The film tells the story of Sakamoto Ryoma, a real historical character. He hated the shogunate, but wanted to defeat it without blood; a samurai and a great warrior, eager to adopt European achievements; a man interested only in ideas, not personal gain. A bourgeois revolution and civil war were brewing in Japan, threatening to flood the whole country with blood. Sakamoto Ryoma saw the possibility of solving the existing problems in uniting the forces of the opponents of the shogunate, primarily the southwestern principalities of Satsuma and Choshū. This was an almost impossible task, as there had long been enmity between these clans. In the possibility of such an alliance, no one believed, but Ryoma still managed to find a compromise, and in January 1866 to achieve the formation of a military alliance Satsuma-Chōshū. It was this alliance that played a decisive role in the overthrow of the shogunate. close

A surreal journey of a displaced spirit as he wanders in the interminable darkness through the temporal landscape of a quaint and isolated feudal-era fishing village. Guided by a series of faintly illuminated rooms, the wandering spirit comes upon ancient souls who take on physical forms as they recount their personal stories of daily existence, loss, and tragedy in the peasant community. Intrigued by his initial visit to a curiously distracted elderly woman, the spirit returns to her home in order to ask a fundamental question - "What is happiness?" - an existential query that is innocently answered with innate humility and accepted unknowingness. close

The young man ostensibly wanders into a time-warp in which aspects from his childhood and adulthood mix together. The smallpox virus has created its own unique atmosphere in Terayama’s film where the skin of a bandaged adolescent and the surface of the filmic image are subjected to a bizarre ‘disturbance’ as snails cross the screen and nails are hammered into the skull of the ailing patient. Illness in this film is as much a psychic entity as a physical one and manifests itself in an array of theatrical tableaux from grotesque women rigorously brushing their teeth to a snooker game where the players in white face makeup behave like automata. A Tale of Smallpox uses a medical theme to chart the traumatic dream life of Terayama’s times, evincing deep-rooted concerns in the Japanese national psyche that hark back to the upheaval of Meiji modernisation and the devastation of World War Two. close

"With this work, I developed/fleshed out the idea I had when making GHOST of peeling only the skin from various objects in the room, floating the skins in midair and then sticking them on different objects. This film was also shot entirely frame-by-frame with long-exposures. Along with GRIM, its meaning is 'as if to do forever.'" - Takashi Ito close
