We're filthy ridiculous dolls dancing on a disgusting stage. How much fun it is for us to dance and fuck without a single thought, not knowing that we are worthless and we have a different destiny – no matter how correct and wise these words may seem, I cannot sympathize with and sympathize with the killer maniac pursued by two detectives in the movie Seven. An old-time detective and his young partner find bodies, and next to them are letters and written on the walls names of sins, for which people were punished by a certain maniac who seeks to rid the world of sinners. The mind and prudence of the maniac are amazing, he leads the police around his finger and kills his victims in the most painful ways. If you have already begun to empathize with this killer, then take your time, because he is based on seven deadly sins invented many centuries ago. For example, gluttony is not a sin for a long time, because there is practically no shortage of food, which means that no one will suffer from the fact that someone will eat twice as much as the rest. Why punish a prostitute for lust? She doesn’t feel this desire, she earns from it. In general, he is a simple madman who has read a couple of books and thinks he is smart. Rather, he discredits his morality and his views with his inadequacy and lack of logic. As for strategy, he's really good at it. It was interesting to watch even considering that I learned the ending by accident many years ago.
As for the two policemen, they are very ordinary, for the detective genre in particular: an old man who has lost his grip, strongly reminiscent of the detective in “No Country for Old Men” and an ambitious young partner who does not have enough experience. You can see the classic system “good, bad, evil”, where the good is an old detective played by Morgan Freeman, the bad is a cunning maniac played by Kevin Spacey, and the evil is a newcomer partner played by Brad Pitt.
The gloom, cruelty, pessimism characteristic of noir cinema are successfully selected for the corresponding plot. David Fincher did his best, but it’s worth noting that in my opinion he didn’t do anything remarkable. Just a good plot, a good noir atmosphere, good characters. Nothing special, but you will not miss the film.
Throughout the film, the number seven was repeated, apparently David Fincher is a genius and purposely made the film so that I put it. . .
Seven is an absolutely incredible film in its genre, one of the best directed by David Fincher. The film tells the story of detectives who investigate crimes based on 7 deadly sins.
Let’s go through all the points for an adequate assessment of the film:
1) I give 1 point to the film for its idea. It’s a very difficult topic, especially in 1995. At the time, I'm sure Seven made a real splash.
The second point goes to the film for the smooth development of the plot: from incident to incident, the characters are more and more buried in the investigation, and each next crime is tougher than the previous one. It is also worth noting the dialogues: they are perfectly spelled out, meaningful, you do not feel any playfulness.
The third point is definitely for the logical finale. Nothing is broken - neither the chronology nor the original idea. The scenes ending the film fit perfectly into the overall plot and logically complete it.
2) Play of actors - in the actors, a psychological correspondence with the characters is fully felt. The main characters performed their roles delightfully: Morgan Freeman and Brad Pitt showed the highest skill. You truly believe them throughout the entire period. Kevin Spacey also coped with the role 100% - moderately calm and cool, moderately insidious, moderately painful. Also +1 point.
Another, already the fifth point should be awarded to the film for the stunning appearance of the characters. Each character corresponds to his clothes, behavior, atmosphere in the scene. As an example, you can cite one character from the very beginning, this image is remembered, which even found an echo in the music industry: the German band Rammstein reshot this scene for their video Haifisch (2009).
(3) Music – there’s not much to say about it. She is concise, at the right moments keeps the tension, otherwise skillfully accompanies a stunning video sequence. Deserved sixth point of the film.
(4) The visual component - much was said in the paragraph about the actors, and now it is necessary to mention their environment. All the scenery, makeup, lighting, color correction - everything fits perfectly into what is happening. The film is dark in moderation and it only works for him. Seventh point in the piggy bank.
The camera work is amazing. The angles, the setting, the shooting of dynamic scenes are flawless. The installation is not tense, the frame does not shake, there is a clear understanding of what is happening. There are also a lot of incredibly atmospheric scenes in the film. Again +1.
(5) The finale is, oh, it's an absolute masterpiece. It is unpredictable, until the very beginning of the denouement, the viewer does not even know what the antagonist's plan is. It shows a very strong emotional scene, where there is a confrontation of the mind with animal anger and feelings. For an unobvious denouement, I put the film at once 2 points.
David Fincher is one of those directors who manages to deliver quality work even in projects that don’t require it. As a film director, he began with work on the third Alien and shared not the most rosy impressions of such work, although now they say about the tape that it was underestimated and even the editing version is far from what Fincher intended. The best films include those tapes that are somehow associated with the thriller. I will name three of them – “Seven”, “Game”, “Fight Club”. We will talk about the first one today. Next, I will share my impressions of the new acquaintance with the tape and some thoughts on this. Brew your drinks, we'll start.
A narrative criterion or narrative. Since there is no literary source here, you will have to sit on the plot longer. In the center of the plot is the retirement of William Somerset, who is covered with a copper pelvis, because seven days before the big event, the underworld again reminds itself of itself. Murder committed. It's not simple, it's sophisticated. One that requires the presence of an experienced detective. But the case also involves a young and ambitious detective David Mills and the two of them have to solve a series of murders and the motivation of the maniac to commit crimes. The best thing about this film is the contrast between the characters. Sommerset is thorough and calm, focused. Ready to dive into library funds to identify the villainous system. Mills prefers fieldwork and a supporter of interviewing witnesses, if any. Somerset will think before doing anything. Mills is a proponent of the reverse method - first do, then justify. At first, it seems that the well-read viewer will predict the action of the film after half an hour of viewing, but the finale of the third act dramatically changes the impression. Thus, the concept of punishment for the seven deadly sins is fully completed.
Visual criterion or technical support of the tape. The most powerful element of the film is the atmosphere. And understanding this happens already at the time of the first titles. The selection of letters is good, especially spider webs scattered around the frame, and the final titles also loop the exterior style in that they are broadcast in the opposite direction. The cameraman Darius Honji savors every scene where the corpse decomposes, making up adds to these bodies even more ugliness. For the first time, I was really scared of a man who was tied to a bed and all skin and bones. The presence of moments of fear is also pleasing. The tape, though leisurely, but periodically adds to the dynamism, changing the angles in the dialogues and changing the perspective of perception well adds points to the atmosphere. Music also plays an important role in creating an atmosphere. Howard Shore wrote a memorable atmospheric ambient, well emphasizing dark episodes and calmer themes in dialogue. But best of all, the sound revealed episodes with dramaturgy. Individual themes will be a pleasant addition to your music collection.
The acting game deserves high praise. Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman in this film are perceived exclusively in conjunction, since both embody different characters and at the same time there is definitely a strong chemistry between them. Otherwise, their relationship would not be affected. In this film, the impression of Freeman is slightly different from what he produced in the previous film, he is a detective, but also wiser experience, while here his character is more well-read, and such a character also fits into the range of roles of Freeman. Kevin Spacey justifies every minute of being in the frame, the good of them a little. Here is the case when the average appearance hides a sophisticated mind and a clever manipulator. Gwyneth Paltrow, although a secondary character, is remembered for being an important detail in revealing the emotional context, and as a result, the main characters. The actors of dubbing organically fit into the characters. Alexei Voytyuk and Alexander Matveev gave voices to Somerset and Mills, and Kevin Spacey was written by Ivan Kalinin, who has a rare villainous charm. Not Vladimir Vikhrov, but also good.
