Melissa was born and raised in New England and graduated with honors from Pomona College in Claremont. One of the first in her film career was the Humanitas Prize-winning documentary starring Oprah Winfrey, which Peltier directed in 1992. In 1994, she created the documentary Break the Silence: Kids Against Child Abuse, which earned her a Peabody Award.
In 1996, she and her colleagues co-founded MPH Entertainment, a film production company. Melissa continues to specialize in documentary film, having released several dozen films. One of her recent works is the film “I Am a Ukrainian: Personal Stories of a Revolution”, dedicated to the Ukrainian crisis that erupted in 2014.
