Alexander Petrov began his work in the theater while still a student of the Leningrad State Conservatory named after N.A. Rimsky-Korsakov. His pre-diploma performance - Tchaikovsky's opera "Iolanta" - he staged in the Academic Maly Opera and Ballet Theater (now named after Mussorgsky). In 1979, he staged the first production of J. Menotti’s opera Medium in Russia.