I will definitely advise you to get acquainted, although the plot may seem simple, but the investigation process is shown in as much detail as the budget allowed. The film captivates with its atmosphere, immersion in action and until the last you do not know how it will all end, visual style and high-star cast. Connoisseurs of the genre and fans of the director approve. All health, peace and good cinema.
I watched a very interesting, exciting, but at the same time dark and heavy film - Seven.
The film tells the story of two completely opposite characters who happened to work as partners. David Mills and William Somerset. The first is a young, ambitious, hot-tempered and impulsive guy. He has a wife, two dogs, they just moved to a new city and live very nicely together. At least that's what his partner saw.
Somerset, on the contrary, restrained, adult, experienced and time-tested detective.
Both of them were involved in a very difficult and truly terrible case.
The murderer punished the "sinners" one by one, emphasizing each of the Seven Deadly Sins. Lust. Gluttony. Greed. Anger. Envy. Pride. Laziness. They are expressed and shown in the offender's 'determined' own order.
The plot completely forces you to understand and start playing the classic game of cat mouse between the killer and the investigators. As the case unfolds, our characters get closer and begin to open up to each other. David becomes more polite to his partner, and he in turn begins to trust and even listen to the guy.
The dialogue in the bar, after an almost successful attempt to catch the killer, I consider a turning point. Because in that moment, David, through his unbroken character, gave hope to William. I hope that the city can be saved, that people can be saved.
The end is actually quite predictable, but you do not want to believe in it to the last and try not to think about it. Sometimes it feels like the devil is standing in front of you. It's actually just a human being. . .
A few words about the tape of David Fincher - "Seven"
I like to tickle my nerves on those nights when it's so boring. I want to see a movie where a methodical madman plays a game of cat and mouse with detectives. And now there is a reason to plunge into the filmography of David Fincher before “Fight Club”. When the name of the Director was already, but in the mass consciousness is not fully strengthened. I decided to make a new acquaintance with the film “Seven”. A thriller that takes, if not an investigation, then at least its atmosphere. I will share my impressions and thoughts on this.
A narrative criterion or narrative. Detective William Somerset is a veteran criminal investigator who dreams of retiring and moving away from the city and its sinful inhabitants. 7 days before retirement, two troubles fall on Somerset: a young partner Mills and a particularly sophisticated murder. The sharp mind of an experienced detective immediately determines that others are likely to follow this crime. The news confirms his hunch. Realizing that the killer punishes his victims for their deadly sins, the detective faces a choice: go back to work or leave and hand over the case to his less experienced partner? I think the most catchy thing about this story is the contrasting characters of Somerset and Mills. The calmness and equanimity of the age detective and the impulsive intemperance of the younger. Mills and Somerset, even in the manner of investigation, show contrast. One is willing to sit for hours in the library, looking for clues in Canterbury Tales and Divine Comedy and plotting. The other prefers to work in the field. At the same time, I am ready to recognize the detective investigation is not the strongest part, since a person read in modern detectives can easily predict the plot somewhere in the twentieth minute of timekeeping. But just because you know the story doesn't make it obvious to the characters, and we just follow them. And this process of following impresses me. Talking to your wife seems pointless until the final twist. The third act is worth watching.
Visual criterion or technical support of the tape. It is worth admitting that the tape has a style and understanding of this comes from the opening credits. The font is not average, which is nice. The final credits are also remembered by the reverse direction of the demonstration. The operator savors each frame in the episodes with corpses, creepy makeup adds atmospheric points, plus the camera in the dialogue changes angles, adding a little dynamism in the frame. The musical accompaniment is also worthy of praise, since it emphasizes the mood of a particular scene and creates tension in episodes with drama.
The actors play well. Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman work in pairs, embodying such different characters, but both can be called people of action. Kevin Spacey was on the screen from the power of ten minutes, but manages to outplay both, because he pronounces a monologue from which the viewer will understand the motive of the crime. Gwyneth Paltrow plays a supporting character. Her role in the story is to create an emotional background to reveal the dramatic potential of the main characters. I'll also note the dubbing tape. The main characters were written by Alexei Voytyuk and Alexander Matveev. Both were in the character of their heroes. Ivan Kalinin wrote Kevin Spacey and in the timbre of the actor’s voice there is a villainous charm that fit into the character on the screen.
As a verdict. I liked the movie. Its atmosphere, acting and stylish visual. All of the above frames biblical motifs and psychological suspense on character differences and a magnificent third act. Connoisseurs of the genre and Fincher fans do not pass by. All health, good and good movie.
Atmospheric detective thriller David Fincher tells the story of the investigation of a series of frightening murders, at first glance, loosely related to each other. However, it soon becomes clear that the victims of the mysterious maniac are the embodiment of the seven deadly sins, such as gluttony, greed, idleness, lust, pride, envy and anger.
Two detectives follow the bloody trail of a mad killer who amazes them with his detailed meticulousness while committing deadly atrocities. The crimson avenger is always one step ahead, which is why his further actions, his subsequent move, are not clear in advance. The denouement of the plot is shocking in the maximum way, giving a devastating aftertaste and a lot of food for thinking about the essence of human life.
It is worth noting the magnificent script by Andrew Kevin Walker, who worked on it for several years; a stunning neo-noir atmosphere; interesting camera decisions by Darius Honji; a talented cast that includes such notorious artists as Brad Pitt, Morgan Freeman, Gwyneth Paltrow and, of course, the monster Kevin Spacey. And tied all this together director David Fincher, for whom this picture was only the second in his full-length filmography. Actually, the success of this tape gave Fincher the opportunity to build a brilliant film career, and such his subsequent works as The Game, The Zodiac and The Disappeared confirmed the high professional status of the director.
Thus, “Seven” is a reference detective thriller, which has an amazing plot that occurs in the atmosphere of the neonoir and brings to light human sins in an extremely harsh and straightforward way. This film has inspired more than a dozen creators of the director's workshop to create similar narrative tone of work, and the recent "Batman" Matt Reeves is a vivid confirmation of this statement.
Finally, I have to say a few words. The inner content of this film in a rather harsh manner can motivate people to at least think about the meaning of human existence. And the ideological message of the film is quite strong and simple at the same time: the continuous struggle over their vices and sins will necessarily help an individual to become better. Gradually developing yourself, there is a chance to change the surrounding society for the better. So maybe we should start this fight right now? . .
For many today, Fincher's film "Seven" is a classic thriller about a maniac. If you ask a friend what kind of thrillers he knows and likes - for sure this film will be on his list. Apparently, many watched it as a child or long ago, what they have such pleasant memories of this picture. The movie itself is actually not bad, but not ingenious and deep.
What makes the film so good is the atmosphere and the picture. A gloomy, eternally rainy city, typical tired detectives, the vices of society collected in one huge metropolis, a gloomy and painful range - it is this set that many associate with thrillers and films about maniacs and in many ways this film stood at the birth of this stereotype. Many good thrillers of our time willingly take these visual techniques and it turns out still great.
The problem with the film, strangely enough, with the plot. The fact is that the main twist about who is ultimately a maniac simply does not work. The fact is that the killer appears absolutely accidentally and suddenly, without a single lead and tip on himself, having himself appeared and confessed to the murder. Such a decision is very surprising, since simply by introducing a random maniac into the plot on the spot, the director deprives the viewer of the pleasure to follow the leads and guesses and calculate the killer, and the detectives themselves did not achieve anything without catching the killer - he himself came to them. As a result, the entire timekeeping of the picture with the investigation becomes unnecessary and leads to nothing, which means that time was wasted as if in vain. Personally, I caused this great frustration after re-watching the picture, although I remember it cool in the plot.
