Composer Igor Stravinsky was born on June 17 (5 - in the style) of June 1882 in Oranienbaum (Russia), in the family of the famous opera singer F. Stravinsky. At the age of nine, he played the piano and began to study composition theory on his own. In 1900-05 Igor Stravinsky studied at the law faculty of St. Petersburg University, and in 1903-05 he was engaged in composition under the guidance of N.A. Rimsky-Korsakov, with whose son he studied. Under the strong influence of the mentor, Stravinsky’s early works were written, including piano plays, Fantastic Scherzo, and a fantasy for the Fireworks orchestra. Sergey Diaghilev visited the premiere of "Scherzo", on whom the talent of the young musician impressed, and he ordered Stravinsky ballet for production in "Russian Seasons" in Paris. Thus appeared "Firebird" (1910), later - "Petrushka" (1911) and "Sacred Spring" (1913), which brought the composer world fame. Stravinsky spent the years of the First World War in Switzerland, where he created the opera Nightingale and The Story of a Soldier. In 1918, he received a new order from Diaghilev for the ballet Pulchinella. From this work in the work of Stravinsky begins to dominate the line of “neoclassicism”. In 1924, Stravinsky made his debut as a pianist, and in 1925 he performed as a conductor. In addition to working for the theater, he composes works and other genres.

In 1939, he finally moved from France to the United States and settled in Los Angeles. In the late 1940s – early 1950s, Stravinsky’s creative manner underwent a change, he became interested in the European “vanguard”. The composer also paid great attention to spiritual music; a turning point for him was Mass (1948). Among the most significant works of this period are the cantata Sacred Chantlets (1956), the ballet Agon (1957), and The Funeral Chants (1966).
