QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

We tried to make our FilmAdviser as simple as possible - so that no questions arise at all. Except for one thing - “How does this even work?”

And we hoped that you would not get to this page at all - as unnecessary. But since you are already here, here is our FAQ

  1. FilmAdviser suggests me some film. So what should I do about it now?

    • If you've seen him – Click on the “Just watched” button and rate the film. It is on the basis of ratings that the FilmAdviser determines your taste.

    • If you are interested in principle, but not now – postpone it to your wish list by clicking on the [Postpone] button (bookmark icon). In this case, you can indicate how much the film interested you. Or you can not specify it, but simply click on the button (on a mobile phone - again).

    • If you haven’t seen it and you’re not interested in the film, use the [Next] button (arrow). In this case, you can choose the reason for refusal.

    • And if you are so interested in it that you want to watch it right now, then, as you might guess, click on the [Watch] button

  2. Why I must rate films? I'm kind of lazy…

Your rates is the main information with which the system determines your taste. It finds users whose tastes are similar to yours and suggests movies they liked. Or movies similar to those you liked. But if you don't give rates, how can the system know what you like and what you don't?

So, if possible, rate the films you have watched. Fortunately, this is done in one click. As a last resort, if it is very difficult for you to evaluate, rate it as "Kn" (Known).

You can even specifically search (search in the upper right corner) for several films that you particularly like (or don’t like) and rate them. This will greatly speed up the process of learning your taste.

  3. When i move cursot on the [Next movie] button, some kind of spaceship control panel flies out. And I just want to skip this movie…

You can ignore this menu and simply click the [Next movie] button (on a mobile phone, click again). The movie will be skipped and will not be recommended to you for another month.

But just in case, take a look at the capabilities of this panel - it will come in handy in the future.

And if you are sure that you will never want to watch this film, use the cart button.

  4. I’ve been sitting and flipping through these films of yours for 5 (6.7…) minutes. They offer me either what I saw or some kind of nonsense…

The system is still learning your taste. By the way – did you rate the films you saw? This definitely needs to be done. Significantly speeds up the process. Without this, he may not get along at all.

Practice shows that in a maximum of 5-10 minutes the system will definitely offer you something that will really interest you. Especially if you help her at least a little with this, giving her ratest and explaining, if possible, the reasons for the refusal using [Next movie] panel. And next time it will be much faster

If you think this is a lot, remember how much time it usually takes you to find something suitable. So be patient a little, and we are sure – you will be satisfied.

It is possible to greatly speed up the selection of a high-quality profile - the “Improve Profile” function in your account or the “Rate movies” in the "Films & series" menu.

In these modes, you will be offered specially selected films, the rates of which will allow the system to quickly calculate your taste.

  5. I don’t want a comedy right now (cartoons, documentaries, etc.), but these are the films they persistently offer me.

After some time, the system itself will understand what you like and what you don’t. But this can be greatly speeded up if you tell her this explicitly.

Suppose you were offered a comedy, but you don’t want it. Move the cursor to the [Next] (arrow) button (on a mobile phone - just click on it), You see there the section “I don’t want this genre.” Click there on Comedy.

And comedies will no longer be offered to you until you explicitly remove this filter. The same applies to countries. Let's say, to exclude Asian films, exclude the region '*Asia'.

The same thing can be done more simply – click on “Comedies” in the movie card, and in the panel that opens, click on [Exclude]. In this way, by the way, you can exclude not only genres and countries, but also specific persons (directors, actors) or tags.

You will see everything excluded in the right “Filters” panel. - crossed out (on mobile - the filter icon is in the header). There you can remove exceptions by clicking on the red cross.

I used IMDb before, and I had a lot of ratings there. Is it possible to somehow transfer them to the FilmAdviser?

Yes, you can. Send as your exported rates .csv file to team@kinonavigator.ru and we will import it. Unfortunately, it's not automatic process...

  6. I want to watch something new, but they offer me some old stuff...

You can also manage the age of suggested films using the [Next] panel. In the “Find another movie” section Note the More and Less choices. Click on the choice of More New (or Less Old). You will now only be offered films newer than the current one.

In the same way, you can ensure that you are shown simpler, or more dynamic or lesser-known films...

The range of years in which films are selected for you is visible in the filter panel (on mobile - the filter icon in the header). You can also explicitly set this range there.

  7. I want to watch an action movie. How to explain this to the system?

Again, this can be done using the [Next] panel. In the “Find another movie” section presens a choice of genre. Select Action, and then you will be offered only action movies until you explicitly remove this filter in the filter panel (on mobile - the filter icon is in the header).

And if you have such a desire when you are on an action movie card – then you can click on “Action” and click [Add to filter]. This way you can filter not only by genre, but also by country, tags and person.

You can also select and exclude genres in the filter panel.

  8. I want to choose not a movie, but a series. Do you have any TV series there?

Yes, there is. This is configured in the Filter. You can select the content type there - Movies or TV Series

  9. I noticed some “Forecast” value in the film card. (icon - Starman). What is this?

This is a Forecast - the system's assumption about what rate you will give the film when you watch it. The more rates you have accumulated – the more accurate the forecast will be.

If you click on a forecast, the system will try to explain it.

