How terrible it is that one person means so much, embodies so much in himself. Colin McCullough, Singing in the Thorn Falling in love begins with the fact that a person deceives himself, and ends with the fact that he deceives another. Oscar Wilde, “Portrait of Dorian Gray” How empty it is when there is no creature that fills the whole world. How true it is that a beloved being becomes a god! How can it be understood that God would be jealous if he, the father of all things, had not created the universe for the soul and the soul for love? - Victor Hugo, "Les Miserables" We all fall in love easily—a slight preference is natural; but few of us have the courage to truly love without encouragement. Jane Austen, Pride and Prejudice It's an amazing love movie. I can't tell you enough about her. I watched in one breath. I recommend it. Thank you.💋.
An incredibly sweet and very touching film by Joel Hopkins about a love that might not have happened, because these two people, Harvey and Kate, have already rushed from life, and know what pain, fatigue and disappointments are, about London, the way it was (and, I fear, will not be), about the fact that people tend not to trust, but then they still thaw, become themselves and still start to love life, themselves and others in it, to see its beauty and joy, even though for so many years you have passed by all this, because all this (love and joy) was already, and then it was filled with mundane pain and then it would have been filled with endless pain. This film gives a breath of air and hope, reminds of beauty and happiness, and how important it is to remember that happiness can come whenever you want, the main thing is not to lie to yourself and remain a Human. Wonderful script and absolutely amazing Hoffman and Thompson, together and separately. Great actors and extraordinary personalities. That's why it worked. A rare diamond in modern times. A movie about people and for people, a movie with a capital letter, which is almost gone.
Life always offers another opportunity for happiness.
Accidentally came across in the open spaces of the Internet for this film on the evening when the mood was at zero and life seemed gray and meaningless. A brief, sad evening on the couch in search of a soulful film, I found Harvey's Last Chance.
This is a story that takes place in London about two single people in their 50s. Emma Thompson's character is a single woman who has only a mother who calls her several times a day and works to collect data at the airport. Dustin Hoffman's character is a lonely man who once divorced and broke up with his daughter. Destiny brings these two people together. They spend the whole day together, and during this day both develop sympathy for each other.
Each of the characters should not be afraid of the changes that began to occur in their lives thanks to each other and do not miss the very opportunity!
Great performance of the main actors of chic Emma Thompson and Dustin Hoffman!!
What is this movie about in short?! Yes, that fate always gives a chance for happiness, the main thing is not to miss it and not be afraid to grab it! and even when it seems that happiness is lost on the way - nothing is lost yet!!
Watch this movie!!! This story will warm and cheer you up! And the mood will be great!! Guaranteed!!
We are alone because we are afraid to admit our loneliness.
It so happens that many people incorrectly set their own priorities and devote themselves to, say, work distant from their family so that one day they realize that they do not know anything about the people living in their home. Or here’s another situation – in an attempt to realize his childhood dream, a person fails and instead of approaching the problem from the other side, he puts an end to it and decides to do something more “grounded”. As a result, there are thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of unfortunate people whose lives have been derailed because they were not persistent enough. And of course, wizards from Hollywood could not pass by such a burning topic, and therefore from year to year they produce films dedicated to such people and our today’s guest is a vivid example of this. So this is Harvey's Last Chance.
The story tells how strange it is about two representatives of Homo sapiens. The first is Harvey Shine, whose name was put in the title of the picture, and the second is an elderly woman Kate Walker, who by providence was destined to meet the hero of Dustin Hoffman. All in all, classic.
Where are you going? Don't go. Although the main plot is full of templates, but this film has one advantage that distinguishes it from its product genre and is that this film is as close to real life as possible. It would seem that such a statement can be applied to every second film whose genre is defined as drama, but this is not quite true. In most Hollywood melodramas there is an explicit or hidden hint of a fairy tale. An unhappy girl who does not know what she wants from life meets a handsome prince and her life is immediately getting better, well, or an unhappy man who is in debt thinking about suicide, but a charming stranger dissuades him from this act, and later becomes his life partner. In principle, this is not so bad, because in the life of a simple layman there are no, well, or practically no miracles, and therefore he hopes for a miracle and world cinema this miracle gives him. And that is why the demand for dramas that are as close to life as possible is not so great. Ultimately, the life of a layman is like a drama in itself, so why else in the movies? Just to believe in despair? Yes and no. Ultimately, these films are made with only one purpose (abandoning the desire to make money, of course), namely, to show that everything is not so bad in this world. And if you have not yet met a person whose heart will beat in unison with yours, then you will definitely meet him, the main thing is not to miss your chance.