The theme with mortal sins and punishment for them probably looked great and fresh at the time of release, but now, spoiled by the most different and sophisticated hardness, the viewer will not see something original and frightening in this - as I did not see this at a recent viewing.
The characters are very common, too. Except for the fact that they are played by eminent actors, they do not stand out. The most standard old grumpy comp about to retire, and the young, hot and edgy rookie - are there more standard types of police stories? Compare these pacifiers with the characters from Silence of the Lambs - this is where the characters with a capital letter with non-standard characters, types and behaviors.
As a result, it turns out that in 2022, apart from the still thick atmosphere and stylish gloomy picture, the film cannot offer anything worthwhile. It’s still a very smart film in its genre, but it’s definitely not a legendary movie or the best thriller it’s sometimes called. Maybe the first time you like it more, but after a few views and analysis of the plot, I was rather disappointed.
Attricia is when you regret your sins, not because you fear God, but because you have a gun to your head.
I’ve seen Seven twice, the first time a decade ago, and I recently decided to watch it. Impressions then and now are different, but this is a classic. So, the film starred superstars: Brad Pitt, Gwyneth Paltrow, Kevin Spacey and Morgan Freeman. All the actors are very talented, great and the composition is amazing.
In my opinion, this is one of the best detective thrillers. Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman played a beautiful duet. The plot is very well remembered, but until the very end it is unclear how the film will end, but it is simply impossible to break away from viewing. The atmosphere in the film was very tense, and did not let go for a minute, it is difficult to predict the development of events.
There are, of course, many unpleasant moments in the film, the murders themselves are quite vile and disgusting. And the ending, I just want to rewind and rewrite, but no, Brad Pitt insisted on this ending and nothing else. There's a lot of cruelty, although that implies the genre itself. In the process of viewing, the viewer will have something to think about. It is very interesting to watch, but because of the finale, an unpleasant residue remains in the soul.
It is possible that the picture will seem boring and gloomy to someone. But it is only a feeling because of the atmosphere of tension and fear. Again, I liked the rhythm of the film very much, its style and gloom are part of the director’s idea. In general, fans of the sharp genre will definitely like the film. I would recommend it to anyone who loves drama and drama. This is a police investigation, in the best of traditions. And the seven deadly sins complement the film with mysticism and intrigue.

A film from the Top 250 of all time. Directed by Fincher, in the roles of a constellation of already established stars and those who will soon shine in the sky, including Spacey, Pitt, Peltrow, Freeman. I remember how shocked he was when I saw him for the first time. I revisited it recently. To call it disappointment would probably be wrong. The movie didn't get any worse over time. But... What might have struck in 1995 is no longer striking a quarter of a century later. The film's ideas aren't complicated. A psychopath who assumes the function of God and retribution for sins, as well as a bloody game of cat and mouse and charades with the investigator - these techniques were then implemented many, many times by other directors. The sense of novelty disappeared completely. And the naturalism of many scenes has long been surpassed and also not shocking. What’s more, these scenes now look like an end in themselves, shock-content rather than an artistic decision. All in all, recognizing the pioneership of Seven, I can no longer appreciate it so highly, if only because it no longer excites me. Although the same “Heart of an Angel”, shot almost 10 years earlier and also became the basis for a bunch of imitations and rehashing, still holds.
"Seven" is an amazing movie. Gloomy, like Macbeth himself, and fundamental, like Bosch’s canvas, with the same number of sins in the title. I wouldn’t be surprised if this painting by the Dutch artist was the catalyst for David Fincher’s second (read the first) film. Deconstruction of the noir genre in all its glory, eternal rain, neon signs, detectives and of course a twisted plot. Now we know how deftly Fincher manages such introductory, but in the 95th, hardly anyone knew about it.
The director, like an experienced magician, consistently leads his game, gradually laying out a map for a map on the table. First, wise Morgan Freeman, then impulsive Brad Pitt with Gwyneth Paltrow in addition, murder, suspense, a bustling city mired in vice, and, of course, the main trump card of this doomed party is Kevin Spacey as John Doe.
Uh, move over, Hannibal Lecter, it seems your throne has been occupied for a very long time. No wonder in the lists of various villains, John is given the first place, oh no wonder.
Teeth knock after the ending, leaving the bewildered viewer alone with the credits. Honestly, I thought that emotions would subside over the years, but this was not the case. Se7en is an uncompromising (possibly the best) thriller in the flesh that keeps the blood cold.
Detective "Seven" David Fincher, known to most of the "Fight Club", is called cult, and is also in the top 250 according to Kinopoisk. Having a huge number of positive reviews and a score of 8.6 on IMDb undoubtedly confirms its “cultality”, but, unfortunately, after watching “Seven” leaves a slight disappointment.
The main characters are two detectives - Somerset (Morgan Freeman) and Mills (Brad Pitt). A week before retirement, burned veteran criminal investigation William Somerset, tired of his work and the city as a whole, as well as his young partner Mills, will face a sophisticated killer, punishing his victims for one of the seven deadly sins.
Acting, of course, at a very good level, because such stars of the film industry as Morgan Freeman and Brad Pitt, have long established themselves as excellent actors. Freeman perfectly managed to convey the image of an old, lonely pessimistic detective who has seen a lot in his career, is not surprised by anything, knows well that many stories do not have a happy ending. In contrast to the character of Freeman, a young and hot detective Mills, recently nailed to the big city, a young family man, confident in his abilities, who thinks that he can cope with any crime.
The film is definitely recommended for viewing, but it is still worth saying why it caused me disappointment. There are several subjective reasons for this. First, the religious motives in the detectives are quite tired, where the victims are supposedly sinners and deserve to die at the hands of a mentally unstable person who believes that he is the punishing hand of God. Secondly, the main disappointment is the climax. Again, I can’t help comparing Fincher’s work to Fight Club, which turned my brain inside out. Here, the viewer, who is used to watching the movie carefully and thinking in the process, closer to the middle of the film begins to guess how it will all end, but hopes that he deliberately let the dust in his eyes, but, unfortunately, this is not the case, everything happens exactly as the viewer expected. After watching, the question remains, “Is that all?” Is that all Fincher could think of? But again, I repeat, this is my subjective opinion, there is nothing I can do about it, and the film is very good and worth the time spent on it.

I finally took the time to praise the wonderful work of David Fincher. This picture I watched 3 times in different periods of my life, and each viewing left behind an oppressive cloud of gravity. To familiarize yourself with this film really need to prepare well, because otherwise you will not be easy to perceive it.
Plot. William Somerset has worked in the police for most of his life and is about to retire. But then suddenly he is paired with a young partner Mills, and detectives face a sophisticated murder. Somerset faces a difficult choice: go on a well-deserved rest or help a beginner solve a case.
Somehow too easily the tape manages to attract the viewer’s attention to the screen. To follow the rapid development of events becomes interesting from the first minutes. Surprising is the fact that the picture does not use any extraordinary tricks. It just relies on a competent and consistent scenario, in which every detail is in its place. The characters are perfectly revealed, which is why the viewer easily gets closer to them and understands their characters. I expected a little more from the end. I thought it would be even more crazy and explosive. The authors carefully and carefully prepared for such a final, but the finished version did not quite fit well with my expectations.
