In 1904-1907 he was a student of an engraver artist, then an engraver in Elizavetgrad. Since 1907 - actor of dramatic tour groups in Uman, Odessa, Mogilev, Elizavetgrad. Since 1915 – actor and director of the Moscow film companies Savva, Chimera and others. Since 1917 - director of the film firm I. Yermolyev, since 1918 - director of the All-Russian photo-cinema department, head of the department of theaters and spectacles of Thea-Narkompros, director of the Communist drama studio, artistic director and director of the exemplary mobile theater of the RSFSR N5, member of the Board and director of the film-Moscow partnership. Since 1922 - director of the film studio "Proletkino" and "Goschino". From 1926 to 1928 he directed the Prometheus Film Studio in Berlin and the Phobus Film Studio in Paris. In 1928-1935 - director of the film studio "Sovkino" and teacher of VGIK. In 1935-1945 - director of film studios "Mejrabpomfilm", then - "Soyuzdetfilm", since 1945 - "Mosnauchfilm". 1955-1956 – Director of the Lithuanian Film Studio.
