Cinemaphobia Within the framework of the main competition of the MIFF was shown the film by Evgeny Pashkevich “Gulfstream under an iceberg”. Difficult for most viewers, it may seem a little abstruse, boring and boring, on the other hand, it is the most delicious dish for any critic. For a film critic, this film is an ideal analytical construction with a large number of details and features. But we will not thrash in the nuances and stir up the hidden meanings and walk on the surface, especially since the plot is very deep.
It is divided into three novels passing at different times. All three stories, however, take place in the same city, Riga, the capital of Latvia. All the novels are related to the legend of Adam’s first wife, Lilith. Adam did not recognize this woman, despite the fact that she, unlike Eve, seduced by the serpent, escaped original sin. She has no soul, what she does is neither good nor bad. She can take on any form and submit to her will men.
The first novel shows the story of the Dutch artist Van Dyck (Ville Haapasalo), who came to Riga to his friend by correspondence. In his house he meets Lilith in the form of a housekeeper, she takes the form of his wife and thereby seduces him.
In the second novel, the main character, one of the best graduates of the church school (Danila Kozlovsky), comes to his teacher and confesses his sin to him. He was seduced by the bride of a friend, his friend went mad, and she sailed him and abandoned him.
The third story is even more confusing and confusing. It’s about an unnamed artist (Alexei Serebriakov) who lives in Riga in the 1990s. The hero of Serebryakova was able to resist the temptations of Lilith. The only plus of this story is the excellent performance of the actor who best portrayed what the director wanted.
There are two thoughts after this film. First, the director is catastrophically afraid of women, and he has some complexes for this. The second is to add even more entanglement, it uses cross-cutting, which is not fun at all, and makes the film lengthy. This film can be loved only by film critics, but having analyzed the picture on the shelves, they will forget it. Although, for beginner film critics, the tape is a good textbook for analyzing films. That, as they say, is a different story.
Conclusion: the film “Gulfstream under the iceberg” is a philosophical parable that will be interesting only to film professionals, the mass audience of this film will never understand.