  10. The system offers movies one at a time. Can I see the entire list of recommendations?

You can. Use the menu “Recommendations / All recommendations” on the top line. The system will show a list of movies that match the current filters that you are most likely to like. You can rate, add to wish list or refuse films directly from the list.

But it’s better to choose them step by step using [Next movie] button, because your skips and refusals are also important information that helps to understand your taste and mood and allow to improve recommendations.

  11. The film card says something like “Dynamic, very sentimental” etc. And even in those films in which there is no description. Where do you get this from? Who prescribes this and how much can you trust it?

This is one of the unique FilmAdviser features.

Nobody puts these characteristics by hands – they are calculated automatically based on the movie's rates by complicated matematical calculations, based on huge rates statistic and user polls. But the fact is that these characteristics are quite accurate – you can make sure by going to the card of any fairly popular movie you know well. And the more ratings a film has – the more accurate they are.

And we can not only show these properties, but also filter by them. If you want something tougher, and they offer you some kind of snotty melodrama – go to the [Next] panel and click [less] Sentimental there. Or [less] Kind

The same can be done by simply clicking on the property in the movie card.

  12. I want to find a specific movie. How can I do it?

Use the search – in the top line on the right. On mobile, you need to click on the magnifying glass in the top line. If you know approximately the year of the film – you can write it right there in the search bar – after the search pattern.

  13. I want to find films by a specific director (with a specific actor), how can I find them?

Type the name of this person in the search field (you can abbreviate it, for example "que tarant”). If the person you are looking for is not immediately offered to you, click on Enter.

The system will display a list of found persons and films with the participation of these persons. When you click on a person, the person’s card will open, from which you can open their full filmography, or set a filter by this person.

  14. I requested next recommended movie, and the system gave me a red message - that there are no more recommendations. Do you have so few films in your database?

No, we have a lot of films. You just set the filters too strict. Remove any filters in the “filters” panel (on mobile it opens by clicking on the filter icon). As a rule, it is enough to weaken the "forecast" filter. True, then it’s not a fact that you will like what the system offers :)

  15. How can I watch a movie that was recommended to me?

You need to click the Watch button. For most popular films, there are direct links added by users to sites where this you can watch the film.

If they are not there, or they all turned out to be non-working, use the search in one of the search engines we offer. To do this, just click on the name of the search engine. If you manage to find where to watch the movie, save the link to watch it in the appropriate window in the “Watch” panel. This will help other users...

  16. I want to watch something with my wife (husband, friends, etc.). Can your FilmAdviser help with this?

Maybe. We have a special mode for selecting films for group viewing. It is turned on in the "Recommendations" menu or the filter panel ("Choose to watch together") or on the page of the user with whom you want to watch.

To do this, your partner must have a profile on FilmAdviser. And it is advisable to first add him to Friends.

  17. The system prompts me to register. Why do I need it?

Now your are "anonimous" and system recognizes you by the cookie on your device. It's worth clearing your browser history — and the system will no longer recognize you – unless you rememer your 8-digit anonymous number (you can sign in by it without a password).

To insure against losing your profile and to be able to log in from another device, it makes sense to register. Only the nick is required. You don’t have to set a password or enter an email. Although it is highly advisable to indicate your email – to be able to recover your password, for example.

By email, by the way, you can also sign in (instead of your nick).

In addition, a number of system features are available only to registered users - only they can select for joint viewing, they have a wider range of filters, they can add posters and trailers where they do not exist.

  18. I want to not only rate films, but also organize them into folders. Let's say, create a "Favorites" folder and put your favorite movies there. Can I do this?

Yes, you can. In the window that pops up when clicking the “Snooze” button, there is a link “To folder”. If you click it, you can create a “Favorites” folder (or any other) and add movies to it. There can be many folders. You can view the list of your folders, create and delete folders through the personal menu “My Folders”.

Folders can be private or public. Public folders will be visible on your personal page, and you can share them with friends.

  19. I forgot my password. What should I do?

If you entered email – use the “Remind password” function in the login form. If you haven’t entered it, write to us at kinonavigator.team@gmail.com. We will try to help you.

  20. Can I see a list of my rates?

Yes, of course. Move mouse cursor on your name in the top line, and click on "My rates" in the menu that appears.

On mobile this menu appears when you click on "My" icon in control panel.

  21. Can I save my rates and reviews to a file?

Yes, of course. On the page with your rates, there is a icon in the header, when you click on it, your ratings and reviews will be downloaded as a .csv file (can be opened in Excel).

  22. Can I change/set/reset my password or email?

Yes, you can. Click on your name in the top line, and select "Settings" in the menu that opens. There you can configure all this

  23. I found an error in the description of the film. What should I do?

In the film card (in the additional information block) there is a link “Found a mistake?”. Click on it, and in the input field that opens, write what is wrong there. We will try to fix it

If you would like to help us improve the content, you can request rights to manage content. Once you receive the rights, you will be able to correct information and add new films.

  24. I didn’t find a movie that interests me. But information about it is available on other resources.

In the "Movies and Series" menu there is a "Request to add a movie" item. Click on it and enter the link to this movie in the field that opens. We will try to add it.

  25. I didn't find the answer to my question here.