The atmosphere. Stylistically, the movie looks great. The opening credits, endless downpour, dark tones... all these elements create a unique gloomy and disturbing atmosphere. Dialogues perfectly convey the mood and thoughts of the main characters. Locations also play a huge role in the construction of an inhospitable background, many scenes are remembered thanks to such a serious approach to the work of the creators. Not to mention the brilliant acting of Brad Pitt (Detective Mills), Morgan Freeman (Detective Somerset) and Kevin Spacey (John Doe). Every actor has played a great role.
Music. A variety of musical accompaniment can not but please a true film lover and music lover. Here you will find the crushing compositions of Howard Shore (for example, "Portrait Of John Doe"), and stylish "Now's The Time" (Charlie Parker), and even the classic "Air Suite No. 3 In D Major, Bwv 1068" by Bach. It is also amazing how skillfully all these compositions are woven into the right moments of the tape. Just bravo.
Over. A great movie that should be a must-see for anyone who loves neonoir and David Fincher. For a complete immersion in a depressed atmosphere, I recommend watching the film alone when it rains outside. Unusual impressions are guaranteed.

(93%), “This type is methodical, persistent and, worst of all, patient.”
For a long time hatched the idea of writing movie reviews (and finally reached the hands), and suddenly for me the very first victim of talentless criticism was one of Fincher’s favorite projects – “Seven”. This picture, ahead of its time, is an example of why cinema is an art. A bunch of mastodons of the Hollywood scene, led by Morgan Freeman and at that time, the still unknown David Fincher, resulted in a very atmospheric neo-noir thriller.
The author almost in the first scenes gives us an idea of what will be the leitmotif of the film, namely the seven Christian mortal sins. Such an approach, no doubt, will not seem necessary to everyone, in particular to all sorts of pseudo-intellectuals, for whom the meaning of the film should be an infinite number of hidden references. Of course, the variety of interpretation of the author’s idea is really why people go to the cinema and love it, but, in my opinion, this case is an exception, and given the fact that not so soon Fincher will shoot the legendary fight club, he knows how to cope with this case.
A young impulsive new cop-altruist, in the role of which everyone’s favorite Brad Pitt in a duet with a corrupt and disillusioned detective Somerset (as Freeman) investigate the case with obvious religious overtones. Both characters complement each other very well and harmoniously interact with the fanatical killer, played by Kevin Spacey. The dark, depressing atmosphere of the nameless city, accompanied by oppressive accompaniment, was recreated flawlessly. And special attention deserves the titles - a work of art. All this is intertwined with a good story, raising the problem of flaws of the rotten system, which most of us already seem the norm.
From the bad: almost every frame shouts about symbolism, in almost every scene we are given to know what the author’s plan is, my God, and even the title refers to this, namely to the seven notorious mortal sins, at one moment it seemed to me that I was watching a “film” of an ordinary Russian filmmaker trying to convey to the viewer with all his might, what he wanted to convey. But this minus, perhaps subjective (I am sure there are those who like this straightforwardness in their liking), sinks in a huge number of pluses.
The topic of religious dogmas in cinema was touched by everyone, this is undoubtedly a separate topic for discussion, but in this case we have a unique case. The anti-hero in this case does not appear to us as a messenger of God, and he can only make fools sympathize with himself. Fincher was certainly ahead of his time.
A completely stupid ending in which the last sinful characters happened not as victims but as executioners. Well, no, cheating in this case is not a beautiful turn of events, but a hopeless hole in the plot. Oh, that's it.
We are stupid and funny dolls participating in some nasty circus performance. What is the use of dancing and copulation, we do not even care about the World. We don't know we don't know anything. We are not what we intended. This will be the only mini-spoiler in this description) ALL!
What would I like to write? David Fincher, the culprit and the creator of this film, shot in my opinion a truly amazing masterpiece. The figure, in the sphere of our favorite art of cinema, can rightfully be proud that he gave us one of the genius and cult films.
The film immerses you in thinking, listening carefully, deeply and intensely about the issues of everyday life that you may not notice. The tape is full of different thoughts for the viewer, one of the ones I liked, for example, how long you were in the library or how long ago you turned the last page scooping up invaluable information in your {knowledge receiver}.
A magnificent performance of the actors, it is pleasant to watch the clearly played roles of secondary and episodic characters; a beautiful duet from Morgan Freeman and Brad Pitt, the intellectually thinking detective William Somerset and drawing energy from the emotions of detective David Mills; and of course, pleased with the charismatic nature of the mysterious and cunning character bearing the pseudonym John Doe; the witty script, the accompanying atmosphere in the scenes, all this makes the work of master Fincher one of the best in his career.
Despite the 95th year of the film’s creation, it’s capable of beating any of its kind of imitators in modern times.
I wonder if there are those lucky ones who have not yet had time to get acquainted with this film?
The verdict is tolerable! Just kidding.
P.S. Ernest Hemingway once said, “The world is a good place and worth fighting for.” Do you agree with the first one?
Even though the movie is quite old, from 1995, I only recently discovered it. Somehow I missed such a good movie.
First of all, I was attracted to the cast, judge for yourself: Brad Pitt, Morgan Freeman, Kevin Spacey and Gwyneth Peltrow. Secondly, a lot of recommendations from YouTube video hosting with reviews, as well as on the advice of a couple of friends.
From the filmography of the director knew only the film “Fight Club” in 2003 with Brad Pitt and Edwart Norton.
Detective Sommerset, played by Morgan Freeman, is about to retire with 7 days left to retire. And a week before this long-awaited event on his head two troubles. First, he gets assistants, who will later pass all the cases, a young, confident, completely different in the perception of life partner, whose name is Mills and played by Brad Pitt, and secondly, in the city there is first one, and then a whole series of cruel and sophisticated murders. Before Sommerset, the task arises: either to continue working with Mills and investigate these terrible crimes, or still calmly retire, forget about all the nightmares of work and start a new quiet life.
At the same time, unlike future films like Saw, the scenes of cruelty themselves were not shown, but only the consequences. This is even better, for who wants to watch a rapist force to death literally eat pasta, or as a drug addict for a year is drugged until he becomes a semblance of the “walking dead”, or as an arrogant woman is disfigured to such a state, even creepy. As a viewer, I understood everything perfectly.
And the worst part is the ending, I won’t say to avoid spoilers.
The film has a good message because 7 deadly sins (based on the title) commit almost everything: pride, greed, envy, anger, lust, gluttony, laziness or despondency.
The villain played by Kevin Spacey is no less worried than the main characters, because he knew what he was doing everything for.
No more discussion. Get comfortable and wish you a pleasant viewing, because the film is brilliant.
It’s fair to say that this is the first David Fincher movie I’ve seen. Although the level of atmosphere Fincher is clearly inferior Jonathan Demmy with his "Silence of the lambs", to say that the tape was not a breakthrough, at least silly.
The viewer is constantly turned before the eyes of the number 7 with such frequency that it is no longer the symbolism of this film, but as if the director believes that we have forgotten what goes between 6 and 8. In fact, we realized that the theme of the film is the seven human sins. Events are arranged in seven days - fine, acceptable. But when the house numbers start with the same number and the police station detectives' office is crowned with number 714 (starts with 7!), it already smells of paranoia. No, I'm mocking, of course, but I have a favorite number of 25, and what, I have to spend my life building around this number?
