His life is like a poem. A story of dedication, courage and heroism. And also love for children, orphans, street children, the education of which he devoted almost all his life. Semyon Kalabalin was one of those about whom he wrote his "Pedagogical Poem" Anton Makarenko. About Calabalin can be composed no less exciting and instructive novel. This is evidenced by the documentary “Teacher with the Iron Cross”.
He was an outlaw, a bandit who almost got shot. Then he became a colonist, one of those who had the honor to become students of Anton Makarenko. Thanks to the influence of the great teacher, Kalabalin himself began to re-educate difficult teenagers. This difficult road, which he chose, almost ended, just beginning: a young bandit stabbed three-year-old son Semyon with a knife. He turned gray in one night, but did not give up pedagogy.
And then it was year 38, the arrest, the interrogations and the terrible Article 58. Only a miracle saved Kalabalin from execution and camps. He was released, but then came a new test – the war. Semyon passed the school of saboteurs and was abandoned in the German rear, in Ukraine. Here paratroopers Nazis handed over the police. In a prisoner-of-war camp, Kalabalin was approached by a German officer who spoke Russian perfectly. He offered Semyon to work for valiant Germany, and he agreed, telling how and why he hated the Soviet government. Semyon was given a new passport in the name of Semyon Karev, a radio and a special mission to send ciphers. After he was thrown into Soviet territory near Nizhny Novgorod, Kalabalin immediately came to the local NKVD. So he became a "double agent" and for a long time disoriented the German staff. His achievements were so highly valued by the Third Reich that Kalabalin was even awarded the highest honor of the German Empire, the Iron Cross.
The film "Teacher with the "Iron" Cross" is attended by people who knew and loved Semen Kalabalin: his son Anton, a member of the Academy of Pedagogical Sciences of the Russian Federation; actor, director and journalist Yuri Panich, who played the role of Kalabalin in the film "Pedagogical poem"; Anton Makarenko's niece close
