Belarusian journalist and writer Svetlana Aleksievich was born in Ukraine, in Stanislav (now Ivano-Frankivsk) on May 31, 1948. His mother is Ukrainian, his father was a military man and, after his demobilization, the family finally settled in his homeland in one of the villages of Belarus, where they began to work as teachers of a local school. After graduating from high school, Svetlana Alexievich works in the editorial office of the district newspaper in Narovl, Gomel region, and then enters the journalism faculty of Minsk State University in 1967. While studying at the university, Svetlana Alexievich continues active work in the press and becomes a repeated laureate of not only republican but also all-Union competitions.
After graduation, Svetlana Alexievich is sent to work in a district newspaper in the city of Birch, Brest region. A year later, she already works in the Minsk Republican “Rural newspaper”. After that, she became first a correspondent, and then head of the department of the journal “Neman”, the body of the Union of Writers of Belarus.
However, the fame of Svetlana Alexievich brought her novel “War is not a woman’s face”, written by her in 1983. The manuscript lay on the shelf in the editorial office for two years. The author was accused of excessive pacifism, naturalism and belittling the image of women and her role in the Great Patriotic War. Two years later, it was published in the journal “October”, “Roman-gazette”, a separate edition in the “Soviet writer” and the republican edition “Mastatsk litaratura”. After the publication of the novel “War has no woman’s face”, the reader’s opinion said its weighty word and the second book by S. Alexievich “The Last Witness” (1985) had the same positive reader response. Both of these books by an outstanding Soviet and Belarusian writer were repeatedly reprinted in the USSR and abroad.
They were followed by S. Aleksievich’s book Zinc Boys (1989), which tells about the tragic fate of young boys sent to the war in Afghanistan. Despite the relevance of the above material, a political court was organized in Minsk in 1992, which was suspended under the influence of an indignant public. Then there were the books Enchanted with Death (1993) and Chernobyl Prayer (1997). Svetlana Alexievich belongs to Peru and the novel “The Wonderful Deer of the Eternal Hunt”, which tells readers about the eternal theme of human love. . /
