Alexander Borisovich Godunov was born on November 28, 1949 on the island of Sakhalin (USSR). He began to study ballet at the age of nine at the Riga State Ballet School, where Mikhail Baryshnikov became his fellow student and friend. After graduation, Alexander Godunov performed in the troupe of the Moscow Classical Ballet, and in 1971 he took the stage of the Bolshoi Theater, where in the next few years, among others, he performed the roles of Siegfried in the Swan Lake by P.I. Tchaikovsky, Hose in the Carmen Suite by J. Bize and R.K. Shchedrin, Ivan the Terrible in Ivan the Terrible to the music of S.S. Prokofiev. In 1973 he received the gold medal of the Moscow International Ballet Competition. In August 1979, while on tour abroad, Alexander Godunov refused to return to the Soviet Union, becoming a "non-returnee." Soon he began to perform in the troupe of the American Ballet Theatre under the direction of Mikhail Baryshnikov. In the cinema, Alexander Godunov first starred in the USSR - in the fantastic musical of Leonid Kvinikhidze "June 31", and in Hollywood he made his debut in the detective tape "Witness" (1985), playing Amish farmer Daniel Hokhleitner. It is worth noting that Harrison Ford was in the lead role. But perhaps the most famous role of Alexander Godunov is the blonde terrorist Karl from John McTirnan’s action movie Die Hard, in which the main character was played by Bruce Willis.
Alexander Godunov died suddenly on May 18, 1995 at his home in West Hollywood.
