One day, Dutch film maker van der Horst was given her inheritance: 6 square meters, one sixth of a small, wooden house in the Russian countryside where her mother grew up. It was as if life had handed her a card she felt forced to play. She began a journey into the past, back into the childhood of her Russian mother and her five sisters, all of whom struggled with fear, famine and war in Stalin’s Russia; experiences that left them scarred to their very soul. Aliona’s quest into the lives and fate of her family becomes a loving, poignant, and poetic film with Chekhovian characters. Accompanied by the magical animation of acclaimed Italian artist Simone Massi, unimaginable events in the Soviet past are given an immediate charge. Along with the stories of ordinary people living in the small farmhouse, the film maker tells the tale of Soviet terror, immense bravery and a fear that has never left those four walls. close

“The lust for life” is a famous hit by Iggy Pop, recorded by him in 1977 on the album of the same name. The Iguana Man, whose torso is as popular as Mick Jagger’s, recently celebrated his 60th birthday and reassembled The Stooges, the legendary garage hard rock band. In the film, shot by the Dutch twenty years before, fans of Iggy Pop will see a not very familiar person. He is, of course, a bully and a brawler, but consistent and conceptual. He has an expressive figurative speech, and manners are impeccable. What the mask is and what the face is, it doesn't matter. At any moment, his body can turn into a prominence. With such energy, it is a sin not to create a musical direction. Teenagers are still delighted, even if some have a pension just around the corner. close

For her extraordinary film essay, Living the Light, Director and Director of Photography Claire Pijman had access to the thousands of Hi8 video diaries, pictures and Polaroids that Müller photographed while he was at work on one of the more than 70 features he shot throughout his career; often with long term collaborators such as Wim Wenders, Jim Jarmusch and Lars von Trier. The film intertwines these images with excerpts of his oeuvre, thus creating a fluid and cinematic continuum.
