"It's not just you, Murray!" - the second student work of the film director Martin Scorsese, which was filmed by him under the influence of the French New Wave. It was in it that Scorsese first addressed the topic that became his hallmark - gangster cinema.
The main character of the film is an American of Italian descent Murray (Ira Rubin), tells the audience about his youth, when he, along with his friend Joe (Sam DeFasio) traded bootlegging. However, the viewer will easily see those moments of Murray’s biography, about which the main character does not even know (for example, about the infidelities of Murray’s wife with Joe and other actions of the “friend”).
However, in my opinion, the short film attracts not content, but form. The film begins with the appeal of the main character, breaking the “fourth wall”, to the viewer – another signature technique of Scorsese (in addition to black and white and work with stop frames, which Martin began to use even with previous work). Even the soundtrack also plays an important role (which is only worth the moment when Murray winks at the beat of the music).
The script was written by Martin Scorsese and his university friend, Mardic Martin. Subsequently, their creative tandem will create a dozen more films.
Also, for the first time, Martin Scorsese shot his own mother in the episode Katrina Scorsese (which is better known to the modern audience for the films “Good Guys”, “King of Comedy”, “Casino”).
By and large, “It’s not just you, Murray!” came out a good “breaking pen” for the master of crime tapes Martin Scorsese.
