The case when a mentally retarded script and its elaboration (heroes, dialogues, internal conflicts and their relationships) interrupt wonderful special effects and graphics.
The film tells about one single sortie against aliens in a world where humanity is waging a war against incredibly superior alien giants with almost unlimited capabilities. It is worth watching in order to see again familiar characters, previously not filmed technologies and sometimes even beautiful graphics.
Let me explain three things:
The film does not explain who these people are, so familiarity with anime and/or manga is highly desirable. To watch this film in isolation from the rest is dubious pleasure.
The film is based on the manga, but many things (primarily the list of characters) are written by the scriptwriters of the film.
The 2004 manga and TV series diverge after a temple battle, the film follows the manga storyline.
A few years ago, after watching the series and then immediately reading the manga, I took up the first two films and was very disappointed in them. Bad acting, weak plot, and in the second film generally went somewhere in their own wilds. After learning about the third film, I did not even read anything about it and very in vain:
The bad acting of past films is mostly corrected by 3D animation in the spirit of the films Final Fantasy or, for example, Beowulf.
There is very little slack in the plot, the characters were most likely replaced to attract anime fans, as well as to reveal familiar characters from the other side and in general it went painlessly, plus they tried to explain how it happened.
I don’t remember huge human-like robots in the manga, but all the other technologies were really there.
What happens to a person when they die? Where does his essence go next? Is there any life after death? Similar questions have long been “existing” not only in the minds of brilliant scientists of the planet, but also ordinary people. Allow everyone to “think up” questions on such interesting topics. Quite an unusual and interesting answer to these questions and is this film directors debutants Yasushi Kawamura and Keiichi Saito .
The very task of another film adaptation of the cult manga Hiroya Oku, which became a real cultural phenomenon, was quite risky. Especially if you consider the fact that the manga has already managed to be embodied both in an incredibly accurately filmed animated series (except for discrepancies in the last 5-6 episodes of the series), and in the dilogy of feature films.
However, it is gratifying that this film directed by Yasushi Kawamura and Keiichi Saito is not only not repeated behind all the above projects, but also represents a different point of view on the cult Japanese manga. Saving the “DNA” of the original manga and animated series, but embodying the story on the screen on the example of an abundance of plot moments that were ignored by both the animated film and two feature films. This gives the impression of a prequel.
In the rest, the plot of the picture develops according to a long-trodden scheme. Similar to previous projects, pushing the plot itself to the background and highlighting the exceptional disclosure of the characters of the main characters of the tape. Allows you to watch how much the characters of the tape change during the “game” and sometimes not for the better. It is against this background that creating a dramatic foundation of the tape, which is perfectly manifested in the final act of the tape. Even if long-standing questions about the origin of Gantz and “the game, and the invasion of monsters and everything else still remain unanswered.”
The visual component of the tape is as in the case of the relatively recent “Kingsglave” of the “Last Fantasy” universe, but also surpassing all conceivable and unthinkable expectations at the first moments of the narrative. The animation impresses with its realism and complete detail of the environment. That allows you to savor even more from the incredibly juicy and spectacularly staged action scenes of the picture, which you watch with great pleasure. Moreover, all this spectacle is inertly “served” complete with blood fountains, a pack of severed limbs and other adult content.
With the exception of the old man and the advertising star, all the other characters in the picture turned out to be very interesting and lively. Not only against the background of well-made animation of the characters, but also how personally presented the personal dramas of the characters. As for the ladies, they are drawn very nicely and nicely. Glad to see you. Including a whole horde of monsters, none of which is repeated outwardly after another. The main decoration of the tape is the “chief boss” of the picture, which is constantly reborn from the dead and reborn in a new form and guise. Allows you to watch him on the screen with a faint heart.

Gantz: 0 - another immersion in the atmosphere and the epicenter of the cult manga Hiroya Oku, who managed to preserve the "DNA" of the original works and bring something relatively new. Including due to the magnificent animation and hurricane spectacle, which are certainly the main pearl of this work. Very spectacular, rich and exciting work that made a strong impression on me. I have never been a fan of anime movies.
The abundance of positive reviews made my impressions in the form of a text. I haven’t read the manga, watched an anime series and one movie, so my point of view may differ from the canon.
In my opinion, the authors of this work and films went in the wrong direction, the emphasis was not on that, and the main thing that I liked so much in the anime series was completely removed.
Monsters, lore and action were non-essential elements, and therefore very poorly represented. Here, in addition to monsters, action and hit numerous sequels there is nothing.
The main detail, the heroes, was to behave realistically in all these strange and unrealistic situations. And faith in everything that happens is often formed due to stupidity, pathetic speeches, and then some thrashing happening in the frame. Here, the heroes are constantly screeching fan service chicks, for which you do not want to worry, but kill them as soon as possible, but more bloody.
Of the less terrible minuses, many secondary images can be distinguished: large monsters and large humanoid robots (probably closer to the Pacific Rim), monsters (from Ghost Away, although probably this is Japanese folklore, hydralisks from Starcraft, a monster from boobs was also somewhere), some equipment (floating transport, exoskeletons, but not those tight, but more archaic). But that’s just boring.