But it's not a single number that's obsessed with narrative. The main characters are opposed to the conflict of generations - a reasonable old man and a mature man with hot blood. Detective Somerset hasn't fired a shot in his 30 years of service and always abides by the law. Detective Mills is driven by emotion and has shot. A mentor and a subordinate who, despite some difference, converge and become friends as they investigate. Play detectives Morgan Freeman and Brad Pitt. Freeman, in my opinion, regularly bathes in the blood of old maidens and this somehow affects him, since I do not remember him young. If Freeman manages to keep the image of a calm person, then Brad Pitt with his impulsivity sometimes went into overplay.
The environment of the film forms a dual approach. On the one hand, the film has the fascination of noir detectives, such as "rain 24/7" or lack of light (I answer, this is Fincher's darkest film of all his filmography). But on the other hand, the tape has a real trump ace that is hidden from prying eyes - the realization that scenes of cruelty and violence are not shown, but the viewer is still unpleasant. Looking at the victims of the Seven Sins, you only need to know the result, and the details of the executions will be superfluous.
It is not only mortal sins that demonstrate the dirt that consumed the city shown. Violence, indifference to what is happening, and residents of this format of life is quite satisfied. However, in this dark atmosphere there is a place for a light ray, which is represented by the wife of Detective Mills – Tracy performed by Gwyneth Paltrow. The scene where Tracy invites Somerset to dinner with her and her husband reveals her as the personification of tenderness. She loves her husband, she is the most important value for Mills and it is with her handout that two detectives find a common language.
The murderer who started the Last Judgment in miniature is John Doe. Let us discard the religious subtext of crime and turn to history. In Anglo-Saxon jurisprudence, the name John Doe is used to denote the anonymity of witnesses. We don't know anything about the killer, he cut off his fingerprints, depersonalizing himself. That is, it can be any resident of the city, who is finished with this model of life. Those victims, by his own admission, did not deserve any particular dislike, but embodied the sins of the city.
But we must pay tribute to the screenwriter Andrew Kevin Walker - he managed to create a truly frightening author's image of a moral freak. All his executions are ingenious. And he always manages to ahead of the police one step ahead, and all this is essentially one big theatrical production, where he is a diva. Needless to say at all, the acting of Kevin Spacey forms a serious fear of this character, where composure goes along with prudence.
The film Fincher deservedly acquired a cult status and popular adoration. Some scenes receive reproductions and references to this day. For example, the famous scene with the victim of gluttony was beaten by the German band Rammstein in the video for the song "Haifisch" ('Shark). As for me, the film "Seven" has opened the vogue for assholes who are always ahead of their opponents. John Kramer from Saws, The Joker from The Dark Knight, Hannibal Lecturer... Yeah, I know Lector was on screen before John Doe, but anyway.
Ironically, not so long ago I reviewed two iconic films that are on the list of best films are next to each other. The Silence of the Lambs by Jonathan Demme and Seven by David Fincher. It was difficult to resist comparing these two masterpieces, both in terms of directing and in the context of acting. Talking about which movie is better is silly and pointless. But such a component as acting can be compared.
In The Silence of the Lambs, Dr. Lecter's mask sits on Hopkins's face as infused. Piercing unblinking eyes, predatory nose. The film is almost thirty years old, and the performance of the main roles in it is considered canonical. It is difficult to imagine another and Clarissa Starling. Squeezed lips, restrained articulation - this is now, after years, a sophisticated viewer realizes that Jodie Foster gave Clarissa herself. Hopkins, an experienced actor and intellectual, worked meticulously on the role, Foster just tried it on herself - and you know, it fit. And if in the first case we observe reincarnation, in the second - it is the competent use of the role of an excellent student, "blue stocking".
Fincher’s Seven is no longer a duo, but a trio. Morgan Freeman is a kind of eternal idol, he is carved fifth on Rushmore Rock. Strangely enough, it's organic everywhere. But it's also limited. As in the case of Jodie Foster, Freeman shows the viewer a sketchy image of a tired but wise grandfather. It is highly predictable not only verbally but also kinetically. Another thing is Pitt. His character changes rapidly, transforms, having gone from an ordinary cop to a greyhound that took a trail. In the finale of the film, he is almost mad, and against his background, the hero of Kevin Spacey suddenly looks almost like a martyr.
“Silence of the lambs” is canonical in its images, this is its weakness and strength. “Seven” surprises with inconsistency, in relation to the characters of Pete and Spacey, the film is ambiguous, plunges into brooding. Therefore, the victory here is still behind the picture of Fincher.
It’s fair to say that this is the first David Fincher movie I’ve seen. Although the level of atmosphere Fincher is clearly inferior to Jonathan Demmy with his “Silence of the Lambs”, to say that the tape was not a breakthrough, at least silly.
- I love going out at night. - Are you romantic? - No, I'm a maniac!
Seven sins. Seven murders. If you think about it, it's not much. Many serial killers have killed dozens of people. And not on screen, but in reality. But a person has only one life, so one murder is a tragedy, there is nothing to say, and if a maniac is a religious fanatic, then the matter generally looks extremely gloomy.
A veteran wanted man and a newcomer are looking for a killer who not only helps people go to the next world, but also gives his deeds a philosophical undertone. Greed, gluttony, envy, anger, lust, laziness, pride. Like, if you get fat, die of gluttony, if you're lazy, die of total muscle atrophy. That's what the maniac from this movie thought. I wonder why there are only seven sins. Why do not they include indifference, drunkenness, sadism as mortal sins?
The film is quite spectacular. There are moments when the details are so realistically transmitted, such a natural sham in terms of the image of disfigured bodies. This is a plus, since this is what we often expect when we want to see a mixture of thriller, detective and horror.
The police look very lazy. I don't know who's better at laziness, Pitt or Freeman. And they're not proud. They were not killed by Spacey’s character.
Honestly, I don't understand if the idea is to make detectives look like yawning and sleepy slackers, or did they play like that? A sad picture.
The plot didn't fascinate. It seems to be interesting how it will end, but I want it to happen as soon as possible so that I can watch and go to sleep. Everything about the investigation itself is boring. As for the activities of a maniac, more interesting, but sometimes better.
Sometimes things play better than people. In 'Seven' well worked out photographic materials from the murder scenes, well executed corpses and scenery, realistic dirt, blood, insects ... and people did not try. Well, Spacey is very good, but it is not enough.
I wanted more. I love when personalities are revealed on the screen, it becomes curious to unravel them even more, to understand, to feel. In this case, we were thrown a certain story with the characters, not allowed to think about the background, put before the fact – and that’s it.
For Pitt's work I put three with a minus, Freeman - four, Spacey - also a four, but with a plus. But decorators and makeup artists, of course, five points, but you can not rely on one, so to speak, technicians.
It’s very strange when everything in the movie goes well, and actors with big names are very disappointing. I don't want to share Spacey with the others because he looked good. I don’t know what kind of failure happened, why it didn’t go, but I can’t put an estimate above three. I love the '90s, this is the color. Yes, there is no color at all, the cops want to sleep, and the viewer also does not sleep. . .
