I watched the new film by Italian director Nanni Moretti under the title “The Sun of the Future” (for some reason it is called “Great Magic”) / Il sol dell’avvenire, 2023. The film is devoted to the reaction of the Italian Communist Party (ICP) to the Hungarian events of 1956, which is depicted here somewhat differently than it was in reality, but in the film there is a lot of conventional. The main characters - the secretary of the local branch Ennio (Silvio Orlando) does not support the Hungarians, while his wife Vera (Barbara Bobulova) is entirely on their side. At the beginning of the film, we see director Giovanni (Nanni Moretti) telling the crew about the film, one of the members of the group does not even know that there was once a Communist Party in Italy, in principle, it exists now, although since then it has undergone several reorganizations and renaming, but the young man does not know). Filming is not very successful, at some point the money runs out and the French producer Pierre (Matieu Amalric) is even arrested, Giovanni and his wife, who before this film always produced his films, find Korean producers (an allusion to the success of Korean cinema?), shooting continues. However, not everything goes smoothly in life - the wife of Giovanni Paola (Margherita Bui) has long been dissatisfied with marriage, even goes to a psychologist, but can not decide to leave her husband, although she rented a separate apartment. Their daughter Emma (Valentina Romani) has fallen in love with a very elderly Pole Jerzy (Jerzy Stur) and is even going to marry him. Paola at this time works as a producer on the set of another director's film, which at one point intervenes and Giovanni. Well, things are going awry. The film is very interesting, but not everyone will be interested, such is Nanny Moretti, although in Italy the film was widely discussed in the press and was even named Italian film of the year. During the discussion, it was pointed out that the film contains quotes from films by famous directors (Fellini, Demi, Cassavetes and others), as well as self-citations from other films by Moretti (as, for example, his focus on shoes, love of swimming, dancing, etc.). At the end of the demonstration, he gathered his favorite actors.
By the way, the title of the film is a line from an Italian partisan song from the time of the WWII, the melody on which it is written, I think everyone will know:
The wind is whistling, and the blizzard is furious.
Shoes are leaky, but you still have to go.
To conquer the red spring,
Where the sun of the future rises!
.. . To conquer the red spring,
Where the sun of the future rises!