As it turned out, I am not at all familiar with the works of the Digital Frontier studio. The number of their works at the moment is very sparse, but this does not change the fact that most of them really deserve attention. I really love the Resident Evil series and it was these guys who had a hand in some really good game adaptations of this universe. At the same time, they are clearly not indifferent to the gaming industry and adapted Tekken, which also turned out to be a very good film. Their latest work is slightly knocked out of the number of film adaptations of video games and reverses the events of one of the most famous anime. This is a very good thing to do.
The plot of the work introduces us to a schoolboy - Masaru Kato. By accident, the guy dies in the subway and after death goes not to the gates of paradise, but to an incomprehensible room, in the middle of which, there is a huge kind of sphere that gives orders, supplies high-tech suits, as well as all sorts of weapons. From Kato, and a number of other “lucky” are required to destroy the alien monsters that flooded the territory of Japan, even at the cost of their own lives.
In fact, I didn’t really like the original anime at the time, as it had too many completely unnecessary things and was incredibly long-drawn. At the same time, there were enough really good episodes with great action. Alas, this circumstance did not benefit the product as a whole and there were many claims to the anime. Fortunately, I can safely say that the creators of Gantz: O' pulled absolutely all the excess and managed to skillfully transfer the plot to the screen, and even fit in an hour and a half, when the anime had 26 episodes. The plot itself has undergone some revision and change, this only benefited, the creators simply did not repeat themselves, which contributes to normal interest from the viewer throughout the viewing. The action is just beautiful, it really is one of the top. Of course, because the creators of Biohazard worked on it, where everything was also great. A sea of blood, torn limbs, killed monsters, people and complete devastation consume the viewer. At the same time, everything is in perfect order with the atmosphere here, it is its own, not like in the anime, it is very similar to Biohazard and it is noticeable almost immediately. The characters look great, it's one of the best facial animations. We saw something like this in Kingslave last year. The local heroes really seem alive, especially the girls like Anzu Yamasaki and Reiko Shimohira. Rarely when characters made using computer modeling, can make you really worry about them.
Many of the local ideas were realized 100% and the work will almost certainly appeal to fans of both anime and manga. Simply because it has absorbed all the best, and even has an original approach to the already familiar plot. Nevertheless, “Gantz: O may also appeal to absolute beginners who are unfamiliar with this universe, as much here is original and quite understandable. Yes, there are some things that can raise certain questions, but nothing that could throw a new viewer into a stupor. Most of the motives and actions in principle chewed quite well and given the short duration. In the case of Gantz: O, I would definitely like to see a logical continuation, because the Digital Frontier everything turned out at a very high level and such an undertaking would not want to be abandoned.

About 2 years ago I read the manga "Gantz" and then I really liked it, despite the fact that I am not particularly a fan of manga as a genre and for all the time read the power of 5 pieces. “Gantz” is a great fiction and a unique story, of course, the manga lacked a variety of borrowings from other fiction, for example, “Avatar”, but this does not make it bad. After the manga came out: anime series and 2 films. It was something terrible, dull and boring, and I decided that Gantz would probably never be rehabilitated. And then suddenly comes "Gantz: O"
And it's just beautiful! It’s just like in the manga, the characters, their appearance, their behavior, weapons, monsters and so on. Everything is done just as the author of the manga invented it. In "Gantz: O" - we see only 1/10 of those events that are described in the manga, in fact, not a very large fragment of the manga was taken, slightly adapted for animation and showed a fantastic spectacle!
There is no explanation of who the heroes are, who Kurono is or why he died. We think Sato is the main character, but that's not quite true. To find out all the vicissitudes of the plot, I advise you to read the manga, and here you will see a great action drawn just as it was conceived in the manga: a lot of blood, terrible endless monsters, alien weapons, heroes with different motivations, etc.
From the point of view of a fan, this is a work of 10 out of 10, a real mast heavy. I would like to see a few more parts to cover the whole story. I would have to make 10 to 20 of these movies. Which, of course, will never happen, but a pity.
For beginners who have not read the manga - here only: hurricane action, unusual special effects, beautiful graphics and dynamic development of events. However, do not watch children, this is not a children's cartoon and manga, especially not a children's! Strictly from 18+.
Gantz is a well-known thing. A manga that ended in 2013. In 2004, the series of the same name was released, which was almost gorgeous (let’s not take into account the last arch, let’s pretend that it did not exist). Personally, I have not followed the franchise for a long time, so the exit was unexpected. But the fact of the existence of a full meter forced to abandon all business and again plunge into the peculiar world of Gantz.
The main character is not really the main character. That's the paradox. Although newcomers to the universe may not even suspect it. During the film, only a few times they will talk about a certain Kurono, let them show a couple of shots. In short, don’t worry about it!
Like all noodles, Kato does not understand what is happening here. Who should be killed? Why is he here? What is Gantz? But the guy learns quickly. The rules are simple: kill or be killed. Each monster encountered at the location is worth a certain amount of points. When you reach 100, you can choose one of several prizes. You have to live until the end of the next hunt, then you will survive, no matter what terrible wounds were inflicted, but your heart must still beat, otherwise - the end. This time, the gangsters were unlucky - there were several high-level monsters at once, one of which is a 100-pointer. The last time such a massacre could survive only one hero.