For screenwriter Andrew Kevin Walker, it was a difficult decision to move from his hometown, abandoned somewhere in the vastness of quiet Pennsylvania and settle in the noisy, giant and extremely dangerous New York. However, having shown serious potential in the field of writing, Walker knew perfectly well that he would not be able to realize all his tempting ideas and ideas if he stayed in the province, where it would be extremely difficult to reach influential producers and make promising acquaintances. So, with no other chance of achieving true recognition, the author decided to find a second home in a city that never sleeps, and his first fortune soon struck. Walker was invited to a modest, but extremely active company for the production of slashers, which means that he was immediately allowed to typewriter, in order to begin the creative process without unnecessary delay. But the longer the writer was in the city, the darker his thoughts became and he realized that the senseless massacre in the conveyor mode is not what he really wanted. Walking through the streets of the city and with his own eyes watching what arbitrariness occurs almost in broad daylight, the author conceived to implement the script for a promising detective thriller, involved in seven sins. To do this, Walker had to move to another, more peaceful company, where he managed to get the right to privacy and the opportunity to form his special creative recognition New York, which is not only inspiring, but also eerily frightening. Having finished work on the project, Walker created an unprecedented, audacious precedent, which intrigued a considerable number of serious studio players, but at the same time the gloomy tone of the narrative frightened many eminent directors. And yet, David Fincher was not one of the timid ten directors and still took on 'Seven' thereby creating one of the most extraordinary films of a decade.
Directly the plot of the film introduces us to two completely different detectives, William Somerset (Morgan Freeman) and David Mills (Brad Pitt), who will spend together a very intense and painfully frightening week, because it is they who will uncover a series of crimes committed by a mysterious maniac who is called John Doe (Kevin Spacey). Having considered himself a saint, and almost equal in his imagination with God himself, Dow believes that he came to the big city to administer true justice, guiding the flock on the path of faith. And in order to strengthen his own teaching, Dow decides to punish the guilty in the most cruel way, while emphasizing the seven deadly sins, for weakness to which the victims received their punishment. The maniac acts precisely, leaving no evidence on his own, but making sure that the police get their hands on a strange puzzle that leads from one victim to another. Thanks to such a decision, Dow warms up interest in his person, and the rumors about his crimes become a real urban legend that can intimidate even experienced detectives. The situation is aggravated by the fact that old Somerset is preparing to retire from day to day, and he does not want to delay the investigation, although he understands that it can pull all the nerves and tempered poise from him for years. In turn, the ambitious Mills literally burns with enthusiasm, in view of which he is quite capable of making a mistake, the price of which may be exorbitant.
Fincher’s tape belongs to the category of neonoir, and 'Seven' fully confirms its gloomy status, being a sustained, atmospheric work that tries to drag us into its womb without a trace and let out only when the awareness of everything happening on the screen will form a single strong picture, and the stunning psyche of revelations will be replaced by a clear understanding of why the story should have flowed according to given patterns and not be changed to please the producers who are always afraid of true art decisions. However, fortunately, David Fincher and Brad Pitt perfectly understood the charm of Andrew Kevin Walker’s original plan and did everything necessary to make ' Seven' and remained a work that is not afraid of any blows, tries to be honest with the audience to the limit and if it is necessary to go to a meaningful, merciless and tough conflict, this should be performed in the brightest colors, because otherwise the whole story loses its attractiveness. Of course, it was not easy for the director and his actors to feel all the pressure that Walker put on the story, but it was exactly the artistic challenge when it was necessary to clutch teeth and bring what was started to the end without unnecessary edits and curts to an impressionable audience. New York can be tough, it leaves a bloody trail, and thanks to the plan of Andrew Kevin Walker, we see that this place is not fabulous, this metropolis is able to grow a real horror, and what is written in the script, it is likely not the worst of what is happening on the streets. And not only the Big Apple, but also other million strongholds living according to their own special laws, which do not always have something in common with official norms of law.
In addition to the fascinating detective part, which is able to cause genuine delight among all fans of the genre, 'Seven' also has a magnificent dramatic performance, for which, in addition to David Fincher, Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman were responsible. Until now, their extraordinary duet is considered one of the best in Hollywood cinema, and it is difficult to disagree with this. They don’t give away any crazy emotions, their characters are extremely clear, in some ways even trivial, but you can’t take your eyes off them. Pitt plays a young detective who believes that he will manage to conquer the whole world, Freeman, on the contrary, has seen a lot, is a little cynical and transferred all his accumulated experience to his character. But in this alignment of forces you will not see the boring relationship between teacher and student, since each hero is unusual in his own way. Here there are two quantities, equivalent in influence on the narrative and the dramatic bias of the narrative. To single out someone more simply will not work, because Pitt and Freeman perfectly got used to their images, and with them we get inside the maze, the exit from which can be prohibitively expensive. But do not forget about the third and fourth magnitudes of this story, that is, Gwyneth Peltrow as the wife of Mills, as well as Kaven Spacey. The latter deserves special applause, since in just a few minutes of screen time he reveals unprecedented potential and leaves a bitterness that literally eats into the cortex of consciousness. In this regard 'Seven' just need to take into account and enjoy her exquisite courage and style.

The film 'Seven' 1995 directed by David Fincher, a man who knows how to shoot detective thrillers, really makes you think about a lot, really makes you think about the meaning of life and think about the nature of human actions. After watching the film for the first time in 2011, I had a very strong impression, I was under emotions, especially from the ending of the film.
I love detective thrillers, thrillers, which have intrigue and interesting plot twists and an unexpected ending. This film 'Seven' just falls into this category of films, given the cast that is present in the film - Morgan Freeman, Brad Pitt, Kevin Spacey.
Morgan Freeman plays the role of veteran detective William Somerset, who had only 7 days to retire, but just these days before his departure strange and perverse murders begin to be committed, a young detective David Mills plays Brad Pitt. The characters of Pitt and Freeman are completely opposite - Somerset is calm, thoughtful, well-read, experienced, but also sad person. Mills is young, temperamental, with experience in solving crimes, but at the same time he has outbursts of anger and unbridled character, even surprisingly, they later worked together. Also, given the large age difference between the actors, Brad Pitt looked confident against the background of a more experienced Freeman, already at that time Pitt demonstrated his acting skills, and Morgan Freeman can not be said, as he is always good.
Gwyneth Peltrow played the wife of Mills, in my opinion quite a normal role, even I thought that her character was not confident and was afraid of something, her pregnancy is proof of that - why did she not tell her husband first?
Let us return to the very essence of the film - the seven deadly sins: gluttony, greed, pride, gluttony, laziness, anger, envy. Killer John Doe performed by Kevin Spacey punished each of his victims in accordance with their sins for 7 days, while resorting to the help of literary sources. He decided that he was God and had the right to punish his victims, and he killed them in the most perverted way that even detectives were stumped every time they investigated another murder. John Doe is as crazy as Mills thought he was, and Somerset, on the other hand, thought calling him a psychotic was very rash. The most dangerous thing is a psycho with brains, which John Doe appeared before us.
How well showed his character Kevin Spacey despite the fact that his screen time was small, but it was iconic and revealed the essence of the film. The conversation in the car between Dow, Mills and Somerset was very interesting and meaningful, and Dow made it clear why he committed all these murders. On the one hand, he and his words want to believe, deep down I also thought that the world will not lose anything from the murder of one of the sinners, on the other hand, no one gave him the right to take people’s lives, it is their choice and they live with him. But what was at the end of the film shocked me, really the film was able to intrigue so much that it became even scary with unpredictability, and the last two deadly sins showed all the power of John Doe and his psychological strength.
'Seven' - a very interesting, tense, psychological detective thriller with an intriguing original plot and a charismatic cast.
For behold, a day will come that burns like a furnace; then all the arrogant and the wicked will be like straw, and the day to come will knock them down.
Mal. 4:1)
As you know, this movie could have committed suicide.