“It’s all great of course,” a skeptical viewer will say ironically, “but what about the movie?” Nothing has been said about his story. Yeah, it really wasn't. But there is nothing to say – Harvey is a man who had everything he needed for happiness. He had a loving family, he had a job, but Harvey wanted to be a jazz musician. And the more Harvey tried to fulfill his dream, the more he distanced himself from his family and eventually lost them. The wife, taking her daughter with her, went to another, and Harvey himself gave up his dream and all he had left was to write music for advertisements dedicated to dog food. As for Kate, we don’t know much about her, but what we know sounds disappointing, because despite the fact that Kate lives with her elderly mother and despite her friends who are constantly trying to find her a fiancé, Kate is terribly lonely. She is insecure in her own abilities and therefore, instead of trying to fulfill a long-held dream, namely to write a book, she goes to seminars where she allegedly teaches this. Kate is afraid to take the first step towards a man she likes and she is uncertain whether she will be interested in him or whether he will be interested in her. And how does it fit into the circle of his friends and will it not be superfluous? And as a result, two outcasts who have become disillusioned with life will meet in a regular diner somewhere on the outskirts of London and this meeting will change their lives. But for better or worse, you will know only if you watch this film to the end.
Summing up, I want to say that “Last chance Harvey” is a fairly simple drama, but taken from the heart. Yes, the film will not be unexpected plot twists, and the story itself will develop slowly and slowly, but at the same time what is happening looks with interest, which already speaks in favor of this film.

I can hardly imagine Van Damme, Schwarzenegger or Stallone in a movie like this, but Dustin Hoffman is easy. My beloved Hoffman never belonged to a cohort of wall-biting and muzzle-biting young people, action stars and blockbusters, but Hoffman always knew how to more accurately and accurately hit the feelings of the audience, disturbing their minds, signaling something to them, calling for something and encouraging. And with age, which is especially valuable, this great actor has not lost his abilities.
There is nothing special about this movie. "Here and met two loneliness" (he separated from his wife, the daughter grew up and lives his life; she did not build his life and lives under the watchful eye of a bothersome mother) and still catches.
I think it can be explained quite simply. When a movie tells about love, passion, an incredible story of young people, it is always fascinating, interesting, vivid. However, when a good director and brilliant actors tell truthfully and without beauty about a second chance for people who seemingly decided to live out their century alone, the viewer is invariably overwhelmed with the hope that, no matter what ordeal he has to experience now, one day everything may change, one day, a person may appear in his life who sweeps away loneliness from his life with a broom.
Dustin Hoffman is incredibly nice here. One scene of emulating stiff Englishmen in a cafe is worth it. But Emma Topmson (the Emma I love more and more) is beautiful. I will note that she is very good at such "duet films", where all the salt in the relationship is "He and She". Suffice it to recall the brilliant short film "Lunch Song" (2010).
Maybe this is old age, but I am increasingly beginning to appreciate such leisurely, soulful, warm pictures.

A friend suggested watching this movie. When I looked at it, I asked him:
Such a good movie! And strangely, they are not young, and you associate yourself with them. Why is that? ...
He replied, “Thompson: My father had arrhythmia.”
Hoffman: It happens to young people too.
Actually, I'd think it would be logical to end up with Harvey dying on the stairs and not showing up. The question of the value of time and the realization of people's chances would be more acute. And so ... give hope, as in "Moscow does not believe in tears": "Life after ... only begins, I now know for sure."
The exact association, yes – Moscow does not believe in tears? And there, and there is a real optimism with a sweep! And "Difficulties of Translation" is also a true parallel.
It’s a little bit of a conversation, but I think a lot has been said about the movie. Anxiety of the convergence of two loneliness. The difficulty of translating oneself into the language of another, the difficulty of admitting someone into oneself. And an optimistic escape to the New. You can't escape! Because you still hold yourself, persuade not to bless, do not let go to the Beginning:
- Let me tell you a secret. I'm trying to organize an escape. I need an accomplice. First you need to get out of the bar, then the hotel, then the city, then the country. Are you with me? ("Difficulties of translation")
It so happens that reality, dead, boring, deafened by emptiness and twisted by indifference, takes away a person’s wings and with them the dream of flying. But the opposite happens: a person cuts off his wings. Day after day - imperceptibly, on a feather and as if the pain does not smell. The first feather is love, the second is family, the third is a dream, the fourth is hope.
How and why does this happen? Perhaps, after going through a series of personal failures, you suddenly begin to think that loneliness is not a problem at all, but protection. And you put on his armor to keep the alarms and dangers out. Yeah, it's more lonely in the case. It is as if you are prepared in advance for the fact that you will be out of place, miss, disappoint, be disappointed.
His straw is so soft, his shirt so close, and if you take it off, you'll freeze. Winds of change will blow, they will tear off the mask of confident trouble, the cosiness of self-habitation will crack at the seams. And there will be a crash. And fear. And pain. Anxiety, waves. Not at all. Doubts will fall on your shoulders.
However, these seams will suddenly give a chance to penetrate into your long-unventilated world someone’s confident smile. And someone’s words, someone’s music, someone’s life will flow inside freely, as if the spaces there.
When and why does this happen? What are the conditions of liberation and happiness? Probably faith. You see how I wrote!!! With doubt...
Vera. Not the one who is closer, not the one who is... But the one that is far away, heavy, incredibly dangerous and amazingly responsible - in another person.