The graphic part is made qualitatively. I’m very specific to 3D anime, but there are no drawbacks. Unless you suffer from persistent intolerance to 3D models of any kind.
Manga was somewhat different from the film adaptation. In my opinion, there were more details in the original that were missing. Anyone who read it will remember the episode with the head cut off. It is a pity that this is not the case.
If you are not familiar with the franchise, then do not be afraid to get lost in the twists and turns of the plot. It won't be difficult. There's a lot of action waiting for you. It's not without pathos. They will bring monsters of all kinds. Sit down and enjoy the show.

P.S. If you like it, check out the 2004 series. He still looks decent.
The film is an adaptation of the manga. I will say right away, I have not read the manga and I have not watched the anime, so my assessment will be specifically for this film, without taking into account past film adaptations of the manga.
Plot
I want to start with the story. It seems simple and incomprehensible at the same time. The main character dies, but after death, he goes not to the creator, but to an unknown room with several people who are also dead. There is a strange black ball in the room that triggers a game in which all the people who have died will have to fight strange monsters. If a man dies in the game, he dies forever. If he loses a body part, he will be restored after the game is over. If the monsters stay alive for the game, then all the players die.
The incomprehensibility of the plot lies in one phrase “What the hell?”. What the hell is going on here? Heroes die but come to life in the real world. There is no telling where these monsters came from or how to finally destroy them. It is not clear what kind of project this Gantz, which launches the game. Nothing is clear about the resurrection system or anything else, a strange weapon that only players have and is absent from ordinary mortals. I don’t know much about it at all!
But the funny thing is that despite the complete chaos in the plot, you do not pay attention to it at all. After 15 minutes of viewing, I realized that there was not much to expect from the plot and just enjoyed what was happening on the screen. There really is something going on here.
Animation
The film is visually very cool, and now I do not mean the smoothness and dynamism of the movements of the main characters, but I mean very powerful detailing and excellent picture quality. When they shoot a case or a close-up weapon, you can see some scuffles and small scratches on them, that immediately there are thoughts “And they, by chance, did not shoot a prototype?” It looks too real. When monsters move, you can see that not only the main parts of the body move, but also some elements that belong to them.
A great example of a monster that consists of many different parts of a woman’s body. When the monster beautifully dodges the shots, it can be seen how, depending on its movements, parts of the female body are also subject to physical laws. When the monster swings his hand, where instead of fingers - female legs, these legs not only fly along the trajectory, but also sway a little in different directions, showing the dynamism and power of the air flow that passes them, demonstrating the force of the impact.
Creativity
Very creatively executed monsters. Without exaggeration, when I first saw monsters in the film, I immediately felt like you stick your head out the window of the car on the move and a jet of strong air hits you in the face, making it difficult to breathe. Monsters look very unusual and move very unusually and dynamically. I'm sure you won't find a movie where anything like that happened. What is worth only the grandfather, who was cut into pieces and he in the air, from each part, like a hydra, regenerated into many of his copies. Or a monster that began to wrap around a character who tried to kill him, wrapping the female parts of the body and absorbing it.
Very well done dismemberment of monsters. It's not just a regular cannon shot that leaves a hole in the monster and he's dead. These are weapons that I have never seen in any movie. What is only worth a pistol, which wraps the laser chain of the enemy and a laser from the sky, disassembles him the area that was shrouded. Or take a gun with which you shoot at a monster, and an invisible plate falls on it from the sky, which turns it into a pool of blood.
Blood is very clearly and well drawn - how it behaves in relation to other objects (characters, asphalt, various obstacles), how it scatters and generally seems very realistic.
Stiffness
The film is filled with hard scenes and dismemberment. I thought Kill Bill was a movie with more dismemberments than any other. Looking at this one, I start to doubt it. Not only is there a lot of it, it feels like the filmmakers just savored every second, coming up with and drawing another sophisticated method of murder. Even me, a person who often plays various games with hard scenes, some scenes were twisted.
Characters
It’s one of those moments where little has been said about the characters and that’s enough. There are no scenes where everyone tells their story for 5 minutes, revealing their motives in this story to the viewer. Just a minute to learn the story of important characters, and the rest does not matter. What’s happening on screen is much more interesting than what’s been happening in the lives of those characters, and I think it’s great that you’re watching the constant action instead of the drama.
Conclusion
The movie is incredibly healthy. This is the case when such an important element as the plot ceased to play a role for me. It is very interesting to watch what happens on the screen, how the characters move, fight with monsters, how these monsters behave, how they are painted, how rivers of blood flow through the stage. If the plot may be intrigued by the turn of events, then this film intrigued by the technical implementation. It is very pleasant to look at the picture, you often feel that you saw something completely new, can often twitch from some scenes.
In my opinion, this film should be limited to 18+, if not all 21+, because it is really creepy in terms of toughness. If you are not afraid of a weak plot, hard work and want to see something new in terms of ideas and quality of execution, then I highly recommend it for viewing.
