I’m usually very bad at distorting the classics, I’m firmly convinced that any work already has an author. You don’t need a second husband in bed. So either you film everything as it is written, or don't climb your hooves, hanger. Disney in general is a very false and hypocritical company that beats anyone for its copyright, and itself earned billions on twisted adaptations of the classics, for which it did not pay a penny. However, in this case, an exception can be made, there are reasons for it. The fact is that the original fairy tale of Andersen is not at all so good that you can be offended by its twisting. Ask yourself, have you read this story? Or do you only know her firsthand? There are so many flaws and outright nonsense in it that it is not a sin to rewrite such a classic. The witch there is not a working character of the story, she only gave a potion to the heroine and later a dagger to the sisters, and that's all, she has no development, her ending. The mermaid has not one, but two motivations: to get the love of the prince and to get the soul. The presence of multiple causes in a work almost always makes each of them inconclusive. There is so much talk about the soul that the question arises – does she need a prince? In the fairy tale there is an unnecessary sadistic detail - the heroine was painful to walk like on knives, but she could not scream because there is no voice. Is that in a children's fairy tale? All the steps of the plot lead to a tragic denouement, but when it happens, there is a meaningless epilogue with the air sisters from somewhere taken, who wipe out that children should behave well. This ending is so delusional that it was crushed by critics during the life of the author, it was not taken in any film adaptation. Based on this, we recognize that Disney had the moral right to do everything there. The witch was given a full-fledged role, the image of the rival also earned, and the image of the sea king played. The religious nonsense was completely cut out, the nonsense about the sisters of the air, too. And notice that changing the ending from the heroine's death to the banal "They Lived Happily Long Time" was not as trivial as one might expect. Exposed the rival, managed to kiss, survived – no, it was done wrong. The ending of the cartoon turned out to be tense, rich, the heroes were threatened with real danger, the confrontation was on edge. It was beautiful and powerful. However, I cannot give a high assessment. Because it's a remake of not only fairy tales, but also of the "Underwater Princess" anime from the '70s. Almost everything was better in him. And here - scored a significant part of the timing with moronic cartoons, unnecessary annoying operetta. The underwater kingdom was hardly shown. The roles of the sisters were removed from the plot, although they could have disrupted the wedding, not some animals. In general, it turned out to be pretty much on soap. The leaky tale was turned into a leaky cartoon.
