Once upon a time there was a great actor, director, screenwriter, producer and so on, Charles Chaplin. He came out of poverty, made his way to the movies, became famous, he had mistresses, wives, children. He had a conflict with the US authorities. Here's the approximate content of the film. What did the creators want to say or emphasize? There's no answer. Probably nothing definite. I feel like I read a sketch of someone’s biography. And in the life of Chaplin a lot of sides and faces that can be revealed and shown on the screen. For example, how he began to add lyrical moments to his films. As the parents of the boy who starred at Chaplin, spent all the money earned by his son. How Chaplin was innovating in film. How Chaplin was pressured over the “Great Dictator.” In the film, the last moment is revealed in two lines of dialogue. By and large, such important points have been discarded. You could argue that everything important in the film will not fit. That's true, but that's why biographies usually focus on something very important, something stands out. And in addition, “1492” has a similar timekeeping, and the creators somehow managed to accommodate the main points of the biography (successfully, another question). You might want to watch the movie as a biopic instead of reading a book or Wikipedia. But even in this case, the film is not satisfactory. Many stages of Chaplin’s life are simply omitted. From the film you can get the impression that after the “Lights of the city” Chaplin did not shoot anything. That's not at all true. In the end, the film did not work, it was empty. I found the most interesting biographical titles at the end, which tell about the lives of people close to Chaplin.
