Forever, because I grew up with the adventures of these characters. The cartoon will be, first of all, interesting precisely from the point of view of nostalgic thoughts. And it sounds paradoxical, because, in other words, the younger generation will probably just pass by this adventure, and it will interest those viewers who, like me, clearly associate the adventures of green heroes with the era of the 90s. The fuse of two authors-enthusiasts of comics gave children of several generations a whole new universe, and millions of boys in absentia fell in love with pizza, often not fully understanding what this dish is.
From a visual point of view, this is a graphic tribute to the original series, and given the heritage I mentioned above, what is happening on the screen is perceived kindly and I do not even want to compare with modern achievements in the field of digital animation. The plot idea with the combination of parallel dimensions made it possible to place different visual concepts in one frame, which you immediately pay attention to. At the same time, some expressiveness of shades or effects should not be expected - nothing fundamentally new cartoon does not offer. Separately, it is worth noting the work with animation of the movement of characters, of which there is a real variety.
The writers decided not to follow the path of least resistance and once again retell a familiar story. The concept of multiverses was chosen, which is used to breathe life into the stagnant series and provide a shake-up of the audience’s emotions. In case one team of heroes and villains gets bored, there are others. This is a kind of tribute to the long and rich history of the franchise, especially notes of nostalgia are triggered by references to the first black and white graphic comics. The plot itself cannot be called exceptionally exciting, but it is rich and does not let you get bored. Personally, I expected more, but the ornateness of such a project does not suit the face.
Also pleased with the appearance of other minor characters, including the opponents of the Turtles. And the familiar musical accompaniment very quickly takes the place of a song motif in the head. The available duration is enough just enough to get tired of what is happening, so the timing of 80 minutes I consider optimal. I will be interested to see the sequel in exactly the same format if it comes to light.
7.5 out of 10
I, as a person who watched the full Turtles of 1987 and Turtles of 2003, was surprised to learn about this crossover.
The connection of these two universes seemed to me something unimaginable, but, nevertheless, the authors took this step. I will say only one thing-received a masterpiece, and I was not mistaken, writing a word with a capital letter in the middle of a sentence! The connection of turtles of different universes was more than successful! I’ll admit I’m a fan of the 2003 Turtles, because it’s more serious in the plot, drawn (not even humiliating seasons 6 and 7) and with more pronounced characters. And the turtles of 1987 are childish, funny, fun, but their jokes, at times, are very boring with watching each episode of the next season.
But this crossover-he did his job right, with the sense and with the arrangement! If the credits were not the authors, but the turtles themselves, then the first place in the credits would undoubtedly be for the turtles of 2003, because all the main action takes place in their world and behind their leadership, in the second place - the turtles of 1987, because their humor and optimism in this cartoon look so cool, as it did not look like in any of the episodes of the 10 seasons of the animated series about them, and the rest of the places will not even be distributed - and without me everything will be distributed.
I want to talk about the villains separately. Shredder morning, in the usual manner, sinister and thirsty for death turtles irrevocably, not knowing any jokes and fun, a serious alien, to sum up. Shredder 1987 and, in the same boat with him, Krang, produce such a furror of laughter and fun with their inadequate actions and words that you can not even describe. “My name is Karai and I am his daughter.” – “Family similarity is not very noticeable” just throws into wild laughter!
I won’t say anything about the turtles from the comics, because they are all equally evil there, just like the turtles of 87 are equally funny – it’s a bit boring to see it.
Actions in the cartoon occur sequentially, in their places, the finale is expectedly cool!
This is for all Ninja Turtle fans!!
P.S. Rafael 2003 and Donatello 2003 are my favorite characters!!!
It’s impossible to deny the fact that “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” became cult heroes for those whose childhood fell in the late 80s and early 90s. Personally, I went wild from turtles to drool! Drawing them, collecting comics, running to the neighbor to watch the series, who already had a color TV (I had only black and white) and it seemed incredible happiness to see them in all colors. Fanaticism even reached the point that he recorded all the series of the cartoon on audio cassettes (the writing video was an unthinkable luxury) and then overdried 10 times. The first full-length film of 1990 is an extreme rarity, which came through incredible efforts.
It is strange that such popular characters have almost not been filmed until recently and it is a pity that they did in the heyday of digital technology it is so bad. One kind of new turtles indirectly authored by Michael Bay is already disgusting and most importantly does not deliver the fan that in childhood. And so he began to look for nostalgia in the past and after turning to the filmography of his favorite green heroes, he found a full-length cartoon in 2009 called Turtles Forever. And I must admit – this is the most amazing story about them that I have ever seen!