The producers put a barrel of commercial calculations to the back of his head, and said - change the finale, it's not for our viewer, so it won't roll. But the movie wasn't that simple. Unafraid of the muzzle, he said in reply: Either I will say what I was done for, or I will not be at all.
And now the movie has a ending. And the finale has a movie that deserves it. This is not another Hollywood thing about two cops and bad guys. Before us the revelation is a flexible and ruthless whip, without sadism and sentiment, denouncing the worst side of our soul and crying: here it is!
Society and sin. Relations between them have become extremely warm today. Just like the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact. Society hopes that it has reconciled itself to sin, has appeased it, having amused it, and the sin has become tame, and all will be well.
All that remains is to overcome fear, hide behind pleasure and forget God, and everything will be completely in order. But it won't. For the sin committed will one day break through the fence. But how can he not do it himself?
Detective thriller (?) drama (?) - introduces us to the monstrous story of a devilishly talented man born in the womb of our society. We nourished him and raised him, and he, realizing what we had become, drew air into his chest and grunted as loudly as he could. And the world moaned in pain.
It was an invented world. Because only through an imaginary world can you scream loudly without shedding real blood. But the cry of an invented world is not invented. This is a real verdict to a real society, which must be heard and accepted until (God forbid) a real maniac prosecutor appears and takes it to real people.
The film calmly, directly and honestly addresses society through a big mouthpiece. He's talking about a fire in our gut so we can put it out. He says our sins are killing us. He says that evil will always be one step ahead, will always rule us and conquer us if we do not understand that it is our own evil. And the fact that Somerset’s peacemaking methods, or the pride of the “cleaner,” still disturb some of us more than the bred mortal sins themselves, hardly speaks in our favor.
The film attracts and makes you feel immense respect for Pitt and Freeman, who not only brilliantly performed the roles entrusted to them, but also did everything so that the most serious idea of this story did not disappear in the endless box office calculations.
Netlenka, a must-see - and especially for those who are afraid of their own soul and therefore do not want to watch.
I'm sorry if I hurt anyone, I'd be happy to be wrong. And help us in time to become better expressed here warning!
Out of grades.
“Seven” from the first minutes makes it clear to the viewer that something positive in the picture and “does not smell”. And this is all Fincher is a rising master of directing, saturated through the “dashing” nineties and the approaching apocalyptic millennium. The latter, it must be admitted, worries the director not for a joke, since this neo-Nonuar standard is simply teeming with religious overtones and a mood of hopelessness.
Somerset and Mills are two opposing detectives working in tandem. They are opposed because they represent two polarities of the human essence: conservatism and wisdom (Somerset) and impulsivity with naivety (Mills). It is such different people who will have to unravel the networks of brutal murders, staged by a cold-blooded and brilliant (to some extent) criminal.
“Seven” is a film from the category of “Silence of the Lambs” and similar genre films, reflecting all those failures of American society in the 70s. This is reflected in the despair of the light and in the psychological mood of all the heroes without exception.
The cast was selected more than successfully. And Freeman and Pitt were, as they say, relatives with roles, where the type of Brad fits the path of a confident and bland detective, and Freeman himself looked very good at the position of mentor-father. In truth, behind all this gloomy atmosphere, all the other minor characters are "drowned in the darkness" of the narrative. This is not always good, but this picture is an exception where such moves are interesting and forgivable.
There will be no honest police, harmless people and details of brutal murders will not be covered with a square. “Seven” is, in a sense, a revelation in which the motives derive from deep philosophical reasoning, which society has raised many, many times. John Doe gives the observer another chance to understand the world order, but if it were not exposed to such an aggressive narrative, it would be even better.

I watched Seven for the first time many years ago and until recently considered it the best movie I’ve ever seen. Now, after reviewing it again and analyzing it more deeply, I don’t think the film is absolutely the best, although I continue to rate it very highly. There are many advantages to this picture.
To begin with, “Seven” is an interesting detective. The film has an exciting, if shocking, plot. All two hours he keeps in suspense and has no problems with the protracted action - to get bored when watching is not necessary.
In addition, the film is very atmospheric, noir – rainy and tense. Impressive entourage for any film is a significant advantage, and for a film with a mystery this is especially important.
Although there is no clear, memorable soundtrack in "Seven", overall the music in it is at a decent level. It does its job, helping to cause and maintain the right emotions, the right mood.
Always a plus when there are some jokes or funny moments in the film, even in the serious. There are few of them in this movie, but everything is in place.
There are no questions about the acting and their selection - everything is at a good level, expected - there have never been any big claims against David Fincher in this regard.
The dialogue is well written and the interaction of the characters is well set. All this is quite realistic and interesting.
But the characteristic that makes the film imperfect – some errors and inconsistencies, manifested in small details. At least if you look carefully, then questions arise in this regard.
But I will return to the positive aspects, which are much more. The film contains interesting thoughts that you can think about after watching. This is one of the most important aspects of a worthwhile work.
The opinions of the characters differ, their views are considered from different positions; the characters argue, and this makes the film, its plot - voluminous, not flat.
Also important for a good work is how the characters change and how they act. Trying not to disclose the plot, I note that the uniqueness of the events in which the heroes are destined to become, will not allow them to remain the same as before.
In general, as I wrote at the beginning, “Seven” is not a perfect film, but in terms of the totality of characteristics it is quite close to that.

Detective David Fincher is considered a classic of cinema, he surprises with his presentation of the investigation, fascinates with the motive of the killer, perfectly attributes religious themes and gives a good duet in the person of Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman. The killer's handwriting follows the circles of Dante's Hell, exposing each sin as a crime, allowing a more sophisticated approach to murder. That's the basis.
In fact, we meet an elderly detective, Morgan Freeman (who has been like this all my life), who needs to close his last case in order to retire. Ah, that classic detective story, when the most exciting case happens the last time. A small grater with the boss and on the shoulders of an experienced employee falls like a snowball, a new employee. It is necessary to train, show the specifics of the work, introduce to the course of things. Reminiscent of the classic dismissal from work or going on vacation: you will not be released until there is a replacement.
It is still a long way from the crime scene, so Fincher in his inimitable manner introduces us to the main characters. The conflict of generations, different views on life and age create a certain halo between Morgan and Brad. Views and new methods also play a role. Young blood, fresh eyes and experience, old but proven opportunities for solving crimes. Morgan doesn't like such a student, but he tries to tell him the truth. It's a real threat, it's not picture textbooks, so theory is a theory, but when it comes to practice, it's the most dangerous, scary and mysterious thing.
After the presentation of the hero, the viewer is led to the crime scene. Murder, where an unknown maniac leaves "Easter eggs", denoting mortal sins. The symbolism resembles the painting “Zodiac” by the same Fincher. In such an intriguing presentation, the director conveys to the audience the main thoughts: a terrible murder, the criminal leaves clues, then the deduction of investigators goes. The elements of the crime allow you to immerse yourself in this mystery, to puzzle over the murder and appreciate the grace. The scenes are not for everyone, there is even a comparison with “Saw” by James Wan, and against this background the reaction of detectives.
The influence of sadism on different generations is well represented. Freeman, who has seen a lot, builds analogies of crimes, tries to link the puzzles into one picture, but still hides the shock state. And inexperienced Pitt has reduced his arrogance, quieted down and understands that the case is serious. It is amazing how the first stage affects the characters, changing them beyond recognition.
