I don’t know who Toby Tobias is, but I can see that the man is new. To begin with, I would like to describe the problem in general, and then move on to the film Blood Orange.
Directors with a solid background in filmmaking and especially in so-called “non-commercial cinema” use cinema as a kind of narrative language about their vision of the world. Of course, absolutely any film, basically made to one degree or another for the sake of money, recognition and other physical and mental satisfaction of the creator. But as in any business, there is a conscientiously completed task, there is a poorly completed task, there is a rather bad kind of result of actions – “so that it would be, because such an incident has turned up.”
In the case of Bloody Orange, the film was made for the film. Like, look, we have an art house, the author's idea, references and so on, in general, everything is like gourmet cinema. We actually have a movie about nothing. The actions of the heroes, pompous chamberiness, references to the whole contract and it is not clear for what purpose. In my opinion, the problem with new directors is that they make films in order to make films without putting any messages or ideas into their brainchild. “Bloody Orange” is a completely empty film, without causing any emotions, except a slight annoyance towards the end. How old Iggy was lured here is unclear. However, he is of course beautiful here, but he failed to pull out the creative efforts of the director. Even the title of the film sounds like a lure, they say, look, we probably have allusions to "Clockwork Orange" Kubrick, no, nothing, just emptiness. I probably, like everyone else, fell for the title, Iggy Pop and the fresh release date.
In the end: a review for the sake of review, but the film for the sake of the film. Generally, a typical passerby. Do not waste time, do not make mistakes of those who dare to see it.
