Jaco Van Dormael, Belgian actor, screenwriter, film director and producer, was born in Ixel on February 9, 1957. Due to the birth trauma, his birth was not easy, but Jaco survived and since then he perceives his life as a wonderful gift.
Jacquot studied at the Brussels School of Performing Arts, then graduated from the Paris National Higher School Louis Lumiere. He is an excellent director of children's performances in the circus and theater.
Jaco Van Dormel began his career as a clown. It was a pleasure to hear the children laugh. Then he tried himself as a director of short films, but did not count on earnings. So, in 1980, he directed the short film “Maedeli-La-Breche”, which won an Oscar, in the 1981 film “Stade” (a report of their Olympic Games for people with disabilities), which received the “Golden Katsudei”, at the film festival in Rennes, the following year the short film “L’Imitateur”, awarded for best documentary/short film at the film festival in Brussels. Jaco Van Dormel's next work was the documentary Sortie de secours (1983), then he made the short film E pericoloso sporgersi (1984), which earned him the main prize at the Clermont-Ferrand Film Festival and the mini-film De Boot (1985).
Jacot’s debut as a full-length film director took place when he was thirty-four years old with the film Toto Hero. The picture did not fit into any current trend, but, nevertheless, the Toto-Hero at the Cannes Film Festival was awarded the Golden Camera. So Jaco Van Dormel became famous.
Five years later, he made his second film, Day Eight, which received a Golden Globe nomination. The third full-length film "Mr. Nobody" Jaco shot in 2009. This painting at the IFF in Venice was nominated for the Golden Lion award.
Jaco Van Dormel is married to Michelle De Me, a choreographer and ballerina. His older brother Pierre, who died in 2008, was a guitarist and jazz composer. /