The main storyline was shown, and then secondary characters are woven into the plot, the role of which shows that the main characters can be in another role, that, despite all the horror of the work, they are also kind, cheerful people. Such a pleasant offshoot after the horror serves as a balm for the soul and soothing, but Fincher has it all for a reason, so the main plot twist is still ahead.
Crimes lead the police by the nose, it seems that they will always be second, come to the finished crime scene, but, well, these are not stupid characters, they are smart, calculating people who can turn the game in their favor. Dynamically and intriguingly, the film throws us from one experience to another, gives places a good action and leads to the first unexpected turn.
Impressions cannot coexist with logic. Questions, questions that require answers. Elements of confusion, imaginary victory and wariness sneak up on viewing. The end is near, and you still can’t understand the meaning of the action, when all of a sudden... it was incredible. Throughout the film, follow one storyline, simultaneously revealing the characters to disarm the viewer in the final. All right.
The killer thinks he's God? Why does he punish sinners? The motives are very religious, which leads to thoughts about the books of Dan Brown. An intriguing film, unusual punitive measures, a good acting duet Freeman-Pitt and a bonus sweet Gwyneth Paltrow. And also surprised by the appearance of R. Lee Ermi, familiar to us on the "All-metal shell".
The thriller is quite quirky. The game of Brad Pitt was not impressed: he rushes to seem smart, in addition to which he makes a number of mistakes and eventually understands that the latter should not be. Love for him exists solely as the adoration of his wife, while for a maniac - in the role of hatred for losers and the expression of world domination.
If we consider the directing separately, the methods of murder are terrible and bloody, then what a sin is punishment. But in general, the plot is truly banal and recognizable - Dante, 12 circles of hell, a library, dismemberment of bodies and agony. From the first page of Dante begins the chase.
Pitt is always late, a new fight begins, more and more victims. To the point that a frantic chase on the prairie of the Texas steppe ends in the defeat of the detective. He lost, but won a second later. Evil is over. Before us is a rather interesting thriller of the 90s, with gloomy special effects and a medieval epic of the personification of hell.

Two extremes: temper and calm, emotions and calculation. In this film, two opposites collide, the young and ambitious David Mills and the elderly and experienced William Somerset. By the will of fate, they will become partners and solve a complex and cruel crime. But the movie "Seven" is not a simple detective about two partners who, evidence after evidence, by string, get to the criminal. This film is the knowledge of how much a person, in pursuit of his passions, is mired in sins.
The central idea of the film is how sinfulness has become commonplace in our choking society. And if you look around, this film is a direct reflection of our reality. It is no secret that society has ceased to live according to the old canons. But is everything as scary as the main antagonist of the film describes us? Undoubtedly shown to us, but not named city is a real hotbed of sin and vice. And for the most part, all these sins and all this vice are explained by a person by the fact that “it is necessary to live somehow.” The film shows us that the essence of a person can not be absolutely holy, or completely mired in sins. The essence of a person is variable, depending on the circumstances in which the person is placed. And if he has a task to survive, then, alas, he will no longer be a person.
The atmosphere in the film is such that you can’t get away from it. The darkness of the neonoir takes over your mind, the accompanying music contributes to this. But there's also a flaw. Many dialogues seem too stupid, which is translated as in the original. However, this film deserves wide attention.
Let me tell you about the 6 out of 10. It’s overstated because I really like Freeman as an actor and as a film genre. In short – if you are not a fan of the genre, you can safely pass by this picture.
Now in order.
The beginning of the film was very pleasant and intrigued. Two detectives with obviously completely different characters and views on life become partners. Here we have murders on religious grounds. It would seem that we have “True Detective” in the form of an hour and a half film, an expanse for demonstrating conflicts, but no. The main characters are not revealed at all. After 15-20 minutes of the film, they become almost best friends, and completely cut off all hopes that the film will be a masterpiece. The whole movie is left to sit and think - why is Somerset (Morgan Freeman) so unsociable and introverted? Why don’t people like him and want him to retire soon? What relationship does Mills (Brad Pitt) have with his wife (you can scrape the power of 5 minutes of scenes with these characters and a few phrases he said to each other)? And a whole bunch of questions that are completely unanswered in the film.
But why, then, does Mills' wife get any attention if she doesn't have any influence on the plot? I asked myself the same question for an hour and a half.
That’s when we came to the main thing, the gun (crossed out) ... to Fincher’s howitzer, which he hung on the wall. This large-caliber gun, which the creators of the picture wave in front of us for an hour and a half and which spoiler the ending, simply cannot go unnoticed. In fact, Mills' wife is only needed in the film to "shoot" at the end. And here the problem is not even in the gun itself, but in the fact that it was possible to somehow disguise it so that it was not so much striking.
I expected that in the last few minutes of the film, we would be shown the lives of the detectives after the case was solved. It will show you how it affected them (just couldn’t help but). And now I am excited that now I will get at least a little reflection for the brain, recognize the characters ... began the credits.
As a result, we get a very good and promising start, smoothly turning into a weak, with a lot of illogical details and undisclosed characters, the middle and an incomprehensible finale that completely demolishes all the logic and idea of the film. The question arises: where exactly are 7 punishments for 7 mortal sins? Isn't that what the whole movie is all about? I only counted 6.
The most interesting thing is that if you read the alternative endings that were discussed during the creation of the film, then you can find quite logical options that fit into the concept of 7 deaths for 7 mortal sins. You can also find information that Walker (the writer) planned to approach the disclosure of the main characters in more detail, but something did not work (obviously, the notorious timekeeping played a role).
To sum up, you can put a rating of 4 out of 10, just for the efforts of the writer who tried to promote a cool noir story (the key word “tried”) and the overall style of the film. Well, and the depressing atmosphere can be smeared from head to toe. I, as I wrote above, throw another 2 points, purely for my subjective reasons.
6 out of 10
And yes, it is useless to watch this film without the already existing baggage of books from the same film. Moreover, Freeman’s character loaded Pitt’s character with books for reading. These books are addressed to viewers, of course. And Pitt’s hero hardly mastered at least a quarter of these books.
So first of all, of course, this is Alighieri with his divine comedy. The maniac from this film took on a sacred supposedly mission to remind people of their temporary stay in the world of the living and how little separates them from the afterlife. And this unknown begins to methodically kill his victims, creating an allusion to the next of the seven deadly sins - gluttony, greed, pride, laziness, lust, envy and anger. Moreover, the finale, if you listen to the dialogue, moreover, in the original, becomes really terrible from its hopelessness.
It rains all the time here. Morgan Freeman as Charon from Divine Comedy guides the impulsive Mills-Dante on the trail of the devil John Doe. Moreover, the interchange has been changed places with a tie from Alighieri. John Doe is not the name of Spacey’s hero. This is the name of pathologists unknown or unidentified in the morgue male. There are a lot of nuances in the film. Sometimes some scenes seem to carry nothing. Here you have the married life of Mills, here are the secondary characters that create the background.
The film is heavy and clearly not for everyone. Inexperienced viewers may even seem frightening. But in fact, the film is really good and worked out. You can’t call him talentless, although it does not carry a special semantic load. It is rather an appendix to older books - The Divine Comedy," Cantrebury Stories, Marquis de Sade, etc. These books have everything. The rest is just a modern wrapper.
Personally, I recommend this film to watch after reading the books and the animated Dante Hell. You can also see it. Where dreams lead”. After that, Spacey's character doesn't seem so smart after all. He's pedantic, but only in his insane obsession. The inhabitants will see in all this only murder, the audience - references to religion. But the work is quality.