The crazy fantasy of merging key versions of the Turtles universes into one animated film is super! Turtles of the series 2003 meet their counterparts from 1987, and then even with black and white ancestors from the 84th year. Not only that this is already a wild portion of fan service, but also the cartoon is infinitely full of humor and self-irony. “Green mutants” from the 87th are mercilessly full of stupidity and sprinkle on the occasion and no the word “pizza”, constantly taunting their colleagues from modernity. Not far behind are their counterparts – the Schroeder of the 80s and its 2003 technoversion, especially when the latter breaks old CRT monitors during the total repair of the Technodrome, putting modern plasmas instead.
Turtles Forever is a unique cartoon of its kind. For an hour with a little screen time, the authors manage to give just an incredible amount of pleasant emotions - this is nostalgia, delight, tenderness, and a portion of excellent humor. And, perhaps, the most important thing is to give again that distant feeling of carelessness and desire to shout along with the turtles the famous cry: “Kawabang!”
Once upon a time, I had to get up to school half an hour earlier, just not to miss my favorite TV series, in which four turtles and one rat - all anthropomorphic in the most impossible way - fought evil. And there was a rare day when the TV did not turn on on the cherished button. Time has passed, it seems that the days of fascination with such cartoons have ended. But one person suddenly advised to watch "Teenage Turtles Forever" with the words that the feature was made for old fans of the series. So, why not take the time off?
The turtles were sitting at home, not touching anyone, when suddenly it is reported that four humanoid reptiles were seen on the surface. How is that possible? To find out, our quartet goes on a reconnaissance mission and ... meets themselves. More specifically, twins from another universe. And not only the turtles met each other, but also different versions of the Shredders along with their closest associates, and the characters of the characters were also not completely identical, which eventually led to terrible consequences. After all, one alien (a later serial version of Shredder) wanted to do away with the forefathers of all turtles, and it does not matter that this can lead to the erasure of everything.
Parallel realities are obviously different series / comics, released at different times, including all spin-offs, full-length works and almost fan fiction. A fan will immediately know the difference, understand the creators’ plan and find a thousand reasons to laugh at the “turtle” stamps. The authors love and do not forget the fans.
As the late Raphael put it, “Now we have 5 Mikey,” i.e. the turtles of the 80s/90s were not serious at all, which was not just about the always slightly inadequate Michelangelo. Then they were all ready to exchange common sense for a portion of pizza, no doubt to walk through the streets of the city and do not worry about maintaining the status of “incognito”. For a foursome in the 2000s, it's wild (even for late Mike), just imagine how many jokes you can make that one moment alone.
If it had been a couple of three years earlier, I would have put 10 without hesitation and dubbed a masterpiece for all time. Now I am just happy with a brief dive into the once beloved world, and give more than 8 is not possible.
Turtles from the same universe meet their counterparts from a parallel universe to defeat two Schroeders together. But Schroeder has other plans, he throws our eight from one multiverse to another, and himself moves to the very beginning, to the painted black and white world to destroy the very first turtles.
Creating this film, the developers decided to put an end to the old series of the 80s, combining old turtles with new ones from the series of the 2000s, and in my opinion the idea is not very well implemented. The plot gets confused, the narrative is predictable and nothing new happens. Yes, there are more enemies, but also turtles, so good once again defeats evil. It's a standard situation for this series.
The cartoon is not attractive and does not carry any plot load in the general universe. You can safely skip and not look. I'd like more.
How many generations of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have you personally caught? One? Two? Oh, well, you can, in addition to the animated series from childhood, remember a three-dimensional full-length cartoon from zero. But “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles”, which is extremely difficult to believe now, originally appeared in the black and white comics of the same name.
What is the beauty of this two-dimensional feature? In that it combines several parallel universes of the "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" (a typical comic book trick). There are good old, well-known ninja turtles, which they appeared in the cartoon from our childhood. There are more modern ninja turtles. And, finally, there are those black and white nosed ninja turtles from the comic-progenitor of all this, as it turned out after the release of the cartoon in question, the multiverse.
But in addition to several hypostases of our favorite turtles, the viewer also expects an unprecedented sight - two Schroeders in one reality. Thus, the enemies of the turtles in the cartoon are serious and even the fact that the turtles are twelve does not make it easier for them to save the turtle prime, the comic black and white universe from which the ninja turtles were born. Well, that's a noble goal, even if it sounds silly to be honest. We have an animated film for fans of the turtle universe, which is suitable only for a one-time viewing.
Verdict. Kawabanga!
