The Who is best known in the UK for a series of singles supported by illegal radio stations such as Radio Caroline. The first one was released in January 1965 as I Can't Explain. The albums My Generation, A Quick One and The Who Sell Out were commercial successes. The first two are in the top five national charts. The first single to enter the top 40 of the US charts in 1967 was the song "Happy Jack", a year later in the top ten gets "I Can See for Miles". The band is taking part in the Woodstock Festival. In 1969, the release of the album Tommy, which for the first time entered the top ten American charts. He was followed by "Live at Leeds", "Who's Next", "Quadrophenia", "The Who By Numbers", "Who Are You" and "The Kids Are Alright".
In 1978, Moon died at the age of 32, after which the band released two successful studio albums Face Dances and It's Hard in 1981 and 1982, respectively, with drummer Kenny Jones. In 1983, the group disbanded. The band then banded together to perform on Live Aid, the band's twenty-five-year tour in 1989, and on the Quadrophenia tour in 1996 and 1997. In 2000, the three remaining members of the original line-up plan to begin recording a new album, but plans are interrupted by Entwistle's death in 2002. Townsend and Daltrey released their album Endless Wire in 2006.
