'Hannah' tells the story of Buddhist pioneer Hannah Nydahl and her life bringing Tibetan Buddhism to the West. From her idealistic roots in 1960's Copenhagen to the hippie trail in Nepal, Hannah and her husband Ole became two of the first Western students of His Holiness the 16th Karmapa - the first consciously reincarnated lama of Tibet in 1110. Hannah went on to become an assistant and translator for some of the most powerful Tibetan lamas and a bridge between Buddhism in the East and the West. close

Ostensibly a non-narrative study of various aspects of a rural winter, this short film by one of modern Hungarian cinema’s greatest visual poets has all the spellbinding qualities of his better-known feature debut Sindbad (Szindbád, 1971), but here allied to a winning sense of humour that’s never quite allowed to detract from the haunting beauty of many of the images. The end of autumn is heralded by a few red leaves still clinging to a statue’s sculpted robes, while whip pans across the increasingly wintry landscape and close-ups of rippling water are given character by seemingly random freeze-frames and Zoltán Jeney’s electronic chirrups on the soundtrack. There are recurring shots of birds, migrating en masse, huddled by the icy water or lying individually dead, frozen stiff in the snow. Bender (here, his name is Oscar, not Ostap) begins with the fact that in a small town he falls in front of the chairman and seems to him ... no, not the son of Lieutenant Schmidt - in the late sixties and early seventies, when the film is about to take place, it is unlikely that the son of the hero of the revolution could be kept so young, and to bring him to Hungary, the writers would have to smoke something strong. Bender appears to be the nephew of Comrade Kalachek. I honestly don't know who it is, but it's hypnotic on the chairman! Bender and the chairman talk, and then comes the second nephew of comrade Kalachek. Bender's milk brother is called Bela Barrango. After their departure, the third stupid son of Lieutenant Schmidt, comrade Kalachek's nephew, tries to penetrate the chairman, and he is waiting for retribution.
